View Full Version : Have you noticed this about the Aug. issue?

Sometimes it is weeks into the month before reviews for the current month start showing up. The people here on the BB have reviewed more recipes from this issue (Aug) than totally in some months, and it isn't even Aug. yet! Most of the reviews have been positive. I believe this will be one of those "stand-out" issues. Just a thought:p

I agree! The thread on one-bowl cakes already has over 50 posts, and there have been many other recipe reviews posted from Aug. already. By contrast, I remember thinking that feedback on the July issue was scant.

Terry, I think you are right about that! The August issue does seem to be a great one. I haven't started making anything from it yet, but the reviews have been helpful.

This is one of the year's best issues as far as I'm concerned!

When I got the August issue, I was so excited!!! I think that every recipe sounds wonderful!! I plan to make an August issue recipe every night this week!!!:D
Terry-
I've definitely noticed that, too! There have been a ton of positive posts for August's recipes. I have many more bookmarked than I have from the past few issues. I loved the Jan/Feb issue, but this might rank up there with it!

Maybe that's why I don't have mine yet...
The mailman must be having a great time cooking all the great stuff from the August issue you guys are all talking about!!!

I thought that there was NO way that the June issue could be beat, especially after the dissappointing July issue, but I have to say:
THIS IS THE BEST ISSUE EVER
I'm really just hoping that I make most of these recipes, instead of just drooling over them.
I just bought the August issue and while alot of the fruit recipes and the one bowl cake recipes look fantastiac I am disappointed in the laack of vegetarian recipes. I know that CL is not geared to vegetarainism but it does seem like many people would like to eat less meat and so it would be nice if the magazine reflected this trend. I thought the idea for vegetarian kabobs- just put on veggies and leave off the meat lacked creativity and showed a lack of concern for vegetarians.
I love the magazine and don't often have any complaints but this issue does disappoint in this regard. Any one else agree with me??
It is hard for me to be critical of my favorite magazine!!:(

How funny this discussion is every month. While I love every single issue of CL, and ALWAYS find recipes that interest me, I agree that some issues are more "exciting" than others. And that leads to my thought that the August issue, while certainly good, does not excite me nearly as much as the June and July issues did! And even May's, for that matter. I have been crazy about every issue so far this year, but this one, except for the cakes, seems kind of boring. Not BAD, just unexciting. Nothing to do backflips over (and I usually do backflips over my CL's!) Sorry, it seems like I'm a dissenter around here on a lot of things. Guess I'm weird.
On a positive note, I just bought 13 old issues of CL (pre 1991), and 5 (count 'em, FIVE!) annuals, also pre 1991! I bought them from half.com, and when I get those, boy, just watch me doing backflips down my block!! CL used to do a lot of typical American foods, done lighter, and when they'd kind of done all of it, they moved on to more ethnic recipes and more unusual recipes (I think it reflected changes in trends in general, too). But I'll be glad to get my hands on some old, typical, "stand by" recipes, done lighter. CL has always done a good job with that.

Hi Kima:
I agree-- I'm in the same boat. CL is my favorite magazine, and I wish that they had better support for vegetarians. I thought they blew off the letter to the editor about veggie dishes in the August issue-- I'd like them to have sidebars on how to make a non-vegetarian recipe into vegetarian by substituting TVP etc. Hopefully they'll read these posts and reconsider!

PS: Did you see the recipe for "fettucini and tofu with finger licking peanut sauce" in the April 2001 issue? It's my *fave*!

I do not like the recipes in August as well as the other months - but that's okay. Can't like everything...

Like Grace, I enjoy reading these posts every month. And like Grace, I flipped through the August issue and was mildly disappointed. Nothing looked that exciting to me--I really liked June and July.
BUT, as you may have noticed from the reviews I've been posting lately, I have made a lot of recipes already from this issue and I think all of them have been very good. I've made a few of the cakes, the mac and cheese, the beef kebabs.... Can't remember what else, but it's all been good.
I enjoy cooking from the current month's issue best so I'll probably rarely repeat these recipes, but it's sure been fun so far!

I agree with Kima, but I have to say some months CL is much better about vegetarian dishes than other months. It's hard for me because I do eat meat, but I don't like to eat it more than once a week. That leaves me with a huge back log of great looking recipes from CL that I feel like I'll never get to (in addition to the ones I like so much I want to try them again). But I always do backflips whenever I see my CL--even if I don't make a lot of the recipes from a particular issue there's usually plenty of other things of interest (like great articles on nutrition or fitness).
I also find I'm just not as motivated to cook in the summer as in the winter because it's so hot (and we don't have central air). It's a shame because usually in the summer I have more time to cook. Oh well, bit of a tangent--sorry.

Very interesting...I thought June and July were a bust, but loved April, May and August. I have a long list of things to make from August. I have lots of fresh peaches thanks to the in-laws and can't wait to try the peach recipes!
