DH will not eat catfish (its a taste issue  )and although I love it, I won't fix it just for me. I would like to make the catfish recipe in the August issue, but was wondering what fish I might substitute. I though maybe sole, but it seems so much "thinner" than catfish fillets.

I would probably give halibut a try. I think it is a very versitile fish and works well with a lot of recipes. It is also in season now so a lot of fish markets carry it fresh.
Generally catfish is considered a firm texture moderate flavor fish. Some other firm texture fish are:
Mild Flavor
Halibut
Grouper
Monkfish
Sea Bass
Snapper
Moderate Flavor:
Amberjack
Mahimahi
Pompano
Full Flavor:
Marlin
Salmon
Swordfish
Tuna

I think I'd go with whitefish, cod, sole, flounder or lingcod. Those are all delicate-textured as well as mild-flavored fish. The flavor of halibut would be a good substitute, but it's much firmer than catfish, and may not cook the same way. (I have a catfish issue, too, but it's more of a "Well, I've never had it but I don't want to like it because it's a scrappy fish" kind of thing. ;)

I got sole and am planning to make the "crisp catfish" recipe tonight. We should compare notes next week on how it turns out.
I figured the breaded mixture would work for any fish, as long as you like that style of cooking. Maybe even a good healthy substitute for fried shrimp.

I made this recipe last night and just for me because DH said "You can have my share". Cute isn't he! :) I had never had catfish either and was disappointed with the recipe and also didn't care for the fish. I think sole may be too thin but I have been wrong before. I also found the coating very bland and needs some spicing up. Let us know how it works for you. Good Luck! :)

I'd really love to hear the results of this recipe with another kind of fish. I absolutely love seafood, but I don't eat catfish. So far, I've avoided the catfish recipes, but was considering trying them with halibut or a whitefish.

I am a non-catfish eating snob, myself, so I hope those of you who attempt the recipe using different kinds of fish post your results!
