Has anyone used or have an opinion on heart rate monitors? Do they work? Are they worth the expense? Does anyone prefer one brand/type over others? I saw an ad in Runner's World for one (the Polar brand -- www.polarusa.com) and started doing some research. They sound pretty neat, but they're pretty expensive. What do you think?

If you're the type of person who loves gagets and feedback, then a HRm is for you. If you own and actually use a palm pilot, then chances are you'll actually use your HRM. If you know how to use every feature on your VCR, DVD or DC player...well, you get my meaning.
I've used one on occassion and find that they're pretty uncomfortable. I'm only exercising for fitness and don't really need that level of feedback. If you're training for a marthon or other big event, the feedback can be helpful.
Target sells a very basic heart rate monitor. You may want to give that a try before investing big bucks.

My DH uses one every day and loves it. It was a gift from his daughter and the brand is Polar. I believe you can check out their products at www.polar.com. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll pull the information for you. They have many styles and features to choose from. The one my husband uses involves wearing the elastic band with the transmitter around the chest, that sends the signal to the wrist receiver that looks like a watch. The lower priced styles are pretty easy to use and program. It seems very accurate and reliable, and some of the models will store your information about duration in your target zone, calories burned, etc. in a file in the receiver.

They also make monitors for women that are part of a sports bra. So, instead of wearing a separate device, it's woven into the lower band on the job bra. I've never tried one, but have been wondering whether or not it would be a good thing to have. I think it would help me push myself more, and improve my speed.
Keep us posted on any reviews if you try it!

I have a polar and really like it. I don't remember which model it is, but it was around $150. I know they offer cheaper models, if you just want something basic. After I used it for a few weeks, I got to the point where I could tell my HR without looking. It's helpful in learning what your limits are and what's a good pace for you. Now that I'm pregnant, I'm using it again, b/c I'm having trouble knowing when to ease up. So, I do think it's a useful thing to have. I didn't find it uncomfortable, it was just something new to get used to. Good luck finding one for you.
