View Full Version : Rust on my new Crepe Pan-what do I do?

I did a dumb thing. I bought a new crepe pan. It had a big sticker on it so someone told me to soak it. Well, I soaked it over night, and now it has splotches of rust all over it.
Can I save it somehow? I would have liked to get at least one batch of crepes out of it before I throw it away. :(
Thanks,
Dana

What is it made of? Is it an iron pan? If so, you can scrub the rust off and re-season it, and it won't hurt the pan at all.
Let me know.

I guess knowing what kind of metal it is would help. I just really don't know. But it is heavy as heck.

If it's rusting, my guess is that it's probably cast iron. If so, turn your oven on to 350, scrub the rust off and then smear the pan, outside and in, with solid shortening (you can use oil, but it's messier).
Put a cookie sheet or some sort of pan on the lower rack of the oven to catch drips, and put the pan on the upper rack and let it bake for 2 - 3 hours. Let it cool slightly, wash off the oil (you can use soap if you like, but dry it thoroughly). This seasons the pan and it'll be fine.
Incidentally, you can do this again and again, as you need to.

Works every time, rub in the kosher salt with a little water. The rust should come right off. Then season it and you are set. :)

Thanks, Svadhistana.
Diana, it is definitely not cast iron. It's like some kind of steel. Anyway, I will work on it tonight and let you know.

Same difference. The seasoning should work for cast iron or steel; any metal that rusts.
