I am getting together with some friends for a pull-together dinner tonight... I understand that there will be roasted garlic and cheese for an appetizer, grilled steak and corn, and a dessert. I'm bringing the salad... any suggestions on something that would pair well with steak? (I personally don't eat steak...) I was thinking greens with a balsmaic vinaigrette and maybe walnuts, sun-dried tomatoes... Any thoughts would be appreciated! ;)

Your salad sounds great, but since you won't be eating the main course, maybe you might want to bring something a little heartier and filling -- like a pasta salad? If you're interested I can search my recipes and see what I come up with.

Tracey--that would be a good idea, but I think I'm going to have to try at least a little of the steak to not be rude. She offered to make chicken for me in addition, but I didn't want to let her do that and be "the picky one!!" :p

I make a similar salad that my DH loves -- mixed baby greens, candied walnuts (I just throw walnuts into a dry skillet with some sugar -- I had thought they would just taste sugar coated, but the oils from the walnuts mixed with the sugar makes them very light and sweet), mandarin oranges, crumbled gorgonzola, and balsamic vinaigrette. The sweetness of the oranges and walnuts with the sharpness of the cheese and the tanginess of the dressing makes for a really nice blend of flavors!
