Really? I get to start?

Unfortunately, I have no run to report. Yesterday was an off day due to work. Today was a planned run but I have yet to get out for it. Work is not letting up. If the run doesn't happen, I'll add one to the weekend plans.

Robyn - Bummer that the master's class wasn't what you were hoping for. Glad your mom finally has power (and is safe!). Happy to hear the funk is lifting. Enjoy your longish ride.
Les - I've noticed the darkness creeping in earlier and earlier in the evenings. I'm not sure I'm ready for summer to be over.
Nat - Your poor bikes. At least they have each other. :D
Ktg - Hope you're feeling better. It's no wonder you got sick. You have been doing a lot lately. Hang in there. Thanks for the thoughtful words about my dog.

Hello to everyone else, and happy Friday all!

TKay - you beat me to it! Thx for kicking things off. I hear ya on the crazy work front. I feel like I've been in nonstop meetings for about 4 days.

Nat - maybe your bikes & my bikes should get together? DH & I are doing a 62-mile organized ride next weekend and decided we should go find our bikes as a way to get ready :-)

Robyn - We have a cool book called Swim Workouts in a Binder, that you can probably find on Amazon. It's even waterproof so you can bring it poolside. I use it a lot to give my swim workouts variety (when I'm swimming, that is :-)

I have 2 fun running updates:
1) Got in a great interval workout yesterday. 5x800m, 45 min including warmup/cooldown. I'm really liking intervals. They're a fun change.

2) I went to an Active Women's Night event last night, where Suzy Favor Hamilton was speaking. She's a 3-time Olympian and NCAA champ at 1500m. Very cool to hear her talk about running, her career (she's no longer competing), what it's like to compete at the world level, etc. Definitely fun!

Today is rest day. Sat is LSD day. Then Sun I fly to Orlando for a work conference. So my weekend is kind of cut in half

Anyone have fun weekend plans??

Natasha

Susan, ooh, the organized ride sounds fun. Yes, I think our bikes should all have a virtual get-together! ;) Enjoy Orlando (yes, I know it's for work, but hopefully you'll still fit in some runs).

TKay, thanks for starting us off this week. Did work let up so you could fit in your run? Yes, at least the bikes have each other (awww... ) :p

ktg, belated condolences about your cat :(

I've also noticed that about the evenings and am not ready for it either! Not with the truncated summer we had.

Robyn, glad your mom has power and that your workouts are picking up!

I'm debating a shortish ride... feel kind of low energy today and it's been quite the week so I might not. I really should do it, though. We'll see.

Best to all!

Hi everyone.

Natasha, thanks for the condolences on my cat...she had renal failure and we gave her subq fluids for a couple months but it just wasn't enough for her. Did you go out for the ride?

I'm enjoying the cooler fall-ish weather, but it's hard to see the days get shorter.

Susan, hope your trip to Orlando is hassle-free and you get some runs in. Sounds like a neat lecture you attended.

TKay, I can't remember what kind of work you do, but it is certainly keeping you busy.

I didn't get out for a run today but did do some weights. I am feeling a lot better today so I think I'll set the alarm for a run tomorrow morning....gotta run on the golf course before the golfers get out there.

Have a good weekend everyone.

TKay - Thanks for starting! Were you able to get out for a run today? Or are you going this weekend?

Susan - nonstop meetings for 4 days sounds like my idea of work purgatory! Hope you are able to get a few rides in before your long ride next weekend :) Hopefully the weather will stay okay for you in Orlando. Here (a bit north of Orlando) we got our first taste of fall weather!

Natasha - Did you get a ride in? I hope your energy level gets back to normal soon.

Kathy - Sorry to hear about your cat. Great job on the weights.. that is still something I need to fit into my routine.

I got in 45 min runs yesterday and today. My legs felt like they finally recovered from last Sunday's run so that was good! This weekend I am going to the beach and am hoping to run there. Any advice for running on the beach? I am imagining closer to the water would be best since the sand is packed harder... Okay, off to read last weeks thread so I can really catch up with everyone!

Back to backs because I finally got to catch up with everyone!

Susan - I think she is not doing much either :( Oh well, she is very busy in the second half of an intensive school program.. So maybe when she graduates.

TKay & Kathy - I know what you mean about not feeling experienced enough to volunteer! I decided to go for it this time because a friend from my class over the summer is putting on the race.

Natasha - Funny about "visiting" your bikes!

Kathy - I hope you are feeling better today. Funny about the hill comment! Kind of like my friend's comment about the elevation :)

Robyn - Sorry to hear the masters class was a bust!

Les - I know! This semester has been flying by. Do you graduate this year?

Leslie Ferguson

Taky - Thanks for starting this week - I really didn't want to start considering I didn't run/ride today either.

Les - I know! This semester has been flying by. Do you graduate this year?
I only wish, I won't graduate until May 2010, our program is 3 years. I'm doing a lot of practical work this year so I'll be busy but necessarily busy so I don't get "dropped" into a Church without a good idea about what Church ministry is about (because it's different from this "side").

Short note for tonight. Mostly because I had a fun evening tonight. I helped a friend out by tending bar at the South African Embassy (poured wine, juice, and sparkling water). We were there because his church that he's doing his internship at helps send missionaries to South Africa. Neat place and plenty of neat people all around. But that kept me from riding or running today, but that's okay - I'll do one or the other tomorrow. But for now... sleepy time is coming so until tomorrow...

Happy trails,
Les

Hi folks, Dipping my toe back into the VRBs. After having put on 10 pounds over the past 9 months, I know running can help me get back on track.

Today really is my first day back. I am planning a 40 minute run/walk. Actually, I did run/walk for 17 minutes last week so maybe that was my first day. I am looking for a race to get me motivated, but I am not sure that I want to commit to a half, and training for a 10k doesn't get me all that excited. First things first though, I want to get back to where I am running for 40 minutes.

Natasha
09-20-2008, 02:49 PM
Laura, great to see you after a while, and good luck building up the base again! You'd mentioned that a 10k isn't too exciting but that a half is a fair training commitment... are there any races your way that are around 15k or 10 miles? There aren't a lot of those around here, but there are a few and it's a nice distance that doesn't require a ton of training (though I know you know all this since you've done all the long distances before).

Les, tending bar at the embassy sounds like a blast!

Carrie, that's good that your legs are feeling better. Enjoy the beach run! I haven't done a lot of beach running - the last time was Nova Scotia, and I think the time before that was Mexico, where I did quite a lot of it. I found it challenging but great fun. No real pointers to share.

I enjoyed a good spin last night and it gave me lots of energy. Today I've been doing stuff around the house and we went for a hike, but DH wasn't feeling too well so we didn't ride. I did yoga and we did virtual training in the form of surfing slowtwitch.com and other sites to plan some future races :) Now we're off for dinner, which I'm excited about.

Big HELLO to everyone else and happy weekending!

Welcome back Laura, glad to hear from you and I'm with Nat, maybe something a little longer but still in the doable range would be good. Also, maybe something with a friend - like a challenge 10k (not a time challenge but one that gets you both out on the course).

Carrie - Beach runnign is a lot of fun. You're right, closer to the water is easier. However, running that close to the water can be a little damp at times though. Sometimes it's also fun to run without shoes while you're there. If you do decide to run in the soft sand then it is a little easier to run without shoes but I wouldn't recommend running in really soft sand - not fun even for the masochist in me.

Nat - Sorry that DH isn't feeling well but I bet you all had a great hike as the season starts to turn up there. The embassy was a lot of fun but a little loud. Neat to see all the folks there - even a few couples from school. In all, a decent time and a bit of fun pouring South African wine (and being asked how the wine was - I hadn't heard of the wine or grape before yesterday).

I had a blast of a ride this afternoon. If anyone is wondering - riding near Georgetown on a pleasant September afternoon is absolutely nuts! Still did over 27 miles today and just over 2 hours (lots of grind it out hills today). No land record today but did have a speed record - just a touch under 40 mph (I was speeding - glad the cops weren't in the area. ;) ).

Time to start winding down for tomorrow's run at church - about 7 hours total. 3 services: 9, 11:15, and 5 - couldbe a blast.

Have a great remainder of your weekends and happy trails,
Les

Okay, I'm not feeling real chatty today but I'm going to post what happened here and then maybe I'll get over it and move on. I went out for a fairly easy planned 30-40 miles turn around when I feel like it kind of ride. No pressure, not training for any races just keeping my fitness level up. I BONKED hard at around 13 miles. WTF? I fought my way home, and I mean fought. Nearly crashed at one point due to my own stupidity and failing body. Had to stop regularly just to sit and recover for a minute or two. And there were no shortcuts home so my ride was 26 miles. Half of them hard fought, heart wrenching nearly in tears on the side of the road miles.:mad::mad:

I'm taking a rest day tomorrow and heading up to watch a friend's last tri of the season and after that hang out with Mcgeiger and her DH. Hopefully that will straighten my head out. For now, I'm going to bed early.

Sorry you had a terrible ride today Robyn. Somehow it sounds like you definitely need a rest and you know what, there are days that nothing works even though you're dong something "simple." I hope your theraputic day tomorrow is successful.

Peace,
Les

Natasha

Robyn, hugs to you if you can use 'em. As Les says, sometimes you just run into one of "those days" where nothing seems right. Hope your day today is what the doctor ordered, and that watching the tri gives you some vicarious enjoyment and inspiration.

Les, did you get to sample the wine? :) After all, you needed to to be able to answer the questions from people about it! How was Georgetown nuts? Just really busy? I think I may have seen Georgetown very briefly in one of my DC trips a long time ago. It looks so neat in pics and video - would love to see more of it if I'm ever down that way. You were speeding - shocking! ;) Hope the 3 services went well.

I'm back from a fun run with the group. It's a lovely fall day - slightly overcast, not too hot, not too cold. I did about 8 miles. Some are going super long as they're training for fall marathons. I'll catch up with them later for coffee. DH is working today so I plan to do a bit of paperwork (yay! ;)), cook (I'm thinking chipotle macaroni and cheese and smoky squash bisque), and so on.

Hi, all! Haven't gotten much in the way of official workouts since mid-week, but I decided I'll get back to it when I can and I won't sweat it. Worked 12 hrs Friday, then went directly to the homecoming football game where both kids were marching in the band's halftime show. Lost the game, but the band was great! :D Saturday DD had a Novice Tennis Tournament and DS had a CC meet, so lots of schlepping around. Both did very well and were quite happy with their days. Homecoming dance was last night, so DH and I actually got to catch a movie (Ghost Town....we liked it) while the kids were gone. Lots of home maintenance stuff to do today. Hoping for a run in the AM.....

Robyn, what a lousy day you had! Sorry to hear it was such a rough ride. Any idea what precipitated it? Coming down with something, not enough sleep, stress? Any of those could be the culprit. A day of rest is probably an excellent idea. Hope the tri was fun!

Sounds like a really nice run for you, Natasha. Hope your paperwork goes smoothly and your kitchen time is fun!

Glad you had such a fun ride yesterday, Les. If you had lots of hills to grind up, I think speeding is a must on the way down! I am pretty sure it is a rule actually.....

Carrie, hope your beach run was fun. I have no tips on that as I live in the midwest and we don't believe in beaches.

Susan, Have a safe flight and a good trip to FL!

Hi to Kathy, Laura, and Tkay! Hope you are all getting in some good workouts and enjoying some cooler weather. Take care!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I'm not quite sure what caused yesterday's disaster. Although someone commented today that yesterday's air quality was bad so maybe that was it? Either way, I am feeling a bit better today and it was fun to watch my friend as she is one of the main people who got me into multi-sport. She had a fantastic race! It was a small one (about 300 athletes, all women) and as she ran by me coming into Transition 2 she yelled to me that she killed the bike and she did. And lunch with Mcgeiger and her DH after was lovely.

Laura, I owe you a call for lunch. This is the end of our fiscal year so can we wait until after October 1?

Natasha, today sounds like a perfect fall day for you.

Kathy, you've been crazy busy!

Les, riding in Georgetown has to be nuts. Just thinking about it frightens me!

Natasha
09-21-2008, 03:25 PM
Kathy, nice to hear from you. Did your kids enjoy the homecoming dance? Congrats to them on their good showing yesterday in their respective sports! Too funny about the Midwest "not believing in beaches".

Robyn, glad today has been a better day so far!

I'm back because I'm doing a bit of scouting for club events for 2009 and beyond. One thing that came up was Marine Corps. I know that sells out quickly and that it's huge (larger than I personally like but as this is a club event, my personal tastes shouldn't really play into it ;)). Plus there's something about MC that's very cool. Les, I know you did it in 2001 (and that that was understandably very emotional) - have you done it other times, too? What do you think of the race overall? I can look at marathonguide.com and other sites for a million perspectives, and if it's a serious possibility we'll of course do our research, but I also value a race report from someone I know. NO rush at all on this - we're just starting to think about options. Thanks! :)

Les - Wow! I didn't realize your program was that long. I like tending bar at parties.. you get to talk to a lot of people :) And 40 mph on your bike?? Living dangerously!

Laura - Welcome back! Good job on the run/walk. Let us know which race you choose!

Natasha - Sounds like you had a busy and enjoyable weekend. Thanks for mentioning slowtwitch.com.. I didn't know about that website. Any other running/biking/tri websites you can recommend? I have a friend that is doing the Marine Corps marathon this year.. and has done it several times before. He says it is a really fun race - lots of marching bands, etc. along the course. I'll try to get a more detailed report from him.

Robyn - Sorry to hear about your bummer ride. I agree that you probably need a few rest days and it sounds like you are planning to take them. Hope the rest of your weekend was good!

Kathy - Wow! Very busy.

I had a great time volunteering at the race. I started out helping with registration for the kids run. Then I went to the finish line to cheer along the racers and give out cards which were used for the awards ceremony. Overall, it really encouraged me to volunteer for local races if I will not be running in them. It takes a lot of work to put on a race!

I didn't get to go on a beach run because it was too hot by the time I woke up to run. However, I did get to go on a long beach walk :) I got in my 8 mi at home this evening. It went okay but my right knee & hip began to hurt near the end so I switched to the other side of the road (thought it might have had something to do with running on the same side of the road the whole time) and tried to run on the dirt as much as possible. I made sure to do some good stretching after my run! I am also icing right now for preventative maintenance.

Nat - pls don't use the "F" word just yet :-) I love fall, but am trying to extend summer as long as possible. Just Fri night, when DH & I were bouncin around the idea of a US-vacatoin-fall-marathon spot I proposed Marine Corps. DH has never been to DC. It's early, but that could be a possiblity for us. When does 09 reg open?

Laura - haven't heard from you in ages! How are you? Glad to see you picking up running again. Isn't funny how a 10K isn't exciting enough? Is DD still overseas? Oh, I'm sorry....we're supposed to be discussing running :-)

Kathy - a movie date night?! That sounds fab!

Newsomz - my sis doesn't have as good of an excuse as your sis :-) You definitely need to try beach running some time. You're in FL afterall!

Robyn - Your ride sounds crazy! Hope you can figure out the issues for the future.

Sat was a 20 mile run for me. I feel really great about getting in the miles, even tho the end was quite tough. I feel really fab through mile 15. 15-18 feels tough, but I can keep up my target pace. After 18 my hips feel like concrete. Hopefully just acclimating to the long distance will help.

I just spend the night at the opening networking reception -- and I'm an introvert :-) I survived, tho. Met some industry peers and it's all good. Probably won't run til Tues.

Driving by... long day and no run (not unexpected). Marine corps Marathon is a lot of fun and a TON of people. The crazy thing about Georgetown was all the people on the trail - it's a mixed use trail and there were tons of people out for strolls and folks out for leisurely rides yesterday. Lovely place to be later in the fall/early winter because the tourists are gone and the fab trails (C&O canal and bike trail) are nearly wide open for running and riding. Got a quick taste of the wine - it was a vintage called Pinotage. Not bad, kind of earthy, almost like a cross between a pinot noir and a cabernet/meritage. Fun talking to all the people too. The odd thing about the speed on the bike was I wasn't even paying attention, just grinding down the hill trying to outrun the car that was behind me (and I did). More tomorrow but for now...

To bed, in all I was out of the house almost 11 hours with about 70 minutes of driving and ~ 90 minutes of break where I did reading for class tomorrow. But a great day none the less.

Happy trails all and see you in the funnies,
Les

Just back from a 3.5 mile run, followed by a walk with the dog. Got out kind of late, so it was rather warm, but nice in the shade and there was a good breeze to keep things cool. Did some yoga early, too. We have the Scarecrow 5K coming up in a few weeks (part of a local fall festival) and the whole family is tentatively planning to do it. I say tentatively because I am slow to commit us to anything very far in advance these days due to the kids' schedules and stuff always seems to come up. But that's "The Plan" for now. :D

Susan, great job on your 20 miles and way to hang in there at the end! Surely it is just a matter of getting your body used to the longer distance again. Isn't it amazing how quickly we acclimate to less activity, but it takes so much longer to build up to more activity?

Carrie, I'm glad the volunteering went well. Sounds like a fun time! Nice work on your 8 miles, and hopefully the ice did the job.

Robyn, glad to hear yesterday was a better day!

Long day for you, Les! Nice that it was a good one.

Natasha, so your running club travels to other places to run together? That sounds like it would be a lot of fun! Did you just volunteer to check out other races, or do you have an official role in your club? I'm just curious how these clubs work.... :)

The laundry calls, so I am signing off for now!

Carrie and Les, thanks for the info on MCM!

Carrie, is the icing helping? I can definitely see that running on the same side of the road may not have helped matters. That can be an issue on roads and also on a track if you don't change direction sometimes. Harder to change direction on a road without going against the facing traffic "rule", but you could switch roads altogether if that's an issue. The volunteering sounds awesome!

Other sites as per your request... http://www.marathonguide.com; http://www.coolrunning.com (you probably know these already); and you could check out local sites for your area like Florida Running & Triathlon: http://www.flrunning.com. I use one or two provincial/national sites as well when I'm scouting local events.

Susan, nice job on your run! That would be cool if you guys did MCM. Not sure when registration opens for 2009... Les? Anyone? Soon after this year's race in late Oct., I would think, but don't know for sure. I hear you about fall. It's normally my favourite season but this year I'm not ready.

Kathy, I hope you are all able to do the Scarecrow 5k. With a name like that, how could it not be fun? Yes, our run club does out of town events every year or so. I went to Philly with them for the marathon a couple of years ago, and last year and the year before they did a relay though I didn't go with them. I am scouting because I'm club secretary - a couple of others on the exec will probably look into it as well, and of course members are free to suggest events too.

Les, Georgetown sounds fun! What a busy day for you yesterday. I hope you had a quieter day today and a chance to run or ride.

Today... will be a spinning day. Should already be out there riding on the road but yeah, I'm not. Given how early it gets dark now, I'll be spinning indoors. That's okay, though. :) I also should fit in yoga.

Oh yeah - speaking of events: if we are going to do a 2009 VRB relay or event, we should probably start thinking about it soon, before many VRBs plan other events and have no room left! Otherwise, we can just defer the discussion and think about 2010. I'm good with that too :)

Take care, everyone!

Natasha

Have a wonderful evening, runfolk!

I checked the Marine Corps Marathon site and the pre-registration (on-site registration in Arlington) was April 29th this year. I know those who deferred their entry from this year to next year will have to reconfirm in February or shortly thereafter. My guess is the registration won't open up until March or April again.
Les, Georgetown sounds fun! What a busy day for you yesterday. I hope you had a quieter day today and a chance to run or ride.
Quieter day today - classes were good. Not much other time to get out for a run or ride today though. I'm going away Friday afternoon through Saturday evening for a class retreat from school so I'm having to push through some things that are due early next week this week. Maybe tomorrow afternoon will be better for a ride though. If nothing else it will be back to Fall weather (not in the middle 80s again).

Happy trails all,
Les

Thanks for the welcome back everyone. I ended up doing a 2/3 of sprint triathlon workout on Saturday, by run/walking 3.5 miles and swimming 1500. Yesterday I got 50 minutes in on my spin bike.

Newsomz I used to have that problem with banked roads and creating ankle pain. I think it is wise to switch it up if it is safe to do so.

Susan DD is back in the States for now, but she is heading to Sydney in February to study abroad for 5 months there.

Robyn I definitely have those bonk days too. More than that, my DH, DSS and DS, who are all serious competitive athletes have them too and you just need to forget them and move on. Just let me know when lunch works for you.

Kathy I am envious that you even have the chance to do a family 5k. I am the only "runner" in the family. DH and DS are swimmers and run only as a means to an end.

Natasha I think there are fewer runs like you described in the fall/winter. I know of some in the summer, and realistically, maybe that is something to shoot for.

I need to get back to work so hi to all that I missed.

Robyn1007

Carrie the volunteering sounds fun!

Natasha I'm pretty sure Catharine from this bb (not around a whole lot though) has done the Marine Corps maybe you could pm her for more info. Your spin sounds fantastic.

Susan an introvert? I'm shocked! I saw a woman with a 2007 Ironman Wisconsin Finisher's hat on at the tri Sunday and thought of you.

Les I agree, what the heck is up with the weather, it's been in the 80s here, I want fall!!!!

Well, I did a strength swim workout yesterday. I'm really growing to love that combo. I felt stronger and faster in my swim after last week's masters tips so I think maybe I'll go up for that every other week or so for a few more pointers even though it wasn't the best. Guess if I can't hire my own swim coach I can't be too choosy. I am a bit frustrated right now as the scale has stopped moving down but I think maybe I'm in another muscle addition cycle with the strength training so I'm trying to keep that in mind.

And the best news of all! Loveland (http://www.skiloveland.com) ski area is scheduled to start making snow TOMORROW!!!! :D:D:D:D

Hi everyone. I started us off and then never came back. I'm guilty of feeling like I don't have time to post anything meaningful, so I don't post at all. Silly, I know.

I did not get in that run over the weekend. I ended up feeling super, super tired. So I napped instead. ;) I did run three miles yesterday--steady and easy. It was hard getting going, but I warmed up nicely. Today is a yoga class.

Carrie - Sorry about your cat. I must have missed the news. :( I work as a freelance writer in advertising. I have a home office, so I pretty much set my own hours. Still, it's feast or famine with my schedule sometimes.

Newsomz - Great going on the volunteering. I'm glad you got in your mileage even if you didn't get to do it on the beach. Hope the icing does the trick.

Susan - Great job on the long run. I'm also impressed by a fellow introvert getting out there and meeting new people--almost as great an accomplishment as the 20 miles in my book. ;)

Les - You are one busy man. I continue to be impressed that you get in those rides/runs with all you have going on.

Laura - Welcome. Sounds like you're really an old pro who's just getting back up to speed again. Good for you. I also am back to running after a summer respite (and accompanying weight gain). Keep up the good work.

Robyn - Sorry to hear about the bonking, but it sounds like you're past it already. Glad the swimming and strength training is coming along. And with SNOW on the horizon, I bet all things in your world are looking brighter than ever.

Hello to all I missed.

Kathy B

A little over 2.5 miles for me today. The rest of my workout today will consist of marathon housework. I didn't get much done yesterday, because DD called me as I was going in to an afternoon meeting at work to announce that she had a tennis meet after school (NOT on the calendar!) I raced over there after the meeting, and I did get to see her play. They didn't finish until almost 6 PM, though, so supper plans went right out the window. Thank goodness for leftovers in the frig! DD has another meet tonight (I think they are making up all the rainouts), so I have to get everything else done early.

As I was mapping out my run, I found this article on the Mapmyrun website about donating old medals, and I thought I would share. What a great idea!
There is a link in the article to the organization that accepts them.
Medals for Mettle (http://running.about.com/b/2008/09/17/donate-your-race-medals.htm)

Tkay, naps are great! Your body knows what it needs.

Robyn, does the swim/strenth combo involve doing weights, then swimming, or are you doing some kind of strength workout in the water?

Actually, Laura, we are a hodgepodge of sports enthusiasts, but we don't get too stressed over a run called the Scarecrow 5K. :p It is all for fun and it is a pretty small race. I am sure DS hopes to place very well, but the rest of us just plod along. As long as we are moving, I figure it is all good. Good job on your workouts!!

Hope your spin and yoga went well, Natasha. And Les, I hope you manage to work in a ride soon.

I do strength in the weight room and then swim. I'm lucky that I workout at one of the nicest rec centers in the city and we have a really good weight room including quite new machines and a wide variety of free weights.

KathyB - Good luck to your dd at her meet(s). Happy cleaning! I'll check out the article you posted (not that I have a bunch of metals, but...)
Robyn - Weights followed by swimming sounds like a killer workout. You must be spent afterwards.

I typically just want to eat everything. Some days I'm close to gnawing off my arm as I drive home. It's part of why I don't like where that masters class is, it's so freaking far with way too many poor choices between swimming and healthy food at home. :p I've done a bunch of reading lately about how more calories are burned with cardio following weights so I'm giving it a go.

Busy day today, or at least in most places. Neat exchange about the swimming and weights. I'm with Robyn, when I swam I always was hungry coming out of the pool - can't figure out why either. Like the discussions about volunteering - makes me want to go out and do something like that too. In my copious free time... ;)

No run but then I kind of figured I wouldn't and I felt the need to keep kind of quiet day here. Nursing that tooth that I had the root canal and filling in this summer, it feels like the tooth may be ready to break (I think I grind my teeth - ok, LW says I grind my teeth) and I'm not feeling great because of it (not sleeping well). So I decided to hit up the blood drive and donated a pint of blood. That, of course took me out of my workouts. Trying to get ready for the remainder of the things going on this week - and getting ready to perform a piece of scripture for class tomorrow (I have to do the reading, by heart, that I'm preaching on in November).

But for now, off to the showers. Take care all and have a great hump day.

Les, I think I've seen some stuff about the way exercise in water affects your body temperature and what that does to your metabolism and hunger. Never believe it until I started swimming this summer. I can ride for 3 hours and not feel as urgently hungry as I do when I've swam for 30 minutes.

I meant to ride this evening but my mom and I got into a long conversation making it too late to get out on the bike with the shorter days. Oops.

Susan - Great job on the 20 mi! I keep telling myself the same thing about acclimating to the long distance.. but I'm only up to 10 mi this week :)

Kathy - The Scarecrow run sounds like a fun event! I saw a 10pm Tower of Terror run that I thought would be a lot of fun.. but it is on a weekend when I had plans :( Too bad! A Halloween even sounds like fun.

Natasha - Yes, the icing is helping! Amazing. On my run last night there was no pain.. so that is good. I believe it was my IT band acting up. Thanks for all the websites, too. Some are new to me! I think we should defer the VRB relay to 2010 only because my 2009 is going to be packed! DBF & I are going to travel/snowboard in Europe for 3 months.. Then I hope to start nursing school (pending acceptance) :)

Les - Sounds like you've been crazy busy again! I hope you can squeeze a workout in once you're feeling better.

Laura - Good job on the running, swimming and spinning!

Robyn - Sounds like a good workout. When I was running at the park yesterday there was a swim meet going on... It made me want to be swimming (or at least watching the meet) :)

TKay - How was yoga? I've been doing random yoga poses as my stretching for the past few days. The warrior poses are just great for stretching out my legs!

I got out for a short, 30 min, recover run yesterday. Nothing too spectacular but I was sure to switch sides and run on some dirt!

Happy trails!

I think I am hungry no matter what type of workout I do, or perhaps I am just always hungry? :)

Robyn, I am going to try your strength cardio session this weekend. We belong to a great club that has a wonderful salt/chlorinated outdoor pool -- noticed how I mentioned outdoor, so keep your snow north of the Palmer Divide would you? :p

Les, sounds like you have a busy day planned with your memorization and getting ready for class. The road will always be out there for you.

TKay, I am having been running on/off for awhile and even ran a marathon with Aggie94 a few years back, but it has been more off for awhile.

Newsomz, I am glad you are feeling better.

Kathy Don't you just love those last minute calls for things that weren't on the calendar? Good job on getting your run in still.

I completed 2.5 miles on the treadmill last night with walking 3 minutes running 3 minutes. I so did not want to go, but I knew DH was at the club swimming so off I went. I am glad I did, but my hips are a little tight today. Not enough stretching I am sure.

Laura, too funny about always being hungry! Glad you got in the run. Does your DH still swim a lot?

Kathy, ah, yes - those unexpected things... nice work fitting in the run regardless! Medals for Mettle sounds cool but I couldn't part with any of my medals, at least not yet. :o They're all hung up on a bulletin board beside my desk in the home office and I admit I love having them there. Maybe if I had lots more medals, I'd be able to part with some.

Les, busy day for you yesterday and good on you to give blood. Did you run or ride today?

Robyn, I hear you on swimming making you hungry. I find the same thing. Weights and swimming - you go, girl!

TKay, sounds like a good run. How was yoga?

Carrie, good to hear that the icing helped. Your Europe excursion sounds fabulous!! Have you thought much about where you'll spend the most time, or will you take it as it comes?

Susan, I bet you're crazy busy in Orlando - hope it's going well.

I took yesterday off save for yoga but today I had a great run. I did about 5 miles through town and felt very strong. Now to stretch well and get on with the evening! I also spotted a new Thai restaurant while I was out so am looking forward to trying it. Also looking forward to seeing Run Fatboy Run one of these evenings!

Happy trails, all!

Laura, good job on the run. I'll do what I can with the snow but it doesn't look like anything is going to hit us for awhile. :(

Natasha, I love those workouts where you feel invincible.

I got out for a quick hour ride tonight. Short and sweet but it's all the light I had. It won't be long until week night rides are all on the trainer. Happily got on the scale this morning to find that I'm finally dropping weight again. Down 3 more pounds. :D

Drive by.. didn't realize how late it had gotten and I need to get some sleep.

Great run to Susan. Good workout to you newsomz, I'm glad that the ice did the trick and that the 30 minute run went well.

Good workouts to the rest of you, Laura, Robyn, and Natasha. It was definitely a busy day because of classes, fiddling with my tooth (which - for the most part) appears to be staying. The dentist has tried to reshape the remainder of the real tooth to force my bite onto a different part of the tooth in order to keep the pressure off part of the tooth (and prevent fracturing in the future). But with everything (a flopped reading too - dropped a portion of the text and couldn't get it back) else I decided that I'll ride log tomorrow afternoon after packing for my retreat for this coming weekend.

To bed and wishing you all good thoughts and wonderful runs etc.

Run by for me. Yoga the other day was fantastic. I really feel great after some good stretching. Off day yesterday to do some volunteer work at the school. Have a little one home sick today, so I won't make it to the gym.

Robyn - I hadn't heard that about the cardio/weight connection. I may have to give that a try.
Les - Hope your tooth problems settle down. I find tooth issues to be such a, well, pain.
Nat - Please post a review of Run Fatboy Run after you view it. I want to see it.
Laura - I get that tight hip thing sometimes too. I've been doing yoga and it really helps. The classes make me do the stretching I simply won't do on my own.
Newsomz - I did a 5K on dirt once and was very disappointed at how dingy my shoes were afterward. ;)
KathyB - How did the meets go? And is your house now spotless?

Hello to all I missed--Susan, Aggie, Legolas (you around?), Seathyme (are you around?) and all the rest. Have a great Thursday.

Tkay, the key is weights then cardio. There is debate about this of course but there's debate about everything.

TKay, sorry to hear one of your little guys isn't feeling well. Hope he feels better soon! On a brighter note, isn't yoga fabulous?

Les, hope you enjoyed your long ride and that the retreat is awesome!

Robyn, great job on the 3 pounds! How is your PF these days, BTW? Do you think you'll be able to try a short run sometime soon?

We plan to mountain bike early this evening, while there's still light... though we may end up using the road bikes instead. We'll see.

Hi to everyone else :)

No, my foot was doing better and then flared up in the last week. I think I'm going to go buy a Strassburg Sock in the next week.

Good luck, Robyn... I have a colleague who had good results with the Strassburg Sock. I think he may also have gotten orthotics but can't recall what role (if any - I'm not a huge orthotics proponent at the moment) they played in his recovery.

Thanks for the mention of the Strassburg Sock. I didn't know what it was, so I googled it. Interesting.

Robyn, thanks for the info on the correct order of weights, then cardio.
Nat, I think the little one is on the mend, thanks. There's a big event at school tomorrow and he'll be devastated if he misses it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll be there. And yes, yoga is divine.

Rain coming down... not complaining but riding in the rain may not be as much fun as running... Off to check temps and get out before packing for the weekend.

eta I got out and ran in barely misting weather. Did just over an hour while being overdressed (short sleeves in 62 degree conditions - who'd have thunk?) and definitely not enought moisture to cool me off correctly. I'm getting jazzed for this weekend - it should be a great time, just too bad that it's only about a day (not a day and a half like last year). But more on our plates this year so...

Have a great Friday and I'll see you on Saturday evening.

Happy trails,
Les
