Hi all. I am wondering if anyone has purchased the Kidco Food Mill. This is a food mill specifically designed/targeted to making baby food at home. It is also sold as part of the "Natural Steps Feeding System" which includes ice cube trays, an electric grinder (mini food processor really), and the food mill.

I was all ready to buy it, then saw some really negative reviews on Amazon, including that it was all plastic, didn't work well, etc.

I am making baby food for my little one and rather than buying that whole set, figured basic ice cube trays and my food processor would be key, but some things I've read said the food grinder/mill option is better for things like potatoes or meats that might get gummy in the food processor. The other advantage is that it is portable, thus can travel to grandmas or restaurants, but if it doesn't work, I don't need another gadget!

Anyone have thoughts or input on this? Should I just use a regular food mill and opt for the fork as my portable tool of choice? ;)

I made all of DD's baby food with an immersion blender. No problems here. Although, I never made meat. The thought of pureed meat kind of grossed me out. We just waited a bit, and then fed her pieces of deli meat ripped into tiny pieces.

We used ice cube trays. Once you get a stash of food going, it is very easy. I would make large amounts, and then freeze in an ice cube tray- pop them out and put them in a ziploc bag that was labeled.

I don't suggest bring a blender to a restaurant. You never know what a restaurant might put in their foods. (This is coming from a mom of a highly allergic child.) I would just pop a few cubes into a tupperware, and bring that. Applesauce is also a great food to bring with you. Always goes over well!

Bought it. Used it twice. Piece of junk, IMO. Difficult to use (lots of effort to grind tiny amounts of food) and not a lot of fun to clean either.

I used a mini food processor, my regular food mill, and occasionally a potato masher to prepare foods for DS. I skipped the ice cube trays- I just lined a baking sheet with parchment and plopped tablespoon-size servings down, then froze them and transferred to storage containers once frozen. Less to clean and it didn't matter if I had more puree than slots in the ice cube tray.

We didn't go to a lot of restaurants when he was very young, but like Meredith, when we did we brought our own food for him.

I just used my KA food processor. Cooking one squash made a TON and it was just as easy to use the big one or the small bowl that came with my food processor. My MIL gave me a small food chopper to use just for her food but it dodn't work very well. I used it 3 or 4 times before the motor burned out.
