I would love to make CL's Moroccon-Spiced Leg of Lamb recipe - but what is spiced pear butter or spiced plum butter. The recipe calls for 1/2 cup, so I'm afraid to leave it out in case it absolutely wrecks the flavor. Does anyone know what it is and where I could get it?

Fruit butters are thick jam like spreads, cloudy though. They don't look much like jams. They're wonderful, in my opinion. Look for fruit butters in the same aisle as jams and jellies. You can always heat it up a little and add some cinnamon, cloves or whatever you like in fruit pies. Then use as directed.

You may have more luck finding apple butter -- I'm sure you could substitute it for the pear.

Spiced Pear Butter is one of my favorite jellies. It has a grainier texture than a jam but otherwise is used the same way you would a jam. You can also buy spiced pear jam & jellies. I have a hard time finding them usually - whenever I am at a country fair and someone is selling canned jams I buy a jar. I would not substitute apple butter because the taste is quite different. The spices in pear butter are usually gingery tasting. If you can't find spiced pear butter, I would try plum jam. I believe Knott's berry farm brand has a spiced plum and there are several brands that sell plain plum jams.

Pears are coming into season and pear butter is extremely easy to make, as are most fruit butters. (I have a fruit butter recipe that doesn't call for the stuff to be boiled on the stovetop forever)
If you can't find the stuff, give a shout and I'll post the recipe.
