Well, I don't have a workout to report, but thought I'd check in and send good vibes to Newsomz for the race this weekend! Can't believe it's already here. I remember you talking about it ages ago. Very smart to rest a lot this week with your cold. You'll feel better this weekend for letting the cold pass. We all look forward to the race report.

I was hoping to run today, but have lots o' meetings, then we're supposed to have rain/snow mix this afternoon! So, autumn is definitely back. I've been doing a bit of core work most days this week. Very, very small, but at least it's a start.

KValley - good luck w/the remaining packing & move this weekend. Your new place sounds really great.

Robyn - Are you skiing again? Hope you're feeling more social soon :-)

It's our last weekend for the outdoor farmer's market, so I'm trying to talk DH into going w/me tomorrow for a leisurely morning. Any other fun plans this weekend?

Good luck Carrie!!!!!

Swim exam was last night. I have been fighting a cold most of the week (lots of people sick in the office) so breathing was a little rough but I did okay. I am the worlds slowest swimmer so I did 500 meters in 11:53. Hopefully that will improve drastically. Tonight is my bike exam. Warm up 10 minutes then go hard 10 minutes and monitor heart rate. No distance rating as I'll be on the trainer to try to keep my testing environment constant through the winter.

And, yes, I've skied 2 times with a 3rd planned this weekend and coach training next weekend.

Good luck, Carrie!!!

Robyn, by far most triathletes I know are weakest in swimming. Triathlons definitely favor strong runners, IMO. Swimming is my strongest of the three but I have been swimming since I was a tot. Practice definitely will help you improve your stroke and time. Are you swimming with a group, like a master's swim team or anything? Regardless, your dedication to getting stronger and healthier is so inspiring! I am proud of you. :)

Hey Susan, don't you have a 10K this weekend? Good luck!

I decided to bail on my running buddy's invite to run the Phoenix 10K with him this Sunday. I have to work all day tomorrow (a volunteer pro bono clinic) so I am just not up for two early weekend mornings in a row. Not to mention, Saturday night we were invited to a lasagna party at a friend's house, so not sure how late that will go. :o I'll go out on my own Sunday for a nice, leisurely 6-mile run. And with the weather as cool as it's gotten here, I don't have to worry about hitting the road early to beat the heat.

Hi to all the runners, and have a great weekend!!

Good Luck, Carrie!!!

Robyn- brava for your swimming efforts! I echo Eva in saying that you are such an inspiration. I am getting keener on attempting a sprint tri or two again next year and it is the swimming that I struggle to get my head around. I hard a hard time with this- not so much the training, but the actual event on my first and only tri a couple of years ago. I'm feeling ready to take it head on...

I just had to share this tidbit I came across in (yesterday's) NY Times:

Eva, beware of psycho foxes! :eek :p

Fox bites jogger in Prescott, AZ (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/nov/05/jogger-runs-mile-help-rabid-fox-biting-arm/)

Thank goodness we have only giant man-eating slugs to contend with here. :D

Morning news was interrupted with a flood warning for a region north of Seattle. It's been raining buckets since yesterday morning. Moving today is going to utterly suck  But we'll get through it. Roasted Vegetable & Pesto Pizza from PCC and a bottle of Castellar Cava Brut await us tonight...

So, I'm just about to disconnect the computer. I'll catch you all on the other side...

I saw that the other day -- crazy!!!!! Fortunately, I'm surrounded by concrete so little risk of that - I only occasionally see a stray dog when I am out. Although one evening recently (when I was NOT with my running group), they saw a HUGE snake slither across the running path right in front of them.

Susan, thanks for starting us off this week and good luck in your 10k! Another race already - I'm impressed!

Robyn, hope you feel better soon and that the weekend is restorative.

Snakes - eek!!! They freak me out. Eva, I'm sure your group was much calmer about it than I would have been. DH ran over a snake once while mountain biking. He didn't see it until it was too late. Even if I despise snakes, I still felt bad about that.

Carrie, good luck!!!!! Finally time for that 1/2. Can't wait to hear all about it.

Julie, hope the move goes smoothly and that the rain holds off. Enjoy that lovely celebratory dinner!

I ran this morning and enjoyed it thoroughly. I wish I could run in the mornings more often. I also just signed up for a 1/2 marathon this coming winter (approx. 3 1/2 months from now). I don't usually sign up for races this early but this one is very popular and sells out quickly. If I don't end up doing it, I can sell/give the slot to someone in my run club.

Okay, signing off =set the table and see when DH gets home. My mom is over and we are going to indulge in take-out Thai this evening.

Hope everyone else is well... Les, Vicci, Kathy, Betsy, ktg (from Costa Rica!), and everyone else. Hey Kathy -- did your son's first voting experience live up to his expectations?

Hey! No running to report here, either. I just wanted to say THANKS for all the good wishes :D I have a few friends who will be meeting me at the finish line tomorrow so I am pretty excited about that. Currently, cooking up some pasta for my dinner so I think I'll be all set tomorrow.

Susan - Good luck on your 10K!!!!

Robyn - Great job on the swimming! Count me in among those who hate swimming.

Aggie - I know how you feel not wanting to commit to an early morning race.. I got invited to several things tonight which are very tempting! Drat, why not another weekend?

KValley - Your dinner sounds great!

Natasha - Great job with the run. Have fun visiting with your mom :)

Robyn - Great job on the swimming! Count me in among those who hate swimming.

Carrie - I don't actually hate swimming. I'm not good at all but I find it relaxing actually. More so that cycling or running outdoors since I don't have to watch out for cars or get yelled at by drivers. I just kind of go.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I'm not quite sure whats up but November/December are often tough for me as a single woman. :(

Susan, good luck on the 10k!

Carrie - I hope that you have a great run this weekend. I'll be pulling for you and I'm glad that you're ready for it.

Susan - Thanks for starting today. I too thought you were doing a 10k this weekend -- I know on the trail and pretty easy but still...
Nat - Which 1/2 are you signed up for? I'm looking forward to signing up for the Marine Corps 1/2 when it opens in a couple days - of course that race won't be until May but still...
Robyn - Good thoughts to you as you get into the Nov/Dec months. I can guess why you have such troubles with these months too.

Nothing to report for running except Sushi with IRL running buddies in Norfolk. However, I plan on running on the trail (aka the swamp) in the morning. It shouldn't be swampy but still a good run on the 'morrow and probably 10 miles.

Sad note: one of my IRL running buddies (for Betsy - Rosemary) mother passed away very suddenly yesterday.

Fading fast... busy weekend here... Happy trails,
Les

Natasha

I imagine Carrie is doing her 1/2 right now. Go Carrie Go!

Les, sushi sounds fun. I'm sorry to hear about your IRL running buddy's mother, though :(

The race I signed up for is the Chilly Half. The Marine Corps 1/2 sounds awesome. Good luck getting your registration in for that!

Off to do some stuff. I plan to ride or swim today... still not sure which. Didn't sleep all that well. Whichever I do, it will in the afternoon.

Take care, all!

Hi all! I'm "back to backing" because I was just skimming the World Championship 70.3 results. *spoilers ahead, if anyone cares*

How's this for an overachiever? ;)

"Add another amazing exploit to Joanna Zeiger's amazing resume. She's an Olympian. She's an Ironman champion. She managed to finish her PhD, finish fourth at the Olympics and finish fifth at the Ford Ironman World Championship all in the same year. Now we can add another amazing feat: the fastest Ironman 70.3 race ever - on the way to winning the title here at the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3." [Note: Her time was 4:02:48.]

Also, Bozzone must be pretty darn pleased!!

Nice too to see that Brent McMahon took 8th place in the mens' race. He got left off the Canadian Olympic tri team.

Um, yeah, just a slight overachiever.

Did my run test. It went fine and I didn't quite puke.

Looking forward to some race reports!

Natasha

Helloooo... runners and racers, you out there? ;)

Robyn, I bet you're glad the run test is behind you! Good stuff.

I have an intense spin and a good run to report since I last posted. :)

Hope everyone is well and that the racers had fun!

Nice job on the spin and run, Natasha.

I am glad the run test is over, at least until the next one in another 4 weeks. Skiing was good although short today. Too many people on the slopes and once I saw my first collision my friends and I called it a day and headed for a bite to eat.

Leslie Ferguson

It sounds like you had a good weekend, at least for working out Nat. Yep, she sounds like an overachiever to me. Sorry that you didn't sleep well and I hope that passes soon. Thanks for the name of your race - I figure I'll be able to get into the race since I plan on signing up as soon as it opens but being able to run in the race (may have many things giong on next May) will be questionable. Thanks for your thoughts to Rosemary - I'm sure she's whacked out right now too.

Robyn - Congrats on your runnign test, glad it came out ok. Sorry that you had to call the skiing but with too many people on the slopes it can be a little dicey.

I didn't do much today except have fun at church - lots of great comments on my sermon and lots of great catching up. Need to push on to do some schoolwork so I'll push out now and see you all sometime on the morrow.

Happy trails (and waiting on race reports too),
Les

Hi guys - I haven't been posting much b/c work has gotten crazy. I leave tomorrow for NY. Taking my running shoes, but honestly not sure whether or not I'll get a run in. We'll see.

The race yesterday was really, really fun. It was quite cold & windy, but the race was in a state park that had a cabin where we all stayed warm b4 & after the race. I did better last year, but keep reminding myself that I was in IM shape back then! It was fabulous to catch up w/some GFs I hadn't seen in a while. Plus, this is just a great, small community race. They cap it at 200 people. The winners get homemade pumpkin pies! And the post-race grub was homemade soup and cookies, along with mint tea.

Here's a photo w/my friends. A lot of age-group medals!!

Les, congrats on your sermon!!! Great job.

Robyn and Susan, nice pics and Susan, thanks for the race report. Lots of happy bright smiles in that pic! Looks like your hair is quite a bit longer than when we had the VRB get-together?

I think I'll spin tonight but I have a few things to finish first, and some potato soup to eat :) Good thing as it's chilly out this evening!

Hope everyone else is well,
Nat

Carrie, so how did the race go?

Susan, we know how your race turned out! ;) Nice photo, you all looked quite pleased with yourselves and the day.

Nice outfit, Robyn, the background scenery could be on a Christmas card!

I hope that Julie is getting settled in, and that ktg is enjoying her vacation.

Hi to Les, Nat, KathyB, Eva, et al. :D

For the first time in 8 days I got out to run the trails today. At 35 degrees (and windy), I wish it had been warmer. I was having problems with my face-mask integrating with the cd player's ear-buds integrating with the ear-muffs... but still managed a little over 30 minutes. I considered that a victory. :o

Robyn1007
11-10-2008, 08:38 PM
Quick report for me tonight. Did 33 minutes on the treadmill, about 25 of them at an actual jog pace. :D Then 30 minute swim. My back/upper body are sore and out of whack for some odd reason. Tomorrow is an off day so hopefully that will help.

Robyn - love your ski photo! You look so happy on the slopes! :) 30 minutes of swimming?! That sounds like an eternity to me!! Hehe! Good for you!

Susan - love your race photo with your friends! It sounds like it was a great race and a great reason to see some friends you hadn't seen in a while. Homemade pumpkin pie?! Yum!

Vicci - 30 minutes in 35 degree windy weather is definitely a victory! At what temperature/wind do you start wearing a face mask, in addition to other winter attire?

Les - Congratulations on your sermon! So nice to get positive feedback and know that what you are doing is positively impacting others.

Good morning Julie, Eva, Natasha, Kathy, and everyone! Carrie, how was your race!

It has been busy busy at work! The last quarter is always extra crazy....I think all the pharmaceutical companies want to get their clinical trials open before the end of the year (I work in the research department at a large cancer center). But I am super happy to report that I am officially a 5K runner! No, no race yet, that's not until December 6th. But I ran 3.1 miles on Saturday and yesterday....I wanted to do it again yesterday to make sure it wasn't a fluke on Saturday hehe. And it wasn't! I never would have thought that I'd be running over 3 miles, but I am!

Also got some new shoes last week. I figured if I am going to be running regularly I should wear proper shoes for my feet - I have low arches/flat feet and I overpronate a lot . So I got the Asics gel foundation 8. I like them a lot!

Meg, Ah, I guess that you don't need the winter protection where you live! :) I hate the neoprene mask, but my asthma is induced by both exerciese and cold temps, so I usually put it on if the temperature is 30 or below. The wind chill yesterday morning was in the mid-20's though, so I dug it out for the first time since last January (before I broke my ankle!). I was lucky enough to find my gloves, but couldn't seem to locate the wide fleece headband, (which works better with the ear-buds than the earmuffs do). I simply wasn't prepared for this first run in the cold weather!

And congratulations on the 3+ miles! You're right on track for... 3-1/2 weeks, is it? ;)

I have the same "type" of feet that you do, and need new shoes badly. I love my Asics trail-runners, so should just get off my duff and get another pair instead of trying to reinvent the wheel by looking at different manufacturers...

I hope to get a run in later today, since tomorrow will be a busy (and early) one, but this morning was some time spent on the weight machine.

Hope everyone else has a nice day.

Victory at last!!! I haven't been able to log in to the board for the past two days.. Not sure why. I sent this update to Les & Robyn via Facebook but now I can post it here :)

So, the weather was perfect on Saturday morning. Clear, calm, and cool (~50 degrees). The race was about 500 runners.. more than I expected! We ran on our local rails-to-trails path so it was quite crowded at the beginning and no spectators along the course.

Most people took off fast but I hung back towards the end at a 10:30 pace. At the turn around point I upped my pace and kept upping it until the finish. I loved passing people the whole way to the finish! Really gives you a boost and motivation to keep going.. Can't let them pass you :) Anyhow, I ended with a time of 2:04:34, faster than I was anticipating, and an overall 9:30 pace which I was really happy with.

My friends met me at the finish and then we headed to brunch. Overall a great first half and I am really looking forward to my next big race, the Paris Marathon :D. It will be awesome to be running with crowds cheering you on the whole way!!!

Picture and personal hello's to come...

Carrie, great pics and big congrats!!! That's a very impressive time, too. Paris, here you come!

Meg, good going on your first 2 3.1 mile runs!! You're in fine shape for your first 5k race.

Gotta run... did get in a nice spin tonight. Best to all!

Edited to add that Carrie, I loved your comment about passing people. Some VRBers here will recall that when I did a 30k a few years ago, there were pithy signs at each km marker. One was "It's rude to count out loud when you pass people". That was one of my signature lines here for a while, it amused me so much!

Great pictures Carrie! Looks like a beautiful day.....50's is close to perfect in my book. Congratulations on what sounds like a strong race, espicially with you passing people in the second half. Way to go!

Susan, your race sounds fun, too, although way to cold for me. The chow sounds good, though. Nothing like hot tea when you are cold!

YEA, Meg! We knew you could do it!

Vicci, Way to grab your 30 minutes on the trail!! :D And good job on your weights, too. I am glad to know I am not the only one who has not been running for several days. It seems like we have been really busy with lots of different things, and it just hasn't worked out to run or even go to the CC. At all. I have managed some AM yoga a few times, but that's it. I am thinking I may get something in on Thursday....

Robyn, the ski outfit looks sharp! HOpe you are having a blast on the slopes. My brother just sent me the packet for the spring ski trip he puts together every year....

Aggie, glad to hear you are getting some relief from the heat. I hope you took full advantage of sleeping in on Sunday!

Les, hope school is going well and you are managing some runs. Nice to hear your sermon generated some positive comments....that means they were awake, right? ;)

Natasha, sounds like you are pretty busy and still getting in some good workouts. Good for you! When exactly is your 1/2? Up in your area, I would think it will be pretty cold! There is a 5K in KC on the Sunday around Groundhog's Day that takes place in "the caves", average temp year round somewhere in the 50's. I have been wanting to check it out. I'll have to see if I can convince the rest of the gang...

DS was very excited about the election. Our friend invited us to the Democratic Headquarters in our area to watch the returns. It was very lively there, and it was pretty thrilling when they announced the results. Our friend did not win her race, but it was very close (47% to 53%) against an incumbent, so we were still very proud of her.

Pretty long post for not having any workouts to report! :o I will check in again when I have something to show for myself. Hope you are all having a good week!

Breat pictures all - neat ski-suit Robyn. You definitely look like you're having a great time Susan and I'm with Nat, you look like you've let your hair grow out since FP. Carrie, thanks for the note on FB and you too look like you're having a blast in your race. Great time and I hope that you enjoy Paris.
Meg - Congrats on your runs, 2 x 3.1 miles... you're ready for the 5k. Neat scoots too.
Vicci - Glad you braved the elements and found most of your cold weather gear, even if it took some time. I'm a fan of not changing horses (or scoots) if they are working so stick with your Asics trail sunners.
Kathy - I'd love to run a 5k in 50 degree weather. Too bad it's over Groundhog's Day or I'd see how to get out your way. ;)

Too funny about the comment about staying awake during my sermon. One of the last things going through my mind as I stepped in the pulpit was "I definitely won't have any problems staying awake in the sermon today and if I do I have some problems." :p :D

I got out and ran today and it was glorious, 45 degrees, a light breeze, and dry pavement. Did about 50 minutes, I keep wondering why I don't run more...

Hope all are well, great runs for folks, need to skid but I'll see you on the morrow. Happy trails,
Les

Vicci - mid-20s?! Brrrr! Every once in a while it will be that cold here, with the wind chill, but it's rare. The couple of mornings it was in the low 40s I wore a polartec type fleece headband and it was wonderful for my ears. Yes, it's just over 3 weeks to the 5k! :) Have you found that having the "type" of feet we have gives you additional problems, or makes you more prone to problems?

Carrie - Hooray! Congratulations on your race! :) Love the photos! You look so fresh and happy! It's so cool that you were able to continuously pick up the pace through the second half and pass everyone! Yay!

Les - Your run sounds great, perfect glorious running weather!

Good morning Natasha and Kathy! Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement!

Did some yoga on Tuesday and ran and did some rock climbing yesterday. Was planning to run again today, but my right plantar facsia is a bit inflamed. It hurt yesterday at the end of the run and hurt most of the day and while rock climbing last night. So I decided to listen to my body today and ride the stationary bike instead of pushing through the pain and running. I know that was the right thing to do, and I know that cross training with other cardio exercise is good, but I can't help but feel a tad guilty. My mind is my own worst enemy sometimes!

Happy almost Friday! :)

Leslie Ferguson

Vicci... Have you found that having the "type" of feet we have gives you additional problems, or makes you more prone to problems?

Driving by as the rain falls steadily, but wanted to answer this question. Back in the day when I overpronated I found it easier to find shoes to make my running gait more normal and most of my problems back then were associated with over use and weight than pronation. On the other hand, now that I under-pronate (supinate) it's hard to get shoes that work for me and there aren't as many options because I shouldn't (can't) wear motion control or stability shoes. However must say that flat feet is something that is problematic - LW has flat feet and ends up with issues in her knees unless she wears her arch supports (along with motion control shoes).

Just stopped by to say hi and wish everyone a good remainder of the week.

Back to report weights at the CC and 30 min on the EB. I also took the neighbors 2 very large dogs for a mile and a half walk, or maybe they were walking me. There was even a bit of jogging involved when we started and they were rarin' to go! The neighbors are out of town this week, and DS agreed to care for the dogs, but had some conflicts today. The things my kids get me in to.... :D

Drive by again tonight... the story of my life. But that happens when you decide to change sermons with 3 days before it is preached.

Vicci - Somehow I missed mid-20s for windchill. Not sure how I feel about that - part of me says I'd be quite happy, a couple shirts and my gloves and I'm a happy camper. Then again, the other part of me says that's cold. Good for you to get out in it.
Meg - Sorry your PF is acting up. Good to listen to your body - it won't lead you astray. As my coach used to say, sometimes it's smarter to rest and live to run another day tomorrow than to run today and not be able to run for a week. Still, can be difficult to remember that. Good to do the stationary bike though.
Not sure what a breat picture is but there are some great ones floating around here.

Greeting to the rest of the gang...

Ran today after school. I had hoped that the rain from this afternoon would have made things better to run -- no dice. Humidity - 98%, temp - 50 degrees, sun - down => run in long sleeves... leads to sweating up a storm. :( Still a run of 45+ minutes. It was during the run that I decided that I needed another tack with my sermon and even put together an outline that I need to fill in now so... until later, have a great Friday.

Happy trails,
Les

Les, that's great that you fit in a run regardless of things being so busy. Good luck with the rush sermon prep  Seriously, you'll be great (again)!

Meg, good thinking to rest up and I hope your foot feels better pronto.

Kathy, thanks for the post-election report! So glad your DS enjoyed it. I can imagine that it must have been "lively" where you were. Sounds like a fun night!

Hi to Vicci, Robyn, Susan, Carrie, and the rest of the gang.

It's been an unspeakably busy week. I managed to fit in 2 spins since the good weekend workouts. I soooo need a run.

Best to all!

Carrie, what fun photos! I especially like that energized little move you were making as you neared the finish line. :)

Your comment Les,
Did about 50 minutes, I keep wondering why I don't run more...
made me laugh. Really, it does feel so good to run but sometimes it's all I can do to get through the day, and then when I do run, I often wonder this myself. :D

Meg, the only problem I seem to have is that I have to be careful about what shoes I buy, whether they are running shoes or casual sandals, because the way I stand/walk affects my back. Hope that your pf clears up soon-- don't push it! Soon I will be unable to run because of snow, and then I'll be forced to use the EB. Not looking forward to that.

KathyB, well, you said that you hoped to get out today and you did-- with 2 large dogs, to boot! ;) Any exercise is good exercise, you know.

HI to everyone else. I did get a run in on Tuesday evening, but my day today got screwed up a bit with unexpected work coming in, and tomorrow we are going to the lake house for a few days, so I hope to get a run in while we are there. Have a great weekend, all, and I'll "see" you next week!

Robyn1007

Meg, you're smart to protect your foot. I didn't and then was forced to take nearly all summer off running.

Kathy, I've been walked by dogs before, it's a little scary at times even when I love the dogs.

Les, nice job on the run and good luck with that sermon!

Nat, I'm jealous of your spins. Sounds like it's been a busy week for a lot of us.

Vicci, enjoy your weekend at the lake.

Well, my week got turned all upside down. Tuesday night I went to a concert in Boulder and on the way up there got a call that a friend's wife needed a place to stay because they're splitting up and I was the only option. What a mess I didn't want to be involved in. I've been fighting a bug for over a week and being up late dealing with that situation put me over the edge so I stayed home yesterday and missed my spin class. :( I did get a 32 minute (2.25 miles, yes I'm SLOW) jog in tonight and was to do strength but I started and was so tired I just didn't have that part in me.

(((((Robyn))))) and a big hug for your friend. Understandable that you didn't have a run in you. Take it easy on yourself and thanks for being there for your friend.

Peace,
Les

OK, 2 min til midnight, so I can still sneak in on last week's VRB thread :-)

I'm in NYC, but today was finally my last day of official conference meetings. Whew! Everything went smoothly. I still have work on Fri, but it's more of my own schedule. I have my running, shoes, but don't think I'm in a stellar spot for running. Will scope it out in the a.m.

Newsomze - congrats on a great race! And faster than you expected!! This was your first 1/2, right? Even more impressive. The photos are awesome. nice to have faces w/name.s

MegMeg - at least we have shoes to go w/your name ;-) Nice job on the 3.1 mile run. I don't think you were planning on that pre-race. We knew you could do it.

Les - I'm bleated, but kudos on the solid sermon. You are becoming quite the pro by now

I realized some of you didn't know which one was me in the photo I posted! I'm the one of the far right :-)

Talk to you on next week's thread! (with or w/out a run)
