I know I’m really early but since this will go through the 4th of July I’ll say... Happy Independence Day to all!

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread. It’s been a mixed couple of weeks for the folks here. There has been good news, bad news, and revelations about life in general. Sometimes our lessons haven’t been the nicest ones to learn but it’s still been a healthy time and a wonderful later spring - if you exclude the rains over most of the country. I’ll try to go back to a recap but may not do it justice but here goes…

Life successes/Good News include - Laura got DD home from school and is becoming more consistent in her workouts and walking, did some climbing (need to look at the pictures from last week), and had a good week with DS and his swimming; Kate I wish there was something good to say for her but I think her thoughts will be revolving around the bad news from last week so I won’t even try for her (sorry); Karen has been plugging through the end of the school year and got kids home from school, learned about Anoles and their lives, and has had her knee get a little stronger; and I have finished 3+ weeks of my internship and I’m loving it even if it is long hours and lots of emotional time, getting to spend quality time on the weekends with LW and catching up on sleep too.
Stressful living - Kate is reeling as her DBF found out that he will probably get laid off (unless enough people take a severance package), and although she survived the lay off there is a lot of other stress with work and the general economy in the newspaper business; Laura had her knee act up a little after climbing so we hope that she’s back in the saddle soon; Karen tried to get all the things ready for camp (the kids leave this week) and everything packed for their summer away, and she’s still getting used to her kids getting a little older (and wiser I sense); and I am working on life at the Hospital and trying to get regular exercise in but the hours don’t always make that easy.

Workouts: Have been hit and miss for me - a couple runs and a couple rides a week probably won’t change in the coming weeks but I need to do more or revise my plan for the upcoming race (end of August). Both Saturday and Sunday are definitely run/ride days but I can’t account for too many other days in the week.
Healthful living: Sleeping well most of the time and not letting the emotional things at the hospital get to me (hard to imagine).

I ran yesterday and realized that late runs aren’t the best thing for me but I will be fine. I rode today and got just over an hour in and felt good. Then I got to do a little cooking before I settle in to read some of a book for class tomorrow. So I’ll sign off and say until later - be good to yourselves, stay dry, hydrated, and have a good week.

Peace to all,
Les

Les-Happy(early) independence day to you too!:) Thanks for starting us up once again. I hope you have a great week.

My day was a bit "funky." I left the house for my swim as usual, but just as I was pulling into the YMCA parking lot, it starts to lightening and thunder. OH DRAT! They might close the pool. Since I am already there, I go inside and apparently the guard had not seen nor heard any of the action outside. . . YET. Just as I turned around to go back into the locker for my shower, there was a huge clap of thunder and the pool closed. Then as I am about to leave for my car, it starts pouring small farm animals!!! So I sat by the window with the guard while he was watching for the last clap of thunder or lightening strike(since he has to wait 30 min. after that to re-open the pool) and we chatted. DH is home all week and the kids have no school, so I did not have to rush home for any reason. As we are chatting, I saw that the sky was clearing, so I called DH to let him know what was going on and waited it out with the guard. The pool finally re-opened at 6:20 am and I had a great 45 min. swim. The guard was also trying to convince me to join the masters swim team that just started up. He did compliment me when I said that I was not sure if I was good enough. He said that I was much more qualified than most of the swimmers.:) Anyway, since it is outdoors thus gets canceled because of weather often(like today) and is in the evening from 6-8 PM(after I have been up since 5 am and already had 2 workouts!) plus costs a few hundred bucks, I don't think that I am jumping on the bandwagon so quickly. He said that they may continue it in fall at which point they would move it to the indoor pool in the mornings, so maybe in the future. I may still check out a practice at some point.

Anyway, after finally getting home and feeding everyone(including me) breakfast, we had to determine our plans with the kids for the day as the weather impacted those, too. Originally DH was going to do a father-son thing with the boys and take them to the Bronx Zoo while DD and I had a mommy-daughter day which was to include lunch and nails. Since the zoo was out, the kids opted for a movie so DH ended up taking all three to the movies and dinner while I ended up going to boxing, the store, and doing some more packing. Tomorrow DS#1 is going to a friends, DD and I may get that nail job done, and I have to finally finish up the last of the laundry for the kids and their packing. Tomorrow night we will load the car with all of their stuff (of course, with everything they are taking, we may just end up having to tie the three of them to the roof rack!!:D. . . teasing, of course!) Wednesday morning(after my swim!) we head out so we can hit DD's camp just after 9 am and be done dropping off the boys at their camp by noon. Should be a busy few days. Wed. PM DH and I will kick the heels up!;) Of course, I will still have a few cleaning projects to tackle while they are gone, the first being the stripping of all of their bed linens and laundry. I think it is time to "de-tox" closets this summer as well and get rid of some clutter. That should keep me busy(and distracted) for a bit.

As for tomorrow, I will swim. We do not have any far away plans like the zoo since this is the kids last day at home. They want to see friends. If DD is not busy with her friends, I may take her for her nails as was the plan today. I'd do that in the afternoon so I may still go to boxing.

I guess it was a long winded day today!:o

Have a good evening,
Karen

My, you were talkative. It souds like a busy day and I'm not sure that you could squeeze another thing in your day with 2 hours of Masters Swimming practice. Still quite a compliment. I hope the day goes well with dropping the kids off for camp and you have a peaceful time without the kids.

Today was... today. Nothing terrible but a busy afternoon with patients. Still loving things at the hospital - now all I need to do is more workouts and I'll be a madman.

Take care and have a great week. Peace,
Les

Quick check in tonight. . . I had a great swim and ran on the treadmill this morning(felt really good, too:)). Finished up the kids laundry and packing this afternoon. The car is all loaded as well and as anticipated there ain't too much room for the kids!! It's lucky we are not dropping off 4 kids! DH and I took a walk after dinner which was very nice until the skies suddenly opened up on us in a cold drenching downpour. We were a couple of drowned rats by the time we got home.

Tomorrow I will make it for my morning swim; then we will all have a quick breakfast and pile in the car for the camp drop off. DH and I should be done at the two camps around noon since that is when the staff there want all parents to be off campus. We will then S L O W L Y make our way home. I may end up getting started with the initial wave of cleaning which would be stripping all of their beds and we will likely have a quiet evening out for dinner.:) It is definetely a bittersweet day for me. I have felt the stress over the past few days. Although I love that they go to camp and have so much fun, I worry about them and miss them.

That's about it here tonight. They have all had baths as well so they will start off clean. I know that won't last too long, however!!:D

Have a good evening,
Karen

I bet it's melancholy but I also bet you'll have a good summer without them. Do they have a parents day at either camp? Or will you have to make due with snail mail (or e-mail) from your stalwart campers. My opinion, don't rush home tomorrow you'll have a fun time getting home and really relishing the kids being gone. There will be plenty of time to strip beds and clean so enjoy a couple days break. Have a good swim in the morning too.

It's been unseasonably cool (only ~80) and low humidity for the past couple days around here, can you believe it? For what it's worth, work is still going great! I got home early enough (ish) to go for an hour's ride tonight. It was great going out and I even got to my comfort level for speed (~35 mph  ), I figure I can survive falling off my bike (NO I DIDN'T FALL OFF EITHER) at that speed (and walk away) but not much faster so I try to keep it below ~30. Having hills like that make rides fun. Hope everyone has a good week - we're supposed to have a good day again tomorrow, a little warmer (middle 80s) but still no humidity. Maybe...

Peace friends and good thoughts going out to Kate's DBF,
Les

Les, i have something for your "life successes/good news" section. So many people took the buyout that DBF's job (and lots of other people's) was saved! The impetus was that they told the people who work the day shift that starting in August they would have to work the night shift (as i already do). Those day-shift folks were beating down the doors to HR to take the buyout after hearing that.

Still, 20 percent of the newsroom will be gone by the end of the week, and a lot of good people did get laid off, and a lot of people retired earlier than they had planned (or probably really could afford to). But most importantly for me (and my savings account!), DBF wasn't one of them.

He's probably only safe until the next round of layoffs, which we think will be at the end of 4th quarter. but that gives him some breathing room to find a new job.

it's been a really exhausting week. can't tell you what else i've done. tho i'm sure i've gone to the barn a couple times!

karen, good luck taking all the kiddos to camp!

That's great! I'm happy to hear that DBF was spared at least for a while. Who knows it may be for longer than you think. Still good to have him employed for the foreseeable future.

My regrets to those who lost their jobs - that's never a good thing. Interesting how management got folks to take the buy out.

It's not hard to imagine that you can't remember what's been going on the past couple days - it's been pretty hectic for you. Calming prayers headed your way.

Les-Glad to hear that you had a great ride with no spills! I bet the cooler weather is nice for those rides, too.

Kate-I am so happy to hear that DBF did not get the ax. Thank goodness for small favors. At least that buys the two of you some time.

Today was a bittersweet day as I expected. Les, I think you summed it up well with the word, "melancholy." I did have an absolutely wonderful swim this morning(the kids were already up when I left the house at 5:15 am!! Who knows if they even slept much last night!!). After I got home, we all had breakfast and hit the road around 7:30 am. We were done and out of both camps just before noon. On top of feeling "melancholy" about the whole process, DS#1 and I had a little argument before we left his camp which does not feel good at all when you're trying to say "goodbye" for a long time. I know he will forget it right away, but it is/was bothersome to me(not the argument itself which was silliness at best, but the fact that there was one). Anyway, we did come straight home since I was feeling so blue and had a headache by that time, and I did get started on some of the beds. I'm in no immediate rush to finish that, though, so I'll take it at a leisurely pace. DH and I did go out to dinner tonight and for an ice cream afterwards which was very nice and peaceful. As in the past, I know it always takes me a few days to get over the intense "melancholic" feeling. I guess that's just a "mom" thing as I think DH is over it already. Anyway, Les, there is a visiting day for campers that stay 2 sessions only and since my kids are staying both sessions, we will see them mid July. Visiting day is the last day of first session in the afternoon after all of the first session campers have been picked up. Last year we spent that afternoon at the boys camp, since DD only stayed one session(we picked her up to come home, and stopped on the way home to visit the boys). FIL and friend met us there and I made a big picnic basket for all of us. We swam in the pool, toured the camp etc... and left just before dinner. This year we will do the same, but since DD is also staying at her camp 2 sessions, we will pick the boys up at noon and spend the afternoon on campus at her camp; then drop them back at their camp on our way home. The 2 camps are sister camps ~20 min. apart. And the reason that they are at different camps is a whole different story I'll save for later if you are really curious. Both camps are co-ed, though. Anyway, we will also be able to call DS#2 next week(July 1) and DD in August(3rd) since those are their respective b-days. You can only call to speak to campers for b-days. It is usually just a very brief call("Hi" "How are you?" "Having fun?" "Bye":D).

Again long winded today, so I'll call it quits.
Tomorrow I am going to swim, box, and wade through more bed linens.

Have a good evening,
Karen

Thanks Karen - you do sound like you had an emotional day. I'll try to digest it a little tomorrow but I understand the concern with the blow up etc. It will all be good in the long run. Pacing yourself will do wonders so I hope you have a good day at the pool and a good first week with them away.

I laid low for today - not planned but needed. Hard to explain but I'm sure you can imagine how days can go in the hospital. But tomorrow's another day.

Peace friends - the bed calls,
Les

Les-Yep, I completely understand how some days at the hospital can be. . . well, anything goes! Glad you laid low and listened to your psyche.

I had another very good swim this morning, but still feeling a bit funky with the kids gone and the eery silence around here. Having DH at home this week has helped a bit. And the week after next we go to Martha's Vineyard so that will be distracting. By then I should be over the lonliness blues. I went to boxing hoping for a bit of noise and such, but it was a very quiet class today. It was a good one, but just small and not some of the livelier folks. Still, it helped alot. And after lunch DH and I spent some time together in the afternoon. That was nice. I also finished stripping and cleaning all of the beds, remaking them; vacuuming underneath, too!! A regular whirlwhind. I still have a few more "cleaning projects" for the summer as I think closets and drawers are next. But I need to pace myself. I already have several garbage bags of old clothing to take to Goodwill.

Tomorrow I will swim and likely bike. I may get started on closets or bookshelves. We'll see.

Have a good evening,
Karen

P.S.Did not want to reveal myself, but check out the reader recipe section of the July issue. I'm in it!:)

I bet it will take you a while to get over the kids being gone but I hope that you'll enjoy the quiet. It is nice that you can have DH around from time to time to reconnect w/o the kids around. Enjoy the Vineyard when you go, it is a nice place (so I'm told). I'll have to check out your recipe too, did you get anything besides press? I hope that you have a better class(es) tomorrow and a great weekend.

It is kind of funny, it's tiring and hard on my knees and ankles to work at the hospital. It's almost like I'm running in broken down shoes. Maybe my shoes are broken down and I need to get new ones/resole these. My excuse tonight is I went to an Episcopal Ordination (two of my friends became priests in the Episcopal Church today). The service started at 7 and we got home at 9:30 so I blew into the house at 6:40 to go directly to the church. Not complaining, it was great to see folks I haven't seen since May.

Time for a little personal maintenance (sleep) so I'll see you tomorrow and peace,
Les

Les-When I did hospital work, I was in the O.R. all day and wore surgical clogs which were very comfortable. I'm guessing you can't get away with that in your line of hospital work, but do try to find something comfy for your "tootsies.";) It does require alot of foot work which is different than running or biking. Hope you got a good rest last night.

As for my recipe. . . just got press; no cash or prizes. But it was still flattering and cool(IMHO:o).

Today was better for me all around. . .feeling less "melancholy" about the kids absence and some great workouts. I had another excellent swim followed by a really good bike ride after breakfast. Usually that is my least favorite piece of equipment at home, but I still do it on occasion for the variety. Today, however, I worked up a really satisfying sweat on the bike and followed it with 10 min. of weights and a few abs. Rest of the day DH did some yard work. I made it through both DS's rooms(closets, drawers, shelves, dusting etc...). Next up will be DD's. And now I know where the school student directory was hiding all this time!! The kids kept asking me why we did not get one, and I did pay for it at the beginning of the year. They usually give it to the youngest child in the family at school to bring home(why, I don't know....you'd think the youngest would be more likely to lose it). Anyway, for some reason they sent it home with DS#2, but he never gave it to me. Found it in one of his drawers. And he had written one of his friend's phone numbers in it who did not move to our town until this past April, so he knew he had it. Why he never spoke up when we all kept wondering about where it was??? Oh well!:p

This weekend I will ellipticize and ??? DH and I are going to an afternoon party tomorrow for one of the technicians in his department. She is having a house warming party and everyone is asked to bring a plant for her foundation. In the evening we are going out to dinner and to a show at a local dinner theatre. We usually eat out before we get there (show starts at 8PM and doors open at 7 PM . . . and my tummy does not like to wait that long). I pop us a big tupperware of popcorn so we munch on that with drinks(non alcoholic;)) during the show.

Sunday I am going to try to convince DH to take me to the new Indiana Jones movie in the afternoon; then in the evening we are going to an ice cream social/dance/raffle drawing at the temple. Cross your fingers one of our tickets is drawn. I can't remember whether we bought 4 or 5, but maybe we'll get lucky!

Have a good weekend,
Karen

Yep, O.R. clogs wouldn't go over well with my "dress" attire. Granted that ends up being dockers and a dress shirt with appropriate (Looney Tunes, Sesame Street, Dr. Seuss, Crayola, Tweety Bird, Mickey Mouse) tie. We have to look somewhat professional, so I'll go back for another pair of Hush Puppies. Funny about DS#2 forgetting to turn give you the book - almost like he forgot then once he figured he forgot it he couldn't confess that he had it until he really forgot it was there. (Convoluted I know) It sounds like you had a good day today and have a great and fun weekend planned. I agree too, money is nice but being published is great. I hope that your ticket gets pulled for the raffle this weekend and enjoy the movie.

I was off today. Strangely, there was little rain until I got to a mile from the house then thunder and lightening. By the time I actually got home the street was full of water (up to the top of the curb). Electrical storms around here are a big deal - there are lots of tall trees - so I opted out of a run or ride (maybe I sould have gone boating instead  ) I'll run tomorrow and ride on Sunday. Hope all are well and have a great weekend too.

Peace,
Les

Les, take care of those feet. DBF has really bad feet, so he bought Cole Haan's to go with his interview suit. But those were a little $$$$$. They make you hurt in another way!

Karen, sounds like you and DH have some fun things planned. I haven't gotten my July yet, but I'll keep an eye out for your recipe.

I got in a trip to the gym Friday evening. And of course ran into someone from work there so we were yakking about all the drama here. DBF took off Saturday, and we went to lunch with friends and then saw Spamalot, which was a lot of fun. That evening we worked on unpacking some of his stuff that was taking up a lot of space in the spare bedroom. Lots more stuff is put away now. I'd forgotten how big that room was! His things have been piled up since he moved in in Feb.

Today i was hoping for a nice ride on Mack because last night's rain cooled things off, but it was too humid so we didn't do too much. The humidity really takes a toll on his lungs. Plus, he was covered in mud from head to toe! He had mud inside his ears. He obviously had a lot of fun last night.

I'd be tempted to get some nicer (more expensive) shoes but at this stage of the game I'm going through soles quickly so I'll probably stick with Hush Puppies. And since I'm probably going to ride my bike to school more this year than last year (since I didn't ride to school at all) dressy shoes won't be a big deal for me. But I will ake care of my tootsies since they're going to have to last me a long time

Mack sounds like my kind of horse. I won't even ask how he got mud in his ears but he definitely sounds like he had a blast. I know that mud in my ears would be a huge sign that the 5 year old got out and played.

Karen, I forgot to say that we looked at the mag and your recipe looks great. Funny thing though, the recipe at the top of the page has marshmallow fluff in it - which brings a smile to our faces here :D (has to do with Peeps and... I can tell you some other time).

I had a good day today, did some work, some writing for a presentation this coming week, and then got a good bike ride in. The ride was a little therapy because I found that the AC drian had backed up into the basement again and dumped about 5-7 gallons of water down there. Luckily it wasn't too bad and all the stuff at the low end of the basement is now on 1-1 1/4 hi plastic shelves sitting on the ground or else the boxes would have been wet.

Hopefully tomorrow the management will come and clean out the trap again so we don't have to worry about a wet basement again.

Gotta fly but I hope you all have a great week coming up.

Peace,
Les

Kate-Mack sounds like a riot. I bet Les would love to play in the mud with him!!:D

Les-Yes, it did seem like an eclectic bunch of reader recipes this time. Oh well. Sorry to hear about the basement and A/C issues, but at least no damage. That's a releif.

DH and I had a nice weekend, but we did not have any of the lucky raffle tickets. We still had a nice time at the ice cream social/raffle drawing after spending a long afternoon at the mall shopping. No major purchases. . .just a few new casual shirts for DH and a pair of capris for me. I did buy a few things to stick in the kids care packages, though. Saturday we had a nice time as well at the afternoon housewarming party for his associate, a nice dinner out, and the show(Cabaret). And sleeping late on Sat. and Sun. was heaven!!:)

I swam and boxed today; both very nice. No jacuzzi for me yet, and not sure if one is in the near future. I have been using the Y's regular locker room; not their health ctr. where the jacuzzi is located while they are replacing all of the lockers in the health ctr. with new ones. It should be done soon, I think. Rest of the day was a few errands.

Tomorrow we get to speak to DS#2 as it is his b-day(he'll be 11 y.o.!!). Other than that we have seen a few "kid" sightings on the camp website and they all look good.

Until tomorrow,
Karen

It does sound like you had a great weekend. Happy birthday to DS#2 - all of 11 y/o, that's an accomplishment. I hope that he's having fun at camp and that they get some neat pix on the camp website. I also hope that the Y gets their other lockers open so you can get to the jacuzzi soon too, I know how much you enjoy that. I'm looking for mud right now too -- a little rain around here makes it really fun. :D

I took a rest day today and I hope to be home soon enough tomorrow to do a run or a ride. It should be a possiblility so I'll plan on it and make a date - I need to get back into doing good runs/rides - it is good therapy too.

Talk to you all later -- peace,

Les-I do hope you were able to have a good "therapy" session today. I can't agree with you more there. As my DH always says about me and my routine. . . cheaper than a shrink!

And speaking of therapy. . .had a therapeutic swim and run/walk on the treadmill this morning. I stayed home primarily to wait for DS#2's b-day call from camp. He called at about 8:45 AM and we spoke to him for 5-10 min. He sounded good(like he's losing his voice from all of the screaming and singing:D). He said he was really into basketball and was asked to be on the team for his age group. That's a new sport for him, too! He said DS#1 even caught a fish!! Of course, they have to let them go, but he still got one! Overall, it sounded like all was well with the boys. Rest of the morning, I cleaned through closets. After lunch ran a few errands including mailing out care packages to the kids. They can't receive food, but each year I send them one package of "toys' e.g. diving sticks for the pool, mad libs, whoopie cushions:D, a stuffed animal, glow sticks etc... I'm sure they'll have fun with the stuff.

Have a good evening,
Karen

Fly by after a cheaper than a shrink. But still...

Glad to hear that DS#2 is doing well at camp and I'd call that a success that he's losing his voice (I remember those days). Congrats on your therapy workouts today. Hope tomorrow goes well too.

My therapy, I had a good ride tonight. A little disjointed because I saw an instructor that I needed to talk to. Still pulled down about 40 minutes of fun in the failing light.

Gotta fly - hope all are well peace friends,

Les-Good to hear you snuck in some therapy yesterday. It sure helps to keep things focused during the rest of the day.

My therapy consisted of my swim and cardio. kickboxing today for a bit of variety. Since my knee has been feeling so much better, and I want to try the yoga and pilates classes the hotel in Martha's Vineyard offers next week when DH and I are there, I figured I'd give my knees a "test drive" here. I'm glad to report everything is OK so far. My hypothesis is that a piece of the "devascularized wedge" of bone still in my right knee might have flicked off a few weeks back and just took a bit of time to re-absorb, but the wedge has not completely broken apart like it did years ago on the left side. So for now, I'm still "safe."

Other than that did a bit of shopping and made a big pan of brownies for a celebration at DH's work tomorrow for some of the technicians. I may try to sneak a few away from the pan to save for DH and I as we may go on our annual 4th July picnic Friday to listen to the Hartford Symphony Orchestra at Talcott State Mountain Park and see the fireworks. Last year we got rained out. Usually I make a big homemade picnic for the affair, but since we are leaving town Sunday and the fridge has a big echo, we'll just pick something up on the way there(and maybe have a brownie for dessert;)).

Tomorrow a swim and the last boxing class before vacation since the studio will be closed for the holiday after tomorrow.

Have a good evening and an early happy 4th to everyone. My presence may be hit or miss next week since we'll be away, but I will have DH's laptop so who knows. . . .?

Drive by... glad you knee is doing well and it sounds like a sensible plan all things considered. Have a good week next week - hopefully someone will be around here (me included -- see below too). Fridge filling and no kids - that must be fun. ;)

Late again... Today was supposed to be a running day but a bioethics issue/project came up and I need to be ready for a report on Monday so that took precedence, but I hope tomorrow is a good day for running or riding.
Like Karen I will be around for the rest of the week but next week will be problematic for running as I'll be on call the whole week. But for now sleep calls so... until tomorrow (and a shout out to the rest of the gang too - didn't mean to slight anyone).

eta: I'm not even going to lay out my excuses/reasons tonight but it was a bookend day that actually started before "official" work time on a page and ended with the shuttle not showing up for almost 30 minutes (I would have gotten home plenty early otherwise). After sleeping in tomorrow I'll probably go out for a decent ride to see the sights and get some real sun.

Peace all and Happy safe 4th of July,
Les

I hope everyone is having a great (long) weekend. I went on a ride today I had another first in it (drumroll), I got stung by a bee/wasp. The big deal was where I got stung - on my forehead! The critter got through one of the holes in the front of my helmet and died/stunk me before it died. Now I've got a big welt on my forehead. :p Good thing I'm not allergic (especially after swallowing a wasp a couple years ago when I was on the trail). But I finished my ride of ~17 miles. It was a combined event - paying some bills at drop boxes and riding for fun. But I can say that it was also done after sleeping in.

I hope that everyone has a great day. Anyone going out to watch fireworks? Or staying in to watch fireworks (they broadcast the fireworks that go on down on the National Mall)? Not sure that I'll watch but if we do fireworks it will be inside.

Peace,
Les
