Went to my first Rachel Ray Book Signing at Barnes & Noble today, and I must say they sure have it down pat. It was very organized. You have to get a wrist band with a number from 1-500. (We were 284 & 286). They call you by 25 numbers at a time, put a sticky on your book (new orange book only will be personalized) a couple others according to the list would be signed, but not personalized. limit 2 books per person. No pictures past the rope. It might sound hoity toity and limiting, but these rules really were for a reason. To get a lot of people through quickly. And it worked. Rachel was gracious, kind, and particularly perked up when kids came up (all kids got their picture with her). My husband and I were able to get 4 autographed gifts, but had we been able to get more, we would've (I would've liked one myself).
She was in a real signing zone, and when my turn came, I said: "Your pasta recipe cooked like risotto was especially brilliant". It got her attention and she said she liked that one too.
By the way, she looks tinier and even more cute/pretty in person! And I never once heard her say sammy or stoup! :D

I'm glad you had such a good experience - and I agree: even if it seems super regimented, they've got to keep things moving. For a while there I seemed to be going to those signings for about every FN personality who came through town, but I'm sure the crowds are MUCH bigger today. (I happened upon an Ina Garten signing at Williams-Sonoma a year or two ago and it was insane.) I think the final one I went to was the last time I saw Alton Brown and was not so much "dumb struck" as "stupid struck" when I met him. I really felt awkward. But not as awkward as when I watched the girl in front of me slip him her card and offer for him to call if he wanted to "get together" later.

My dad ventured to a Giada signing a couple of years ago to get a book signed for me for my birthday. I was in Portland the weekend before and we found out she was going to be in town just a mere couple of days after I left. I was disappointed but didn't really think twice about it. My dad really isn't the type of guy to do it but he did and they told him she wouldn't personalize the book because it wasn't the current one. He got to her and said it was for his daughter and I guess she took pity on him because I have a personalized signed copy of Everyday Italian. It means so much to me that my dad went through it for me.
