I am hoping to get some insight into huli huli sauce. As far as I know, it is avaliable only in Hawaii and is very similiar, if not the same, as teriyaki sauce. I have a friend, however, who swears it isn't the same at all. Can some of you weigh in on this?

definitely not the same! I used to have this recipe - if I'm not mistaken it has catsup in it and is sort of a tomatoey sweet and sour sauce used to make Huli Huli Chicken. My recipe originated in Hawaii.

I don't have a recipe, but have been pestering DH to get one from one of the guys on his ship (he's a local). If I get it, I'll post it here.

masimmons,

I have never made this but here is a recipe for Huli Huli Chicken that I have in one of my Hawaiian cookbooks. Not sure if this is "authentic" Huli Huli sauce, but here it is.

Peggy

Huli Huli Chicken

3/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup white wine
2 T sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger root
1 cove garlic, minced
3 lbs chicken halves or pieces

Combine soy sauce, wine, sugar, ginger and garlic. ADd chicken pieces, turning to coat well and marinate at least 2 hours, or overnight in refrigerator turning occasionally.

When ready to cook, place pieces on grill over low-medium coals and cook, turning and basting often until brown and tender.

Gosh, guess I was wrong. But I have bought a bottle of what is called huli-huli sauce (looks like soy) the last time I was in Honolulu. Maybe you mix it with the other ingredients to make the chicken??? BosunsWife - since you live in Hawaii (I think), can you comment on this? The bottle I bought had a yellow label & I got it at a grocery store in that big shopping center across (sort of) from Ali Moana park (probably really butchered the spelling of the name.)

Anyway, thanks for all the info. The chicken sounds wonderful Peggy, & I am anxious to try it.

Yellow label sounds like the Aloha brand. Personally I have not run across a bottled Huli Huli sauce, but I guess I could look. The guy on DH's ship makes his own from scratch and DH says its wonderful (the guy cooked some HH chicken the last time they were underway). As for pronunciation and spelling, its Ala Moana Center, but thats okay, I still mangle a lot of the hawaiian words here. Great shopping mall!
