Hi,

There seems to be some question about whether Canola Oil is good for a person to use or not.

I would like your opinion.

Canola Oil -- Bad for you? -- Fact or Fiction?

Canola oil is GOOD for you. That rumor that is circulating is false, based on a tiny tidbit of truth, stretched far, far beyond reality. Maybe someone has a link to somewhere that can explain it with the particulars.....but enjoy your canola oil, Ed, and don't worry!

I read something very recently, in my local paper perhaps, that declared the canola oil warnings that have been floating about the internet to be a hoax. There are several sites on the web dedicated to debunking the crazy myths and urban legends that are constantly circulating the internet via e-mail chain letters.

Here's a link to one of those sites with a pretty good write up about the canola oil myth:

Good for you. Other than olive oil, its the only oil in my cupboard.

I read somewhere that Canola Oil has a lower smoking point than vegetable oil, so when you're going to be frying hot (like in a cast iron skillet) you should be using vegetable oil instead. Personally, I thought it was a bunch of hooey, 'cause I only have Canola Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil in my cupboard for regular use, and there hasn't been much smokin' yet! :D

Hi,

Thanks to all of you fine people and great cooks for the input, I feel much better about the Canola Oil in the cupboard now.

I did look up the links mentioned and also another one for Urban Legends at http://www.snopes.com and found some good information.

Thanks again, I really do appreciate all the help.

Happy Cooking,

Ed
