In 1939 in Los Angeles, on Sunset Blvd. there was a cafe that served hamburgers with either a sauce/spread with some type of finely chopped nuts, or in the hamburger itself. can't find a receipe for above.

Tom,
I gave this a bit of thought and searched a little on the web, but couldn t find anything like this. So all I can do is bump this topic up to the top in the hopes that someone else will see it and be able to help you. Sorry...

Hi Tom. Try contacting Gourmet or Bon Appetit. Many readers search for restaurant recipes and they track them down. If the restaurant closed maybe they have an idea or something that might help.....its worth the try.
The cavalry has arrived. (Maybe I had this because I'm a little nutty myself.) Although these recipes predate me quite a bit, having grown up in LA, I'm curious what cafe this was.
Hope this is what you wanted.
DRIVE-IN NUT BURGER I AND II
(Preface from recipe book: Often we are astonished at how far back our recipe files go. When a reader wrote "Culinary SOS" and asked for a hamburger recipe topped with nuts from a drive-in that existed in the 1930's, the card file produced two recipes that purported to be from the popular teen hangout. So we printed them both. The caused quite a flood of mail, most of it contending that the second recipe, with the addition of some Russian dressing on the bottom half of the bun, was the real thing.)
1 grilled hamburger patty
1 hamburger bun
Chopped salted peanuts
Lettuce leaves
Tomato slices
Onion slices
Thousand Island Dressing
1 slice American Cheese, optional
On the bottom of the bun, place the hamburger, and sprinkle with chopped nuts. Serve with lettuce, tomato, and onion slices and Thousand Island Dressing. If a cheeseburger is desired, partially grill the patty, top with nuts, 1 slice cheese, and finish grilling until cheese melts. Cover with top half of bun.
Makes 1 serving
DRIVE IN NUT-BURGER II
1 grilled hamburger patty
1 hamburger bun
Chunky-style peanut butter, macadamia nut butter, pecan nut butter, or any other nut butter
Lettuce leaves, optional
Tomato slices, optional
Place the hamburger patty on the hamburger bun, and spread with the nut butter. Finish grilling until peanut butter melts slightly. Top with lettuce leaves and tomato slices. Cover with top half of bun.
Makes 1 Serving

Gail, you're amazing! Where did you find those recipes? And why am I suddenly remembering a line from the old horror movies: "If only that genius could be harnessed for good"? No, no, I'm just kidding! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
Cheers, Phoebe

Actually, you're not far off. My father used to always refer to me as "a compendium of useless knowledge." http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thanks Gail, I think this is what I was looking for, the russian dressing sounds like what I could remember as a young lad of seven, when I ate the nutburger, thats again.
