In the news today:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton quickly apologized Friday after citing the June 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in defending her decision to keep running for the Democratic presidential nomination despite increasingly long odds.

"I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever," the former first lady said.

The episode occurred as Clinton campaigned in advance of the June 3 South Dakota primary.

Responding to a question from the Sioux Falls Argus Leader editorial board about calls for her to drop out of the race, she said: "My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. You know I just, I don't understand it," she said, dismissing the idea of abandoning the race.

Clinton said she didn't understand why, given this history, some Democrats were calling for her to quit.

Her remark about an assassination during a primary campaign drew a quick response from aides to Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama.

"Senator Clinton's statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said the senator was only referring to her husband and Kennedy "as historical examples of the nominating process going well into the summer and any reading into it beyond that would be inaccurate and outrageous."

She has said much the same thing before. In a March interview with Time magazine, she said: "Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June, also in California. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual."

Within a couple hours of the South Dakota remarks drawing attention, Clinton decided to make a personal apology.

"I was discussing the Democratic primary history and in the course of that discussion mentioned the campaigns of both my husband and Senator (Robert) Kennedy waged in California in June in 1992 and 1968 and I was referencing those to make the point that we have had nomination primary contests that go into June. That's a historic fact," she said.

"The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy," she added, referring to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's recent diagnosis of a brain tumor. "I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever.

"My view is that we have to look to the past to our leaders who have inspired us, give us a lot

Good job, Hillary. Way to communicate. Bill must be tearing his hair out.

Being as Bobby Kennedy Jr. hasn't taken issue and spoken on her behalf, being as the Obama campaign has disavowed their initial reaction, and being as this one, that one, and the other one have all done likewise, I think, at this point, the Hillary haters should bury your hatchets or turn them elsewhere. The morning media has already dubbed it a non-story.

Bob, are we watching the same news? ABC just dedicated a 4 minute segment to it.

It's not that I hate her, it's just that she's so ridiculous sometimes that I can't help but giggle. And I'm up early after very little sleep and a bit punchy. :) I just found it funny that she spends so much time cleaning up her own verbal vomit.

No offense to the Hillary lovers.:)

I'm no Hillary lover, but I didn't take her comment the way the media and some of you are taking it. I thought she was putting herself in the lofty company of the Kennedys, not recommending that Obama be assassinated or to rub the Kennedys' nose in their own troubles. I do agree that between Bill's meddling and ill-thought-out comments and her own foot in mouth problems, that she is hurting her campaign. I know there must have been times when she wanted to throttle her husband and tell him to shut up and stay out of the way!

I'm glad I don't have to be so careful of what I say. The worst that can happen is that someone on the CLBB points out my errors!;)

Yes, well, it's going to be covered as it did happen, and there was an initial flap; I should have called it a "non-issue," rather than a "non-story."

And who are you kidding about you and the Clintons, Deb? You've floated that stale signature line around for months now which I find particularly funny, since the quote is from a man who spent 50 million dollars to win something like 10 electoral votes.

"Very little sleep and a bit punchy"? I wonder what would be coming out of your mouth after a tremendously wearying year of campaigning?

Oh dear, Bob. I'd forgotten about my siggy line. I put it there because I thought it was funny, not because I was a Romney supporter. Heck, I'm not even a registered republican!

Dude! I'm not looking to argue with you. I was having a giggle, nothing more.

Off to the farmers market, the first of the year! Much more appealing than politics, no? :)

Enjoy the day and the holiday weekend!

Well, lucky you. The only thing at our farmer's market is rhubarb, asparagus, and crocheted dishrags.

Which is why I chose to sleep in this morning rather than drag myself out of bed to be there at 8:00. :)

Actually, our FM does have plants, local meats and such, but none of it was enough to drag my weary bones out bed.

I think a special occasion like that DEFINITELY calls for Boone's Farm. Specificially, Strawberry Hill. Served straight out the bottle, no glasses.

*snort* ETA...Wiki has a "see also" section for Boone's Farm. The catagory? "Low-end fortified wine". :p

If you're measuring candidates by their ability to stick their foot in their mouth then anyone capable of doing so will only be following our current leader's stellar example (just MHO--).

Debbie

BTW, I'd much rather see Bill back in the White House with absolutely nothing to do than another 4 or, Heaven forbid, 8 years of current leadership!

GOOD ONE! (As I proceed to clean the coffee off my screen...) Thanks for the laugh!

Joyce

I don't think she meant it as the media does, she was talking about the decision going into June and the media has chosen to blow it out of proportion.

Did anyone see McCain on SNL last week? Democrats, I urge youto take your time.....why I think conventions are fun...wouldn't it be really fun if you came out of the convention and still didn't have a candidate? I'll go you one better and even support you on this one....why not put both of them on the ballot? And while you are thinking about it....that john Edwards....you might want to kick his tires one more time...(paraphrased, but it was so cute)...you might want to try to find it on youtube.
by the Way! Happy Memorial Day, ALL!

personally, I dislike her, but have an absolutely impossible time trying to put a sinister spin on her comments. Frankly I'm surprised that GMA actually devoted about 5 minutes to the whole thing AGAIN today. I took it to mean that they've put their support behind Obama and are trying to force her out. Otherwise, why bother?

That said, from a strategic standpoint, I say stay in as long as you like, Hillary. The longer they focus on each other, the less time they have to dedicate to a national campaign. I'm surprised the party hasn't pushed her harder, unless, and I'll admit I know next to nothing about the Democratic party's current strategy--they really think that this election cycle will be a no-brainer...though history, recent history has shown this to not always work out so well.
