View Full Version : Hysteroscopy?

I need to have one because of cysts. I'm having it done in the doctors office and all they told me was to take Motrin before and that it take about 15 minutes.
So a friend stopped by over the weekend and we were talking about it. She just had a hysterectomy. Anyway, she told me the hysteroscopy is very painful and that she was wiped out for several days. Will I be able to go to work the next day?
Anyone have one? Was it painful? What should I expect following the procedure?

I had two of them several years ago. I wasn't given an option of having them done at the doctor's office. I think they only did them at the hospital as an outpatient procedure. I was knocked out for mine, but felt perfectly fine after it was over. I remember feeling completely back to normal by dinner time. During one of mine, it was more of a surgical procedure to remove fibroids, and I still didn't feel any pain whatsoever after it, and took no pain meds. I'm not sure what would cause such pain for several days. Could she be thinking of a different procedure?

I've also had 2, both in my doctor's office. It was somewhat painful during the procedure, not terrible, but I was back to normal the next day.

Thanks Andrea. I love this friend dearly, but I think she has a low tolerance for pain/discomfort.
I think I'll call the doctor's office tomorrow and see how most of the patients feel afterwards. I may want to move my appointment from a Tuesday to a Friday, just in case.

ditto on having two too! Yes, it wasn't exactly comfy during the procedure but certainly wasn't awful. Good luck!
I had one of these a couple of years ago and didn't think it was bad. I had heard they were painful so I think the anticipation was worse than the actual procedure! It was done in a hospital x-ray room by a nurse and technician, and they sprayed a numbing agent on me before "going in." Also, my GYN recommended taking 4 extra strength motrin and drinking a can of coke or any full sugar soda (not diet) 30-45 minutes beforehand. The motrin helps with any minor discomfort and I can't remember what the can of coke does - something about blood sugar probably. I took both the motrin and coke and I do believe they helped! Good luck!

I had a D&C and hysteroscopy a little over a year ago to remove some polyps. It was done in the hospital and I was under general. When I woke up I had bad cramping but I was fine the next day....went back to work. Good luck, I am sure you will be fine.
