5 miles for me today....woo hoo! I was a little hesitant to go for 5 since lately it seems like I am averaging about one, or two at the most, runs per week, but it felt pretty good. A little warm in the sun if you were running, cool in the shade, no complaints. Did some yoga early this AM, too, so a nice start to the weekend.

The kids are both marching at the football game tonight. DS has a CC meet tomorrow bright and early....first one this season, so that should be fun. Still more rain in the forecast, so hopefully it will all still happen.

Have a great weekend everybody! :)

Happy Friday, everyone! Thanks for starting this week, Kathy. Great work on the 5 miles!

Les, okay, was the link to your race photo identified in any way before you underlined and colored it red for me?!?!? Okay, it must have been since Nat commented but… I didn’t see anything… I’ll just go ahead and blame it on my small laptop screen, okay?

The photos looked fun and the leis quite appropriate for running in the tropics! 

KathyB and TKay, yes, I’m serious about the ice cream. It was incredible. The first bite was intense chocolate but, soon after the second bite the heat from the smoked habaneros came through (quite strongly!) then, somehow, the avocado appeared. It was strangely wonderful! :)

Susan, nope, mapmy run behaved this time!

Robyn PLEASE don’t mention snow. Yet. ;)

Must get going now. 3/4 of the car is packed and I am exhausted, but there’s a lot more to do before we leave in the morning. I managed a 40-minute run yesterday, but felt lucky to get in some yoga and weights today. It looks as though we will be driving through Hanna’s remnants (2-3” of rain tomorrow where we are going, so it will be a yucky trip), but it’s supposed to clear up by Monday morning’s scheduled First Beach Run of 2008. :D

Hope that you all have a great weekend and I’ll drop in when I can!

Hey runners (and cyclists, etc.)!

Les - Thanks for the race report - boy, that is a tough race (I'm still not ready to do it again). I'm glad they changed the finish because I struggled the last 3 or so miles. But it's probably a nice chance for you to see your Va. Beach buddies and that wonderful running group of yours.

Robyn - You are an awesome exercise role model. I love hearing all of your great reports - keep up the good work!!

Susan and Natasha - You two are always my heroes. Nat, I'm sorry about your stomach issues during the half-ironman event, but I admire the fact that you were able to get through it.

Things continue to be hectic for me. Our neighborhood race is coming along - check out our website - www.inglewood5K.com. Every single day brings new adventures. I look at races so much differently now that I know what goes into planning them.

I ran a 5K on Labor Day. It was a fairly big event with a 10K, a 5K, a walk and a kids' run. The course wasn't hillly at all (for this area) and I ran it as hard as I could, but finished a little shy of my goal. It was hot and humid that day - nothing like what Les experienced, though. I'm hoping that my times drop once the weather cools off.

Tomorrow is a busy day - I'm cheering on some friends at a local tri, dropping off race fliers, picking up sponsor checks and hopefully making it to a cookout. Sunday is a run with a new friend and the Titans game.

The absolute best thing about being involved with the race is the people I've met. The friend I'm meeting for Sunday's run ran the Labor Day 5K with me and we had a great time together.

So things are very busy for me, but very rewarding at the same time. My life feels quite full and although I don't think I could keep up this pace year-round, for right now it's working.

I'm happy to read all of your race reports - keep up the great work!

Kathy B - Thanks for starting us again this week. Congrats on your 5 miler today - you might be one of the few people who can get a good run in this weekend too.

It was great to change the course and even better to run with friends again. BTW - lots of them asked about you and send their regards, you really made an impression on them when you were in town almost 18 months ago. If you'd like, we're ready for you to come run next year, and I bet we can find a couple folks to run with you whatever pace you decide to run. ;)

It sounds like you have been quite busy and very happy with what you're doing. Keep it up - you sound like you're in your zone. Isn't it grand to work with great people too? It sounds like you're making fun plans for the coming season too.

Vicci - I hope you have a safe trip to the beach and don't get too much rain from the remnants of Hannah.

I skipped my workout today but probably should have run or ridden because it probably won't be useful to run tomorrow - they are predicting between 2 and 8 inches of rain between 10 am and 4 pm. :(

Hope everyone is keeping cool and dry this weekend. I hope to be in touch later as long as the electricity doesn't go out...

Happy trails,
Les

Hey all, I hope that everyone had a good day today and didn't get too much in the rain realm. Alas, I didn't get a run in today or a ride - lots of rain but not much wind. The worst thing was the fact that I ended lugging out between 50 and 70 gallons of water from my basement today - one window well didn't drain correctly and there is a hole in the wall that leaks (cinder block wall that somehow was getting water from the outside). I thought I'd share a couple pictures with you - to give you an idea of what's going on around here...

I knew I'd get the chance to put that wet suit to use...

You can see how much water near my house...

Plus you can see a couple more pictures if you'd like.

No wonder I couldn't get out and run today eh?

Happy trails all - tomorrow I start at the church I'll be working at over the next couple years. So to bed early today...

Les, wow, that's a lot of rain! Great use of the wetsuit :D Hope all went well at the church. It must have been kind of daunting to go there knowing how much you will be doing there in the next couple of years.

Betsy, great to see you! Thanks so much for your kind words... aw shucks. :o You made my day! Good job on your recent race though I'm sorry you didn't make the time you wanted. As you say, it should help when the temps cool down. Good luck with your upcoming race and I admire you for putting it together. Love the middle school band cause too - I'm a sucker for maintaining music programs in school because I think they give so much.

I don't think I'll put together an event anytime soon, but do need to make a point of at least volunteering at a local event this fall. I've volunteered before but not this year.

Kathy, that's excellent that you got in your 5 miles! Did the kids' activities go off as planned? Sounds like they are having a ball with HS and associated activities.

Vicci, hope your trip is going well and that you manage to get out for that beach run on Monday with NO rain!

Susan, picking up from last week - 19.5 miles, awesome! What will be your longest pre marathon run this time, do you think? I hope there isn't rain for IM WI today! Must have been kind of surreal to be volunteering there this weekend.

Robyn, did you ride this weekend, or maybe swim? Carrie, how is your 1/2 training going?

Yesterday I went for a trail run and did about 50 minutes. It was my first post-race run and I was sluggish at the outset, but picked up speed and stride length as I went. I enjoyed running for running's sake and had a little stop at the falls to contemplate them, the huge trees around, and the beautiful day - and to feel grateful for family, friends, health, running, and so on. In the morning we went to the farmers' market; at night we went to the drive-in (with the pup ;)). That was fun!

Today it's raining so DH and I took the opportunity to go for a ride. I'd never really ridden in rain before so it was a good chance to try it. It was raining steadily the whole time - not a heavy downpour, but certainly not light. We did about an hour on the rolling hills and it was pretty fun and was not scary (though I was a bit apprehensive before/during the biggest descent - I wasn't at all apprehensive by the second big descent). Funny thing - I was much more relaxed riding in that than I was with riding in general even 6 weeks ago. We were drowned rats by the end despite being properly dressed, so when we got home we had a hot lunch and DH just turned on the pilot light for the gas fireplace. I'm off to make us some apple cinnamon tea.

Hope everyone has a splendid Sunday!

An easy 2.5 for me today between church and lunch. Might have gone longer, but I didn't want everyone waiting on me for lunch. Planning to drop in the CC a little later for some weights.

Vicci, Hope you arrived safely and have a GREAT vacation! Beach running sounds terrific!

Natasha, your day yesterday sounds absolutely lovely. And the ride in the rain today must have been quite the adventure. I have found that as soon as I am wet, it doesn't matter anymore. It is just the IDEA of getting wet that seems to bother me. So far the weather has been very cooperative for weekend activities. And yes, the kids are both having a great start to their school year. :)

Les, sorry to hear about the water problem. Those are such a drag! Hope your first Sunday at the new church went well. Hope you find time for a run/ride soon!

Elizabeth, nice to hear from you again, and it sounds like you are having a lot of fun with the race organization. How cool that your race benefits the HS band. With both of my kids in band, I know what a struggle it is for the schools to keep a supply of decent instruments in good repair for the students to use in addition to music, uniforms and transportation costs. I am sure the school is extremely grateful for your help!

Robyn, hope you had a great ride this weekend!

Hi to Carrie, Kathy, Tkay, Susan and all! Hope your weekends are going well!

Thanks Nat and Kathy. The rain was no fun and the water in the basement left a lot to be desired - luckily I could hae a little fun in the process (and only a little mind you).

Nat - Sounds like you're getting back after your Du last weekend - good for you to hit the 50 minute run too. A drive in? I don't think there are any drive ins in the local area (or many in the states) that are still functioning which is too bad.

Good run today Kathy B, and to get it in after church is a blessing.

Things went well today at church. Met a bunch of new folks, had a picnic lunch (scheduled and not for my arrival), and have a good feeling abotu the place. I'm already on tap for preaching two times between now and the middle of November. Not bad, just something to work on. I have the blessing of preaching on the day where many churches bless animals - that could be a riot!

Studying calls so I hope that everyone had a good weekend and stayed dry (ish). I also hope that Carrie doesn't get whacked by Ike this week.

Happy trails all,
Les

I'm exhausted so just a quick pop in to say hi and report today's ride ended up at 61 miles. Couldn't do the hill to get me to 70, it would have burned me out and killed me for the return miles back to the finish. I'm happy with the 61 although a bit disappointed. :( The high points of the day were hitting 41.4 mph :D and keeping a higher average speed than I expected. I'd stated I'd be somewhere between 14-15 but really thought it wold be somewhere between 12-13 but I finished at 14.9mph. I have some photos that I'll get posted in the next couple of days.

Happy Monday, gang! I'm wishing it was another 3-day weekend! It's raining today, and I'm exhausted from a full day of IM spectating, so really want to curl up on the sofa with a book. <sigh>

Elizabeth - Great to hear from you again. Glad you got in a recent 5K race. I had a cruddy race recently, too, but then bounced back. Still not sure what I did differently, but some races are just like that

Nat - Nice job riding in the rain! That's a huge confidence booster in terms of riding skills, for sure. I'd like to hit 22 mi before my race, which is still 6 weeks away, so I think I'm on schedule

Les - Good luck w/drying out!!

Robyn - Even w/out that last hill it sounds like you had a great ride. How is the higher cadence coming along? It takes a while to get used to that, I think

Kathy - I wish I had your discipline for lifting weights! I know I could benefit so much from that.

Well, I've had a weird training schedule this week, but just need to put it behind me & move on. I didn't get any training on Fri or Sun. I ran Sat and had horrible shin pain almost the entire time, so cut my run short. DH convinced me it was the right thing to do, but was very tough mentally. Hoping today the legs feel back to normal.

Ironman day yesterday was awesome! The athletes had perfect, perfect weather. The high was only 69. A bit of wind, but nothing to complain much about. I went down to watch the swim start w/2 girlfriends. For the first time, I stayed until the swim-time cutoff. A girlfriend of mine was one of the last out of the water, but she made it! (didn't make the bike cutoff though :-( Haven't talked to her yet)

DH & I went out to the bike course on what athletes & locals now call "Tour de France hill" b/c of the big spectator crowds. It's really fun. Then went back downtown where we could walk to multiple points of the run course & cheer. Got to see several friends on multiple parts of the course. They all did really well & finished strong. One of my fav women pros won the race, which is her first time at 1st place. Definitely fun to watch her!

Tonight is the volunteer dinner, which is fun b/c they tell race stories, show videos, etc. Kind of geeky, but cool.

Absolutely must get in a run before then! It will be a wet one. Maybe I can channel some of Nat for my workout!

How did I miss this the first time around? :(

Susan - Drying out nicely these days. It sounds like you made due this year not participating in the IM WI - sorry about your friend not making the bike cutoff - maybe next year? I like the sound of your hill, especially the nickname.

Robyn - Sorry that you didn't make all the ride you wanted but 61 is something - my backside cringes just thinking about sitting on my bike for that long.

I'm starting to get into a rhythm for now. Class this afternoon was fine and I even got home and took a long-ish ride (for a midweek ride that is). Just over an hour and missed a lot of traffic. :)

Studies call again tonight - I hope that folks are well and battening down for Ike if necessary.

Happy trails,
Les

Drive-by for me. Just wanted to say I finally got in that first run. Actually, it was a walk/run and only lasted a half hour. It made me remember why I'd been putting it off. Uh, it was hard. But I'm so glad I did it.

Tomorrow I'm meeting a friend at a morning yoga class. Personal greetings as soon as I get a moment. It's been busy around here.

TKay - Nice job on getting out for that run! It takes a while for the endorphins to kick back in. A yoga class is sounding awesome right about now. Havent done that in ages.

Well, I didn't get out for a run yesterday. It was really dumping steadily and quite chilly. Of course, once my afternoon meetings started & I had to leave for my mtg...everything dried up. Oh well. Definitely running today. It's lovely again.

Anyone heard from Seathyme lately?? She should be back from her annual UP gig by now.

Natasha
09-09-2008, 04:20 PM
Good to hear about your run, TKay! Enjoy the yoga.

Susan, glad the weather cooperated for IM WI! Sorry to hear about your friend, though.

Les, thanks for the church report. Sounds like it should be a wonderful place to be for the next couple of years.

Kathy, good job getting in the run after church.

Robyn, 61 miles - good stuff! Just think; that's just a smidge shy of a metric century.

Hi to everyone else!

Off day yesterday and today I plan to spin. Tried to see Run Lola Run on the weekend but stopped about 25 mins in and had no desire to start it again. I do look forward to seeing Run Fatboy Run though - Simon Pegg is hilarious! Anyone else planning to see it on DVD?

Best to all,
Nat

Okay, so yesterday was a planned off day and today my back is killing me so nothing today either. Going for my first masters swim workout tomorrow if the back is cooperating. Here are some pics of the ride this weekend!

Drive by...
I got a postcard from seathyme and Legolas when I got back from Canada but haven't heard from either of them since.
Nice picutres Robyn looks like a wonderful ride. Probably a good thing that you took the day off too.
Hat - A rest day was in order after your rainy ride. Things look grand for me this coming year too.

Howdy to the rest of the gang. Claiming an hour's run tonight. Felt pretty good but it was nasty humid - even with the rain that fell. :(

Bed calls - hope all are well and I'll see you sometime tomorrow.

Happy trails,

Nice pics, Robyn. Looks like wonderful weather and scenery together. Lovely. Do I detect a riding skirt on your friend? These skirts are everywhere! ;) I love self-portraits like yours. Dh and I take them all the time. My BIL takes them of himself everywhere. "Here I am in front of the family water skiing. Here I am in front of my buddies eating dinner." It's a crack up. Hope your back cuts you a break and get in that swim.

Les - Good going on that hour's run. Hope it wasn't too unpleasant with the humidity. (I took a peak at the rain photos you linked and I still can't get over the amount of water you had flowing. Yikes!) What do you plan to say about the animals? :)

Nat - Glad you had a nice post-race run, complete with gratitude break. That's always a good thing. A drive-in with the pup sounds like so much fun!

Susan - Were you able to squeeze in that run today? Did your shin cooperate? Your IM spectating sounds like a blast.

KathyB - Do you have trouble breaking up workouts in a single day (like your run after church and weights later in the day)? I think it's a great way to get more in (and used to do it when I had more time flexibility--read that: before kids). I just never seem to manage it now.

I went to my favorite yoga class today (love the instructor--it's soothing just listening to her voice) and had coffee with a friend afterward. Now that's the way to start your day. Tomorrow is a scheduled run.

Hi to everyone I missed--Elizabeth, Carrie, Seathyme (wherever you are), beach-runnin' Vicci and all the rest.

4.3 miles for me today. Not particularly energetic, but I'm usually a little sluggish the day after I work 12 hours. Anyway, got it done. Think I will have to go mow the front yard, soon, too. NOt that I want to, mind you, but we have to get it in on the non-rainy days or pay for it later when it's tall enough to bale!

Tkay, YEA for your first 30 min run in a while! Good for you getting back into it. :) Yoga today sounds like a perfect "to follow". :) I don't often break my workouts up that way, just worked out like that on Sunday. I have read where 3 10 minute workouts is actually more effective than 1 long one, and I always wonder how you would know when to take a shower?

Good job on your hour run, LEs!

Robyn, sounds like a GREAT weekend ride. Congratulations! ANd thanks again for sharing the pics. Easier to be there virtually when we can see it for ourselves.:D

Natasha, I have seen previews for Run Fatboy Run, though I had forgotten all about it. It looked really fun. I will have to look for it. Hope you got your spin in yesterday.

Susan, watching the IM sounds like a blast. I wonder if they do an IM around here....hmmm? Did you go to the volunteer dinner? That sounds fun, too. Hope your run was dry. (Or at least not TOO wet!)

TKay

I had to pop back in because I got in another run today. I did a little over a half-hour on the TM. I alternated with some walking in there so I won't be too sore. I was sore after Monday, so I want to ramp up slowly.

KathyB - That shower question is a conundrum, isn't it? :D Do you shower first thing or wait until it's completely over? Hmm...would you ever actually BE fresh? ;)
Nat - I forgot to respond to your Run Fatboy Run question. I just looked at the trailer for it, and oh my gosh, it looks hilarious. Thanks for mentioning it. It's going in my rental queue.

SusanMac

Nat - I *love* Run Lola Run! How could you not like that movie? DH has a crush on the lead actress (not her hair, tho) who was also in The Bourne Identitiy. The RLR music is on his runing list.

Kathy - No IM near you. The closest ones to you are WI and Louisville.

TKay - Last year I had a lot of days where I'd swim in the lake in the a.m. Work all day feeling grungy. Then go for a bike ride and not shower til the end of the day. Thank god I work by myself!! It also helps that DH had a similar schedule, so wasn't too offended

Robyn - Love the pictures!

Tues - Had an awesome 60-min hill run at the dog park. I think the rest days & soft trails helped, as I didn't have any shin issues. I had so much energy. The weather was perfect, too, which helped.

Trying to get out the door for a run tonight b4 it gets too late. Yikes -- I have a hard time finding a place to actually cut off work. Does anyone else have that problem? There's always one more email or one more to-do.

Natasha

Hat checkin' in :D (sorry, Les, I couldn't resist!)

Robyn, nice pics!

Kathy, I don't blame you for not always feeling your perkiest the first run after a 12-hour shift! Great job.

TKay, another run - whoo hoo!

Les, glad you fit in the ride even if it was rainy.

Susan, I so wanted to like RLR but it just wasn't doing it for me. May have been partly my mood at the time. I might try it again sometime. Glad you clarified that DH wasn't a fan of Franka's hair in that movie! :D

What a day - no workout, but I did have dinner with my mom and sis and that was nice. Glad to be home though and to see my boys. It's been quite the whirlwind day. I did get in an excellent spin yesterday.

Oh, re: showering - when I do "two-a-days", I sometimes will shower in between, and sometimes not, depending on what else I'm up to that day, and also depending on how much I need it. If I'm going out and need to be remotely presentable, I'll shower, but if I'm kicking around home until the next workout, perhaps not until I'm all done.

Best to all!

Another thing I"ll do a lot is shower, but not wash my hair & wear a cap until my next workout.

Got in a great run yesterday. I decided to do some intervals. 4x800m, with warmup/cooldown to total 45 minutes. It felt really good, and I know my legs need more practice with high-turnover.

I kind of hate it when I'm on my interval portion, and someone runs past me & I can tell it's just an easy jog for them. I try real hard to look natural & not huff & puff so they think it's an easy run for me, too :-) What a dork

TKay
09-11-2008, 11:28 AM
Susan - Dh also loves the Run Lola Run/Bourne girl. Funny about the non-huffing and puffing intervals. You're not a dork. I think everybody does that. Dh told me that when he's racing, he'll close his mouth when he passes someone for that extra psychological blow. :D
Natasha - Glad you had a nice dinner with the gals.

Showering again. I would skip it if I was just working at home all day (which I typically am). But I hate to pick up the kids from school or the bus stop looking greasy or whatever. There are other moms looking fresh as daisies, perky with lipstick. I know I shouldn't care, but you know I do. I'm not doing the two-a-days now, so the point is really moot for me. :)

Went to a fantastic yoga class this morning. I came home feeling phenomenal. Loose, happy, at peace. I sat at my computer and remembered it was 9/11 and felt sort of guilty for forgetting. :(

Kathy B

45 min on the EB for me today. Wanted to run, but had to be near the phone and ready to jump up and go home if the plumber called (leaking toilet)! I have to jump and run whenever the kids call for rides, too, because DS's car is finally in the shop getting repaired from the rear-end hit he got about a month ago. My phone is ringing a lot these days....and I'm getting in a lot of jumping and running as well. :D

Your yoga class sounds nice, Tkay. I took a class once and didn't care for it much because it moved pretty slowly and was geared more towards seniors. I have gotten used to the Namaste series on TV that mostly keeps you moving, and now I don't know if I would be happy with a class. My impression is that you spend a lot of time holding poses rather than moving through them. How is yours?

Good job on your intervals, Susan! Sounds like quite a workout. I have to admit that for me, an 800 would NOT be an interval. When I do them, it is more like from one street light to the next during a regular run.

Natasha, hope the whirlwind was all good. Great that you had a good spin yesterday. Now for a relaxing evening!

I only know it's 800m b/c DH measured it on his GPS. His new toy. He now poo-poo's my HRM. I guess I'm old school now!

There are definitely yoga classes that move quickly through poses. Each of the types of yoga is different that way, although I always forget the different names.

No workout today, as tomorrow is LSD day. I really would have liked to do a short, light run. But the work schedule didn't allow it. I even have a mtg tonight 6-8pm. Haven't done that in a while.

Kathy, sounds like you're getting in some plyometrics of a sort! ;) Glad DS' car is finally getting fixed.

Can't say the whirlwind was all good... but it was what it was. Today I have had a much better day (at least so far)! Super productive (as was yesterday but yesterday was more stressful). Also got in a lunchtime ride and enjoyed the great weather.

Susan, enjoy the LSD :p :D

TKay, the yoga sounds good. I need to do more of that these days. I really must stretch extensively tonight. So incredibly sad about 9/11. It's just chilling to think about, even to this day.

We are making dinner to take over to a friend who is recuperating from surgery. We'll have dinner there and catch up a bit, then head home.

Hope everyone else is doing well too... Les, Carrie, Vicci, Seathyme, Betsy, Robyn, ktg, Legolas, Mary, and the rest!

Hat checkin' in :D (sorry, Les, I couldn't resist!)
Touche! That's what I get for being in a rush... :)
What a day - no workout, but I did have dinner with my mom and sis and that was nice. Glad to be home though and to see my boys. It's been quite the whirlwind day. I did get in an excellent spin yesterday.
I'm glad to hear that you had a good day with family and a couple good workouts this week.

Susan - Great job on your interval workout the other day and I hope that you enjoyed your rest day today.
Kathy B - I'm not sure what I'm going to say to the animals yet - still a little time to go between now and then - and the readings in church aren't really "pet" focused. :( Glad DS got his car back after having it in the shop. I hope you figure out your "showering routine" around your workouts. A lot of how often I would shower when working out twice depends on how sweaty I get. In the late-fall winter I can do a double without a shower after the first most times but in the summer - no way Jose.
TKay - It sounds like you're getting back at it with your workouts. I'm glad you're doing so well with your yoga too.

I will confess that (1) I haven't run in two days and (2) sadly I didn't forget what today is. My excuse for not running - I had planned on baking bread yesterday for our first community Eucharist/Communion service tomorrow evening so I had planned on not working out and baking. That was until I got home and realized that I had about 8 lbs of white flour and 2 cups of wheat (I need 4 cups of wheat and I can't substitute in the recipe for lots of foood sensitivity issues). So tonight was the evening to bake bread for tomorrow - thus making 2 days off. And I'm not sure that I felt up to it anyway - it was a really yucky day (you can see my post on the "Memorial" thread on the Other Stuff board).

I'm better now but it was and always will be a tough day for me.

Tomorrow... don't know about workouts etc. but may try to sneak one in after class before service tomorrow evening.

Hope all are well and those in TX/lower-midwest are safe as Ike comes ashore.

Happy trails all,
Les
