My husband and I have the stomach flu. He's just finishing up, and I'm just starting. Anyone have suggestions for good, easy to digest food to keep me going while I try to survive this yucky bug? I'm getting a little tired of saltines and dry toast.

During the flu bug - Clear liquids (chx broth) & saltines. Jello & popcicles (sp??).
Once your tummy settles down, you may try plain mashed potatoes, or mac & cheese, or cheese toast for a couple of days until you are used to solid food again. (Those are usually what I want.)
(I had it in January & it was awful, but I did lose 10 pounds!)

chicken soup (gives you protein)
yogurt (go easy on it)
graham crackers
cream of wheat (go easy on the milk with it)
applesauce
clear liquids (like apple juice)
When you start feeling a little better, you can try a little of watered white wine, by the way.

I think ginger and mint are supposed to be good for the tummy, so you might try sipping some tea made with ginger or mint. Feel better!

When I was going through chemo and constantly nauseous, i found that white foods were more appealing and also things that were a bit sweeter. So I had my share of vanilla yogurt, white rice, crackers, baked potatoes, toast with jam, and bananas.
You've got to just eat what you can tolerate and don't worry about the nutritional aspect of things until you start feeling alot better.
Sorry that you're suffering.

I just went through this a couple weeks ago! BLECH.
I got this list from webmd.com ...ate them all with no "effects" until I fully got my appetite back. It was a good solid week.
Bananas
Plain Yogurt
Broth
Water Crackers
White Rice (I had Basmati :D )
Plain Chicken (I cooked mine in broth and a little basil for flavor)
Apple Juice
Jello
Feel Better!

I HIGHLY recommend Miso soup. I always keep a box of dry Miso soup in the cupboard for nausia!

Just to clarify--my issue is not nausea but, ahem, in the other direction if you know what I mean, which means food actually doesn't turn the stomach, but some foods don't process well (I don't think anyone wants me to be more specific than that). ;) I actually seem to be okay for now, but I can feel it coming on and, in the beginning, my husband had the exact same symptoms I have (really weak, can't eat very much, feeling kind of down/sad). I'm hoping I make it through with nothing more serious, but today I've been eating really bland, safe foods just to be on the safe side (toast for breakfast, chicken soup and saltines for lunch). I just had a banana after the suggestions on this post. Thanks again, everyone!

You might try sipping on Gatorade, it helps replace those electrolytes you lose when you have that problem! Stay away from milk products until it resolves. Your lower GI track loses it's beneficial bacteria during bouts of d-rhea, making it difficult to digest milk products. Generally, you should avoid them for up to 48 hours after the motility problem subsides.
Poor thing. Hugs and kisses for you.....
The banana suggestion is a good one. After my first son was born the hospital's kitchen had run out of bananas and the pediatric floor was calling all over hoping someone had bananas off a tray or something. They had a boy with a severe case of what you were dealing with. I was fortunate enough to have received a fruit basket and was able to fill the order. Now I always remember that (but I was one who was thinking you were talking about nausea).
You might want to try some plain salted pretzels instead of saltines. When I get nauseated, dairy and sweet foods are the worst things for me, but everyone is different. Just take it easy and eat small, frequent meals.

Sorry you're so sick. Just keep in mind that there's no such thing as stomach flu. Cases of "stomach flu" are almost always food poisoning. You can catch it from someone else because you're usually sharing a common bathroom. Hope you feel better soon.

Here's another vote for the BRAT plan except we always said it was
Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
and
Tea rather than Toast...but who knows.
Another thing I do if I feel like I have nothing in my system at all is I get Pedialyte Singles (and I don't even have kids) and drink one or two. I hear it is much better for you than Gatorade (when you are ill that is) because it is easier to digest.
Hope you geel better, getting sick is the worst :(

Ginger also helps to settle the stomach. Don't take it in the form of ginger ale though...too much sugar. Feel better.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and well-wishes. I appear to have averted the worst of it--I didn't end up having the stomach problems my husband had (poor thing), just lack of appetite and no energy. He was really really sick. Also, I'm sure it actually was an illness because several people at work had it and my husband and it. I can't see how they could have all gotten food poisoning (especially since my husband never comes to my office). Thanks again everyone.
