Is there a trick to grating fresh ginger? All I ended up with was a big mess.

ALtho I still use ginger because I love it, I find it stringy and hard to mince.

I find that the ceramic ginger grater works the best.

I just always use the smallest holes on my grater. Also, I keep my ginger frozen, because I can never use such a big piece, and then its really easy to grate.

I do the same as Blue Moose. I freeze my ginger and I use a metal grater, and use the smallest holes.

It is a bit messy but worth it. Yumm!

i don't ever grate ginger because i find it to be too messy. usually i'll just mince it or put it in a mini-chopper. i keep my ginger in the freezer also.

I peel the ginger and freeze it. I also purchased a small grater, that's great for ginger and also lemon/orange rind. I find it so much easier this way!

My first attempt at fresh ginger was just last weekend. It wasn't so bad at all. I peeled a little section of it with a potato peeler, and minced it with a knife...chopping it into as tiny pieces as I could. Pretty simple and no major mess at all. I froze the leftovers based on info I found on this board. It also caused me to do a tiny shopping trip at our local Bed, Bath & Beyond. Well....throw in a $5 off coupon and it was a no brainer. I bought a microplane grater/zester. Ok...it was a weak moment!! Can't wait til I need fresh ginger the next time though. I'll decide then whether to stick with the peel and mince idea or not.

I use a Microplane grater for my ginger. It works like a charm, I don't even freeze the ginger before grating.

I peel it and then put it through my Pampered Chef garlic press. I find that works very well.

I also have a jar on ginger on hand, but it has yet to be opened.

I use a MicroPlane grater and it works great. I used to avoid cooking with ginger until I discovered this tool. Sometimes it's referred to as a "rasp". Also it is the best for zesting citrus.
You can buy one at any good kitchen gadget store.
I believe "MicroPlane" is the brand name. Definately worth the $7
