Thanks everyone for the replies on the bouncy seat/swing. I think I'll pick up at least a bouncy seat. I tried Craigslist but then it was going to be too much running around and I got irritated. It doesn't take much these days! I wish I could find a good yard sale or consignment sale.

2H--Could you wait even just a couple of weeks for a bouncy? I'm not sure where you are, but in my neck of the woods garage sale season is just starting.
mst--Thanks for your back advice. What exactly was your diagnosis? I had PT this week and the therapist told me I had an "up-slip." Basically, pelvic muscles and ligaments are very relaxed bc of pregnancy and this caused my tailbone/pelvic area to go out of alignment. She assured me it was common during pregnancy, not harmful to the bean and "fixable." Have you heard of this? Anyone? I have been assigned to PT twice a week for the next three weeks. I wish, wish, wish it could wait until the summer and when school is out--May is SO busy--but alas...and I would certainly like to be more comfortable!
Ultrasound coming up in a couple of weeks! We are going to keep the sex a surprise, but it will be good to see this little critter.
Melissa
Greetings everyone! Welcome to all the new mommies-to-be! We have such a big gap between early October and late November - are there lurkers out there?
Well, I finally found and saw a new OB who I'm very happy with. She was recommended by a friend of my SIL and seemed very down-to-earth and compassionate without being gushy. Exactly what I need. And my big ultrasound is scheduled for next Friday so we should find out the sex then. Yay! Since I keep referring to "her", better that I know now and can switch pronouns if it's a boy.
I don't think I posted before that one of my friends (now a long distance friend) is pregnant as well, and due only a day before me. Yay! Would have been so much fun to do it all together, and will still be fun, even if over phone and email.
I ended up emailing my friend with fertility issues and it has worked out okay. I didn't hear back from her until I emailed again 3 weeks later, apologizing for what I assumed to be my having angered or upset her. Turns out she'd replied quickly but some emails had gotten lost. She's doing all right, bummed since my other pg friend (above) is a close friend of hers as well so it's doubly hard on her.
Gotta run. DH and DS just came in from stomping in puddles and apparently DS went kersploosh. :p

Michelle--Just saw your post at the end of the April thread. I think I had four people this week tell me I didn't look pregnant...that's including two of my girlfriends who seemed slightly disapointed. I'm trying! :p But it is my first and I'm 5'10" so I think my body is just hiding it well...My mom (taller than me) said she didn't show for quite awhile with me. In the meantime, I'll keep using those rubber bands!
I had two meltdowns before noon today. A new record! And what were they about, you may ask? When DH asked I said "Everything is annoying me and stressing me out!" Poor guy. He effectively calmed me down. Sigh. I'm over it for now. :D
I've been following the bouncy seat conversation with interest. All the gear intimidates me. I've read that a NEW crib (not a hand me down) is important safety-wise. Have you guys heard that too? We have the opportunity to acquire a free crib, three years old and only used by one kid.
Enjoy your weekends!

Melissa
definitely take it. a 3 year old crib is like new as far as the safety issues are concerned. way back in the "dark ages" cribs weren't as safe because some had rungs that were too far apart and kids could get stuck in there or whatever. nowadays, all cribs have to meet safety regulations. I don't know when the rules took effect but it was definitely way farther back than three years ago.
if anyone is trying to decide on WHICH bouncy seat to get, we love our fisher price puppy bouncer. it is so cute and great and the music/sounds are fun and not annoying.

Hi Ladies - I have been lurking for a while and finally decided to post. If you can add me to the list -
JRM24 - Due 8/20 - Surprise!
I am in my 24th week with my first child. So far so good. Next week I have my glucose test - so I probably should stop eating so much sugar! I really don't want to fail.
I really enjoy listening to the topics posted and will try to join in!

Hi ladies, checking in at 39 weeks today. Really ready for Maddie's arrival....tried it all today, Pedicure, the most spicy green chicken curry I've ever had, etc. She seems determined to make me wait. I am really wishing I hadn't agreed to work up to my due date.....I've decided Friday will be my last day regardless of progress. I am not working past my EDD!
Mabvt--I didn't shart showing until around 24 weeks I don't think, and I am 5'2. I was in a wedding at 20 weeks, so I am sure my BFF was secretly happy I fit in with the others. I think everyone is different. I also would take the hand me down crib.....3 years is pretty new....you'd probably use one you bought for a 2nd child, right? I had heard that some like to buy their own new mattress....but if it is coming from a close friend/family member....I don't see the problem.
Re: the bouncy, we ended up with the Fischer Price rainforest bouncer. I don't love the look but it got great reviews in Baby 411 which was our jumping off point for all of the gear we purchased.
Anyone have a good source (online) for baby decorating stuff? I need a couple more items for the walls and then we are done. I am loving our nursery, I'll have to post pictures when it is all done. The curtains are due in on Friday and will be installed the follow week...can't wait!
LBD--Glad your friend took the news ok. I am sure it is hard for her, so I am sure she appreciated your tact in telling her. That is also great about a friend being due around the same time. I have a neighborhood friend that is due two days after me, love spending time with them as she and I are on the same wave-length and our DH's love having someone else in the same boat.
JRM24--Congrats and welcome. Don't worry too much about the glucose test, I don't think you need to eat differently or anything before it. You want the results to be indicative of your true function. That said, I failed the first test and had to take the 3 hour (and passed) but the 3 hour one was no fun!
Ok--I've written a book here. Hope all are well and hanging in there. Off to the couch to watch a movie with DH and the dog!
2Hungry- you won't regret having the bouncy. And, you can re-coup some of your money if you sell it on Craigslist. It is amazing the amount of money that you will spend on your child without thinking too much about it!
Melissa- I have had so many diagnosises. I have scoliosis (sp), but I really think it is just that I am a small person who carries big babies. I have gained 50% of my body weight in pregnancy weight (and I have never been told to watch my weight- I am within the normal realm). So, it just throws off my whole alignment. I was in maternity clothes at 6 weeks- literally. Two pounds changes my whole body regularly, so a pregnancy just is so much for me. Even my little nephew was commenting on my body- I just look really unbalanced. If it makes you feel better, I was going to a chiropractor three times a week, acupunture two times a week, and massage once a week...all at the same time. They tried to add in PT, but I was not in favor of it since I went three times a week through my whole pregnancy last time, and it did nothing. I would take the three year old crib with no hesitation. I am using my neice/nephew's crib for this new baby (until DD moves to her big girl bed). It is eight years old. And, then we will put the baby into DD's crib- which is three years old. Val is right about the older cribs and the slats. Not a problem with newer cribs. Also, get the book "Baby Bargains"- it really helps with the gear overload. And, keep in mind that years ago, babies grew up just fine without all of this stuff. If you decide that you need something that you did not get, you can always go out and buy it.
Lbd- I switched doctors this time, and I am so much happier. So much. But, I bumped into the old doctor in the maternity unit (we went to go sneak a peek at the babies!) He saw my husband and was like, "what are you doing here?" Then he saw my belly. It was a little uncomfortable, since I am sure he never realized before that I switched doctors.
JRM- Welcome!
Susan- you sound ready. Hope your daughter will be here soon. In the last thread, you made a good point that I wanted to emphasize. One stroller is not going to get you through your stroller years. Like, we got a regular stroller that we could also hook the carseat into. But, then we wanted a jogging stroller since the "mall" stroller is not fabulous for exercising. Then, we got an umbrella stroller, because sometimes is it easier to have a light little thing. We just bought a sit and stroll for DD and the baby, and we are borrowing a Snap and Go. Our close friends bought the Bugaboo (which runs close to $1000), and they have bought multiple strollers also. So, expensive does not mean that you still don't need options!

JRM -- Welcome! I'm sorry, its too late to edit my post. We'll have to add you next time.
Mab -- I would absolutely take the crib as long as it still has all the parts. I would buy a new matress though. A matress is cheap though compared to a crib. I second Baby Bargains. It made shopping so much easier!
Susan -- I'm with you on wishing I wasn't working up until the due date. For decorations, I don't have an online source, but we actually found a lot of cute baby art at Homegoods. I was amazed. I guess you could try art.com, but I've never looked at their kiddie stuff. Hang in there!
I found out that Graco sells a frame for the carseat that vibrates and swings so I think I am going to go with that if I can't find anything else. I want to have more kids so I want something I can store easily. We got the same type of frame thing for the stroller, and figure we'll be shopping for a full sized one around Christmas. I told my Mom that and she thought it was hysterical that I already had my baby's first Christmas present picked out. I got a sling and a carrier too and I think I'll perfer those to the stroller for walks anyway.

Welcome JRM!
Thanks to all for the advice on the crib--that all makes sense. They made such a big deal at my class about not using old car seats I think when I heard about not not using old cribs I transfered the information.
Also, I happened across Baby Bargains at the library today, so I'm going to take a look at that tonight. I just made myself a frozen strawberry/juicy juice/sprite "cocktail to enjoy. :D A margarita, it's not!

mabvt--I mistyped earlier, Baby Bargains was our bible before we bought anything. Baby 411 is what we have on hand for once we actually have a baby!!!!
2Hungry--We checked out HomeGoods last week and found a cute clock. DH installed it this afternoon.
Still nothing here, ladies. I have an OB appt in the AM....hoping for some progress. Dh took our cars to the police station today for the carseat appt. For first timers, I would highly recommend it. We got great tips and even after reading all of the directions, etc. we didn't have the seats in optimal position. Definately worth it.

Just wanted to pop in (again!) to say that I too was having trouble finding wall art that, a. was cute and b. didn't cost a fortune. I was looking on Ebay and found this GREAT website. The artist is wonderful and so nice to do business with.
Here's the site:
http://farmhousefive.com/store/
We ordered quite a few prints for Kylie's room and bought inexpensive wood frames at Michael's to put them in. She has the Spring Butterfly Art Print Set. They look so cute and weren't expensive at all. I would post a picture if I knew how!

Ugh.
This morning I got up with a cold and a flat tire. Add that to the fact that yesterday we discovered that someone or something had broken the latch on our back gate, and I am not having a very good day. Also, we spent forever trying to get the car seat in yesterday and we did not do a good job at all. I have an inspection scheduled for tomorrow, so hopefully I can throw myself on their mercy and they will fix it for me.
So, I just had kind of a painful tightening around my stomach that sort of spread to my back. Was it an early contraction or just the baby redecorating? Time will tell I guess.
ETA -- I had a few more episodes and then they stopped. What a releif! I didn't want to have a baby on a day that started off so bad.

2Hungry - I hope your day gets better; it sounds like you were definitely having some contractions, but you have intermittent ones well before you deliver - just your body prepping! Good luck on the car seat - installing them while hugely pregnant is just an experience in torture.
Leigh - Thank you for the link to the art website; I found some wall art that goes perfectly with the crib bedding for David's room as well as some new things for Ethan's room.
Susan - I hope you get good news at your OB appt today!
Meredith - still thinking about you and hoping your new baby arrives soon so your body can get back to normal, yet sleep deprived. :D

2Hungry--Sounds like your body is getting ready. Drink lots of water and lay down or move positions....if they stop it is probably BH....but it is all your body getting ready. So sorry about the bad day! That stinks. Hope you are feeling better. I am finding the pollen is killing me and I am not usually prone to allergies. I have a headache/sore throat/stuffy head. Not fun.
Here is my Update at just over 39 weeks...
I was 2cm dialated and 70% effaced. She "stirred the pot" which hurt like all H*LL but hopefully will get things moving. My legs are very swollen and BP was quite high. They took it 4 times, 3 times it was over 130 and then they had me lay down for a bit and it was lower again around 110.... trace of protein in the urine but no large swing in weight (gain) since last week so they are only mariginally worried.
We did an NST and I am definately having contractions, but obviously not of an intensity to put me into active labor :(
So, I go back on Thursday, if BP is still up, they could send me to Labor and Delivery right away. Otherwise, if I don't go on my own before then, I am booked in for induction next Thursday on the 15th but am on the waiting list for induction on Monday the 12th--which is the day after my EDD.
Here's to hoping the pot was stirred enough to get things moving.

Susan, I'm voting for Monday the 12th, it's a great day for a birthday. ;):p Really, sometimes I get to share it with Mother's Day which truly is special to me. But, anywhere from the 8th through the 14th will get you that special distinction.
Good luck to all the soon-to-be moms!

Susan PC and 2Hungry--Good luck! Sounds like you are both getting close! How exciting!
I had my 20-week ultrasound last week and we are having a girl! The doctor said she looks great and healthy so we were so happy about that!
Now I am just trying to start preparing since we have done nothing up to this point. I am also trying to figure out what to do about maternity leave, going back to work, etc. It stresses me out!
Good luck to all of you soon-to-be moms...can't wait to hear about your new arrivals!

2hungry (and whoever else is trying to install a carseat 9 months pregnant) - I also had trouble with this the first time around and scheduled an inspection, but that is when I ended up having my baby...maybe it will work for you too! Also, 2hungry, I highly reccomend getting a bouncy. You can get a decent, new one for like $30 and it is well worth it.
SusanPC - I know your blood pressure is up, but try lots of walking between now and thursday. That might help get things moving. I also have heard raspberry leaf tea helps to start labor. I might start an IV of it next week, when I am 36 weeks. Just kiding. :p
Leigh - thanks for that site. I haven't looked at it that closely and was disappointed that it didn't have more gender neutral stuff...I might just need to dig deeper.
Still suffering along my 3rd trimester, but now I have severe allergies too. I think last month I posted that I was excited to finally have bought some large tshirts to get me through this pregnancy. What a joke. They are now too small and I had to buy a few ex-larges this weekend. Of course, I still wear the larges...I just look ridiculous. I finally broke down and bought some new bras though, just some nursing bras. If this is your first baby...ps...I lost a cup and a half after breastfeeding and I don't think it comes back! Of course, things have grown with the pregnancy and it is so great to finally have bras that fit again!
Melissa - I say this over and over...have you tried swimming? I don't think it will cure you, but I swam all through my first pregnancy and it always did wonders to ease the aches and pains. It has got to be better than PT, I am just not a believer in that! I wish I could swim with this pregnancy, but just don't have a child care option with a pool.

Kerri--Took your suggestion and took a walk last night. Then a nice bubble bath while DH took care of dinner. Still nothing but I did sleep better last night than I have in a while. I had heard that about rasberry tea, may have to resort to that.
Willybean--Congrats on the girl! Exciting!
Robyn--Thanks for the well wishes....I'd be happy with the 12th. Although, I would be happier if it were today :p
Leigh--Thanks for the site. I will have to check it out today.

Meredith (mst), her husband, and big sister Ilyssa welcomed baby Shayna yesterday. She was seven pounds at birth. It was a scheduled c-section, and mom and baby are doing well. That's all the details I have but I'm sure Meredith will be back with more in a few days:D

willybean -- Yay! Congrats! Have you started shopping yet?
Kerri -- Thanks for the advice on the bras. I hear you on the shirts and the allergies. I'm still here after the car seat inspection, so I guess that didn't work for me!
Susan -- I hope today is your day. Its so nice outside. It would be a good day for a baby, plus its my Dad's birthday. Did you love the NST as much as I did? That was the most relaxed I've been in months!
Thanks everyone for listening to my pity party yesterday. I think what I felt was the baby dropping the rest of the way and moving my organs around to make room. It wasn't a BH I don't think. Anyway, its stopped now and baby is way lower than before (and I can't take two steps without having to pee).

2Hungry--How exciting that you are getting even closer and that the baby has dropped significantly!
I have not started doing anything yet and need to get moving!
I was wondering if anyone has any information on breastfeeding and pumping/using bottles right from the start? I know they say to exclusively b-feed for the first few weeks but am wondering if you can breastfeed and also pump to incorporate a bottle right away too without causing confusion? I woudl love to be able to do both right from the start but am having a hard time finding information on this?

congratulations, meredith!
Congratulations Meredith and welcome baby Shayna! (Thanks for the scoop, Cangoss).
Leigh - thanks for posting that site. I bookmarked it and will go back once I actually have a room to decorate.
Count me amongst the people who would take the cast-off crib. We got tons of hand-me-downs from DB and DSIL, not a crib but a bouncer, travel bouncer, packnplay, other things whose names are escaping me right now, but also including a Graco infant seat. Since it was coming from people we know and trust, we knew it hadn't been in an accident which is the big worry in getting a secondhand carseat. We used it for DS and will use it until Baby#2 grows out of it. By that time, I think it will actually be close to the expiration date. Yes, they actually have dates on the side, I think it's something about the plastic starting to degrade but sounds to us more like trying to get parents to buy all new stuff.
Willybean - do you want to introduce the bottle right away or just pump? If the former, can I ask why? The general concern with nipple confusion is that it's easier to get milk out of a bottle nipple than a breast, so if baby gets a bottle before s/he's really figured out the breast, they could just go right for the bottle. I think we introduced a bottle with DS around 5-6 weeks, on the advice of our pediatrician. By that point (and probably well before, we never really had any latch or other issues), he was sucking well enough that NC wasn't a concern any more.
My take on nursing and/or new regular bras -- there's just no way to predict. With DS, I wore regular bras right until birth when I switched to nursing ones. The nurse at the hospital nursing shop measured me and said when my milk came in I'd go up at least another size and never go back down again. Well, I was fine in those bras the whole time I nursed, then went back to the regular ones I already had and am still wearing those at 18 weeks. (wow, I'm at 18 weeks already!) Everybody's different and until it happens, just don't buy too much. Most nursing bras are not returnable so you don't want to overbuy.
I have a question on names -- how soon are you deciding? I know with DS we had already decided on a boy's name by this point (luckily, since we weren't even close on a girl's). Although we've talked about girls' names a bunch, not for a really long time and not really in relation to this baby specifically. Just curious where others are in the process.

Congrats Meredith! I am so happy for you and your family.
Thanks Candace for letting us know.
Willybean -- At our childcare class they told us to wait until the baby gains 1 pound until you introduce a bottle or a paci. They also said it is a tossup if your child will have problems with nipple confusion or not.
lbd -- We didn't really have a deadline for names. We just kind of tossed some around until we found two that stuck!

MST--Congrats to you, your DH and Ilyssa. Here's to your back feeling better and being off bedrest!!!! Can't wait to see pictures.
2Hungry--How cool the baby dropped! I can't remember when mine did....just one day noticed there was space under my B**bs again:rolleyes:
willybean--I had the same question about pumping/bottle. Mainly b/c I would rather be able to bottle feed in public if we are out AND have my Dh do one of the night feedings. My lactation consultant recommeneded exclusively BF for the first 4 weeks or so to avoid the confusion. Now I am wondering how to fit pumping in there to start up a stock pile. Anyone have suggestions? I have to admit, I am not terribly excited about BF but I am going to try my best to do it for as long as possible.
LBD--We decided on a name (Madeline "Maddie" Grace) very early on. We didn't have a deadline, we just loved the name and once we knew it was a girl, she's been Maddie ever since.

SusanPC--I asked that question for the same reason as you, I really want DH to be able to help feed the baby and be able to bond with her. I know a number of people though that for some reason or another had to do both at the same time and right away and said it worked. I really like the idea of using a bottle with breast milk but sounds like it is frowned upon for the first few weeks if you are able to successfully b-feed.
Thanks for the feedback!

05-06-2008, 02:15 PM
SusanPC---De-lurking to say that you can stock pile breast milk in the beginning by pumping about an hour after your first feeding of the morning. I was able to set aside a few bottles doing that before we started using the bottle. At about 4 weeks, we introduced a bottle of expressed breastmilk so that DH could feed our daughter in the evening. It worked very well and gave me some much needed time alone in the evening.

Thanks for the feedback on when to pump in the beginning. So, an hour or so after a first feeding, how much can I expect to get from a pumping session? Also, for those with experience, in what increments did you freeze (2 oz, 4 oz, etc.)??????
Delanl
05-06-2008, 03:17 PM
Susan--like crt14 said I would pump after Kylie nursed in the morning or really whenever I had a few spare minutes. In the beginning I would only get 1 or 2oz., now I am getting almost 4oz. from one side. In the beginning I would combine two feedings and freeze around 3 or 4 oz. I am pressed for space in my freezer though. Good luck! It is such a wonderful bonding experience.
Also, just want to add that we introduced the bottle to Kylie around 4 weeks and she did fine with it at first. But, we weren't very consistent with it and are now having a difficult time getting her to take one (she's 12 weeks).

Here's my experience with bottles and breastfeeding with both boys-
I exclusively breastfed DS1 for his first year, and DS2 is now on track with BF'ing as well. At the hospital, I BF every 2 hours with both; after 24 hours, they both were hungry as could be and frankly inconsolable. With both, I BF for a bit, then DH fed them a bottle. We did this every 2-3 feedings, depending on how hungry the baby was. Once my milk came in, we dropped the supplemental bottles, but I have pumped a few times to make a small reserve for DH to use.
Neither of my boys had any nipple confusion at all - DS1 liked the bottle a bit more because he was overall much greedier about feeding, but once I started producing, both boys were satisfied, and very clear about preferring the breast. DS1 took a long time before he'd take a bottle from me, and I haven't pushed the issue with DS2. They also take/took bottles just fine from DH because that's all they know from him.
There's so much advice about exactly what to do with your kids, and it all varies to some degree. Bottom line, I knew my babies were hungry, and I wasn't going to make all of us miserable because of some "rule" about introducing bottles. You get to start early making your own decision from the ocean of information out there. :)

We also didn't have any nipple confusion issues, but I've had friends who waited until closer to 3 mos to intro the bottle and had problems.
I was also able to pump one to two ounces in the beginning, and eventually up to three to four. I freeze in 3-4 oz increments.

Congratulations Meredith and family!!
When Madeleine was born she wasn't much into eating. I had only pushed for 15 minutes before she was born, so they said that whatever would have normally been expressed she ended up swallowing.
The lactaion consultant at the hospital actually had me pumping and then feeding her a bottle to see if she would eat that way. I honestly can't remember what kind of nipples they were but she didn't have a problem with them and she never had a problem with latching on. I started pumping again around 3 weeks to build up a supply for when I went back to work. David would give her a bottle once in a while in preparation for her going to daycare.
Of course you could end up with a stubborn child like mine ... she would take a bottle, but if she even sensed I was anywhere around she refused to bottle and only wanted me. Nice to be wanted but I would have gladly given up a few 3 AM feedings :D

Thank you to everyone for the useful feedback. It sounds like I will just need to make my own decisions and figure out it all out when she arrives this fall. Thanks again everyone!
Hi everyone-
Quick post from the hospital. Things are going well. Shayna Abigail is adorable, and we are in love. She is going to be a handful though. They ended up putting me to sleep for the c-section, and they were so glad that they did so. I guess the surgery ended up being complicated. And, the last thing they did before the surgery was check to see how she was presenting (feet first), and by they time they cut me open, she had flipped. I guess she kept all the doctors on their toes.
Breastfeeding is going SO much better than with Ilyssa- although Shayna has jaundice also. I assume most of today will be dealing with that. My husband and I are still shocked each time she latches on- it seems to easy!:p
For those of you with c-sections, I can't even tell you how much easier it is the second time. I never would have believed it.
The other miraculous thing is that I feel so much better already. My back, my breathing- I am a whole new person.
Ilyssa seems to be enjoying Shayna so far, although dealing with Ilyssa is tough for me. I am still sore, and really want to baby the scar as long as possible so that I heal completely and quickly. But, it is hard for Ilyssa that I am not picking her up, etc.
Anyway, I am off to enjoy my cutie!

Welcome Shayna and congrats to mst and family! Glad to hear that the second c-section was better...i have heard that but was skeptical myself. we're doing a VBAC this time so hoepfully things will go as planned THIS time
Checking in at almost 38 weeks. Missed my ob appt this week so not sure about dilation, etc. but things are def. changing "down there". had a couple of "stop me in my tracks" moments the past couple of days.
Today i could only do 30 min. on the treadmill then i had to stop all together! usually, i just take a 30 second break to let a feeling pass then i'm back on, but not today. Def. getting close i think! we are headed to the Children's Museum today (world's largest is here in Indy--how lucky are we? it's so great...) which means more walking and getting up/down. I'm def. feeling large this week, but still feeling good. Had some pretty intense braxton hicks contractions in the night last night but hasn't turned into anything real yet....did i mention i think we're getting close?! :)
Happy Thursday everyone...have a great day!

Congrats Meredith and welcome Shayna! I'm glad that you are already feeling better, and I hope you heal quickly so you can pick up Ilyssa again. :)
I'm glad that bf'ing is going well - you'll find that you do get a little sore but nothing remotely like when you first did it. Perks to make up for the sleep issues!
Sweetpea, you are an ironwoman! I think it's great how active you are this late in the pregnancy. Have a great time at the museum today - it sounds like a lot of fun!

delurking again ...
If I pumped first thing in the morning after she ate I was able to get at least 6 ounces - at the beginning. I also pumped before I went to bed and tried to pump once during the day after a feeidng.
On the advice of the LC at the hospital, I started pumping about 3 weeks after she was born (I took off 8) because I wanted to be able to build a stash in the freezer. I am glad I did because once I went back to work my supply dropped. Although I had a pump in style, it still isn't the same as the baby. Madeleine started eating more and I wasn't pumping quite enough to keep up with her daycare needs on a daily basis, so I was able to pull what I had in the freezer out for her.
I filled up the whole bag when I froze milk (6 oz) then would grab 3 bags in the morning. Daycare would put in the freezer and pull out as needed. When she went to daycare she was taking 4 oz bottles that that rapidly went up to 6 oz bottles, which is where she started losing me ... ;)

Congratulations, Meredith! Hopefully we will get to see pictures of your little cutie!:D I am sure Ilyssa will just love having a little sister.
willybean - I just want to emphasize something that Nancy mentioned in one of her earlier posts. I went through a lot of stress in the beginning because DD wasn't a "textbook" baby. You need to trust your instinct more than some expert who does not know your baby. When you think it is a good time to introduce the bottle, just do it. Myself, I never got much when I pumped, maybe 3oz, but definitely did get more first thing in the morning.
sweetpea - good luck with the VBAC!!! I am still debating whether or not that is the route I want to go with this one, so looking forward to hearing of your success!

Congratulations mst!!! :D
Reading with much interest the posts on pumping and storing... I've been wondering how that works (when, how much, etc.). I'm sure I'll be consulting this thread again in the future.
I also have a question: anyone have experience, or know of someone, with ovarian torsion (twisted ovary)? Until yesterday, I had never heard of it...
I ended up in the ER yesterday morning with severe abdominal pain that lasted over 2.5 hours. It came on very suddenly and I went to my OB, who sent me on to the hospital. Unfortunately, by the time they got around to sending me to ultrasound, the pain had subsided significantly, and they weren't very proactive on getting a diagnosis. But my OB had guessed the ovarian torsion, and wanted them to get a CT or MRI on me to confirm (which didn't happen). Anyway, after it was all over, I talked to my dad (an ER doc himself) and he agreed that all the symptoms fit and it just flipped back, which is when the pain went away, and they didn't see anything on the US. But he said now that it happened once, it's more likely to occur again. Which is why I'm curious if anyone has ever experienced this. Apparently, it can require surgery, and possibly the removal of the ovary.
Oh yes, and the baby is fine. She kicked me almost the entire time, heartbeat was strong, and ultrasound showed everything was normal. My gut instinct was that there wasn't anything wrong with the pregnancy itself, and I got a little upset when the admitting nurse wanted to send me to Labor & Delivery instead. DH did great - very calm and supportive- although he said later that he was completely freaking out.
Other than that, nothing really to report since last month. I have a little baby bump now, and am really enjoying the new maternity clothes. Other than yesterday's adventure, I'm feeling great, other than some heartburn now and then. Hard to believe I'm only a few weeks of being in my 3rd trimester. Still doesn't seem real, but my friend wants me to pick the date for the baby shower.

Wow, what a scary adventure, Tholbrook! I'm glad that you and the baby are fine - no experience here with ovarian torsion though. Hopefully all is well the remaining weeks of your pregnancy, and I hope that today is much better than yesterday. :)

Hi everyone,
I have the morning off which is awesome. I am definitely appreciating time off more and more. I have some laundry in the washer, the laptop on my lap and a nice cup of (decaf) tea next to me. Bliss!
11 weeks today. I just want to get further along.... i've been nervous again this week. I'm not sure why - nothing's going on. I'm feeling fine, but I still can't help worrying something has gone wrong. And since I had a missed miscarriage last time -- that makes me worried it could happen again and I just won't know. I keep telling myself rationally that statistically we've passed the "danger" point, but it's not always easy. I have another ultrasound on the 20th (the end of first trimester one) so hopefully I'll get good news then. Have any of the women who've experienced miscarriages gone through something similar? I'd love some perspectives.
We're telling DH's family this weekend. We're going to put a sonogram picture in a Mother's Day card. I know my MIL will be thrilled. It's an old sonogram (7 weeks) which is unfortunate, but what are you going to do? It should be fun telling them - they never knew about last time so it should be quite exciting for his family.
I bought some maternity shirts from OldNavy yesterday. I'm definitely not needing them yet, but I tried to pick some that I'm hoping I can wear earlier (ie they look pretty regular shirt like) as the pulling up of my shirts at the back is driving me crazy. I also bought some big regular shirts. Working in preschools I spend a lot of time sitting on the floor (at least I am right now) and between the pants slipping down and the shirt slipping up -I'm feeling quite exposed! And soon I won't be able to use my sweater (either on or around my waist) to hide things. I also got a bella band. My pants are still fitting mostly...although the bella band feels better then the pants alone. But I'm trying to hold out on wearing it publicly until after the next ultrasound when I'll feel more comfortable going completely public.
Okay... what a novel! Congrats to MST! Susan, thanks for the info about the excedrin migraine. I'm pretty headache prone anyways and can tolerate a lot so I'll hold off for now (plus this week was better) but it's good to know I can ask about it if things get too bad.
One last question - I haven't really gained any weight yet. Maybe a pound and a half (depending on the day... it shows up and disappears). I'm sure my doctor will tell me if I need to get going gaining more when I see her on the 21st, but did anyone else find that they haven't gained much by this point - 11 weeks? Just curious.
Novel finished! :)

MST -- Thanks for checking in! I'm so glad things are going well with BF, and recovery. Can I ask why they decided to knock you out? Was your DH still able to be there? Feel free not to answer, I am just curious. Congrats!
Tholbrook -- Yikes, no I've never heard of that. Sorry I can't be of more help. I hope you are able to get some answers.
Susan -- Still here?
Sweetpea -- You go girl! That's great that you are still on the treadmill. I can barely manage the grocery store!
I had my 2nd non-stress test yesterday. The baby was fine and I was having contraction the whole time! I couldn't feel them, but I am thrilled they are there. My old infertility paranoia is coming back and I am convinced that there is something wrong with my cervix and it will never dilate, so knowing that contractions are there was nice. Today, I can even feel them a bit even though that might just be cramping from my internal. My OB was nice when I let her know my worries. She told me, one way or another, within the next three weeks she'd have the baby out!
ETA for Helios. I never had a m/c but was totally paranoid due to several years of infertility when I first got pregnant (still am -- it doesn't go away sorry to say). I liked the book "The Long Awaited Stork".
Also, I didn't start gaining weight until about 22 weeks. I called it liposuction from within because the baby was getting bigger and every thing else on me was getting thinner! Just as long as you feel you are eating enough, I wouldn't worry about it.

tholbrook--oh my goodness! i'm so glad you are okay--that sounds horrible! I've never even heard of that before!
helios--when i used to counsel prenatals (and had this same experience myself) we told them that you usually don't gain weight for the first 12 weeks. That's "standard" but not necessarily normal...some folks do gain but it's not usually baby, it's "oh i'm eating for two!" weight gain :)

Haven't heard from Susan in awhile...have we?
2hungry - I am not sure if you have ever said why you have to have all these stress tests. I know they are time consuming and not always pleasent, but it means you are almost there.
Congratulations Meredith!!
Re: pumping/breastfeeding. I don't know. I found it really stressful to try to pump and breastfeed at the beginning. I really wanted to get a stash going, but when you are the only one home with a baby and nursing every 2 hours for 40 minutes, it is really hard to find the time! I only did it at night after the "last" feeding. I always had a stash, but it was never overflowing like some people seemed to get. Of course, we moved during that first year, and I think the stress really affected my production. I really hope breastfeeding goes well this time. I just don't want to pay for formula. The price has really gone up in a year!
helios - I have never had a miscarriage, but I think it gets easier, and harder, but no, I don't think you will ever really loose that fear. Definately don't worry about not gaining weight. Plently of people LOSE a bunch of weight at first.
I had my 36 week appointment on Friday. Ok, I was really 35 weeks and 5 days. But they did my strep B test and said I was 1cm dialated and 50% effaced. The doctor didn't seem phased by that, but isn't that "moving right along"? I don't know, they probably tell everyone the same thing. He won't check again until 38 weeks, but I swear things are happening. The baby dropped a little, I think, because I am just more comfortable and pleasent to be around. I feel lots of cramping, stretching, and tightening. I had a whole list of questions to ask at my appointment that I blame on nesting. I also spent this whole morning shopping...oh my gosh, more nesting. I didn't even have a list, I just was picking up stuff I knew I needed.
Ok, that is all I can think of to say. Hopefully we will hear good news from many of you soon!

Update-- Madeline "Maddie" Grace was born at 7:10 PM on May 8, 2008. I was induced around 11AM b/c of the elevated BP and swelling (really didn't think that would happen so I had no time to stress beforehand I suppose). But, I was 3 CM and already contracting on my own. Had an epidural around 5PM and by 7PM was ready to push. 3 sets of 3 pushes (lasting 10 minutes total) each and Maddie arrived. I got very lucky and it was all easy AFTER the epidural finally took (it took several attempts).
She isn't having any trouble BF and I am amazed at how easy it has been, although my mom and aunt are here and have been helping a lot! Tonight DH and I are on our own.
We only stayed in the hospital one night (I wanted OUT of there) and came home Friday night. Her first pediatrician appt. was yesterday and the second is tomorrow. I am completely in love and in awe of my little girl.
Whoops, visitors just arrived, I will check up on everyone later.

Yay! Congrats Susan! I'm so glad everything is going well, and happy Mother's Day!
Kerri -- I had a high PAPP A (?) ratio when they did my NT scan way back at 12 weeks which led them to discover that the blood flow to my placenta wasn't what it should be. So, I had a lot of level II ultrasounds and now NSTs. Everything has been fine though, so I don't really mind too much.

Yay! Welcome Shayna and Maddie! Congratulation Mommies- how very exciting for you. I'm glad to hear things are going well on the other side. ;)
Tholbrook--I'm sorry, I haven't heard of that. Here's hoping it doesn't come back.
Helios--I wouldn't worry too much about the non-weight gain. I am one of those who lost, bw 10-15 pounds by 12 weeks. As soon as I felt like eating again the weight gain started. Now I have days where I feel like I am eating constantly! Making up for lost time, I guess. It will happen for you, and when it does it won't stop!
I was in Northern MI on Mackinac Island for a class trip this weekend. It was a blast, the kids were great and I was (thankfully!) able to keep up--walking, walking, walking, and even went on an 8 mile bike ride! Today I took about a two hour nap so it did take a bit out of me...and I don't even want to think about going back to school tomorrow already...
The whole breast feeding thing freaks me out. I don't know why. I don't think there is any way I'll be able to pump after I go back to school either...

Congrats SusanPC and welcome Maddie! I'm glad to hear that all went so well, and you're settling into motherhood so well. Just in time for Mother's Day, no less. :)
Thanks to all for the feedback about minimal first tri weightloss. Personally - I'm pleased not to have gained much (any- according to today's weighin) as I would like to gain on the low side overall as my prepregnancy weight was at the high end of my spectrum. But I am a bit concerned that I won't be able to gain as time goes on because I certainly am not being circumspect. I am doing my best to include lots of fruits and vegetables - but I am eating when hungry while making (mostly) healthy choices. But we'll see as time goes by.
We told DH's family this weekend. It was really nice. I get along very well with them (and I appreciate being lucky that way). We're quite different, but they approve of me for DH and were just over the moon. My MIL cried - she could barely speak when she saw the sonogram in the Mother's Day card. And we ended up seeing everyone because of Mother's Day festivities, and everyone was thrilled. So that was fun, and worth the wait. :)
Hope everyone has a good week.

Congratulations Susie and welcome Maddie! Your labor sounds like it went really well - hugs and best wishes to your family!
Helios, I'm sure it was wonderful having such a great response to sharing your pregnancy news with the family - happy tears all around! I wouldn't worry about your weight gain and eating - your appetite changes right along with your body. When I was about to deliver, I ate about as much as my 3 year old because I just didn't have room or feel ultra hungry - during my second trimester I felt like a food vacuum. :)

Helios--I thought I would chime in on the weight gain. I lost 17 lbs in the first 20 weeks or so. In the end, I ended up about 15 lbs from my pre preg weight (which was an all time high weight for me). I ended up having an 8lb2oz baby.....who is healthy as can be. I think gaining becomes important more in the 2nd trimester, and I agree with Nancy, your appetite changes throughout the pregnancy. I, too, could hardly eat a meal at the end I was full so easily and the h/b was bad. But, I couldn't get enough ice cream...I swear I kept Ben and Jerry's in business. As of yesterday I was 2lbs under my pre preg weight---although you'd never know it based on what the mirror is telling me....tummy definately still has a bulge. So, I think we are all just different. Your DR will tell you if they are concerned.
Mabvt--I LOVE Makinac island. Haven't been in years.
2Hungry--You are getting there. Hope you are taking it easy in these final days.
Ok--off to rest while she is sleeping. Yesterday was a LONG sleepless night.

Helios -- I think that as long as you are making healthy choices you're doing okay. Don't worry. If your doctor is anything like mine he/she will let you know if you've gained/not gained enough. Soon they'll be able to tell you if you're measuring on track and I think they go more by that than your weight gain.
Susan -- Sorry you had a rough night.
I got up this morning to a flooded downstairs due to the 3-5 inches of rain we got. I am so stressed trying to deal with that and getting all of the last minute things done at work. This is not how I expected to spend my 38th week of pregnancy. Luckily I don't think there was a lot of damage, but I am concerned about mold growing (and going into labor and coming home to a flooded house).

Yuck, I have a stuffy head cold today. Luckily, so far it has only been that--a stuffy and runny nose...
Checking in after my twenty week (!) apt. No ultrasound today, it's next week at the high risk office in town. We were referred there bc of DH's heart condition. I was amazed how loud the heart beat was today. AND it was there right away. No searching! It was high as it typically has been (girl? we're not going to find out but it is fun to guess!). So Helios, you know how I said I lost in the first tri? Welllllll, seems I've gained about ten pounds since my last appointment. I asked Dr. about it and she said she was glad I feel like eating again and it is a typical time to make a substantial weight gain. And that is also why I love my doctor. ;)
Off to find something that fits to wear to school tomorrow!

Just wanted to say congrats to Susan! I hope everything continues to go well. How do you get let out of the hospital early? It wasn't even brought up for my first delievery, but I am thinking this time I might be ready to go. The post partum rooms are really small and I don't see anyway for DH, Baby#2, and I to fit in there. Just wondering.
Now offically 36 weeks and I have been nesting like crazy. It is really insane. I mean, its good because I have gotten so much done...and I think I am stressing out my poor DH, he hasn't gotten through much on his list. I will refrain from commenting on that... :o

Thanks, Kerri. Initially my Aunt (a midwife in NC that came up for the birth) suggested we'd get more help at home and should consider asking to be discharged the next day. I was hesitant at first, but the night in the hospital wasn't so hot (labor and delivery was a wonderful exp. but the post partum care was atrocious). So, in the Am I told the nurse to tell the pedi I wanted to go home assuming he would give her the all clear. I then called my midwife who came to check on me and discharged me pending discharge of baby. The pedi was fine with us going home since Maddie was healthy, etc.--the only requirement was that I had an appt. the next day with my own pedi (so I made one asap). I was discharged once the 24 hour mark had passed.
Can't hurt to ask....it definitely wasn't offered, but I didn't have to push too hard either....

I went in for my 12 week appointment. Up until this point, we haven't done anything "fun," but today was the day we would get to hear the heartbeat. The midwife had some trouble finding it with the doppler, so she brought in the portable ultrasound.
She found the baby right away, jumping around and with a strong heartbeat. I was so relieved and jokingly said "there's only one, right?" She said "Yep, just......wait a second....I think there's another one..."
My heart skipped about 10 beats, and DH got a little pale. Yep, there's 2. Both measure right at 12 weeks, and have great heartbeats (162 and 167).
We have no twins on either side in the last few generations, and we had no interventions, so this is a HUGE surprise. Huge. Still trying to digest it, but I'll be honest, I get a huge smile every time I think about the two little ones.

2Hungry--Hang in there and don't stress too much about not being ready. My friends with kids told me this before I delivered and I didn't believe them but you really never are 100% ready and it isn't like you'll fall off the face of the earth once baby is born. I am finding plenty of time to get stuff done as Maddie sleeps a lot. I may be lucky as she is generally a wonderful little baby but really, in the grand scheme of things their needs are so basic when you first bring them home......you'll do ok.
Also, wanted to weigh in on the bouncer....We have the rainforest bouncer and it isn't too attractive, nor does it fit in with the color scheme. But, it is a lifesaver. I'll put her in it in the bathroom when I shower/dry my hair. Or, while we eat dinner....the vibrating setting puts her right to sleep usually and when it doesn't do the trick, the lights (rain) seem to keep her attn.
The other thing I can't live w/o is the boppy. Maddie and I spend hours in the chair cuddling/feeding/sleeping with the boppy.
Hope all are well....I know I should move to the new mom's board but I still love checking in on you ladies.

Things are looking up here. The disaster recovery team came out today and cut out all of the wet drywall and cleaned up the rest of the wet flooring. It is such a releif to be able to walk downstairs and not smell mold/must, even if we don't have any walls of floors in our guest rooms. Oh well, all of our after baby guests will just have to deal with it!
My DH's co-workers gave us a little shower yesterday afternoon. I can't believe how much stuff people gave us. The amount of food was amazing too. It was such a nice afternoon.

Thanks for the info on leaving the hospital Susan. We probably will wait to see what time everything starts happening and if it looks like it will work out, I will suggest it.

I had my 37 week check up today and am 2 cm dialated and a little over 50% effaced. I asked to see who would be on call for memmorial day weekend just incase ;), but I would really rather go to the lake then. Maybe end of next week...

Thought I would share a couple of photos of Maddie at 10 days old. Sorry, I haven't had a chance to post anything earlier.
Thinking about all of you who are so close.

I have a question about product safety. I have been offered an old cradle that has been in the family for years and am wondering if there is any way to find out if it is still safe to use? Does anyone know if there are places you can take things like this to have them checked?

Susan -- She is adorable! Congratualtions!
Willybean -- I have no idea. If its really old I would accept it and then use it as a place for stuffed animals to sleep or something. Do you know who made it?
Kerri -- Wow! You are almost there. The lake sounds nice though, so I hope you get to enjoy it!
I am 39 weeks pregnant! I can't believe it!

Wow, bekki! Congrats...that is wonderful news :)!
Welcome, Maddie and Shayna...love seeing the new babies!
Well, I am hanging in there at about 16 weeks. It is finally letting up on the ms front. I am definitely having more good days than bad. Problem is, I am eating constantly to avoid the nausea...this is the opposite of my other pregnancies and so I feel HUGE. Ughh...I hope it evens out eventually.
We told the girls at my ultrasound...it was so cute. We told DD1 we had to go to the doc to take pics of mommy. When we were in there, she was like, "Why do you have to take off your pants to get your pics taken?"...lol. Anyhow, we made her guess what was on the computer screen and she about freaked out, she was so thrilled. DD2 did not quite get it, but now she is always making me cover my belly with blankets so the baby does not get cold. Too funny.
Good luck to all the mommies who are almost there! Wishing you speedy labors and deliveries!

bekki--congratulations! my heart would def. skip a few beats too!
susan--she's so darling...she looks older than 10 days! so cute! i can't hardly wait!
Well, 39 weeks and change...had my ob appt this a.m. She offered to check my dilation but i said "no thanks" asi know the baby will come when it's ready despite any dilation amount, etc. had a couple of lower abdominal pains the other night and then another night before that but not really contractions like i remember with DD...and they obviously weren't as i am still pregnant! :p
went to the zoo today with dd and some friends and was really uncomfortable (as well as this a.m. on the treadmill)--just feels as though my cervix is stretching, etc. having little shoots of pain way down low and the baby is low (i have dropped 1 cm--this was the FIRST time i have measured any lower than i have all along) and was moving quite a bit. but i figure that's good...bring it on! my family is having a pool party at my sister's this weekend for my nephew's birthday and i'm sure hoping i either HAVE a baby in my arms by then or go into labor AFTER so i don't miss the fun! would be ironic if i went into labor after the party as that is what happened with DD--went to family party, left as my labor was beginning and the party was ending...DD was born 10 hours later!
take care everyone--remember to rest when you can and drink lots of fluids!! (i sound like my doula!)

erinlovesmarc, 2HUNGRY!, Kerri and sweetpea: you all sound so close! I can't even think about how excited you guys are, to be at the end of the long 40 week road. I'm wishing all the best for you :)
Luv to Cook: You're giving me hope that I'll stop throwing up at some point. Thank you, because right now, there's no end in sight. I love the stories about your little ones. I suppose getting those little quotes is why we put up with the pregnancy ;)
I had an appointment to have my Combined screen and meeting with the twin coordinator at the "high risk" doc's office. They moved my due date to 11/26, but since twins rarely stay in utero past 38 weeks, I'm thinking early to mid November is when they'll make their appearance.
Both still look good. The ultrasound was a high resolution or something so I actually saw hands and fingers and the whole thing. They put everything on a DVD, so even though DH was out of town, he'll get to see it. I thought that was a nice touch.
You ladies will appriciate this, the sonogram and exam room was like a spa treatment room. It was dimmly lit, and had those twinkling and tiny recessed lighting (like stars) in the ceiling. It was kind of cool.
They made me kind of nervous though. Apparently I need to eat A LOT. I can't eat very much right now. I've lost about 7 lbs, and they were very concerned. So, I'm supposed to eat 160-175 grams of protein (about 24-28 oz of cooked meat for example) per day. That's the best way to prevent underweight twins. So, I'm loading up on protein powder (ick) for shakes and eating loads of yogurt. I hope I can get an appetite soon.
(sorry so long, it's just nice to have people to talk to about all of this)
Bekki- Congrats on the twins- how exciting. I know a few people with twins, and they just kept forcing themselves to eat. I think that is one of the biggest differences in a twin vs. singleton pregnancy. You have to push yourself to get chubby babies!
Susan- Maddie is beautiful!
Quick note on us- we are doing great. Ilyssa *loves* Shayna, and much to my shock, breastfeeding is going great! I had no idea that it could be this easy!
Anyway, off to feed.

Bekki -- When I was told I had to gain more weight I ate nothing but cheese, peanut butter, ice cream and nacho burritos from Baja Fresh. It worked (maybe a little too well now? :D). I wanted to warn you about protein powder though. I think there are some that aren't pregnancy safe so read the fine print. Do your best and don't let them make you feel bad.
sweetpea -- You sound like me trying to pick the best day to give birth. I have narrowed it down to this Friday, next Tuesday or next Friday (the weather will be too nice to be inside this weekend, and I want to see the Lost finale!). Good luck!
Luv to Cook -- That is a great story. I love that your DD is so excited.
I have a cute story about my DH. He refuses to carry a cell phone, but as the big day approaches he's getting more and more worried that he will be unavailable should I go into labor. So, last night he had to go to some awards ceremony for work. Since I was just going to work and coming home I told him to take my cell. Well, he left it on his desk and then panicked when he got to the event thinking that I was going to go into labor, drive myself to the hospital, and have the baby all in the span of the two hours he was going to be unreachable. So, he borrowed his coworker's cell and called our house every 5 minutes for an hour. As luck would have it, I was stuck on the metro and then stuck in traffic and it took me 2 hours to get home last night. I got home and ran to the bathroom of course, and then just as I was coming out to check the messages he came flying into the house. He apparently caused a scene and told everyone I must be in labor and left the awards ceremony early he was so worried! The poor thing was so wiped out from the ordeal I had to make him oatmeal and tea and then send him to bed! I hope he makes it through actual labor! Can they give DHs an epidural?
Bekki - ditto on just do the best you can. Eventually you'll get your appetite back. I've never been told I need to gain more weight but I can back up 2Hungry on how effective nacho burritos (or really nacho cheese in any form!) can be.
I have a mild concern that I'm hoping y'all can help me lay to rest. I was 20 weeks yesterday and have still not felt this baby kick. DS kicked at 20 weeks 5 days and I thought most people could feel later babies as much as a few weeks earlier. We've had ultrasounds and she was moving around a bunch so I know she can do it, I just haven't felt it yet. A few times I've thought I felt her shifting but to be completely honest I think that's wishful thinking. Anyone else have late kicking babies?

lbd - delurking a sec; I felt DS2 at night much more than I ever did in the day - he was active during the day, but unless it was crazy movement, I was too busy with my older son to really notice every movement with the baby. Hopefully you feel your baby soon, but my guess is that you have enough going on in the day that you don't really focus on what every blip and gurgle you feel is.
Ah yes, Susie, your daughter is beautiful!!
Off to feed David...

Um, WTF? I just got an email from DH's cousin saying that they would see me in a few days for the birth of the baby. First I've heard of it! I'm SURE DH would have told me about this and I would have remembered if we knew. I hope they enjoy sleeping on the floor in our moldy basement!

I am feeling so much better. I was really worried but at the ultrasound/NT scan yesterday the baby had a nice strong heartbeat and had progressed to 12 weeks. Now, the scan wasn't the best experience. The tech (who was visibly pregnant herself) rushed it, never showed me the screen, handed us two printout pictures and the whole thing was done in less then 7 minutes. Which kind of bothered me as WE were on time for our 1 o'clock appt. Just because they didn't take us until 1:30 wasn't our fault....
But my doctor did a quickie ultrasound today after we couldn't hear the heartbeat externally and it was great! The baby was springing around like it was jumping on a trampoline. Big vertical jumps... so cool to see movement.
I'm still plagued by headaches, but I'm getting used to it. My doctor recommended having a little caffeine to help with them.... I tried a regular cup of tea instead of decaf this afternoon. It helped for a while but now it's coming back. :(
Lorien - have you received confirmation it is a girl? I saw your use of she in your post and was wondering.
2Hungry, Kerri and all the other close ones - good luck! Hope all goes well.
Bekki - wow! I kind of think twins would be cool, but that said I'm just happy to have this baby on the way. :) Good luck gaining weight!
Susan - Great pictures. What a doll! I so want a girl. A boy will be fine, but I want a girl desperately (both DH and I come from boy heavy families) and it would be nice to have a girl first and know I've got one. :)
Oops! I thought I'd posted that we're having a girl but in all the hullaballo I might have forgotten. I still haven't told many friends or extended family I'm PG because I've never gotten around to taking the "cute" DS picture I have in mind to send out in an email. But yes! we had our major ultrasound on May 9th and found out we're having a girl. It was pretty clear; I always thought girls were id'd by the absence of a p**** but she showed us how girls have 3 white lines that are positive indicators. So yea!! I had a brief period of thinking I knew better what to do with another boy (plus I have all the clothes already! ;)) but have quickly adjusted and are quite happy. Plus, she seemed to be totally healthy and active (my earlier post notwithstanding).
Heather, glad you're feeling better.
2HUNGRY - so cousins are not only coming uninvited but they're staying with you? Wow. I would be most unhappy. When DS was born, no family lived closer than a 7 hour drive and we told them we wanted 48 post-hospital hours on our own before anyone visited. It was almost respected -- the in-laws flew in after about 24 hours and came first thing in the morning. Not sure what we're going to do this time, since we're now living close to my side of the family and my folks will be taking care of DS including bringing him to the hospital. We can't really tell the in-laws they can't come but my side can. Hhmmm.

lbd -- Have you tried drinking some juice and laying on your side for a while (I know, easier said than done with a little one at home).
Helios -- I'm glad your NT scan went well. Sorry the tech was a butt.
I had an interesting day yesterday. I went in for my NST at the peri and my blood pressure was up 146/92. Yikes! The peri called my doc and they decided to do a c-section right away (since I am 39 w 2 d they though this was best). So I called DH, got him to rush to the hospital with the bags, called my mom etc etc. They wheeled me up to L&D, and after I registered they hooked me up to the monitors and took about 5 vials of blood. I was told to expect a c-section within an hour...except my blood pressure went down to normal and my labs were all fine. I did have swelling but no worse than what I have been having for weeks now. So, I was sent home on complete bed rest and told to do a 24 hour urine collection. They expect I am on the verge of developing pre-eclemsia (sp?). I am a little frustrated and feeling like they're just waiting for something bad to happen, but we'll see what happens today. I have to go back at 11 this morning for a blood pressure check, and to turn over my big jug of urine! This baby likes to keep things interesting!

2Hungry--Just wanted to share this was my exact same experience. On Monday of the week I delivered (39w2d) I had high bp at the DR. They took it three times, two it was really elevated and on the third try (after they had me lay down for a while) it was under control. I was sent home after a NST and told to come back on Thursday. On Thursday it was up again, and I was promptly sent to labor and delivery to be induced. I think the cuttoff for pre eclempsia is around 140/90 and another symptom is that you are spilling protein in your urine (which I was on Thursday but only a trace on Monday--and both times my bp was around 138/90 or so). So, I was induced at 39w4d. My midwife's rationale was why wait for things to go south over the weekend. Apparently they drugs (magnesium?) they need to use to get pre e under control are pretty nasty so she wanted to head it off before I developed it. I was also extremely swollen. The rest is history and in retrospect I am so glad I was induced (although I was REALLY upset about it that day as I wanted to go into labor on my own.)
In any case, take care of yourself and good luck at the appt. today. Take that hospital bag with you. Thinking of you!!!!

Wow, 2 Hungry! Good luck. Maybe your blood pressure is high because you are ready to have this baby, so when it looked like you were, it went back down! I am not in favor of routine c sections or inductions, but I can't really see the benefit of having you all ready to go only to call it off. It does look like it will be soon. YAY!!
Lorien - congrats on the girl!
I had a lot of cramping and backache wednesday night. I was convinced that something was going to happen soon. I guess I was wrong. I still have some cramping, but it isn't bad. It is probably good because we still aren't ready. Finally got baby bedding yesterday, and husband is still "putting the room together".

Dress help... please!
I'm in a wedding July 5th at which point I will be 19 weeks. There are two attendants - me and another woman. The bride is totally flexible, letting us pick our dresses within the shades of blue (not navy) and green (not hunter). All well and good, except I'm in the fat stage where I'm busting out of my jeans and just not able to wrap around where I'll be in 6 weeks, let alone try on dresses etc. I can't decide if I will look ridiculous in a maternity at 19 weeks BUT I'm going to another wedding 3 weeks later, and then ANOTHER labor day weekend. I would love to get use out of the same dress to all three... if possible. But if it's not possible for all 3, then at least the first two.
I was looking at this dress. (http://www.apeainthepod.com/Product.asp?category_Name=Cocktail+Dresses&category_Id=4615&product_Id=5256A4615&MasterCategory_Id=19). It is maternity, but I'm wondering if because it has the sash, perhaps I can get away with it while still smaller (in early July) but also later as I expand. The color is also perfect.
I've also looked at some JCrew dresses. I emailed the "wedding specialists" and they recommend this dress (http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod86686161)in the largest size so it will fit in the bust and I'll have it tailored in beneath. But I think that MAY work for the first wedding, but not the second two which makes it very expensive!
I like this empire waisted one (http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod88429161) better, and feel like I will at least get the two weddings out of it, if not #3.
Thoughts? Other resources? Help! Time is ticking and I have got to figure this out soon. :)

Checking in to say that....
Tyler was born at 9:53AM Monday @ 7 pounds 14 ounces and 20 inches long...:D
Everything went very well and I feel great...I had a c-section though so right now we're all camped out in the living room since I'm not allowed to go up and down stairs for the next few weeks...Tyler is doing great too...he lost 1 pound since he was born but they say that he will regain it back soon...he had a tiny operation this week because they had to cut the membrane under his tongue because it was too short and he wasn't able to feed properly but now he's eating up a storm! He's even sleeping 4-5 hours straight during the night which makes things easier...

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
He's precious! I'm glad you're both doing well! And wow, 4-5 hours - I can only hope I get that lucky!
Congratulations Erin! Hope you recover quickly and are able to get out of your living room. ;)
Heather, I think the first is probably most flexible and would be fine at 19 weeks when you're showing but not too much (the color is great!). The third is cute and would work well but I'd be afraid it would be much too short when you got to the third wedding in September. Buying the second in a larger than needed size then tailoring sounds like a hassle to me - would you let it out again later in the summer? If it were me, I'd definitely want to go with whatever I'd get the most wear out of. It's sort of a double whammy where a bridesmaid dress you often can't wear again anyway and maternity clothes have a limited timeframe.
I think posting about babygirl not kicking may have spurred her a little. Still not a lot but I have had 2 occasions now where I'm feeling what I am pretty sure were actual kicks -- sure enough to put in my pg journal so there you go.
We have a signed agreement on a house (!!!!) so as long as the inspection goes well, we might be in our own place by mid-July. Yay!!! Plenty of time to get stuff organized before the wee one arrives.
Kerri
05-25-2008, 06:25 PM
Heather - I would also go with the maternity one. You can order it in your normal size and it should fit ok, even if you aren't showing all that much. At 19 weeks, I just think it is too close for comfort to buy a non-maternity dress. Since it has that sash, that will prevent the dress from looking ridiculously huge.
Congrats Erin - What a beautiful boy! You know, I have hear about a lot of people who thought they would need that surgery, but you are the first one I have heard that actually needed it. So glad it helped!
2Hungry - how are you doing?
Lorien - congrats on the house! I know that is a huge relief to get that done.
I'll be 38 weeks tomorrow. I sure am tired of people telling me I shouldn't do stuff. What are they afraid of? That I'll go into labor? That is the whole point!

Helios7--I am in a wedding this weekend and am about 25 weeks. We are all wearing J Crew bridesmaid dresses and I was able to go just one size up from my reguar size and it really worked out. It is empire waisted and all I had to do was get hemmed so is even all around. The material of this dress though is more flowy so might be easier than some of the ones you had looked at. I am pretty big at 25 weeks too and the one size up really worked so that all I needed to do was the hemming. Not sure of that helps or not!

Congratulations Erin! so sweet...i'm insanely jealous :)
Still prego...my due date has passed me by but i'm still doing fine--not miserable. just ready! i was very weepy on saturday mainly b/c I am tired of being around DD all day, every day and when DH is home on the weekends I just assume she'll hang out with him...but she still calls "mom" when she needs something/wants something/etc. i just want to SIT! :) no more playing farm animals! or if i am working on gardening or something then i want to do that uninterrupted...ah. the joys of a 3-y-old. DH did take her to run errands on Saturday and gave me some uninterrupted time to work on projects. I mowed the grass with the walk-behind mower yesterday and still nothing happening!
DD was 8 days late so i see that in our future again though i'm praying hard it happens sooner rather than later...had my OB appt this a.m. and let her check my cervix and i'm 4 cms dilated. she offered to strip my membranes and i said "no thanks!" maybe next week if i'm really miserable...
time to go take a nap before it's time to clean the walls in the baby's room (my hubby laid new hardwoods and managed to get them sanded and 3 coats of finish on this weekend! yay! now i must wash all the dust off the walls from cutting the hardwoods and sanding). i can't wait to get the trim in (tonight!) and get the baby's stuff moved OUT of my laundry room already! :)

Oh Sweetpea - I had convinced myself that you and 2hungry had your babies this weekend. So sorry to hear I was wrong about you. Although, it is funny to hear that you are still working on the baby's room. I thought I was bad because I just bought crib bedding last week.
I had my 38 week appointment today. I haven't made any progress (still 2cm dialated, 50% effaced). I brought muffins for the office and told the doctor he couldn't have any with news like that. A wierd thing, well, I think it is wierd. This practice is different from where I delivered my first baby, and apparently if you have a "favorable cervix" they will go ahead and induce you at 39 weeks. Since mine is already favorable, they went ahead and offered this to me. I don't know how I feel about that. It was really important to me with my first baby to go into labor naturally, and that ended up being overrated because I was in labor for 24 hours. I am considering this for convience sake with a 21 month old, plus, well, I know you all understand...some family decided to come in, etc, etc, etc. But really, routine inductions before 40 weeks with no medical reason? The only thing I can come up with is that the doctors on call don't like to be bothered at night or on weekends. DH and I talked, and right now, we are definately going to wait, see what happens at the appointment next week, and see how I feel. We are inclined to wait it out until at least 40 weeks at this point. Anyone else have a practice that does this?

Willybean - I'd be interested in seeing which dress worked so well for you. Unfortunately my issue is ... ahem... chest size. I'm pushing the envelope as it is.... My actual size would be a bit bigger then I would like anyways these days, but the chest issue is the primary concern. If i fit my chest, I'm stuck with a big ol' dress. But I'm still interested in seeing which of of the options worked well for you... maybe I missed one. Can you post a link?
Thanks.

Helios7--The dress I am wearing is no longer available but seems similar to this one: http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod62983161
The chest was my biggest problem and the one size up in the dress seemed to accomodate my 2 sizes bigger chest (I am normally fairly small-chested though)! I literally could not zip the dress in my regular size. I did not have a choice in the dress but it just happened to work out. I would think if you ordered 1-2 sizes bigger you would be able to wear most of them after tailoring.

Hey pregnant ladies and new mommies too. What cute little munchkins!
I am NOT joining this thread, I'm just poping in for a little friendly, unsolicited advice. Here goes:
Do NOT be seduced by the oh-so-cute covers on the Britax carseats. (I was) or the touted safety (they don't fare any better than a Graco in consumer reports tests) because they are a real PITA! I just struggled with mine for 30 minutes to get the cover off; you must completely take it out of the car and disengage the straps. The graco triumph that we also have is so much easier to wash and deal with in general. These things matter when you are cleaning vomit off a carseat cover for the second time in two days.
now back to your regularly scheduled happiness.

Anyone else have a practice that does this?
delurking ...
My best friend from college has 2 kids and she never went into labor on her own. She was given the option to pick a date in a 10-day time frame in which to be induced. She was told it was to help with scheduling of the hospital rooms and the doctors. Something just not right about it. My practice wouldn't talk about induction if all was well until 41 weeks and they wouldn't let you got past 41.5.

Ryan is here! As you may have guessed, I never returned from my appointment on Friday. My BP kept going up and up (almost to the point where they wouldn't even talk about the option of inducing me) but then it finally got itself under control. The induction failed though, and after about 30 hours he began to show distress and we went through with the c-section. The labor part was tough because I had to lay on my right side THE WHOLE TIME!!! Ouch. The c-section was weird -- it felt like one of those alien abduction shows.
Anyway, he was born on 5/24 weighing 7 lbs 8 oz and was 20 inches long. He was jaundiced so they kept a bit of an extra eye on him, but he's doing just great.
Congrats Erin!!
PS At my hospital they force you to keep one light on all night. Since hospial rooms aren't exactly known for their mood lighting, this was tough. I sent my DH home for a nightlight and it was awesome! So, if you go on a hospital tour ask if they have that rule and if they do bring a nightlight.
PPS I was in for 5 days so I wore gowns for the first three and my own clothes for the last two. I rocked the mesh panties the whole 5 days though!

Congrats 2HUNGRY!!!! 30 hours of labor then a c-section sounds like an ordeal but you sound like you're doing fabulously. So happy for you! (and May 24th is a great birthday -- DS's) Good tip on the nightlights. Wonder what that's all about?
So I'm thinking of skipping a refresher childbirth class. We did a 6 week Lamaze class last time and it's hard to say how helpful it was. At one point when I was doing the breathing we practiced in class, the OB nurse came in and said I was hyperventilating. No wonder my hands were all tingly! I've still got my books, so I'm wondering how much I'm really going to get out of it. Anyone either mad or glad that they skipped or took a refresher?
Oh, had a checkup this morning. Nothing out of the ordinary. My weight gain was 3 pounds from last time and she said it's on track. I was concerned since I eat pretty healthy but haven't exactly been limiting myself, was afraid there would be some restrictions put in. I do have to do an early glucose test since I had gestational diabetes with DS but I'm not to worried. If it comes back positive again, it will be a PITA but we'll deal. So nice to hear that little heartbeat again, even if she did keep moving away from the wand. :p
PS In case anyone else is thinking of stopping their extra folic acid after the first trimester (my bottle's almost empty so I asked if I had to replace) -- if there's a family history of neural tube defects, best to take it all the way through pregnancy.

Congratulations 2Hungry and welcome Ryan!! I bet you are so glad to be out of the hospital - I absolutely hated the hospital stay post-partum.
Lorien, I didn't take a refresher course at all, and I definitely did not feel the lack of one while in labor. I just re-read my books to refresh myself on all the possibilities.

welcome baby Ryan and congrats 2hungry! i too love the name Ryan but it's my brother's name so that's out! I considered Roan... we still haven't decided on a boys name! eeks! if it's a girl it'll be Lauren Rae and boys well....we like Benjamin Philip, Samuel Philip, Dixon Jude (my mother's maiden name is Dixon and my MIL is Judy) or Jack Philip. i think it'll probably be Jack...my dad's grandfather was Philip---i have a strong need to include old family names as middle names! anyway....
still pregnant--sunday will be 41 weeks. i am DONE going out--people are either total gawkers or say rude things. It doesn't help that overall my body is in shape, etc. i just look like i have swallowed a basketball so it's much more obvious/large looking. i swear if one more person says "you're huge!" i'll smack them. you think i don't know that? think i don't roll over at night and think, crap, i'm huge!? sheesh. vent over...thanks for listening ladies!
