View Full Version : Request: OT posts

I know that some of you feel strongly that the off-topic posts shouldn't have been separated from the GOOD FOOD boards for reasons of community (and so forth)...

But I'd like to make a request. SINCE the boards have been reconfigured to accomodate off-topic posts on the OTHER STUFF board, could we try to use them for such?

My line of thinking is this: If we have people posting OFF TOPIC information in BOTH places, one place is liable to get more traffic than the other (hence, less answers to posts). Additionally, the board will become a jumble of all kinds of topics and all sense of organization will be lost.

If, on the other hand, members who are interested in OFF TOPIC information check the OTHER STUFF board regularly and post there -- that board will get the majority of OT traffic and posts will be answered accordingly. This keeps the boards neat, and still allows us to socialize as we have been.

I'll admit, the reconfiguration is something to get used to. But let's try to remember this: Change isn't always bad... sometimes it's just DIFFERENT.

Wanted to add a quick note. One good thing about the new board is that we won't need to apologize anymore for bringing up something that's a bit, or totally, off-topic! :) There's a place that welcomes such topics. In fact, on that other board, "off-topic" can properly be considered "on-topic"!

I'd like to think that this essentially "technological" or "organizational" change won't come close to eroding the eclectic and strong community we have here.

Just tryin' to look at things on the bright side, as they used to say in The Brady Bunch... ;) (Yeah, I was born in the '70s...can you tell?)

lorilei---I agree with you completely on this. I'm glad you brought this up. Since we have the OT board, we might as well utilize it.

OK - well what is off topic then? Some are obvious, but what about - Restaraunts in other cities? Kitchen appliances? Penzy's? Atlantans going to the Farmer's market together? Polls of any type? ...

Just wondering what the line is. Is this current board now strictly recipes & advice on making a recipe?

I think we're free to decide that amongst ourselves. Certainly this wasn't meant to cause us a bunch of undue stress...

Probably at this point, it would just be good to confine definitively off-topic conversation (cats, dogs, etc) to the OTHER STUFF board... ;)

Anyone?

Sure thing. This is Maelynn's definition:

Actually we did receive a lot of comments about off topic threads. And there was some mention of it in the thread itself. We have no plans to break up the food board into more granular topics however.

Because we received many emails on the topic, and by looking at the boards from a "newbie's" point of view - going to the Great Food board should be about what you would expect - food.

If the thread has to do with food or cooking, it will stay in the Great Food board. If it has to do with a healthier lifestyle, it will stay in the Healthy Living board.

But, if it has nothing to do with any of those things but is just a fun comment, interesting question or even a personal concern, then we now have a place for it. Now "Other Stuff" is what it says it is and "Great Food" is as well.

We welcome you comments on this addition. That's what our community is all about here.

Thanks for the question!

Maelynn

I agree with Lorilei--cats, dogs, and things that can not be related to food in any way should go on the other stuff board. I would think that anything dealing with food, the kitchen, restaurants, appliances should be on the great food board.

Good - I agree with those topics staying on the board. I just didn't want to be in violation of the new set-up!

LOL, Angela! My dogs would be highly offended to know that they cannot be related to food in any way -- they are both convinced that they should be at the center of any food-related activity in our house! :p

I think I am really going to enjoy this board and this community. :)

Robin--I thought about the way I phrased that after I posted. My cat is pretty much food related too, as he is always checking out what's for dinner! :)

I'm of the opinion that the board could have stayed the way it was and I would have been just fine...but since it's split, I'll go with it and make a conscious effort to think before I post.

If you think about it, however, the fact that there is so may OT posts is a testimonial to the people on this board. We're all friends, not just people looking to find out how to roast garlic and then leave the board. Friends talk about other things besides food and cooking! Well, I guess they do sometimes but I can't think of a much more interesting topic except maybe for chocolate! Whoops! That's food too! :p

The fact that we ask each other about how to get stains off carpet and how to get an estranged relative back into the family only says that we're not just a bulletin board, we're family. Glad to be one of you. Good Night John-Boy! :D

Jewel,

I agree with you 100% and the others too who think the board should have stayed the same. Unfortunately our overwhelming vote to have it stay the same did not prevail
so what can we do....live with it I guess.
