Hope you don't mind if I start, Les. I know you hinted that you might do it, but I am about to head out the door and wanted to report a good 3 mile run this AM along with some early morning yoga. I am off to do a few errands, in to work for a few hours of office work, and then DH and I are going to the kids football game tonight to watch the band. (We may watch the game, too.... :p).

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend! :)

PS: I added a pretty chatty post to the end of last week's thread last night, and Kathy (ktg) had a post after that, so be sure to check out the old thread!

Thanks for starting Kathy, I'm not bent on starting a thread -- ever. Especially when you get a run in to start the week. I'll have to go back and re-read the thread from last week but remember (vaguely) reading it yesterday.

Well, I fibbed - I rode instead of running. I needed to go to the bank and with the holiday it would have taken me 2 hours to drive there (it's only 13 miles round trip). It took me just over an hour to ride there and back. Chilling for the weekend and probably will go to the 9/11 memorial at the Pentagon (I need to go there for lots of reasons).

Hope all are well and have a good weekend.

Happy trails,
Les

Hi everyone!
Yesterday DH and I went out for a bike ride and I finally managed the 15 miles I wanted to do on Tuesday. I "layered" because it was so chilly earlier in the week (same temp when we went out, same time of day), but I was dying from the heat by the end of the ride. It's so difficult to judge these kinds of things in the transitional seasons. :) This morning I went on a quick 30 minute trail run.

KathyB, this was my third time on jury duty in the past 5 years. I wouldn't mind doing it, but I live in a rural area and it's an awful lot of unaccustomed effort to make the trip into downtown Pittsburgh (and arrive by 8:30am!). I'd be interested to see, if you do go next week, if your experience is similar. A friend of mine served on the same day in CA and her experience was quite different. I actually wrote a document about it (because I was needed something to do during the day, and so I can read about what to expect the next time I serve and not rely on my memory) and if you're interested let me know. It's in a Word (.doc) form.

I have a feeling that, as usual, your weekend will be packed... ;)

Kathy (the other one...), hope that you had a nice holiday and enjoyed yourself at the wedding.

Oops, just got a yell from DH asking if I was packing yet for the lake house... I tend to lose myself when I get online.

Nat, it looks like we will both be near water this weekend. Will you be looking at pretty colored leaves, or is that over up there? It should be near peak in the mountains here. Have a great time!

Okay, it looks as though I really have to get going.

Hope that you all enjoy your weekends (long ones, perhaps, with Columbus Day on Monday???) :D

Hi to Les, Carrie, Susan, Robyn (enjoy your visit with Mom!), Julie, and a welcoming HI to Meg!

Hey gang, it's been a good Saturday hasn't it? At least speaking for myself.

Vicci - Isn't it odd how the weather has changed over the past couple days. I'm like you, the other day I wore a long sleeve shirt when I went out to ride remembering how chilly it was coming back home. This time it was pretty oppressive and I was like you, starting to overheat. I'd be interested in hearing about your jury duty reflections I may be serving soon - my first time ever on a civilian court (military court martials don't count in my book - but they're interesting). I hope you have fun at the lake.

I ran today  for the first time in I can't remember how long. Ended up at 10.5 miles (more or less). Felt pretty good but was starting to get achy hamstrings by the end. Definitely need to get back into running again although my biking has been helpful to keep my fitness level up, just not the right muscle usage for running.

Hope all are well and I'm looking forward to a holiday on Monday. Bet Natasha and DH are looking forward to Thanksgiving too.

Happy trails,
Les

Well, we actually did watch the football game last night since we were there anyway to see the band. :D It was a great game and our HS came from behind to win by one point in the last quarter. It is so nice to see them do well (they are having a very good year), because over the last 3 years they had only won 2 games. Total. Today DS had his CC conference meet, and as he was hoping, he PR'd at 17:27 for eighth place. He was very happy! This evening we all went out for our anniversary dinner, and we had such a nice time. I really treasure those moments when we are all just sitting around the table and talking about anything and everything.

Vicci, I would definitely be interested in hearing about your JD. Unfortunately, when I called the "hotline" last night to see if I was still supposed to report, the numbers called did not include mine. Darn! I hope I get called again sometime. Good job on your bike ride and trail run. Before long, you won't even remember how it felt to be dying from the heat. ;)

Great run, Les! Your running muscles may be a little underused, but it is a good thing to have both running AND biking muscles getting a workout, right? I hope your Monday holiday is very relaxing for you!

I did yoga early this AM, then went to the CC for weights, abs (believe it or not!) and about 12 minutes on the rowing machine. Of course I got a fair amount of running in at the CC meet, too, so not too bad for today.

I really have no business being on line, since I still need to work on the lesson I am leading for my Sunday School class tomorrow. Over the past year or so, I have intermittently led a series of discussions over the book Prayer: Does it Make any Difference? by Phillip Yancey. (A GREAT book!) Tomorrow is the final section. Then I can relax! Guess I better sign off and get busy.

Take care everyone!

Good morning everyone! We went to Miami for the weekend to watch the UCF v. Miami football game (DBF went to UCF), they lost, but not by as much as expected so DBF was still happy. :) My teams won (University of Florida, and the Devil Rays!) so it was a good sports weekend for me. Got to run when we got home yesterday and I am up to 1.4 miles! I've been google-mapping different routes in my neighborhood or varying distances so I have new places to run to as I increase my distance.

Kathy - Congratulations to your DS for his CC meet! That is a wonderful time! And congratulations on your anniversary, I am glad you had a nice evening out...un-rushed, relaxing at the dinner table, talking. Such great moments!

Vicci - Sounds like you had a nice weekend biking and trail running! I know what you mean about layering in cold weather. When I go skiiing I start out the day in all kinds of layers, but pretty soon I end up in just a tank top under my ski jacket because it gets so hot!

Les - Glad you had a nice run this weekend, and a nice ride too! Isn't it great when you can get some good exercise *and* take care of an errand in less time than it would take to drive?

Happy Monday everyone! Have a fantastic day!

Happy Monday, runners!

Nat - Happy Thanksgiving! I have a hunch you're hiking or doing something else active on the holiday weekend

Les - has it really been that long since you've run? I've lost track. All the riding is great, though.

Kathy - that is so awesome about the CC meet! Congrats to your DS! And happy anniversary (ours was yesterday, too -- lots of autumn weddings around here, I guess)

MegMeg - Glad you had a good weekend. The run map websites are an awesome invention, aren't they? Have you officially signed up for your 5K race?

I had a great weekend. Didn't run on Thurs or Fri, due to bad schedule mgmt on my part! But had very good runs Sat (6 miles) and Sun (10 miles). This is my taper week, so I'm planning on easy runs Tu, Wed, Thurs, maybe with some light fartleks thrown in.

Les - has it really been that long since you've run? I've lost track. All the riding is great, though.
Since my race at the end of August I've probably run less than 10-12 times in 6 weeks and definitely nothing as long as 10+ miles. Hard to believe isn't it? I'm definitely happy about my riding stints though - it will be helpful as the season changes too.

Have a great taper week. Do you have a link where we can "track" you in your race? I bet that would be a fun thing to do.

Meg - Thanks and it sounds like you had a good run. That's great that you were able to map out a bunch of runs around your neighborhood to start building your mileage.
Kathy B - Definitely congrats to DS! Your book study sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe sometime when I have time for personal reading I'll take a look at the book (by the way, I have some opinions about prayer as you might expect). Balanced workouts have been good - a first in who knows how long. I hope that you have a good running week - it sounds like you might get a chance to run some.

I had a productive day off today - now I need to read Augustine (he's terrible too). Got my federal amended tax return completed -- a good thing. Got my amended/extended state return 95% done (still have a question about what we've done here...). On top of that, fixed my bike (catastrophic failure of the front tube yesterday) and rode for an hour. Now, back to the grindstone and reading to do before tomorrow. Hope all had a good day off and I'll eb seeing you.

Happy trails,
Les

Hi everyone!

Les, It sounded as though you enjoyed your day off, and got some things done. :) Congrats on the 10+ mile run, and I hope that the hamstrings are feeling better (esp after the bike ride earlier today!).

KathyB Happy Anniversary! Hope that you got the final section of your lesson completed and can relax now. ;)

Same Happy Anniversary wishes to you, Susan! I've noticed a definite lean toward autumn/ early winter weddings in the past 15 years or so (as opposed to the traditional June ones). Good luck in getting prepared for this weekend!

Meg sounds as though you had an enjoyable weekend! I love playing around with google maps, even though it drives me nuts when I notice errors (since there's really no way to report them). Do you use "map my run"?

And speaking of mapping, I enjoy running on the back roads while we are at the lake house so I went out today for an extended run. I ended up running most of the time, only "fast walking" up the worst of the hills, and was out of 63 minutes (this could be a record). However, I went to map my run and I went 3.94 miles. I want so badly to crack that 4 mile mark!

DH and I used our atv on Sunday and went with friends for a ride in the mountains. We only use our atv to plow the driveway and ride to the back of our property, so this was an adventure. We found this after a rather hair-raising descent:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce32b3127ccec50f075188fb00000070O00AZNG7Ro4cuG IPbz4S/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

And it was "peak" for leaves there, as evidenced by:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce32b3127ccec50ec861694800000040O00AZNG7Ro4cuG IPbz4S/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

Tomorrow we have another bike ride scheduled, as the weather is to turn cool and possibly rainy near the end of the week and I want to cram as much outdoor time in as possible before then. :D

Vicci What beautiful photos! It looks like you are enjoying a gorgeous autumn in PA.

Happy Anniversary wishes to Susan and Kathy!

Welcome Back to running, Les. Wishing you a strong return to the road- it sounds like you are well on your way.

And hello to Meg! Waves to Nat, Robyn (how was the weekend with your Mom?) and everyone...

Running continues in fits and starts. I had 2 completely PF pain-free days at the end of last week. Got in a good tempo run on Thursday, took a rest day Friday.

Bought a Strassburg Sock on Friday. I wore it for 3 nights before giving it up and returning to my trusty friend, FrankenFoot. The SS made me crazy- I hated having my foot encased, enclosed, and unable to breathe. The seams bit into my skin as my leg naturally swelled during the night and I woke trying to tear the thing off. Ultimately it just didn't feel like I was getting the same support and stretch as with the splint. So I've made my peace with FrankenFoot and we're back together again.

Saturday was a planned 8 miler. Ohmigosh. I drove to Green Lake (about 3 miles from home) about 7 am, just as it was getting light. The scene was primordial- the lake was shrouded in a thick mist, geese gliding silently in and out of view. Twice I saw a Blue Heron rise up from the shore, like some Celtic god. I kept expecting Morgan Le Fay to appear in the mist, accompanied by naked Picts. It was really cool. As I ran the mist lifted to reveal cloudless skies. A perfect autumn day.

Run started well, but by mile 6 or so my left hip was aching- overcompensation for the PF probably. But I was happy to get 6 miles in, so I walked the rest. Brendan and I registered for the Seattle Marathon Half later that day :)

Yesterday was a good 4 mile tempo on the treadmill and core work I work early today, so this afternoon it's to the gym for weights and elliptical.

Hi everyone!

I had a very nice weekend with my mom including some shopping for new gear. This afternoon I'm going to go get fitted for new running shoes (can't purchase until tomorrow but have the time today for the process.) After that I'm having a small medical procedure done so today is a rest day. Sunday I did a long strength training session and yesterday I swam. I've started my new program so I guess this means I'm committed. Here's my race schedule for next season:

June: Danskin Triathlon, sprint distance
July: My Way or the Tri Way, aqua bike duathlon
August: Harvest Moon, olympic distance triathlon
September: Buffalo Bicycle Classic, century ride
September: Tri Babes, sprint triathlon

I think I've been bitten by the bug. ;)

But, before I hit that, ski season is HERE!!!!!!! Arapahoe Basin officially opens TOMORROW!!!!! You might imagine how freaking excited I am. :D

Vicci - Beautiful pictures, the lake looks wonderful. And starting to get that nice Fall look too. I hope that you get a good bike ride in before the weather gets yucky. I bet you're hoping for some decent weather too.
KValley - Sorry that the SS didn't work for you but at least you have FF to make up for the difference. Can you return SS? great job on your 6 miler too. Nice description of a primordial scene - I can really relate and wish there was something like that around here. Hopefully your hip behaves itself.
Robyn - nothing like a few races next summer. It certainly looks like you've been bitten by the bug. I hope that you recover quickly from your procedure.

I ran today - one of my classmates approached me as we were getting out of class and asked if I was running today (I believe it was like now). I told him I planned on it and he really was thinking about right then. I didn't have any running gear on hand. He only wanted to run about 2-3 miles (a good start) and I wanted a little more so I came home, changed, ran to meet him at school (2 miles) and ended up with about 65 minutes of running (about 21 with him). Felt good but my hamstrings were singing the blues at the start but by the finish things were ok.

Tomorrow... who knows. But for now - time for studies so until later...
Happy trails,
Les

Kathy - Happy Anniversary! And great job on all the workouts/activities. You definitely make me tired!

MegMeg - I know - wasn't the UF/LSU game incredible!!! I went and had such a blast. Of course, all my yelling helped the team win ;) Great job on the run! Keep out there and you are sure to improve. I love google-mapping routes, too. Have you seen mapmyrun.com?? Very handy.

Susan - Happy Anniversary! And great job on the weekend runs. How are your runs going so far this week?

Vicci - Thanks for sharing the pictures! I wish we got color like that down here.. Unfortunately, the leaves only turn brown and fall off :(

So I've made my peace with FrankenFoot and we're back together again
Kvalley - you really made me laugh with this line!!!! The run around the lake sounds very cool.. I love running at sunrise - it is such a special/pretty time of day.

Robyn - Yay! New shoes are always fun. Good luck on the medical procedure.. I am always really nervous beforehand not matter what it is - even getting blood drawn :o Your race schedule looks like tons of fun - I am jealous.. You've just inspired me to create my own! OMG about A-Basin being open. I wish I was there - are they getting snow or making it?

Les - Great job on getting a run in. I'm thinking your running muscles were getting jealous of your riding muscles :)

Okay, so I don't think I reported my long run from last week on the last thread (if I did, forgive me). Originally I was planning my run for Friday afternoon/evening so I could get it out of the way before the jam-packed weekend began. However, I woke up Friday morning and decided I should head out before work instead.. Luckily my job is flexible and I had built up some comp time earlier in the week. I did a nice 12 mi run around town (including a jog past work) and got into work by 10:30am. It was nice and cool and I had plenty of water stops on the way. Friday afternoon I was very glad I did the morning run as it got sunny! It was nice and overcast for my entire run :)

Today, I did a track workout with my IRL running buddy. We did repeats of 1000m - me trying to hit a target time of 5 min. I was pretty much on target for all the repeats and it felt good to get my legs going that fast! My standard 45 min run is scheduled for Thursday and I am hoping it will cool down a little by then.

Happy trails, everyone!!!!

KValley, the description of your early run was just lovely. I have tried a few times, but I simply cannot awaken that early in the morning! And if I am, I wouldn't dare to try to run... ;)

Glad that you had a good weekend with your Mom, Robyn. I have to find the time to get some new running shoes soon, too.

Les, good run yesterday! We need to get them in when we can at this time of year, right?

Carrie, nice 12-mile run around town... geez, I have far to go... I must run slower than everyone else (not prepping for a race, plus all of the hills which I try to run up but usually cannot) because if I were to try a 12-miler, I'd be out for 3 hours! I must locate Clif Shots... :)

DH and I did go out on the bikes yesterday and it was positively gorgeous. Warm, too-- I regretted not wearing shorts for possibly the last time this year.

Since I had an hour-long run the previous day and my hip flexors were a bit painful, I decided to bike for only 12 miles. Well, at 9.5 I almost stopped but pushed to 10. I probably shouldn't have done this because, as the afternoon progressed, I felt shin splints coming on. How fun-- both hip flexors were singing, as were the shins! Then we went to a hockey game last night and walking the hill to the Arena, plus up and down the concrete steps to our pre-peanut gallery seats... oy. Both areas do feel better this morning, but they still are letting me know not to overdo it two days in a row any more.

Today is to be our last nice day for quite a while, so I'm off to scrape more paint. Are you all jealous???? :p

Happy Hump Day to everyone!

Quiet-ish day...

Carrie - Good run this past weekend and even better hitting your intervals today. Hope your Thursday run is as productive.
Vicci - Sorry that your hip flexors aren't feeling right tonight after your hour run yesterday. Hopefully the pain passes quickly. Scraping paint on an nice day... no thank you. ;)
Robyn - Nice shoes.

Even though my hamstrings are feeling much better today, I took the day off. I think I just need to keep working through the tightness - a definite sign that I'm not running as much as I have been in the past. Today I laid a little low and skipped my workout (thought I might). It was preaching day in class - I preached and was taped for my sermon that I'm preaching in November. It wasn't the best thing I've ever done but I wasn't too disappointed with it. Still, I'm going to revise it all over again. Tomorrow, I'll go running with my friend again - I think we're going to try to make our running event twice a week for now.

Hope the downside of the week goes well for all and happy trails and warmth to those who might need it.

Did a bit of yoga yesterday. Today was weights and 30 min on the EB at the CC. Working tomorroow, so won't have anything official to report.

Glad you had a quiet day, Les. I could use one of those myself. Sunday may be looking good.... Hope the day off was good for the hamstrings!

That's quite a race schedule, Robyn. It really ought to keep you motivated, eh? :D

Vicci, I think you and I must run about the same pace! I have had the same thoughts about the over 10mile runs that are often reported here. :o Good job on your 10mile ride, and I hope a little rest gets everything back to normal. I don't think scraping paint counts as resting though....

Carrie, great job on your long run AND on your repeats. Nice to have some flexibility with your work that lets you get in such a good run!

Kvalley, your Saturday run sounds like it was lovely. I always get excited when I see a blue heron. There are a few around our area, but sighting them is rare, maybe once every other year or so I catch a glimpse. Glad to hear you and Frankenfoot worked things out. ;) Hope your foot is better.

Off to bed. Have to be up and ready for work in a few short hours. Have a good rest of the week, all!

Newsomz - your run sounds awesome! I bet the weather's great for running this time of year

Vicci - You're right. I *am* jealous of the house painting :-)

Kathy - I think everyone around here thinks everyone else is faster than them!

Robyn - What kind of shoes are those? I get all the numbers mixed up. I was running in Asics the past few years. They were a motion control model. My toes were happy, but they rubbed on my ankles. Weird.

Had a really great run yesterday. It rained all day long til just when all my meetings wrapped up. Great timing! About 35 minutes. Felt really good and smooth.

Just wanted to wish everyone a good weekend.

Robyn -yay for the lovely shoes! I hope you are feeling better and allow yourself time to rest and heal before tackling the trails, pool and gym again. Your race schedule rocks!

Susan- so glad the skies cleared for your run. I seem to be having the opposite luck- just as I leave work in the evenings, the downpours begin. Ah well, it IS Seattle...

Carrie, you make that 12 miler sound so effortless. I am inspired!

Les and Vicci, I'm glad you took time off to rest and let those muscle fibers heal and strengthen. I wish you long, strong runs this weekend!

Kathy Good on you for doing yoga. I know I must recommit myself to practice- I am feeling so tight and I know the core work is crucial to continued good hip and back strength. With my work schedule it's just too hard (and too expensive) to attend class at a studio here, so it's up to me to get motivated to do my self-practice more than 1x/week. I had an incredible ashtanga instructor for the 2 yrs we were in New Zealand and I reached yoga heights I never thought I'd attain, but have let it all fall away in the months since we've returned stateside. I have the intention, now just to work on the habit.

Meg and Nat Good wishes to you, two- have a lovely weekend, all.

A long day of work ahead , but at least it's (our) Friday. Woke up at 4:45, at the gym by 5:30, ran 6 miles (woo hoo!) and did some core work. My work day doesn't begin until noon, but I'm hosting a wine tasting from 5-9, so that's a fun bit to anticipate (tonight's theme: Iberia- we just got in a shipment of Spanish and Portuguese wines :) ) I'm icing my arch at the moment, then a bit of housecleaning and rest before I'm off and running again.

I feel a cold tickling my throat and nose- it's been on the rampage at work and Brendan was laid low a couple of weeks ago, but so far I've avoided the current plague. A double helping of echinacea and zinc today. Rest tomorrow.

Susan- I haven't officially signed up for my race yet, but I'll probably do it this week. My BF is probably going to run it too and so is my good friend.....she does triathlons though so I told her she can wait for me, the slow poke hehe, at the finish line. Glad you had a good run this week! Do you normally run after work or in the morning?

Vicci - Thanks for mentioning map my run! What a fun site. :) Your photos are beautiful.....the leaves don't really change down here. How are your hip flexors and shins feeling?

KValley - I laughed at your frankenfoot comment. When I broke my femur I was non-weight bearing for 9 weeks so I had a lot of swelling from the accident, surgery, and not really being able to move it. That combined with my surgery scars and staples earned my leg a new nickname - Frankenleg. :) Your run at Green Lake sounds beautiful! And 6 miles is wonderful. I am excited for the day I can run 3 hehe. Have fun at the wine tasting tonight, I love Spanish and Portuguese wines.

Les - It's nice that you have a friend at school to run with. Is your sermon in November going to be your first one? (sorry, you have probably already talked more about your schooling in the past). How are your hamstrings today?

Robyn - Hooray ski season has officially begun! :) I like the new running shoes you got. How are you feeling today from your medical procedure? I hope you feel better soon! I think you have definitely been bitten by the racing bug. It seems like that happens a lot hehe. My friend did her first triathlon the first weekend in October and she is doing another one a week from this Saturday.

Carrie - You were at the LSU/UF game?! I'm jealous! :p I bet it was so much fun! There is no place quite like The Swamp. Good job on your 12 mile run! Thanks for mentioning map my run too! I'd not heard of it before, but it's a great site.

Kathy - Yoga sounds wonderful! Do you practice at home or at a studio?

I went to yoga on Tuesday...almost wasn't going to go because I was extra tired (didn't sleep well for 3-4 nights in a row), but I am glad I went because I felt a lot better afterward. Last night DBF and I went to the climbing gym, got in some good bouldering and top roping. Though when I doing this one overhang boulder problem I think I pulled a muscle at the base of my neck/right should because it is definitely angry with me today. I've been putting heat on it and slowly stretching the area. I work from home Wednesdays and Thursdays so I've been able to run in the mornings, which has been such a treat. The weather is great and it's just so beautiful outside with the sunrise and the moon setting. I am up to 1.66 miles, tomorrow I am going to the neighborhood wal-mart and back, which is 1.81 miles.

Meg - This will be the second sermon at the Church I'm doing a 2 year internship at. I've probably done about 10 sermons in the past but not with quite the expectation that I have on me now. My hamstrings are doing well - the day off did wonders and getting back into a rhythm of running helps too. Yoga is a good thing for stretching and getting back into running so good for you, and good for you to be increasing your distance like you are. Have a great weekend.
KValley - You definitely are an early exerciser. I'm not sure that I could go running/exercising at that hour but then again I don't go to bed until midnight so... I hope that you aren't coming down with the cold that's blowing around but if you are the zinc will do wonders if yours is like mine.
Susan - Glad you're feeling so ready for your race. I hope that you do, in fact, have a good day this weekend. Somehow I know you will.
Kathy B - Have a good weekend and don't work too hard. ;)

I ran with my friend again today - 22 minutes with him and another 44 minutes for me. It felt really good even thoug I had to struggle back up the hill here. It's amazing just how steep some of the hills are around here - and long too. Hamstrings are doing well so I'm feeling pretty good. Unlike KValley tomorrow is Monday on campus (because we had a holiday on Monday) so I'm in class until 5:00 tomorrow evening. Probably won't run but might ride afterwards.

Hope everyone has a good day tomorrow and a great weekend. Happy trails,
Les
