Has anyone ever tried this one? Although it is a bit pricey($39.95), I just may have to splurge...I love shrimp, but absolutely HATE the cleaning, deveining process...this looks like a neat gadget to have...check it out:
www.shellmaster.net
It's advertised in the June issue of Southern Living, p.166

Hi Gail,

Saw your post and thought you were talking about some short guy with a tray. Interesting item, that... First I've seen of it. I dunno... I kind of like my little $8.00 Shrimp Peel thingie from Williams-Sonoma and I've gotten quite adept with it. I personally wouldn't bother-- to me it's just another gadget to crowd the many gadgets I already own-- but to someone else it may be a godsend. Remember, I'm the person who doesn't feel microwaves are necessities, either.

If you decide to go with it, do let us know what you think of it.

I first thought your thread title was supposed to read Shrimp Butter, couldn't decide if it was soft butter with a minced shrimp for cooking*. Then, a poll; do you use butter on your shrimp? But when I went to the site, it is too funny!! How big is it? Let us know if you get it, it might be a great gift for my brother...
* Or, wouldn't shrimp butter be delicious on a rosemary biscuit??

Gabby,
Did you ever get one of these? Anyone else?

DD has decided she LOVES shrimp, so I've been doing some about once a week. I HATE the deveining and shelling, though, so I sometimes cheat and buy frozen, peeled, and deveined. It seems like this would be a helpful thing to have IF IT WORKS. . .

Anyone?

I would hate to have to clean that thing...I love finding easy peel shrimp that have already been cut down the back. Shrimp boils or bbq shrimp that are peeled after cooking are my usual prep, so the easy peel makes that easier.

Psst--I have Outback's shrimp marinade recipe if anyone's interested...

My son and I were discussing shrimp one day, and he mentioned that a friend of his who has a restaurant had this gadget that you put the shrimp in and it peeled and deveined it at the same time. I had seen a picture of the shrimp butler and described it to him. He said it sounded like the same one and that his friend said it worked great. I also saw it in the Chef's catalog for $39.99.

I always buy my shrimp frozen, peeled, deveined. The only work is defrosting them!

That's what I thought too! Actually I do have a recipe for shrimp butter. It's not light, but its oh, so good. It is a cracker spread.

Shrimp Butter
1/2 cup may
1 cup butter softened
8 oz cream cheese softened
2 or 3 shakes of worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 clove of garlic, crushed
2 Tbsp onion, minced
2 hard cooked eggs, chopped
1/2 lb shrimp, cooked and finely chopped
crackers or melba rounds

Beat together the first 8 ingredients. Add eggs and shrimp. Chill. Spread on crackers and serve.

I'm dying to know if that Shrimp Butler works. Please keep us posted!

Yes - please tell us how this works if you buy it. It looks like you still have to head the critters so I'm not sure how much time it would really save.

I emailed my son the info and he said to order one for him (he's out of town). I am trying to find out if anyone carries it locally, otherwise I will order it tomorrow from Chef's Catalog. They ship pretty fast.
We don't get shrimp here with heads on them, so that wouldn't be a problem. Can't wait to try it.

madpots,
They have them at Cooking.com, as well, and everything is 10% off right now. To get the 10% off, search for "BESTDEAL" at www.cooking.com

Ditto! :)

Sam's Club sells a 2-pound bag of frozen nice-sized shrimp for about $12. Worth every penny, especially since I can't easily get fresh, raw shrimp here (and even when I can it's probably been previously frozen). :)

It is my understanding that almost all shrimp is previously frozen. Most shrimp boats go out for days at a time, so each catch is frozen immdediately to keep it fresh.

I'll have to check out the frozen shrimp at Sam's. I've been buying little 1 lb bags at my grocery store, but the shrimp end up being pretty small. . .

Robyn, thank you for the info. I checked it out, but could not find the 10% discount. Bestdeal just gave me lower phone bills. 10% would be $4.00 and that would help on the shipping. Both Cooking and Chef's shipping is $8.95, from the company it is $6.95. I have a call in to them to find out if I can get it here.

That's strange. It worked fine yesterday. If you searched for "BESTDEAL" in their keyword search window, it gave you an explanation of the discount. But today, it doesn't seem to work. On the mail-out I have in front of me, it also says you can call 1-800-663-8810.

Here's what it says word for word:
10% OFF
To redeem this offer, search for "BESTDEAL" at www.cooking.com. OR call 1-800-663-8810 and mention offer code "BESTDEAL."

Oops--and the small print I didn't notice before says the discount is good for each shipment over $49.

I also noticed someone is distributing the shrimp butler on e-bay. I think the price there is $31.99 with $7 or $8 for shipping.

There is always fine print! I will check out on e-bay....I don't know why I am trying to get a better deal - after all, my son is paying for it!

Robyn, after thinking about it awhile I checked out ebay and decided to order one from them for $31.99 plus $7.00 postage. I took "buy it now" so it should be shipped soon. I have bought things from ebay before, but just hadn't thought about it this time. I will keep yall posted as to how it works. It comes with a 30-day guarantee from the company, so guess I can't go too far wrong.

More info on 'fresh' shrimp. If the shrimp isn't live it has probably has been frozen even if sold as fresh. Fresh, dead, unfrozen shrimp doesn't last more than a day or two. We deal with heads on shrimp since we get them from our own shrimp pot. Fresh shrimp are really great and I love them but -- sometimes I'd trade the shrimp pot for a climate that grows tomatoes, melons, peaches, etc. Hope the shrimp butler works.

I ordered one for my son a couple of years ago. I tried it and it worked fine. I had forgotten about it. I doubt if he uses it very much - might have to reclaim it! It isn't hard to clean.
