View Full Version : Does anyone own/use a rowing machine?

My gym got rid of the only ancient rowing machine they had (I may have been the only one who used it) a while ago and I still miss it. I am considering getting one for home, but haven't a clue about them. Obviously want the most for my $$$ and don't need a professional one by any means.
Anyone own one or have any advice for me?
TIA,
Kate
We have a Horizon Fitness "Oxford". It is similar to this one (http://mums2bkitbags.com/rowing-machines/horizon-oxford-II-cs.html)
Ours is several years old. It works fine, but we rarely use it. I wish I had bought an elliptical instead. Just personal preference. Recently we joined a gym so the rower gets even less of a workout. (Side note -- my son "says" he's going to use it but I have yet to see his lazy buns on it. LOL)
Since you already know you like to row, one similar to this would probably work for you.
What I would check --
1. Can you find repair service in your area if you should need it. The company where we bought ours locally went out of business. I'm not sure I'll be able to get repairs if I ever need them.
2. Try whichever you choose prior to buying. You want to make sure the stroke feels comfortable to you. Ours is nice and smooth, but I've been on some that make my back hurt.
Good luck. I hope you find one you like.

Thanks, Dee! I keep looking in our local classifieds in the hopes that someone's is collecting dust and they want to sell it to someone who will use it! I will google the one you suggested and see if I can find it locally so I can try it first (great advice).
Have a great day,

I belong to a rowing club, and we use Concept2's. So, that's the only brand I"m familiar with. They are great, smooth, on the quiet side for a rowing machine, easy to move around. I definitely don't plan on buying my own, though. I have a hard time w/stationary machines. It's a mental, not going anywhere thing :-)

Susan - I understand the "not going anywhere" issue. I guess I'm used to it because I do a lot of treadmill work (easier on the knee than concrete) and I try to imagine I'm going somewhere.... HA!
I'll check that brand out, too.
Thanks!

We have a Concept2 rower and it cost about $1000 3 years ago. It has been problem-free and as Susan said, easy to move around and the motion is smooth. DH uses it much more than I do.

I think I'll be paying more than I thought... (what's new?)
I appreciate everyone's input!
