I just found out today that DH and I are being taken to NYC for Thanksgiving. We aren't really thrilled with the idea of crashing out with the rest of his family at his sisters small apartment in New Jersey. We'd like to stay in the city BUT we don't want to spend a fortune. We can afford to splurge a little but the Ritz-Carlton is probably not an option. Can someone please suggest a nice hotel (close to everything) and a restaurant or two?

Thanks!

If I were you I would check out fodors.com. It is the best best best travel site and they have a bulletin board like this one. You can find some really amazing information. Just need to do a search on NYC.

http://fodors.com/ (My first link-yippeee!)

Go to travel talk on the left hand side, and hit united states. Then use the search box in the middle of the page.

I've stayed in the city at a great hotel--Skyline Hotel on 10th Ave. between 49th and 50th. It's a convenient location, but yet off the beaten path. Broadway and Times Square are just a few blocks walk. They also have free parking for guests (a big plus in NYC). The hotel has a web page, www.skylinehotel.com Thanksgiving might be a difficult time to try and book a hotel for, that's a busy time of year there, expecially with the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. I'd book ASAP.

As far as restaurants--wow, there are so many of them and I honestly don't remember having eaten at a bad one. There is a restaurant at the hotel too.

Have a fun time!

Try the Hotel Edison at 47th & Broadway: http://www.edisonhotelnyc.com/ , also Hotel Wellington at 7th & 55th: http://www.wellingtonhotel.com/ . I've stayed at both, and the rooms are small but clean and neat. Prices were reasonable (less than $200 per night) and both locations were convenient.

A note: most hotels I've been to in NYC will hold your bags for you if you need to arrive earlier or leave later than the posted check-in or check-out time. Very handy if you want to do some additional sight-seeing without toting your luggage around.

Have fun!

I'm going to the city this weekend and got a great rate ($139) at a nice hotel. I did a search for NYC hotels and a site came up with many listings, including amenities, locations and prices. It even included a link to the site so I could make a reservation. I don't have the site, but try searching. We're staying at the Hotel Bedford, "a charming European-style hotel, this weekend. It's at 40th and Lexington. I'll let you know what I think, next week! :D

You might also consider checking out Priceline. I had never gotten a hotel room on Priceline before, but I ended up with a 4-star hotel in downtown Portland for a cheap $60/night (their rates when I called over the phone started at $130/night)! You can't bid on a specific hotel, but you can bid on a level of hotel (4-star, 3-star, etc.) in a specific area of town (they have cities broken up into different regions).

Just a thought!

My husband and I went to NYC last February and stayed at On the Ave a new hotel on the Upper West Side. It's a few blocks from Lincoln Center and a couple of blocks from Central Park. H&H bagels and Zabars are down the street from it.

It's more of a residental area but we really enjoyed staying in a real New York neighborhood. There are lots of great little restaurants less than a block from the hotel. You can get down to the Times Square area on the subway in just a few minutes.

We paid $99 a night which I think was a special wintertime rate, but I would recommend it. The rooms are all ultramodern and very chic.

Here's their website http://www.ontheave-nyc.com

Enjoy your trip to New York!
