View Full Version : Orange Oil from Whole Foods?

The cake I'm planning to make for T'giving calls for orange peel in the frosting. I don't want little bits of peel in what is supposed to be a luxuriously smooth silky frosting, so I decided to use orange oil. Trouble is, I can't find any! The upscale Kroger doesn't have it, nor does TJ's, nor did they have any in the Wilton section of Michael's. Whole Foods has some, but the first ingredient is safflower oil. Does anyone have any experience using the WF version? What's the equivalency for subbing for peel? The bottle didn't say ... Or, any other suggestions? I fear it's too late for mail-order, at least at a reasonable price.

This certainly isn't an organic option, but could you use orange extract in a pinch? I got some lemon oil a while back at Williams-Sonoma and just checked their web site to see if they had orange -- they don't (and not the lemon anymore either that I could find).
Sur la Table carries it -- is that an option for you?

Kate, you're right, I do have some orange extract on hand and will use it if it comes down to it. Beth there isn't a Sur La Table around here, but that was a good thought ...

I order directly from Boyajian (http://www.boyajianinc.com/citrus.html) but the shipping prices are fairly steep if you're just buying one bottle.
Found it here: Famous Foods (http://www.famousfoods.com/bc01.html) where the shipping is just about the same price $5.99 but somewhat cheaper than from the source...

Totally hit or miss --- but I sometimes see the brand that Sneezles mentioned at TJ Max and Marshalls.
Sorry can't help you with your WF question -- I've never used that ingredient before.
You might want to check the Boyajian site --- it might give some info about subbing it for peel etc.
Hope the cake turns out great.

I'd be happy to drop a bottle of the SLT stuff in the mail to you if that would help. You'd definitely have it by Wednesday.

Thanks, everyone. Canice, that is a very sweet offer to ship to me. There is a TJMaxx on my way home from work, I'll buzz by there. If they don't have it ... I'm traveling to my family in Atlanta for the holiday and will be doing my cooking there, so my sister's going to try to locate some. If not, I'll use the flavoring -- lord knows I'd probably be the only person to know the difference, anyway!

There's a Sur La Table at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta. It's located near 285 and Ashford Dunwoody Rd on the Northside of town.
