I have never watched Terms of Endearment. I realize that revokes my girl card.

and I see a lot of movies!!!
Hmmm maybe I should set a goal and work my way through that list :D
I did watch A Trip to the Moon(1902!!) on you tube a few months ago. Loved it! It got me on a silent movie kick.
You can watch it HERE (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aI0BmQaIIR4).

Titanic. Not sure that I ever will, even though those that love it say that I'm missing out big time. I think the more a movie is hyped, the more I want to stay away.

Same here, for the same reason. I just have no desire to see it.

I agree. A guy I dated always wanted me to watch it. My answer was always, "But I know how it ends!"
I've not seen any of the movies listed, but then I'm not a movie person. Actually, I may have seen Love Story after I read the book.

Hmmm, that's a really long list, and I haven't even heard of 3/4 of them . I think I'll have to die unfulfilled :p.
I haven't seen Titanic or Gone With the Wind either, nor have I ever seen The Princess Bride. Talk about getting your girl card revoked (and no, I haven't even seen Terms of Endearment)!

I've never seen "Office Space." This is usually a fact I keep to myself--since most give me looks of utter horror when they find this out!

Guess it's what one defines as "must see" -- If it's a mediocre overhyped piece of pap, I have missed quite a few. Princess Bride I have happily avoided and I have seen Titanic in bits and pieces -- rooting for both of them to die more quickly and put me out of my misery.
However, some of the films mentioned are major artistic achievements (3 of which are generally considered among the top films EVER made). By denominating them as "must see", it makes it sound as though watching them is something of a chore or giving in to misguided popular opinion rather than a wonderful experience -- my life would definitely be a little poorer if I had never seen them.

In my defense, I do have The Godfather on my DVR, just waiting to be watched - maybe this week, while DH is away....

I have never seen any of the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or the last 3 Star Wars movies. I also have not seen Terms of Endermeant either!
I would say I have missed the majority of "must see" movies of the last 10 or 20 years. :D
LOVED Casablance and would recomend it - DH and I rented it about a year ago. And GWTW is my all time favorite movie & book! I have seen it so many times I can't count them all. I even got to see it in the theaters about 10 or 12 years ago when it was rerelased.

Must you always enter a thread and throw cold water?? Good lord. Are you this much fun in real life too?
Sandy, you're not missing much. Titanic was terrible.

...but I've avoided seeing these:
Schindler's List
Godfather movies
Jaws
Forrest Gump
Lord of the Rings
Titanic (in its entirety - saw a bit of it)
Sophie's Choice
I have seen the Star Wars series (like the old ones over the new ones).
I do like uplifting ones, so someone else's Sound of Music dislike is balanced with my adoration of that movie!:D I enjoy great musicals, sap that I am...:p Mostly because they are fun to sing along to, and safe for kids to watch with me..and there's the nostalgia factor for our high school musical days when it seemed like the whole school was singing those songs - or mutations of the lyrics...
The first really sad movies I remember seeing were Ordinary People, Beaches, and Terms of Endearment. I wouldn't see any of those again. I would watch the first half of Steel Magnolias, but not the second half!
Give me a romantic comedy and I will be happy! :)

What a surprise -- my fan club.:D I am flattered you spend such a great amount of time seeking my posts and then posting something that attempts to be demeaning.
You are quite a piece of work -- I would suggest your expending some mental energy and try to figure out why an anonymous person on the internet has become such a source of intrigue in terms of your continuing compulsion to "attempt" to insult me. As I have posted before, I would suggest you put your money where your mouth lies metaphorically and reference a post in which I have singled out a person to insult in the manner in which you continually "attempt" with me.
I write "attempt" because I find you ridiculous and aside from responding to anything you post which specifically attempts to insult me, I give you not a nanosecond of thought.:D

Except, Blaze, you responded to her thread so apparently you have some interest in what she has to say.
And I tend to agree, why do you need to go insulting people who call something a "must see" movie? And why does everyone need to be interested in your type of art? I'm guessing you wouldn't much be interested in some of the movies I call art. The ones I stand in line for each and every year so that I get decent seats and come away from inspired to be better, do better, work harder. That's why it's art, it's a personal preference.

I am not clear how my response INSULTED the original poster in the same way as she sought to insult me.
Frankly I wasn't aware WHO started the thread until you pointed it out. The analogy would more accurately be if I had quoted her initial post with a post that essentially said the point of the thread was idiotic and she was stupid for even thinking of the idea -- which I didn't -- just stated that I differentiated between two kinds of "must see" films and had no qualms about missing certain ephemeral "must see" films -- some I see and some I don't depending on circumstances and genre -- not likely to see any of the cartoon films because I find them boring -- conversely a 15 year old boy would be unlikely to want to subject HIS eyeballs to my guilty pleasures.
As to your specific question -- MY TYPE OF ART? I hardly think that Godfather, Gone With The Wind or Casablanca are obscure art house films enjoyed only by a small number of pretentious intelligentsia. Schindler's List is in a category all its own.
My point is that there are trivial "must see" movies that are "must see" because of momentary ad campaigns -- shrug.
However, there are movies that are so universally acknowledged "sublime" and important achievements, that someone who hasn't seen is missing out on something that has nothing to do with "hype"
My life would be a little "poorer" if I had not seen certain films just as it would be poorer if I hadn't heard certain music or read certain books -- quite a difference between Jane Austen/F Scott Fitzgerald or James Patterson or the latest transitory best seller that goes in one eye and out the other.

Movies, much like books or art or music, are really an individual taste. So while I LOVE The Princess Bride and Office Space, I really don't mind that you guys haven't seen them as long as you don't mind that I cannot for the life of me get through any of those horrendous Star Wars movies ;) And Titanic is by far the worst movie I ever sat through. Well wait. I lied. Eyes Wide Shut is the worst.

Regarding the OP, it's not exactly a "must-see" movie, but with all the buzz right after Charlton Heston died, I did feel like the only person who has never seen Ben Hur. :D From what I've heard, it's no great loss. ;)
(KristiB, I don't want to hijack but I'm curious about what silent movies you've seen--?)

Okay, this probably really isn't "must see", but....I have never seen Napoleon Dynamite, which I have been told is simply unheard of. It's not that I don't want to see it, I just haven't got around to it yet. I have seen just about all the other movies metioned, except for the newer (last 3) Star Wars movies.
And TK, you are not the only one to have not seen Ben Hur :D

Titanic [/I]is by far the worst movie I ever sat through. Well wait. I lied. Eyes Wide Shut is the worst.
How true!!.
I never saw Citizen Kane, Casablanca, or Sound of Music. Musicals in general are not enjoyable to me so I avoid them in general. I've started Schindlers List a couple times but never got thru it for differing reasons, not that I disliked it but something always interrupts. I will try again one day.
I've seen parts of the last 3 Star Wars movies & there's no reason to lose sleep over them. the first three were fun but after that, yech. DH likes SciFi stuff but even he could not get thru the Matrix series. started out OK and then felt like it was expanded to fill space.
Ben Hur... my father thought it was a "wonderful" movie so we went to see it. It was the era of big biblical epics and I remember on the big screen ( compared to a 12 inch BW TV at home) the chariot race was incredible. Probably isn't that outstanding anymore considering how special effects have so much more spectacular, but for the time it was quite an accomplishment.

I hated Terms of Endearment.
I've never seen:
Rocky Horror Picture Show I think it came out while I was in college, in a one movie theater town that didn't show it. Then from what I heard about all of the traditions, I was too intimidated. I didn't want to be the one throwing toast at the wrong time. :o
Princess Bride- at least the whole thing. I always doze off during some part of it.
The Matrix

LMAO, have you followed the years-old controversy on this board about that movie?? It's been pretty divisive. ;) If you do a quick search, you'll find a few threads where it's popped up. Clearly people were either in the love-it or hate-it camp. From what I recall, the love-it camp was pretty small. :D
BTW, I'm not sure what you consider a "must see" movie either, as some of the movies mentioned here are so not in the same "league" as others. But, FWIW, I haven't seen most of the movies mentioned on this thread, including:
Gone with the Wind
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Love Story
The Godfather
Terms of Endearment
Schindler's List
any of The Star Wars movies
Rocky Horror Picture Show
I *have* seen Titanic. :p

I don't know what makes a movie a "must see", but people are often surprised that I've never seen:
Braveheart
Goodfellas
Dr. Strangelove
Sunset Blvd.
Citizen Kane
any Monty Python movie
Chinatown
Raging Bull
Hotel Rwanda
I'm sure I'll see some of the less gory or depressing ones one of these days. Maybe.
