I subscribe to the newsletter from the non-profit group, Center for Science in the Public Interest. These are the folks that came out with the info that hit the news a number of years back about exactly HOW MUCH fat was in movie theatre popcorn and other revelations of that type. Their most recent release to get into the news was about companies that feature pictures of certain foods prominently on their packaging and use that food in their name, but NONE of it is actually present in the product!! An example would be Quaker instant oatmeal with blueberries or peaches. The one that says "blueberries" actually uses bits of cheaper figs dyed blue and the one that says "peaches" uses bit of apple dyed orange!!! When interviewed by the media about this, these companies said they were not doing anything amiss, as people needed to spend alot more time in their grocery stores to read all the small print and find out what was actually in the product! Like everyone has HOURS to read EVERYTHING they are going to buy!
So, when I read the Cathy cartoon in today's Sunday paper, I thought it was a HOOT! The bottom line is that, if I spend all this effort to make the BEST choices by reading EVERYTHING, I may live longer, but I will be spending ALL that extra time in the supermarket aisles!
