Does anybody know what these are and how I could make them at home? We always get lemon shake-ups at the county fair, and they're my favorite! Any thoughts???

TIA - Heather

Heather....I have never had one and not knowing what they taste or look like, I found these two recipes. Good Luck

Lemon Shake-Ups

1 handful ice
1/2 large lemon
1/4 cup sugar

Fill a 16 oz insulated cup about 3/4 full of loose ice pieces.
Squeeze the lemon juice into the cup, (add lemon wedges or rind if you want to, I do). Fill cup to within 3/4 inch from top with water. Add about 1/4 cup of sugar, (more or less to taste, important that sugar is added last)

Place a larger tapered cup over contents cup, and shake back and
forth until sugar is mostly dissolved, (blenders or mixers are
cheating!).

Lemon Concoction

3 scoops vanilla ice cream
juice of two lemons
6 oz 7-up (sprite substitutes nicely)
1 oz simple syrup

Blend ingredients, top with whipped cream, serve in a frosted glass

Thanks -- the first one sounds like the real deal from the fair!

I will be trying it out and let you know.

munchies, I have never heard of these, but it looks like lemonade from the first recipe. What makes this different?

Just wondering
Erin:)

Erin --

Lemon shake ups are basically a lemonade drink, but they are much "fresher" and they just have a different taste -- kind of homestyle. I guess they just have good memories for me from when I was a kid and when bought these at the 4-H fair. It's just one of those summertime things. The other nice thing is that you can make yourself on big glass of this, but not the whole lemonade. I guess that's not such a good explanantion, but....what can I say?!? Try them and see. They are worth it!

Heather,

I LOVE lemon shakeups!! Last summer at the fair, there was also strawberry shakeups and orange shakeups. Just use the recipe Mamasue posted, only substituting strawberries or oranges for the lemons. You may need to adjust the sugar to taste. This is making me hungry for elephant ears!

You are OBVIOUSLY not from the midwest!!!:D

Elephant ears are these horribly sinful pieces of fried white dough sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Ther are HUGE and are basically shaped like the ear of an elephant, hince the name. You share them with many others, they are so big (at least I used to have to) and they are sold at every fair/festival I was ever at in the midwest!!!

If you want to NOT like them, think of them and white flour and grease, then dont ever try one!;)

funny thing, as I look at the locations of both Saralee and Munchies, I see they are both from the Midwest (Munchies, another Hoosier here...)

This post is making me SOOOOOOOO homesick!!!

I'm really happy to get a lemon shake-up recipe. I'm going to make it today and think about all the country fairs I use to go to in Indiana. (I will just think about the elephant ears!:))

I grew up in South Carolina and we call them Elephant Ears. I just checked with my husband, who grew up in NC, and he also knows what they are!

Actually, when I had them in Myrtle Beach, they didnt have cinnamon and sugar, they had pizza toppings!

Well, the Myrtle Beach ones must have been some "trendy" attempt at Elephant Ears! Trust me, we have tried-and-true fried dough with cinnamon and sugar Elephant Ears down South.

I was wondering if everybody would know what these shake-ups were, and I'm thrilled that it's bringing back good memories for you guys too!

Mmmm....elephant ears, cotton candy, lemon shakeups, corn dogs, the list of fair food goes on and on. I am amazed that some of you have never had elephant ears -- what a treat!

Thanks for sharing .... by the way, I made the shakeups today, and they are perfect. I will have to try it with strawberries and oranges. I'd never thought about that!

Thanks again everybody!

Heather

--- Homesick for Indiana??? I've never heard such a thing! :D

You guys are cracking me up! It's so interesting how our food experiences are related to our environment.

Some pretty good descriptions of elephant ears have been given. I can't imagine how many calories are in these deep fried pieces of love.

Another specialty at our fair is the Pork Producers stand. I'm not a very big meat eater, but this stand is so tasy. They have these HUGE butterflied pork chops grilled and served with a special sauce. The pork burgers are also pretty popular. It's all locally grown pork, and right next door is the "dairy bar", which is where the dairy people serve ice cream.

Our local fair is full of lots of community programs like 4-H and home extension and we have horse races and lots of displays. But I always look forward to all of the food.:)

Here on Long Beach Island in NJ Elephant Ears are more of a flakey pastry, huge like and elephant's ear of course, with sugar and cinnamon and nuts.....and if you are really decadent, chocolate swirled on top. Think less of fried dough (though my favorite fried dough concoction at the fair is zeppole - I go just for them) and more like puff pastry. Puff pastry on steroids.:D
