OK, I'm from the NW, and the only thing I know about Fried Green Tomatoes is from the movie
I want to try this recipe! Are "green" tomatoes and variety of tomato or just an underripe one? Sorry I'm such a dork!

I've had fried green tomatoes once. I don't even remember if it was at someone's house, or at a restaurant, that's how long ago it was. But it definitely left a negative impression on me. They were bitter, bitter, bitter! I just figured you'd have to be from the south to get it.
But, my tomato plants took a long time to get started, and since I've managed to fend off the deer (so far anyway), there's no way all of these tomatoes will ripen before it gets cold, so I'm guessing I should try one of these recipes to maybe get another perspective on this intriguing dish.

I posted about the August issue recipe on my thread, Misc. Reviews. I had only ever heard of Fried Green tomatoes from the movie and not being a fan of tomatoes was not intrigued by them. My boyfriend however loves tomatoes and has loved the fried green ones he's tried on trips to the South.
As far as if you should use under ripe or if there is a green variety-- I don't know, but the under ripe ones I used last night tasted pretty good and were almost sweet. I used the Better Boy variety.

There is also a fried green tomato recipe in, I think, the CL 5 Star book. I made it for our cooking club dinner last year and it was great. You made a spicy succotash and served it by alternating FGTs with ripe ones on the serving platter with the succotash down the middle. Very pretty and yummy.
