View Full Version : Lost computer sound
Two days ago I had computer sound. Later in the day I had none. Poof - Gone! I tried searching on the internet and found some people said they lost sound when Microsoft made their latest and recent 5 updates (all at one time).
I've tried searching in My Computer for a way to fix the problem, but my search skills in these areas are limited.
Can anyone help, or suggest a solution? TIA.

could the sound card be bad on your PC?

Same thing happened to me....I have a HP laptop. I went into an HP chat and he had me uninstall something and then gave me a link to reinstall. I couldn't tell you now what we did, but you think that you could get into a chat with your tech support for the computer you have?
Good luck!

I don't think so, since the computer is new.

I have the same problem. Just all of a sudden no sound. I am not literate enough to know what to do. My volume is high, but no sound. I have plugged and unplugged, but still no sound. It is so frustrating when there are so many cooking videos.

Sound cards can and do fail in new computers (I coordinate repairs for my company which includes computers we sell with our systems). If it's new it should be under warranty, I'd contact the manufacturer's support.

If you think it could be related to the updates, you can uninstall the most recent updates and see if your sound comes back.
You don't say which version of MS you're running but with XP you go to Add/Remove hardware and make sure the "show updates" box up at the top is checked.
It helps to know the number of the update that might be responsible but even without that, you can just start with the most recent update and work your way back.
We recently had a problem with MS updates that made it so we could not connect to the internet because of a conflict with Zone Alarm. We just had to keep uninstalling that update until they pushed through a patch.

Robyn,
I need your help and suggestions.
When I checked Device Manager it said the sound is working normally. Would it say that if the sound card is bad? You would know better than since you are working with computer repairs.
The speakers and the volume control on the computer are both turned to the highest. Nothing is unplugged. I have re-booted - twice.

I tried Gateway (I have Gateway Vista) online - they sold to MCP. MCP referred me to Microsoft who says contact the company you bought it from! Talk about a run-around. I need help and there is nobody willing to help with the warranty. :(

No, I said I coordinate repairs, I am not a computer engineer nor do I play one on TV. Call Gateway and insist they help you. Tell them you've not changed any settings on your computer and you believe something is wrong with the system. They should be able to trouble shoot it for you.

I am a computer tech, so you need to contact them and ask for a supervisor.
It is very possible to have bad parts in new computers. It happens quite often because they build the computers with the most inexpensive parts possible and sometimes they get a bad batch. Happens a lot with Dell and other major manufacturers.
Electronics are disposable items now.

Unfortunately true, I had 2 major issues w/ my new Dell after having it 4 mos. I had a short in the screen which took two trips in to get repaired and the CD ROM went bad. We got an extened warranty, which we usually never do, I guess I am glad we did now!
