Just to show that the east coast, too, is capable of starting the thread, I'll give it a launch. Not that I've run today ; we're having yet another snowstorm. But I did get out to walk with a friend and our two dogs for about an hour and a half this morning. Dogs had a ball in the snow and we had good conversation. And, I'm basically on track with the weekly mileage targets, which is all to the good.

TKay, good luck with your 10K tomorrow!! Though I did see on my lurk on the Beck thread that you're not feeling so great today; please take care of yourself, with whatever that may mean for the 10K.

Happy new week, runnahs!

Oops! Seathyme, looks like we were posting at the same time. Darn you east coasters! :p I'll copy my post over to this thread. Thanks for starting us out.

Aggie - Scary about your street run. Glad you're safe and got your run in anyway. Sedona and your birthday sound fun. Looking forward to your next car report.
Les - Sorry you have to practice that whole patience thing for a while longer. But glad you're feeling a bit better. Good going on the spin. Oh, and thanks for the advice about rest.
Seathyme - Like Florida, we have lots of rain here in SoCal. I'm sure it's still better than snow and biting wind, but it's not the tropical paradise one would imagine. Sorry about the creaky legs, but good going on the yoga nonetheless.
Natasha - Funny about the YKYARW...and again, not TMI at all.
Newsomz - That's cool about the Nike+ challenge. What ended up happening?

Well, wouldn't you know it? Last night I started getting a really sore throat. Today, I'm achy all over. Ugh! Fortunately, my meeting for this morning got canceled so I'm able to lay low at home. I'm also taking a rest day since tomorrow is the 10K. It's rain, rain, rain all weekend, so we'll see what happens. I hate to drag the kids out there for a soggy run.

Thanks for your advice on resting today. You confirmed what I'd been thinking. Dh got me confused when he told me that he always does at least an easy spin the day before a (bike) race. I started to question my plan. Gee, uh, am I SUPPOSED to run today? (Even though I wouldn't normally run two days in a row either.)

Hello to all you runners I missed.

TKay, Sorry to hear you're not feeling well! My best advice is, if you're not feeling up to it, ditch the race. Don't feel like you have to do it because you already signed up, did all the training, etc. There will be plenty of other races. I made the mistake of "pushing through" and going through with my plans to run a half marathon last winter when I was sick, and I so regretted it. It was just not worth it.

But, if you're still feeling up to it in the morning and decide to go for it, best wishes for a great (and dry!) race!!

seathyme, did you go for an hour and a half walk in a snowstorm?? My boss is in Philly today (she landed late last night) and just called me to whine about the "blizzard" that's going on there. She is a native Arizonan, so I'm pretty sure she's had very little exposure to snow, if any at all. I'm also convinced she's exaggerating when she says the blizzard is so bad you cannot see anything (she described it as a "total whiteout") and it would have been "impossible" for her to walk across the street from her hotel to our firm's office there. So she's holed up in her hotel room just whining. :p

LOL about your boss, Eva! To be fair to her, the storm was worse to the south this morning, so she may only have been exaggerating a little.:p It was only snowing lightly when I took that walk; now there are several inches on the ground and more coming, so it wouldn't be so safe to drive there and not a lot of fun to walk either.

TKay - Good luck on the 10K tomorrow (if you're up for it). I hope the sore throat is only temporary.

seathyme - Good thing you got your walk in before the snow really came down! Keep warm this weekend.

I did win the 1st challenge my sister and I had going. Woohoo!. I just hope she doesn't get discouraged and stop challenging me b/c I am well on my way to winning the second one, too. I think she must have been busy with school over the past few days b/c it doesn't look like she's gotten many runs in :(

I have another 7K on tap for this weekend and am hoping to plan a bike ride if the rain lets up.

TKay - Sending good vibes to you for health in the morning and a good run. You'll be fine, just take it easy and have fun (if you feel well). As for DH's comment about riding the day before a race, there are some schools that say a gentle workout just to unkink your muscles is fine - for instance, when I raced at Boston a couple years ago I ran my last official run on Thursday and the race wasn't until Monday so my coach recommended (if I felt up to it) to run about 10-15 minutes on Sunday just to work the kinks out, but that wasn't the norm but an exception.

seathyme - I think I know what you had this morning - the same stuff that was falling here yesterday. Glad you got an hour and a half with the dog in a gentle snowstorm. Stay warm ok?

Howdy to newsomz and aggie.

Well, no positive news yet on my internship. I did get a turn down but I found out that the site wasn't going to have any interns for the coming year so I wasn't personally turned down - the site took itself out of the internship puzzle for the coming year. Still have 3 possibles out there -- hopefully something soon. I rested today - still a little lingering crud and there was freezing rain/ice all around. Nothing terrible but it would have been bad enough to cause serious breathing problems. Tomorrow I'll try a run if my lungs clear out a little or else I'll do a long spin.

Happy trails all and happy weekend,
Les

Back to backs - no run today or probably any day in the near future. The crud I've been fighting has turned into a full blown case of Influenza. After a trip to the ER this morning I got the disgnosis and the direction to rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take a med that should help the flu run it's course faster. Alas, that means no runs or anything except sleep and eat and study when possible for the next couple days.

Hope folks are having a better weekend than I am. Off for a blanket, more water, and a rest - the shivers are headed in.

Happy trails,
Les

Les - Bummer to hear that one of the sites you interviewed at decided not to take interns after all :( A coworker of mine had the flu recently and was down for a bit. Take all the rest you need to get fully over it! I know it is never fun to be sick but it sounds like your body needs some down time. I hope LW doesn't catch it and can make you some nice soup :) I'll be thinking of you over the next week and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hello everyone else, I hope your weekends are turning out wonderfully! I went for a 14 mi bike ride this morning. Normally I only ride my bike for transportation purposes or when a friend invites me on a ride so it felt a little different to jump on my bike by myself and take off. It was fun! I took a popular country rode and saw many bikers on my ride. Now I just need to wash my bike to get all the road crud off of it. I am committed to keeping it in better shape this year since I just had my chain & all cables/housings replaced :) Tomorrow is running day and I think I'm going to stick with a 7K run. I thought about going up to 8K but I've been increasing my mileage every week so far so I think it is time for a "rest" week.

Leslie Ferguson
02-23-2008, 12:09 PM
newsomz - Alas, depending on how you look at it (for her benefit or for her detriment) LW is out of town. Hopefully she doesn't come down with it herself since she's in Norfolk (about 3 1/2 hours away). Luckily, I'm feeling well enough to cook and eat and have plenty of food to last me for a couple days - even the comfort food necessities.

Good job on your run today and if you feel the need for rest then that's probably a good idea.

Happy trails,
Les

Since I only have 40 days left till I will run my first 8K Run (Shamrock Shuffle) I decided to run outside today. For the first time in month. I was dying! Is it just me or is running outside harder than on the treadmill? I only made it through 2.5K - at the gym I can run 8K without a problem in 50 minutes.

TKay, I hope that you were able to rid yourself of that *whatever* which was attempting to rear its ugly head and that you successfully ran the 10k this morning (in sun and gentle breezes, of course!)

Les, the flu! I wish we lived in your area-- I'd have DH make you a pot of soup and deliver it... ;) Take care and allow yourself plenty of time to heal.

Seathyme hope that the weather eases up and you can give le chien another walk today. I couldn't have gone outside and walked if I wanted to because there's a layer of ice over everything.

Carrie how on earth can you live in such a nice, temperate climate and not go on more bike rides? DH and I love to go to a local riding trail, but we pass when the temps are below 45 or so (yes, we're weenies but the wind is so cold when biking!).

Eva I lurked in your post at the other board but didn't have much more to add except (and this is appropriate for this board) Pittsburgh has a marathon in May, a Great Race (10k) in September, and a bunch of regional races/events. I don't know what the terrain is like in your part of AZ, but you'd would probably have to get used to running hills... :) You could always come and run my wooded trails but, alas, we are almost an hour drive away.

I upped my stretching, increased the weights (upper body only), started to get back into crunches. Dear heavens, I was sore and achy for a couple of days! But the swelling in my ankle is finally going away (I see a shape now) and I'm starting to put a little weight on the leg. Just a little.

This annoys me-- I know that my ankle won't snap when I start to put weight on it, but I'm scared. My toes are a little less numb (the nurse told me that where my metatarsal had broken and wasn't lined up correctly, a piece of each section was pressing onto nerves. ugh.) and I should be a lot braver than I am being! But sometime this week, I shall start on the exercise bike. Enough of being a lump!!! :o

Happy Weekend to all!

Hi guys!

Vicci, good to see you. Best of luck when you try the bike! I don't blame you for being scared to try stuff, in the circumstances!

Les, feel better SOON!

TKay, how was the 10k??

Dani, WELCOME! Nice to see you here. Yes, running outside is harder than on the treadmill. I read somewhere that it was 7% harder for various reasons but don't know about the exact figure. Definitely harder, though, because of hills, uneven roads, etc., and just having to work harder.

Eva, that's funny about your boss but I can understand it if she's not used to snow. I saw your other thread, and have never lived in Pittsburgh, but have visited many areas and really like that area. (FWIW! ;))

Seathyme, glad you enjoyed the snow!

Carrie, good idea to do the bike ride and be conservative about increasing the mileage.

Hi to Kathy, Betsy, ktg, Legolas, Mary, and the rest of the gang.

Crazy few days here so training has not been what I'd hoped it would be, but such is life :) I'll try to squeak in a spin before a friend comes over with fixins' for girly drinks :D (She and I will have girly drinks, but DH will have a beer, I'm thinking. ;))

Take care, guys,
Natasha

Les, what a bummer about the flu!:( Take it easy, okay? (Not that you've probably got much choice for a bit here.)

Vicci, LOL about your DH whipping up some soup for Les. While he's at it, perhaps a batch for TKay as well?;) I can imagine feeling just as scared as you do about putting weight on that foot/ankle. But the EB should be a relatively benign start to your return to exercise. Perhaps you will be able to say you LOVE that thing for the first time ever.:p

TKay, how are you today? Was it in the cards to run, or did you eat chicken soup instead?

Nat, enjoy your girlie drinks.:D My DH would definitely join yours with a beer in that situation.

Hi Dani! I hope that once you get used to running outside you'll come to love it. I find it fun to look at the surroundings and have the varied terrain, even if it is sometimes challenging.

Carrie, the bike ride sounds great. Several other VRB's are regular bikers, so you'd be in good company if you reported on future rides.

For me it was snow shoveling in the a.m. today, then a two-mile power walk with le chien just before dark. Looks like things are cleared enough to permit a run tomorrow, though I'll only have time for a short one. Better than nothin' anyway!

Hi to everyone else -- check in when you can!

Leslie Ferguson

Welcome Dani! It's good to see you and I hope that you enjoy your Shamrock 8K in 40 (now 39 days probably). The simple answer for why the treadmill is easier than the road is the assistance provided by the belt. When I did miles on the treadmill my coach had me put the incline at 0.5-1.0% (whatever the lowest setting is) to take the assistance out of the belt without making the run too hard. I bet that once you get on the road more frequently you'll be fine.
Vicci - Thank you and DH for the virtual soup. That is kind of funny considering where he was a ocuple months ago. I hope that your foot doesn't start to get numb once you start working out. I think doctors and nurses, especially non-sports medicine doctors (most orthopedics aren't sports med folks either). Keep pluggin and take it a little easy - you really won'tbe able to hop back to 45 minutes of running after being off it for 6-8 weeks.
seathyme - Like you said a little while ago - my body is taking over and making me rest. It sounds like you had a good day today and you have a plan for tomorrow.

Nat - How were the girlie drinks/beers? Did you get your spin in today?

Time to go back to sleep and cuddle up - maybe feed a little more so I don't get wigged out in the middle of the night.

See you later (limping along),
Les

Natasha

Quick check-in. Forgot to mention that I do the incline thing on the treadmill too that Les mentioned, to help compensate for it being easier. I keep it at 1.0%. The odd time I forget to set it that way when it starts, I realize pretty quickly as it feels weird to me without the incline now.

Eva, congrats on the new wheels!

Later, all,
Nat :)

Hi VRBs. A super-quick drive by for me this morning. Just wanted to let you know that the crud officially settled in and I did not do the 10K. :( Ah, well. The irony? In the midst of all the rain we've had lately, Saturday morning was clear and sunny.
The boys are also sick, so I have little time online. I'll try to check in later and say personal hellos. For now, happy Sunday all.

Natasha
02-24-2008, 02:07 PM
TKay, I'm sorry to hear about the 10k, but it sounds like a very wise decision. Hope you and the boys feel better soon.

Ditto for Les and anyone else ailing!

Got in a run today - about 47 minutes. I didn't want to go longer because it was the first time running since last Sunday.

Okay, off to do stuff and take out the BA cinnamon rolls from the oven. :) Glorious sunny day here, so we took advantage with a lot of walk time. It was also sunny yesterday, so we had a good hike. I can't remember the last time we had two purely sunny days in a row ;) Lucky I'm not prone to SAD or this winter would have been a trying one!

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that I also got in the spin yesterday and that the girly drinks were very much enjoyed!

Take care, all.

Hi, sounds like everyone made it through the weekend!

seathyme - A power walk is always good exercise. Were you able to get out for a run today?

Dani - Hi! I don't run much on treadmills so I can't answer on that one. But I agree with seathyme and think you'll really enjoy watching the outside pass by as you run once you get used to it :)

Natasha - Glad to hear you were able to get a run in! And the spin/girly drinks sounds nice, too. What kind of trainer do you have? I might need one for the summer ;)

Tkay - Sorry to hear you got bogged down with "the crud" (and the boys - even worse)! Guess you'll have to start planning for the next 10K. Luckily CA has such nice weather they probably hold races year round...

Les - Hope you're get to feeling better soon. Guess it is good LW isn't there to get sick!

Vicci - Yay! I am glad to hear the ankle is getting better. How was the bike? I *wish* we had temperate weather :) Unfortunately, in a few months it will be too hot to even stand outside! Oh well. Luckily I am pretty acclimated to the heat so it doesn't bother me too much.. I just get sweaty. The bad part is that during the winter it never gets cold enough for me to acclimate to cold weather so I am constantly cold and am a huge wimp about the cold. 45? Try if it is under 55 I'm wimpy about being on the bike :) So, I suppose it is better that I live in hot weather rather than cold!

I got in a 7K run today. I felt quite sluggish but made it through the whole run so I was happy. It was a very funny run, though. It turns out there was a marathon this morning and part of my route went down the marathon route. I didn't see any runners but the volunteers at the rest station cheered me on and offered me gatorade :) It felt strange to have people cheering me on during my normal Sunday run, lol.

Leslie Ferguson
02-24-2008, 06:47 PM
TKay - Sorry you and the boys have the crud too - hopefully nothing like what I'm sporting right now. Get well soon and I agree with Carrie - you probably have plenty of opportunities for a 10k in SoCal.
Carrie - That's a good story running along a marathon route by mistake. It does feel nice to have people cheering you on doesn't it? It sounds like you may need a day or two off if your run was that flat today.
Nat - Good run to you and I'm glad you had a good day yesterday. Thanks for your wishes too.

I definitely need to take it easy and today was brought that home in spades. I felt good this morning and decided to venture out to get something at the drug store that I was running low on (one of those things that doesn't get much usage until you get sick DUH! ) By the time I got home I felt whipped and a bit spent. Except for my cough it looks like the worst symptoms - especially the fever are gone because my temp appears to be back to my cold-blooded critter normal of 97.5.

Checking out - reading to do as I may try to go sit in class tomorrow and I'm a little tired. Better days tomorrow because LW will be home (and I can keep her up with my coughing too ;) ).

Happy trails while laying low,
Les

Hi, all. Absolutely nothing to report running wise, but thought I'd pop in anyway. I am really glad I got several runs in early in the week. Work is so busy our unit is using almost 5 extra nurses every shift, so they really needed extra help. After I did my scheduled shift on Thursday, I agreed to work Friday and Saturday as well. Today I took a long nap after lunch....not as young as I used to be! :o

Hope you hear some news on your internship, soon, Les. Waiting is the pits, isn't it? You have no control..... Anyway, glad to hear you are feeling better, and I hope your family is on the mend soon, too, Tkay. Sorry you had to miss your race, but I'm sure it would have been lousy to run if you were feeling sick. DD was feeling bad last week, but we got two snow days just in time. A few days of rest at home and she was feeling much better...never got beyond congestion and fatigue thank goodness.

Carrie, how fun to have the crowd support on an everyday run. I would have been smiling the rest of the day after that! :)

Yea for sunny days, Natasha! A hike sounds like a great way to enjoy it. Cinnamon rolls sound cozy, too!

Vicci, I think I would be a little apprehensive, too. Hopefully once you start using it, your foot will be back to normal soon. The bike sounds like a good way to start back up with your exercising. Don't overdo it the first time on it, though!!! :)

Seathyme, good job keeping up with your mileage in one fashion or another. Good that you got so many miles in during January...so you have a bit of a cushion if February weather is less cooperative. Way to stick with your plan!
My only NY resolution was not exercise related but rather to menu plan every week so I'd be better organized. So far, so good, and I am really seeing benefits...even some unexpected ones!

Susan, hope you had a good trip and decent travel. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Dani, I am a TM runner during the winter, and it IS ALWAYS a little intimidating for me when I move back outside. You have to just DO IT, and soon it will be no big deal. My one suggestion would be that if it feels hard to run outside, SLOW DOWN. It is really hard to gauge your pace when you don't have a digital readout in front of you. Just head out the door for a slow run, and force yourself to take it easy. Then you can gradually pick up the pace as you get acclimated. That's my two cents worth anyway.

Wishing you all a good week!

VictoriaL

I'mmm walkin', yes indeed I'm... limpin'...

I have cleared the first hurdle, putting weight on my foot. I was actually worried about how I was going to do it since I've been mimicking the walking motion, while on crutches, all last week while increasing the weight I was putting on my leg. I simply couldn't make myself walk on it. Today I decided to do some things in the kitchen. I was standing at the sink, beating eggs and brown sugar together for four minutes (sound familiar Carrie? Brownie drops!) and just started to put more weight on the leg. Then more. And all of a sudden it was done. Without crutches, I walked (very gingerly) over to grab the baking sheets off of the table. Yay! :D

I am by no means in shape to run, or even to walk normally, but it feels so good to not be totally dependent on those crutches. I plan to go slowly, but this just feels so good!!!

Tkay I was so certain that you would shake the crud and shine in that 10k! Wah! I hope that you and the boys are feeling better.

Same for Les. Get well wishes being sent your way, too.

Nat Ahhhh, cinnamon rolls! Um, what is "BA" The size of the rolls (Big A** Cinnamon Rolls???) or the magazine from which you gleaned the recipe? Ad that's great about 2 sunny days in a row and on a weekend, to boot. Hasn't happened here this winter, yet.

Carrie how funny about the marathon on your regular route! :) Did you partake of the Gatorade?!

Les last fall I went thru the medicine cabinet and disposed of the expired stuff. DH walked in and asked what we would take if we needed something that I was getting rid of. Hmmm. So I repurchased the basics just in case. So far, knock on wood...

Kathy you've been a busy bee of late. Don't let it wear you down, though. Two illnesses on this Board are two too many. Hope this week is easier!

It is going to be very difficult not to try and do a lot, but I shall force myself to hold back. I think I'll hold off on the exercise bike until midweek, though. Let foot and ankle get used to being walked upon.

Take care all! :)

I'm back and alive! Just tried to stay offline over the weekend (wasn't completely successful). My work trip to NY was a success, despite having to go early then staying a whole extra day due to the Fri snow (which seems to follow me where ever I go!) After spending a week working with the Sleep Deprivation Team, I got in a quick TM run at the hotel on Fri. Followed it up w/a great Bode run at the dog park on Sunday.

Vicci - I will start using your new definition of BA. It's quite appropriate for all of their desserts! Congrats on your progress w/the foot

T-Cutie - Good to hear from you! You are definitely starting at the right time in terms of acclimating to running outdoors before your race. You'll be fine. I also hope to do a Shamrock Shuffle here. It's a 10K

TKay - Sorry about your crud, but you definitely made the right decision. Was DH watching the Tour de Cal all week? We watched the prologue, which was fun as we used to live on the race course. I have the others on tape to spin to this week, so no spoilers!! Did I ever tell you that we met Johann Bruneel (sp?) & Christian Vandevelde at LAX following the TdC 2 years ago? DH got autographs

Newsomz - Definitely keep posting on your bike rides! It's so nice to get out there for fun instead of just transportation. And fantastic x-training. Riding will make you stronger and faster on your runs

Nat - We've had lots of sun here, but are definitely tired of shoveling. Also itching to get outside on the bike. We've got another 4-6" tonight (which means it's coming your way!)

Seathyme - belated congrats on the house

Les - hope your household is feeling better. Keeping our fingers crossed for your internship (the long wait would drive me batty)

Howdy to the rest o' the gang. I'm hoping to spin later today.

Fly-by to say hello, and welcome back, Susan!

Vicci, I love your definition of BA!:D And how awesome that you're walking!! Yay.

Les and TKay, hope you feel better SOON.

Carrie, love the story about getting an aid station on your regular run.:D

Sorry I don't have time for more personal comments, but hello to everyone!

I can report 2 small but real miles yesterday, and 5 more this morning. Have so far successfully avoided ice-patch-itis. We're having a big melt today and forecast says rain tomorrow, so perhaps this latest dump will soon be history. Rocky would be disappointed but I personally would be thrilled. And, I realize it's hard to complain to Nat and Susan, who've had more snow than the rest of us put together this year.

See you all later!

VictoriaL

Welcome Back, Susan! Sounds like the trip was successful (even though the snow followed you) and isn't is good to be back home? :)

seathyme, our snow is melting too but there's another storm (and frigid weather) on the horizon. But, this is the last week of February-- yippee!

Well, it has been a while, but I have something to report: :D

10 whole minutes on the dreaded (although not quite so much, now) exercise bike!

I woke today feeling soreness in my leg muscles and back, but the foot looked good, so I thought I'd just jump right in... Our bike has an electronic thing where I can program the resistance level and variations, so I chose level 3 (out of 10) and flat terrain. It was easy. :) Afterward, I showered than gave poor foot a long soaking. This evening, I'm not much worse for wear.

Ahhhh, first actual exercise in 6 weeks and 2 days!

Hope that you all have had a good start to your weeks.

Natasha
02-25-2008, 05:30 PM
Yay Vicci!! I bet it'll be a long time 'til you complain about the dreaded EB again ;)

LOL about BA being short for Big A** :D The recipe was from the March Bon Appetit.

Carrie, how fun that you got all that support and excitement on your regular run! I'm interested that you report your runs in k instead of miles, BTW - glad to have some company on that front ;) (though I often report them here in miles, too).

Kathy, sounds like you've been crazy busy! Hang in there and take care of yourself!

Hi to Les (how're you feeling?), Susan (welcome back), and everyone else. Off to spin soon. :)

Leslie Ferguson

Busy day and a little tiring here, as it sounds like it was in other places.

I'm rooting for you Vicci and concur with making sure you don't overdo it coming back. But I do remember what it feels like to start back working out after a forced hiatus -- love it and relish the time, even if it's only 10 minutes.
Welcome back Susan, I'd be interested to hear about the Sleep Deprivation Team... sounds like something up my alley. ;)
I'm so glad to hear and live vicariously in the workouts of the VRB now - but I'm going to live into my getting healthy for real and not overdo it. As Kathy said, I'm not as young as I used to be. And it's good for her to keep plugging along even when she's tired.

Hats off to those who are recovering or have family members who are recovering.

Confirmed with my doc that I'm makign progress and my flu is behaving and running it's course. LW got home today and guess what? She sick right now too. Not flu (thank goodness) but probably an allergy or some other bug - she's not carrying the fever or terrible muscle pain just tired.

Rested today and will rest tomorrow for certain (and probably on wednesday too). If there's one benefit to my flu I've lost sight of my lack of response on my intership - but soon I'll be clear enough to become concerned again - hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday. :(

Back to studies since they didn't stop when I did this weekend.

Happy trails,
Les

Another quick drive by that I wish were a run by. I'm feeling much better (although congested and tired), but ds #2 is still down with it. He ended up feverish and barfy, the poor guy. I'll attempt some quick personal responses, but forgive me if I miss someone. I'm on call, you know. :D

Les - Hang in there and take care of yourself. Sorry the sickness has lasted so long. There was a girl in ds's class who missed 8 days of school, made two trips to the doc and one to the ER with this flu. Oy! I hope your recovery is much smoother.
Natasha - How was your spin?
Victoria - Hooray! I'm thrilled for you that you got in a some exercise. You must feel great.
Seathyme - Good going on avoiding the ice-patch-itis. I hope your good luck continues and the weather is kind to you.
Susan - Welcome back. Did you get in that spin? Dh didn't watch the whole TdC, but he did go up and watch the finish in person. I won't tell what happened, but will say he had a great time. I love stories about meeting racers in person. Dh has a signed poster of Lance somewhere in his goody bag of stuff.
Newsomz - Funny about your accidental marathon run. I like the idea of a cheering squad to help me through my runs.

Hello to Tcutie, KathyB, Elizabeth, Legolas, Aggie and the rest of the gang. Take your vitamins, drink your fluids and rest up. The bugs that are going around are no fun. Here's to your health.

TKay, sorry to hear you had to bail on the 10K but glad to hear you got some rest and are feeling better. Will you set your sights on another race?

Les, sorry to hear you are still dealing with the flu. It's always amazing to me what an illness like that can do to an otherwise very healthy person. Hope your LW feels better soon and stays clear of the flu.

Vicci, great to hear the progress you are making with your ankle! And LOL about your "BA" cinnamon rolls comment. *snort*

Carrie, that's hysterical about your "marathon" run! I would be soooo embarrassed if that happened to me! :o

Dani, I do a lot of treadmill runs, and I too set the incline to 1% to better simulate road running. I agree that treadmill runs are physically easier, but mentally, they are soooooo much harder for me. I have done two hour-long outdoor runs in the past week, and they seem to go by so much faster than an hour on the treadmill.

I bailed on my running buddy Sunday morning (partly because I wasn't feeling well, and partly because it looked like it might rain - I wasn't concerned about running in the rain but I didn't want to take my new car out of the garage and have it get rained on my first day home with it! :o). So last night, I went out and did the same route I did last week, only this time I started a little earlier and it was clearer out so it stayed light longer. I managed to finish before it got dark, which was much nicer than last time. I also shaved a couple of minutes off last week, and when I drove the route this morning, I confirmed that it was 5.7 miles. Felt really good. DH came looking for me when I was about a mile from home, because he wanted to make sure I was doing OK, and he said I looked really strong. :)

My plans are to get another shorter run in during the week (maybe 3-4 miles) and then do a longer run this Sunday with my running buddy. He is only two weeks away from the half marathon he's planning to do, so I think he wants to up the mileage.

Hey to everyone else - hope you are all having a great week! :D

Aggie - Yes, I'm going to pick another race soon. I want to do the SB half in May, but would like to squeeze in a 10K before that. We'll see how things go. There are lots to choose from out here, so I'm sure I'll find something. Good going on your run. Nice to shave your time down. Hope you're still feeling well.

Ds is down with the flu yet again today. Oy! While I'm feeling better, I'm still dragging tail a bit, so it's actually okay with me that he's not in school. It's a good excuse to sit on the couch and rest with him. I wish he was feeling better, but it's kind of nice to have some one-on-one at the same time.

Hope you're all hanging in there with your colds, flus, injuries, weather issues and whatnot.

Well when you put it that way, we are rather a beseiged bunch, aren't we? But tough! VRB's wobble but they don't fall down. Or rather, when we fall down we do eventually get up again... (right Vicci?)

The good news here is that snow and ice are melting. The other news is that it's quite grey and blah outside. Nevertheless, I did run 4.5 miles this morning.

Oh and Eva, maybe only in Phoenix could you even imagine protecting your new car from RAIN. Here I consider rain a free car wash.:D

Hope everyone is having a good, or at least a tolerable, day.

eta: Happy Birthday, TKay! Just saw this on the other thread. Hope you'll get to do something fun after caring for a sick ds...

LOL! I know, I have gotten sooooo spoiled since moving here. :o I heard a radio announcer on Monday comment that it looked like the rain was past, so this was a good week to wash your cars. One of the attorneys in our office drives a HUGE truck that doesn't fit in our parking garage, so he has to park it outside in the high profile lot. On days that it looks like it will rain, he drives his wife's car so he can park inside. :D

Yup, I was feeling pretty BA while sitting around waiting on my bones to mend... ;)

Nat, send cinnamon rolls! And you're right about that EB, we are friends now-- at least until I'm back on my trails.

Les, I hope that you're still taking it easy (and feeling better, as well)

TKay, same goes for you. One of DH's clients has 7 kids (his wife home-schools, the crazy woman!) and last winter they were all sick with the flu at once. He was describing how they set up a hospital ward in the family room with cots and sleeping bags so that they could help each other and I was just amazed. I guess that it could be worse for you. ;)

Aggie, our poor jeep is layered with salt and that goopy grey stuff which they spray on the roads before it's supposed to sleet. DH is anxious to take it to the car wash, if it ever clears up. I think he'd even pull it out of the garage if we got a nice, hard rainstorm! So, send rain (and warmth!)

seathyme,a run is a good run even in the gloom that is February in the northeast. :) It's almost March, and none too soon!

Another marathon 10 minutes on the EB this morning plus I prepared breakfast and lunch all by my lonesome since I convinced DH that I could do it and that he really should get started to those taxes. Feels good to accomplish things! :D

Happy Birthday TKay, sorry that you have a sick DS and I'm with seathyme that you should do something for you - get DH to take the kids and have a day out. Hopefully you feel better soon too.
seathyme - You got it - VRB wobble and sometimes fall down but bounce back up. 4.5 on a grey, blah day - sounds like a good morning really and YEAH that your snow is melting.
aggie - too funny aboput your car and not getting rained on it's first day in your house. Nice of DH to come looking for you too just to make sure you're safe as darkness approached. That's love.
Vicci - Good bike ride and it sounds like you're on the mend too. I'm happy that you're having fun on your EB - the trail will open soon enough.

Thanks all, I'm doing better today and every day since Sunday. I was tempted to try something but also know that it's only been 3 days since my temp was over 101 so that's a bad plan. So I'll be smart and rest and let things break up a little more. Now I just wish LW could feel a little better and luckily her fever broke last night too so she'll be home free soon. Good news, I was called and accepted the call at one of the remaining Internship sites - my first choice (or at least the one that I felt "best" about). If anyone wants to see where I'll be interning starting in the Fall, I'll be at St. Anne's Episcopal Church (http://www.stannes-reston.org). So that is over and done with and I can just focus on school now.

Hope folks are on the mend and I can't wait to do some running soon but for now I'll keep things on an even keel and recover first.

Happy trails,
Les

Les - Congrats! Tha'ts such wonderful news. And, yes, definitely lay off the workouts for another day or two. They'll be there when you're healthy again.

TKay - Happy bday! V. glad to see you're still committed to the half.

Aggie - Love the car story. V. sweet of DH to watch after you. We bought a car this week, too, but it's on order, so no celebrating til April.

Vicci - you rock! Definitely on your way back

Just finished a spin. It felt really good. Hadn't worked out since Sun. I was watching the recording of Tour of California, which was more motivating than I expected. Found myself picking it up as the guys sprinted for the finish :-)

P.S. DH is now on his very first BB, dedicated to the car we just bought (geek! At least mine is about food). I commented how it's the exact same software as CL. He just looked over my shoulder to see how many posts I have & freaked!

Les - Good to hear you're feeling better. Keep resting and no running until you're fully recovered! Woohoo about getting your first choice of internship. That is wonderful!

Tkay - I hope you and DS are better by now :) Did you get to get away (a little) for your birthday?

Eva - Great job on the run! Sounds like it was fun, too.

seathyme - Good for you for running in the gloomy weather. I am very impressed.

Vicci - I am sooo glad to hear things are moving along :) Did you enjoy the brownie drops? Good luck on the exercise bike.

Natasha - Hope you had a good spin! I decided to keep things in km because it makes more sense to me :) I set my Nike+ to km so I have to do conversions to report things in miles, lol.

Susan - Welcome back! Good for you getting in some exercise while on a work trip.. I am not usually successful at that. Funny about DH freaking out about your posts, lol.

Kathy - Wow! Sounds like you've been working a lot. What type of floor do you work on? I hope you get some relief soon.

I took Monday & Tuesday off since I felt I was on the verge of overtraining. Today I did a lovely 5K. I was happy that my legs felt light and back to 100% :)

Les - Congrats on the internship! It must be such a relief to have that decision behind you. And to get the one you wanted? Even better. I agree that you might hold back on the workouts for a bit longer. Don't want to relapse. Hope LW is feeling better soon too.
Newsomz - Sounds like you're doing great with your training. Glad your legs were nice and springy! I love that feeling.
Susan - Did you finish the entire tour? I won't say anything until I know for sure. Funny about dh and the postings.
Nat - Thanks for the good wishes.
Victoria - Hooray for 10 minute spins. Sounds like you are on the mend for sure.
Seathyme - Good job on the run despite the grey skies.

Thanks for my birthday wishes everyone. I ended up enjoying a quiet evening at home. I started to feel achy again, so didn't go anywhere. Ds is back at school today, and I feel so free! Had a meeting this morning and now off to do something non-work, non-caretaker and non-chore-related. Maybe a pedicure? :p I feel like I'm ditching school.

No workouts to report until I'm sure I'm 100 percent. I'm like Les. I want to be positive this nagging bug is completely behind me before putting my body to the test. Movies this weekend for my birthday. I couldn't be happier!

Hello runners!

Congrats to Les for getting your first choice and best fit for the internship. I'm glad you are feeling better! And LW is too.

TKay -- happy belated birthday!

Newsomz -- I'm glad that your couple days off were enough to make for a great run yesterday.

Susan -- what kind of car did you buy?

Seathyme -- belated congratulations on getting the house. When do you expect to move?

Aggie -- congrats on your new car. I saw the pictures on the other thread...very lovely. The rain is a free car wash for me too.

Kathy B -- you are working a lot! I did some pharmacist hours at the hospital on Sunday and it was crazy busy.

Hi to Natasha, Legolas, Elizabeth, Vicci, and everyone else!

I ran today and am looking forward to a work trip to Miami tomorrow. I'm looking forward to running in shorts, although my legs are pasty!

Kathy

TKay - I'm only on stage 3 of the race. I'll let you know when I finish. Your bday sounds totally like my pace -- nice & relaxing, good movie, good family.

KTG - I'll wait til we actually get the car b4 spilling :-)

Legolas - good to hear from you. Been running/walking/exercising?

I'm going to check out a new running group tonight. I've been putting it off for a few months (bad weather/bad meeting spot/other plans). I was going to bail tonight b/c I don't feel in shape enough, but DH talked me into going. I'm hoping a new group will be a nice change = motivation! I'll check in tomorrow w/a report.

TKay - The birthday plans sound nice. Glad you are getting an extended birthday!

Kathy - Miami should be a nice change - enjoy! You'll certainly be able to run in shorts b/c I have been in shorts up in North Florida.

Susan - I have all the same excuses as you for not hooking up with the local running group. Let us know how it went!

I got in a beautifully sunny 5K today (it was rainy a few days ago so I'm enjoying the sun). Going for a bike ride tomorrow after work and then a run on Sat or Sun (haven't decided yet).

Lots of business today and I've read but don't have time to respond to everyone individually. However I hope that you had fun tonight Susan with your new running group.

Thank you for the congratulations. That's a big deal off my plate to not have to worry about one more internship. Now it's just classes and projects. :rolleyes

Getting better every day but I'm happy to rest today - still a little iffy with what appears to be one of the side effects of the Tamiflu - nothing terrible just a side effect.

Need to go and do some reading (2 chapters - nothing much) that I need to read and summarize for class tomorrow morning. So until later -- have a good Friday and happy trails,
Les

Hi all!

Wow - crazy times here. Lots of things on the go and in flux but one thing I do know about sure is that we're going back to Halifax on holiday this year!! :D :D :D A major airline had a huge one-day-only seat sale today so when one of my colleagues told me about it I jumped at the chance to book. Yayyyy... I love Nova Scotia.

Les, smart boy to rest today and enjoy your feeling of relief about having the internship sorted out! (Yes, I know you have reading to do but hopefully you can still relax a bit.)

Susan, hope you enjoyed your run with the group! I didn't do the run club thing for many years either but when I did start was glad that I did. :)

Sounds like both Kathys have been busy lately!

Carrie, good job on the run, and enjoy the ride.

TKay, did you get your pedicure? What movies did you see?

Vicci, did your DH do the taxes? Mine did his for the most part but I still need to do mine. Maybe this weekend.

Seathyme, count me as another one impressed by your running determination!

Hi also to Legolas, Betsy, Eva, Mary, and the rest of the gang.

Oh yeah - running-related stuff :p I did a spin yesterday but nothing today because I was spending time with my mom. We just made banana muffins and I think it's time to sample one. Tomorrow I *must* run. I'm just craving it.

Take care, all!

Yep Nat - relaxed a little tonight. What a deal going to Nova Scotia again too. Great job!

Happy trails all,
