Hi Rustysmom!

Here are my favorites from July, in no particular order

Black-eyed Pea Salad with Sour Cream Dressing
Chile-Vinegar Turnip Greens
Curried Couscous with Dried Cranberries (another potluck winner)
Chipotle-Maple Sweet Potatoes
Asian Beef Noodle Salad

For what it's worth, here's what STILL remains on my "To Make" list from July, mostly based on reviews from the BB:

Sugar-Snap-Pea Salad with Sweet Ginger-Soy Dressing
Tomato Salad With Balsamic-Olive Vinaigrette
Fresh Tomato Pesto Pizza
Orzo Salad with Corn, Tomatoes and Basil
White Bean, Tomato, and Spinach Salad
Moussaka with Eggplant and Peppers and Yogurt Bechamel
Apples Baked in Phyllo with Pear and Pecan Filling
Deep Dish Apricot-Apple Betty
Coconut Tapioca with Glazed Apricots

Now to find the time!

Happy cooking,

Julie

I second the curried couscous... I just made it yesterday to have for lunch this week. I lowered the fat by reducing the olive oil..it really doesn't need as much as it calls for.

DELICIOUS!

I just posted a new thread about the only recipe I have made from July: the Grilled Shrimp and Plum Skewers with Sweet Hoisin Sauce. I thought it was really fabulous and easy!

Sugar snap pea slad and Orzo salad with corn and tomatos are both must tries. easy, summery dishes using seasonal ingredients. I also tried the blueberry gelato which, I have to say, I disliked so much I threw it away!

The Curried Couscous Salad With Dried Cranberries is the only recipe from the July 01 issue that I've made. I thought it was okay (I think my garlic cloves were really big and it was too garlicky for me) DH didn't like it at all. So I gave the leftovers to my mother to take for lunch and she loved it.

I don't have the issue in front of me - so pardon if any of my titles being a little off

These were excellent:
Summer Vegetable Salad with Grilled Bread
Strawberry-Buttermilk Gelato
Sugar-Snap-Pea Salad with Sweet Ginger-Soy Dressing

I liked all of the meatless main dish salads - the only one that I wouldn't repeat was the Asian Noodle one

I tried the Summer Vegetable Salad with Grilled Bread and thought it was fabulous. I also liked the Curried Couscous but I would make some adjustments next time. I get overwhelmed when there is a lot of zest, so I would reduce the orange zest next time - maybe by half. I would also cut down the amount of garlic. When I'm cooking garlic, more is better, but when it's raw, a little goes a long way! I also plan to up the curry - the orange and garlic overwhelmed it. Sounds like this is not a positive review, but I really did like it! :)

we really enjoyed the Fresh Tomato Pesto Pizza and the Orzo Salad with Corn, Tomatoes, and Basil. Both of those are definite keepers. We also tried the Turkey-Vegetable Wraps, but found them to be nothing special.

we also liked the Grilled Shrimp and Plum Skewers with Sweet Hoisin Sauce, but I think that was from the June issue...

The Grilled Tomato, Smoked Turkey, and Meunster Sandwich was delicious. It is quick and easy- two of my favorite things in a recipe!

My favorite was the Roast-Chicken and Cranberry Sandwiches . I've loved every recipe I've tried with poultry and fruit though (chicken and apricots for example) so I knew I would like this one too.

Also, I third the vote for the Lobster Chowder.

I still haven't tried any of the gelatos though. Why does icy stuff scare me in recipes? Isn't that weird? Couldn't be simpler, could it?

I have made the Lemon Ginger Sorbet(to) and thought it was wonderful. Very tangy and loved the taste of the ginger.

I have a couple of other things on the menu list for the week, so I'll let you all know how they turn out.

DH was out of town the first part of the month, so I've been just cooking for one and DD who only counts as a half. Now that he is back its time to start trying out some new recipes.

The Strawberry Buttermilk Gelato was amazing. So was the Curried Couscous Salad with Dried Cranberries.

Another vote for the curried couscous. Also, my dinner group loved the teriyaki chicken with apricot ketchup and we liked both the pineapple-coconut and wild blueberry gelatos.

What am I doing wrong? Everytime I cook shrimp on the gas grill it comes out hard and dry. I am not cooking it longer than suggested in the recipe.

i want to add another 'best of' to my list...

we had the Deep Dish Apricot-Apple Betty the other night and it was fabulous! i halved the recipe and made it in 4 ramekins and it was just delicious (w/ or w/o ice cream on top!)

i also made the Blackberry-Lemon Upside Down Cake from June 2000 last night, which was also delicious. I substituted blueberries for the blackberries, but it was still pretty darn tasty!

marisa :)

p.s. art: i wish i could help you with your shrimp problem. DH does all the grilling, so i don't even know how to tell when things are done grilling. DH never uses a timer or goes by what a recipe says, though. Maybe the recipes are listing cooking times that are too long, or maybe you have the heat too high on your grill. good luck; maybe someone else can be of more help!

I am no expert, but I am learning. I cook the shrimp until they are no longer translucent and grey. Basically, as soon as they look white and pink all over they are finished. Anyone have anything to add to that?

BTW, there is an interesting article on the Cooks Illustrated website about grilling shrimp. It is worth checking out.

I might have to put them on the top rack over a lower heat than I do now. Cooks Illustrated website is new to me. I will do a search for it.
Thank you for your help!:D
