View Full Version : Strange Poll: Bread or cheese?

I know it sounds strange, but I was thinking about it. SO many of us are carbo addicts and I know a lot of us are cheese-a-holics, so I was wondering, if you had to choose, which do you prefer.
Since I have been trying my level best to rid my diet of most starch (is white rice, white french bread, potatoes - my ultimate weakness etc), I would choose CHEESE! I have always loved cheese, but growing up in a small town, I wasnt exposed to much besides colby and swiss. This board has exposed me to so many different varieties I didnt know existed (I just bought some horshradish white cheddar) and I am having fun playing with the varieties.
What about you?

Definitely cheese! My husband and I love to find new cheeses. We have an amazing store in town that brings in a great variety. Every time we go, we discover fabulous new ones.
I love bread too, but I could not do without cheese. I just can't have as much cheese as I like as it goes straight to the hips!

Cheese - as long as it wasn't the kind that's left out too long and hardens into a rind. Yech!

<gasp>
I'd have to make a choice? I have no children, but for me, that would be like making a choice of one child over the other!!
I'm afraid I'd have to seriously think on it, but I guess my first whim of a choice would be cheese, since there are so many different kinds.....but mmmmm warm bread..............

What about cheese bread?!?!
Crusty Asiago-Pesto loaf?
Sandy -- this question threatens suffering and cruel and unusual torture!

Okay.
I have to admit it.
I don't like cheese. If I was starving and there was a big platter of cut cheeses set in front of me, I would have to find something else to eat, like my fingers or something. There is something about the texture that I do not like. I also really dislike cheese crackers and cheese bread.
Melted cheese, like on pizza or french onion soup, is a different story. That I love!
So, to answer your question and take it a little bit further, BREAD. And that would be the answer to the question; which food would you choose if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life! :p

CHEESE , definitely! ;)
I definitely like bread better than cheese. Unlike most people, I prefer bread that is almost raw and doughy, but prefer most any bread over cheese. I only eat small quantities of cheese on rare occasions. Some cheeses are delicious, but the though of putting more than a pinch of cheese on my mouth at once makes me want to vomit. I could never eat anything with a thick cheese layer.

Oh dear. I love both. But if I had to choose one to give up, I'd give up the cheese. When I have cravings, they definitely tend toward carbs, and I'm not sure there's anything better than fresh baked bread.
Now, if you were asking me to choose between cheese and sliced packaged bread at the supermarket, that would be a different story. I could easily give up processed, sliced bread!

CHEESE
Like Kim, I'm cutting out as much as possible white starches/sugars, so not consuming copious quantities of sourdough bread and baguettes was hard at first, but now I don't miss it. I've even just put my bread machine into the pile for a garage sale next month!
Now I really enjoy an outstanding piece of hearty bread or a succulent croissant when I find one- like saving my chocolate cravings for the quality stuff. And nan- I have to admit a weakness for nan.
But cheese- such a glorious, amazing, enlightening, profound food. It's like wine- the history, culture, tradition, moods, terroir that play a part in each variety fascinate me. France has what- over 700 different types of cheese- and that's just one country.
I have a little dream of raising my own goats and making my own
chevre. This would be in addition to our vineyard :)
A day without cheese is like a day without sunshine

Julie, I, like you, am giving away my bread machine, and like you, had trouble giving up sourdough at first. However, I find I have more energy w/o the white flour and there are so many beautiful, glorious cheeses just waiting to be tried......

Well, it is an impossible choice, but what I would choose would depend on how I was using it.
I seem to have lost most of my taste for just eating cheese - as in cheese and crackers or whatever. My hubby and I used to eat it all the time (especially with a crusty loaf of french bread), but somewhere along the line, I got turned off. I don't miss it much and I can certainly do without the extra fat. So, in that case, I would choose bread hands down, no question.
However, when it comes to cooking or preparing a meal, I would choose cheese, no contest. When I prepare a meal, cheese is very often part of the meal, whereas bread may or may not be present.
I just can't give a simple, one word answer ever, can I????? ;)

I, too, would have to say cheese. But I also have to ask, Kim, what kind of SICK person would make us choose? ;)

Ah, Julie, what poetry. You nailed it for me -- how could I possibly give up something that's filled with so much character and offers so much adventure?
So yes, I'd opt for cheese, but alas, would this mean I would have to give up my hallowed bagels and homemade pizza crust???? Maybe I could keep those? But, please -- they're whole wheat, Kim! ;)

When I was a kid, my family called me a 'mouse'. I was totally addicted to cheese, and would melt it on anything! In fact, I remember when we got our first microwave. That big 'ol Amana RadarRange that was as big as a TV set? Mom and I discovered that if you slice a standard Kraft Single into quarters, each section fits PERFECTLY on a Triscuit. 8 Triscuits for 30 seconds in the micro with 2 slices of American....YUM! That's still one of my favorite snacks, and I'm not even an American cheese fan anymore!
I haven't made homemade bread in over a year, and even though I serve some type of bread with each meal, I only partake 50% of the time. Last night it was Mexican Cornbread that I served with my Mexican Lasagna so that seemed different! But if I had to make a choice, it would be cheese all the way! I just don't eat as much anymore because I'm not big on lowfat cheeses and I have a real problem with portion control... :p

I would have to chose CHEESEas well. Though I've grown to appreciate breads and love the smell of bread baking in the bread machine; I really can not imagine life and cooking without cheese.
A friend of mine was just told she couldn't eat cheese, due to "female problems", for an untold amount of time. All I could say was "I feel for you!" She is having a rough time of it as one can imagine. A burrito just isn't the same without the cheese!

Oooh...warm bread, fresh out of the oven, with a bit of butter slathered on top....mmmm. Now I'm craving those carbs!
Don't get me wrong, I like cheese as well, but I if forced to choose, bread would win, hands down! Although, as others have mentioned, I would take cheese over the pre-sliced bread at the grocery. And it would be nearly impossible for me to eliminate cheese from my cooking....
Aaah, thank goodness we don't really have to choose! :D

Definately bread!! I could live on wonderful, crusty, warm sourdough bread. There are days when I do!! Or hearty rye, potato dill, a crusty cuban loaf- the possibilities are endless! A meal is not a meal without bread. I am so happy that more and more artisan bakeries are opening up around the country and people are expecting good bread when they go to restaurants.
Cheese is wonderful, but I could definately live without it when I have chewy, comforting bread!

Now how could anyone with the moniker "beccathebaker" say any differently! Becca, you have my mouth watering. I know I have professed my undying love for cheese, but a girl can still look and fantasize, can't she? Keeps the relationship interesting... :)

I gotta go with becca's answer, I'd choose bread!
But what a mean thing to do! It's just not nice to make someone choose between the two most enticing foods ever created. And since I don't eat any meat, bread and cheese are staples in my diet--might by the reason I'm so plump though.

Bread! No question about it... although my evening "snack" before dinner with my glass of wine while I'm cooking is quite often cheese on bread.... a lovely slice of our newly discovered "blue brie" on some crusty sourdough! MMMMM! Amazingly my 2 year old loves it.
As for the low carb diet, I would never make it. My diet is bread, cereal, pasta, cheese, fruit and vegies with a bit of meat thown in. Then of course there is the dessert course... is chocolate a carb???? If so... I'm carbo loading!

I too have to go with the "bread" nothing is better then hot out of the oven bread! ryes, pumpernickel, sourdough, marble, sundried tomatoe, herb, cinnamon raisin and on and on!
I do have to admit a good cheese and a glass of wine (w/bread of course) and I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up.

There is absolutely no hesitation for me in answering this: BREAD ! I'm still learning to love cheese, but a life with no bread would be dismal indeed.
