Thought I'd mention another site for some techniques, etc. at
www.finecooking.com I know it's not necessarily low fat cooking but I do like their articles etc.
P.S This is not an advertisement and I still do love CL!!!!!!!!!!!

I read Fine Cooking too. I've gotten some great recipes and tips from that magazine. I love CL, and it is my favorite, but I think there is room in my kitchen for more than one cooking magazine. :D
Thanks for posting the link!

For me, Fine Cooking is worth the price just for the section on reader tips. I don't cook many of the recipes, though.
Thanks for starting this thread jazzcat. Until now I have never heard of Fine Cooking. I visited their web site and noticed the subscription price is $30.00 for 6 issues. Sounds expensive if you compare it to CL. Is that the going price? Do you get a lot more info per issue than other magazines? I also subscribe to Bon Appetit and it seems a lot less expensive also.

I've been reading Fine Cooking lately, and I like it a lot. They have lots of articles on both the how and why of cooking techniques.
The issues come out every other month, so I guess that explains the price.
The same company makes Threads magazine, which also comes out every other month. I also like it just to browse. The techniques in that are pretty advanced, but they always seem to have articles on the techniques of some interesting designer or an interesting article on antique this and that. I keep buying them and learning things I'd have never known otherwise.

I'm glad to have found this thread. I got a subscription for Christmas from my Brother & SIL and felt a little nonplussed about it. I think I would have rather gotten THREADS but I'll give Fine Cooking a try. I doubt I would subscribe on my own for $5.00 bucks an issue. My brother is quite the woodworking boy and loves Fine Woodworking from the same publisher...Taunton Press. I haven't gotten any issues yet but I'll report in with any interesting findings.

It's $6 per issue if you buy it in the store! I love this magazine, although I don't get it often. I bought their holiday baking issue and have made a number of recipes out of it. All of them were delicious. It's similar to Cook's Illustrated, but I actually like it better.

Hi Erin!
I'll save them up and pass them to you at supper club one of these times. How's the baby doing?

Thanks for the link. I like Fine Gardening magazine, also. It's a quality magazine. My problem is getting to be Too Many Magazines! I bought myself a Barnes & Noble discount card so I can try to save on my splurges;) .What do you do with so many magazines? I need to weed out a few, however I do enjoy reading them over and over. Thank you, Jazzcat. I guess it's off to B&N.

It's very rare that I actually keep a magazine. I tend to routinely assassinate my magazines at the end of the month or every few months depending on when I can sit down and START CHOPPING. Sometimes this involves a little photocopying as well but that's okay with me. It's easier for me to store clippings than pounds of magazines.

That motivates me to do the same. Another thread had some great recipe organizational ideas which I would like to try. Instead of one fat recipe notebook, they suggest several smaller ones with food groups that are similar. Some of these magazines are so loaded with ads, I would be much better off clipping and doing a toss.

I must shop in slums because I've never seen this magazine. Either that, or I'm not as observant and I thought!

Hey! All the better to get the good prices. I keep thinking I need to find a scummier-slummier grocery store for some bargains. That's kind of sick and wrong of me but some things would be fine.
I don't think I've ever looked through Fine Cooking so don't feel badly.

Along with CL I get both Fine Cooking and Cook's Illustrated. While I've had a few failures with Cooking Light, I've never had a problem with anything we've had from either of the other magazines. Both of those are thin magazines and I keep them in magazine holders. I refer to them as often, if not more often, than Cooking Light. They are expensive though.

I used to subscribe to Fine Cooking, it does have some good tips and recipes but when I looked at the fat and calorie content of the recipes I couldn't belive the high numbers! In many issues there were letters asking about cutting out some of the fat & calories but they refused (with the support of many readers). And that is fine, they are committed to publishing high quality recipes and I was looking for high quality, healthy recipes. (This is why Cooking Light is one of my favorites).
I now subscribe to Cooks Illustrated that is also committed to high quality recipies, but has more articles on techniques and product comparisons. They are the same people that do America's Test Kitchen on PBS. This is their web site (which I also subscribe to)

Okay. This is OT, but do you and Erin ever shop at Treasure Island? I used to love that store when I lived in Chicago.
As for Fine Cooking, I usually read it while I drink coffee in the bookstore. Like Cook's Illustrated, I only buy it when I'm feeling wealthy ;). Fine Cooking has a great website and a nice bulletin board community too.
Of course, CL is MUCH better and FC does not have light recipes.

good for receipes, but there are some rude, angry posters on their BB. Think I'll stick with this board. We're a lot nicer!

Occasionally! It's the closest grocery store to me so sometimes I go in there when I'm feeling too lazy to walk the extra blocks to Jewel. They have some lovely gourmet items but I have to say the rest of the grocery store looks kind of tired to me. It could use a little face-lift.

Hi Laura, Hanne's doing very well. One of these days I'll bring her to supper club. She's a very social baby and would love to entertain everyone. :D
Anna, I've only been into Treasure Island occasionally. There isn't one near me. I usually stick to Jewel and Whole Foods, although after Hanne's next ped appt we're stopping at Trader Joe's!

I was actually trying to be funny when I said I slum, but I am NOT adverse to a good deal. And after as much money as I have spent on my pets this month (and it's only the 10th?) I may be panhandling! :o
The stores I shop here are Randall's, Kroger, Central Market. I occasionally go to Fiesta, tho. Whole Foods and Seekers are occasionals also.

Fine Cooking, like Cook's Illustrated is a highly technical cooking magazine. I consider them equal in value but FC is a heckuva lot better looking. They have improved their food photos some were absolutely horrible and the participants on Cook's Talk, the FC discussion board chimed in with our reviews. FC's recipes are extremely sound and appeal to both pros and avid home cooks. I highly recommend it.
