View Full Version : Conclusions on the cookbook swap idea

Thanks to everyone for all their feedback on the Cookbook Swap idea, it was all really positive and I loved hearing all your great ideas. However, I don’t think we have enough brave souls willing to do a "surprise" style swap where you don’t know what you’re getting. Not that I blame anyone - god forbid someone ends up with "101 Ways to Cook Spam" (not that any of you would have such a thing in your collections but you know what I mean!). Without a good number of people we just wouldn’t have the variety we’d need to make sure everyone got something they’d want. As someone said, the organizer could take the heat for any bad swaps – and I for one want to stay in y’all’s good graces!
BUT – by and large everyone seemed to have something to offer and were really interested in trying to help each other out by giving their unused books a new home, which was great to see. So I think the best thing would be for someone to just start a new thread posting what they have to offer and what is on their cookbook "wish list" and others can begin posting the same. Then people can just contact each other and try to work out individual swaps. (Unless someone has a more organized way to do this kind of thing, maybe there is a better way?)

Thanks for all your feedback and maybe we should still keep the idea of a surprise-style swap in mind for another time – we could have a fun theme like candles, or soap, or bath stuff, etc. (which would be safe because no one could get too upset about what they received.) Maybe we could think of it near the holidays – and it sounds like RobinC even has experience planning that sort of thing.

Anyway – go forth and swap cookbooks and hopefully we can help each other out, save a little money, and get a new cookbook or two at the same time!

Peeps :)

One obvious tip: If you're unsure you want to swap for a particular cookbook, look it up on Amazon. See what's in it and what others have said about it.

Would it be best to post on the Food board so more people see it, or on the Other Stuff board, so the thread doesn't get lost?

I guess we can each post a list of what we have (or what we would like) and then go back and edit it once that book is gone.

Test run, anyone?

I'm adventurous and willing to jump into the deep end of the pool!

I have a copy of the Moosewood Cookbook (paperback, revised edition - 1992) that I don't use and which is in excellent condition. My sweetie's idea of acceptable vegetables: corn and carrots (and don't even think about slipping him any green ones!) so I don't use the Moosewood very often.

If anyone has a CL annual in similar condition that they'd be willing to part with (1997, 1998, 1999?) in exchange, let me know. I don't have any of the annuals and this would be a great way for me to try one out and decide whether to add on a room to house back issues of the magazines or trade them in for annuals.

Peeps, I'll keep you posted...

I am not at home this weekend (visiting my parents in MI) but I know I have the Moosewood Daily Specials book that has never been used (I have two copies of it - one for me and hopefully one for one of you!). I also have Linda's Kitchen, written by Linda McCartney that I would be willing to part with. The recipes look good, but with all the CL recipes I like to try, I just never use it. Another one I could part with is Soups, by Barbara Kafka? I will have to verify the authors name. This is a very beautiful book, but I just don't use it. I'm sure there are others on my shelf, but to keep the discussion going, these are the three I'm sure I have and that I can part with.

I would take cookbooks on vegetarian cooking, pasta or rice cookbooks, bread cookbooks (no bread machine though), and I would love to have an Asian cooking cookbook (Asian vegetarian would be really cool!). Also, any of the CL annuals would be welcome.

Let me know if anyone wants to trade, and when I get back home (later this week) I will go through my shelves and see if there are anymore I could part with.

I jsut bought the Cooking Light Quick and Easy cookbook from Costco. There are maybe 10 recipes I'd like to try, but those I can photocopy. I'd definately be willing to part with it.

Here is what I have to swap at this time:

Cooking Light 1995

Cooking Light Five Star Recipes

Bobby Flay's Bold American Food

The Best American Recipes 2000

Weight Watcher's Complete Cookbook and Program Basics (Copyright 1994)

The Hayday County Market Cookbook by Kim Rizk

All of these are hardcover and either not used or barely used.

I'm interested primarily in vegetarian cookbooks, nothing too "gourmet" with a ton of strange ingredients. But I'm open to options!
