I have had the most frustrating time this week with trying to make 1 recipe - I'm beginning to believe that I *shouldn't* make it!

I'd put on the menu for this week 5 Spice Pork Roll-ups from A Spoonful of Ginger cookbook (essentially an Asian burrito). No luck finding sprouts at the Farmer's market or my normal grocery store. But no big deal as we were out of sesame oil and rice vinegar, so needed to go to the Asian market anyway. Hubby very graciously offers to run this errand as I was tired. We also needed to pick up "won-ton wrappers" for the recipe.

He returns with these tiny 2x2 inch "won-ton wrappers" - not exactly something you could wrap up several ingredients in. Oh he says, you wanted "egg roll" wrappers. Now my husband is not culinaryly-challenged. We shop and cook together - and have never bought these tiny things - but I had told him "won-ton" and that's what he bought. To top it off he also bought some hybrid soybean & sesame oil b/c they didn't have sesame oil. He did however find bean sprouts.

He works by a grocery store and stops and finds egg roll wrappers and real sesame oil - so we're all set now. I look at the recipe this morning and realize the pork should marinate (says for an hour, but longer preferred). So I rush around making the marinade before work, only to realize that we're out of rice wine!

Arghhhh.

Yes, I know what you mean. The past month I've wanted to try two new CL meals and haven't been able to. The one is creamy pasta with asparagus. The grocery store has had lots of asparagus, but it's horrible looking with little bugs flying around it. The other is Potatoe and Leek Frittata and the store hasn't had any leeks. I think they are in season now, though maybe I'm mistaken. I've been wanting to make these meals because I wanted to try new things (never have had leeks and haven't had asparagus much in the past). Maybe I'm not supposed to eat these foods http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif, but I'll keep trying.

Sounds familiar to me too! This always seems to happen to me, but one memorable attempt was the Spring Posole from several issues ago (early 2000?). It got rave reviews on the BB and sounded great. I bought all the ingredients except for the golden hominy, which wasn't available in my grocery store (which should have tipped me off). I live in a big city with lots of ethnic areas and specialty shops so I thought "no problem! I'll find it somewhere else!"...ya right! I phoned every specialty store I could think of, and the closest I got was white hominy in a 1 kg can (about 2 lbs). I guess West Coasters don't eat a lot of hominy! I couldn't quite bring myself to make anything else with the ingredients, since I kept thinking I'd find the hominy "any day now", so most of the vegetables went green and yucky in my fridge. Oh well...I guess it wasn't meant to be!

Jen- I was one who praised the Spring Posole. Did you try a Mexican grocery for golden hominy? Also, I'm not too sure that white hominy wouldn't work. I don't know enough about hominy to be sure, but the ingredients (hominy)look similar on the can.

I called a bunch of specialty stores that carry Mexican food, as well as a warehouse/supply company that specializes in Mexican food for restaurants, etc. They were the ones who had the white hominy...but it was in such a HUGE can! I think I'll just wait until I'm down in the States next - I'll pick up a few cans so I can try the recipe instead of having to eat 2 lbs worth of hominy!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
