View Full Version : Has anyone had an office hysteroscopy?
Hi!
It's been awhile since I've posted here, and I'm probably going to toe the TMI line, but I wanted to find out if anyone here had ever had an office hysteroscopy? I am currently going through fertility treatments, and started injectible meds this month. This morning I had my second day of IUI, and afterwards while lying on the table thinking happy thoughts, the nurse came and said that there was a note from the doctor that if I don't get pregnant this cycle, I need to have an office hysteroscopy. I guess in my baseline ultrasound earlier this month, my uterine lining was thicker than normal. She said not to worry, but of course I can't help but worry about what this may mean. I looked at WebMD for info on a hysteroscopy, but they only seem to give details of the surgical procedure, and I understand this is not that since they do it in the office (plus I'll be completely awake). Has anyone ever had this done?
Thanks so much for any responses!

Not exactly that, but eons ago when I was trying for kids, I had an hysterosalpingogram in the office. It wasn't too bad because I took some pain meds before the procedure. The biggest roll-eye moment was when the male gyn was telling me what I'd feel! As if...
Hope all goes well for you!:)

After going through fertility treatments, I thought I would never forget all the test names, but I have!
I had a test done in the office where they filled the uterus with saline and then inserted a scope to see the contours of the uterus. It was also supposed to help them to know where they should try to place the embryos during IVF.
It was not painful at all and I don't think I pre-medicated for it. The HSG was more painful. The worst thing about saline-in-the-uterus procedure was that the doctor, fellow, nurse and a couple students watched the procedure.
Thanks! That info helps since what you describe sounds like the Hysteroscopy. I had an HSG at the hospital in January and it was terrible. I wouldn't say it was too painful, but it was EXTREMELY uncomfortable and I passed out afterwards (which was mortifying). So that experience has me very paranoid.

Hi Kim,
Is that when they remove the lining from your uterus? If so, I had that done but was asleep because they were taking out a polyp at the same time. I will tell you that it did the trick, because I got PG (with a clomid IUI) the next cycle.
I also had the saline thing done that was described above and it wasn't as bad (or as long) as the HSG.
Good luck!

I went through the same fertility treatment fun and had a hysteroscopy as well (and an HSG - such fun). I had mine as outpatient day surgery in a hospital. I'm not exactly sure what is meant by "office" hysteroscopy - I would definitely ask for clarification. Mine involved anaesthesia, nurses, recovery time, etc. I was left with a small scar in my belly button (and no answers as far as the infertility).
I think in a hysteroscopy they're basically just poking around to see what they can see. ;) A lot of times that's how they diagnose endometriosis, etc. I got some cool pics of my ovaries, which was kinda cool, as far as those things go. :)

Same here. I've heard of the "office hysteroscopy" too though, and it always makes me wonder why I had to go through the whole operating room procedure. I'm not sure what the difference is.

I'm wondering if you guys had a lap to go along with the hysteroscopy. I think that's when they poke around to see what they can find.
Hi!
Thanks for the responses. The office hysteroscopy is done in the office and isn't considered a surgical procedure. While I'm grateful for that, there is a piece of me that is like, just please knock me out.
My understanding is that the one done in the office is just so they can take a peek inside the uterine cavity. I'm not clear on if they actually take a piece of the lining for further testing. The nurse just said that the doctor would just be looking around. Of course I'll only need that if our latest round of IUI didn't work. Fingers are crossed, but I've learned not to get my hopes up.
Thanks again everyone!

I am a fan of valium. You will need someone to drive you home.
Good luck with your IUI. Fingers crossed for you!
