Couperine - if it's not too late, my EDD is 10/14/09.
Is something funky going on with the boards or is just not wanting to let me view or post things? I've had a lot of trouble getting on.
Welcome Alexander and Graeme! And congratulations PoppyJ!
Thank you for the well-wishes last week. I'm really being good and just enjoying the pregnancy, trying not to worry too much about possibillities. I'm very glad to be in maternity clothes. I teach at a university and my students are definitely stealing glances, so I'm clearly showing and will probably need to tell them soon. Which is probably ultimately a good thing as I'm terrible with secrets. And I'll have something to blame fatigue and disorganization on too. ;)
There was lots of discussion in the March thread about testing. We did the nuchal testing last time and had the ultrasound part of it last week. The bloodwork wouldn't be accurate for us because of the twin, even though it didn't survive. We are very seriously considering amnio, which we did not do last time. I will be 39 on Friday and also have epilepsy, so my meds are associated with some risks. And I have a lot more reservations about having a special needs child with another little person in the house to care for as well than I probably would have been if it was our first and only responsibility. I have a really wonderful OB who I know will lay out our options but also give us her opinion if I ask, which I feel like I need.

Thanks for starting the new thread, Couperine! I joined in rather late this pregnancy, but it's still rather alarming to see my name already so close to the top!
I just wanted to add to the testing subject. NewMrsG, I'll admit we had similar reservations about a special needs child (and I'm talking about the most severe trisomies that can be detected w/ diagnostic testing) this go around b/c I kept thinking of the impact on DD's life. We really struggled with the testing issue and ended up having a CVS test at 13 weeks. We also struggled with the amnio decision last time, but ended up not doing it. If anyone wants to know more about the CVS test (or our thoughts on the testing issue), I'm happy to post about it here or you can PM me. For me, the test was quite similar to amnio (although there's a higher miscarriage rate with CVS b/c it's done earlier in the pregnancy) b/c they did go in abdominally to get a sample (due to placenta placement).
Oh, and NewMrsG, I hate to tell you this, but your students probably do have it all figured out by now. When I finally shared our news around 15 weeks, no one was surprised. I guess my expanding belly had given me away!

Laura, if you were surprised to see how high you were on the list, imagine my big eyes when I noticed where I am! ;)
Welcome Poppy! I hope you are doing well!
NewMrsG, the boards went through a few weeks of awfulness because the board has outgrown its space, and they plan to move the site to a bigger server at some point. It was rather hideous to try to read, much less post anything. I was showing something fierce before my first trimester was done, so I bet your students have a really good idea already. Apparently the body thinks "cool I've done this before" and stretches out quickly and willingly for you. The scary part is that I'm still getting more stretch marks in this pregnancy - I keep wondering how much more my belly will go!
All is well with the baby at 29 weeks - my blood pressure is holding steadyish, so I have another week to do normal things. Next week I get to do yet another 24 hour urine and schedule another ultrasound; I appreciate the concern my OB is giving me, but I wouldn't mind going a little longer before spending one morning a week at their office.
Off to feed the kids - have a great day all!

Checking in at 30 weeks ...
I hit 40 this year (I still can't believe it) and we opted to do whatever non-invasive testing to start, and then go from there. I had the nuchal testing done, with the follow-up blood work at 16 weeks. Based on the results of both that was as far as we went, excecpt for the 'big' 20 week u/s.
As for showing faster ... I am bigger now at 30 weeks with this one than I was at 38 weeks with Madeleine. Compared pictures. With Madeleine though, being so tall, I really didn't look like I was 40 weeks when I was, so I guess this is payback. :)
My ankles have started playing their disappearing act during the work week at night. I am eagerly awaiting Spring since my shirts are just barely covering the panel.
I will admit to being horribly uncomfortable at work sitting in my chair. Hits during the afternoon and I think it is because of the angle of my chair and having to sit up straight. It is like I am squishing my belly and the only was I feel relief is to slouch in my chair, but then I can't type very well.
My next appointment is not until a week from tomorrow, then I start every other week. With Madeleine they started me on NST every week at 32 weeks (due to my high bp) so we'll see if we go that route this time or not. I was also measuring over a week ahead, and I have had comments over the last week that my belly has sudddenly just popped out, so we'll see where I am measuring now.
I can't believe I am #3 on the list - but I still have 10 weeks to go! And so much to do ...

Announcing the arrival of my baby boy....
Max Hayden T. was born 3/31 at 7:28am weighing 8lbs and 20 inches long.
It was an extremely hard birth with complications afterwards, but the good news is we are both ok and healthy.

Welcome poppy!
I can echo Bawstinn's comments about showing sooner w/#2. One of Anna's preschool teachers asked me if I was having twins . They just found out last week, and maybe in their minds they think I've just finished my first trimester, when in fact I'm well into my second (week 18 now).
We have our anatomical ultrasound scheduled for the 24th, and I think we'll take Anna with us to see pictures of the baby. We're not going to find out whether it's a boy or girl. Interestingly, last night Anna made a reference to the baby as a her, then immediately corrected herself and repeated the sentence, using "it" instead.
FWIW, I'm due right around Labor Day.

I heard my baby's heartbeat for the first time last week. Poor hubby wasn't there and he was really bummed he missed it. We have an ultra sound this week though and he'll be there for that. We are both really excited to see the baby.
Alleycat

Jalapeno, isn't that the most amazing sound? :)
My Friday appt was rescheduled for this Thursday. I'm still on the fence with testing. And I'm really annoyed that my OB didn't mention the NT test to me. I'm a worry wart, so if we get anything questionable, I will worry for the next 20+ weeks.
One of my sorority sisters had all testing done, and all tests were negative for problems. They were devastated when their son was born with Down Syndrome, because they were completely unprepared for this based on their test results.
I realize her experience is very rare, but it still weighs on my mind. :(
My stomach has finally started to stick out! Last time I didn't show until 22 weeks; I just looked like I was getting chunky :p My maternity pants are still too big, and the Bella Band is really annoying. So I have one pair of jeans I can wear in public, and then lots of comfy workout pants at home. Ah, I look fantastic! LOL

scratch that. Last night Anna declared that the baby is a girl. She said "my Laura's baby Magdalena was a girl...," referring to a friend of ours who had a girl last summer. Laura didn't know either, and Anna told her mid-way it would be a girl.
My nephew, who correctly predicted his little sister and Anna as girls, says he thinks he needs a boy cousin on our side of the family.
This ought to be fun.

Congratulations Missi! I love the name Max. I hope you're continuing to recover and can check in.
I hit 13 weeks on Sunday - a huge relief to be past the first trimester, although my body still hasn't figured it out yet as I have morning, afternoon, evening and night-time sickness. Worse than with my daughter.
I am showing probably 6 weeks ahead of last time and in full-fledged maternity clothes. I still haven't told my students, but plan to on Tuesday next week. It'll be interesting to hear how many figured it out.
I meet with my OB tomorrow, which I'm very excited about. She was not my primary OB with my first pregnancy, but was part of the practice. My primary from before decided to stop the OB piece of her job and focus on gyn, so I was able to switch over to the new one - she's actually the OB who delivered my daughter and was just fantastic, so I'm really excited about it. I'm hoping she'll help us sort out whether or not to pursue the amnio.
I'm otherwise hanging in there with not much new to report (which is just fine with me!)

Min, my mother and your Anna think very much alike. When we finished the first ultrasound and called to tell her its a boy, she exclaimed,"Oh no, are you sure?! It just has to be a girl!" Needless to say, after 3 ultrasounds, I'm still very sure, and yet she still hopes when I update her on the current results.
Jori, it sounds like you really like your new OB - it always feels good to have one you trust. I'm glad you made it through your first trimester with flying colors (though that stinky morning sickness can go on through about 18 weeks)! Oh yes, totally forgot, but when I got pregnant this round, I was nauseous ALL the time and it was because I was on a different prenatal - just something to think about!
Alleycat, I don't think the earliest test with the ultrasound plus bloodwork is that standard yet; I had David almost a year ago, and I wasn't offered that test at all with him, unlike for this baby. Hopefully you fit into some pants you can wear in public soon!
Congratulations on hearing the heartbeat, Jalapeno! Always makes it more real for me.
Went in for yet another ultrasound and checkup yesterday at 30 weeks - all is well; baby continues to grow on or within a few days ahead of the expected growth curve, and he weighs about 3lbs 12oz right now. I feel a bit more relaxed about his growth and any possible complications now - it's still early, but 30 weeks is my personal comfort level with the odds. Ethan's teacher's aide looked shocked when I told her I was due mid-June; it would have hurt my feelings, but I really am bigger than I was when I delivered both boys. :) It looks like I'm stuck going weekly for blood pressure checks plus the various tests until I deliver - if it keeps me off bedrest, I'm there.
I hope all is well with everyone!

Congratluations Missi!
Not much going on here. I woke up on Monday morning and realized my bump was not directly underneath my chest anymore (making the girls look even bigger than they are) but actually about 2 inches below. I wonder if the little one has flipped or just did some rearranging.
Sleep is not going all that well. I get up 2-3 times a night to use the bathroom. I was just fallling back asleep, but it seems now I am also waking the baby when I get up and that is good for 20-30 minutes of gymnastics. Madeleine was more mellow than this one. She would do some lazy stretching. This one has delivered some nice sharp jabs to ribs and other body parts.
Just waiting until my appointment on Moday and dreading the scale. Our scale at home (digital) is not working properly. Changed the batteries but I can step on the scale 3 times, get 3 different weights in a 7 lb range. So, I see the belly getting bigger but have no idea how mych I weight. I hate being a slave to that #. I know I have gained less this time around than with Madeleine so I should be happy with that.
I think part of it was I was an empty pit with Madeleine. I could eat and eat. With this one, I can't eat much (one slice of pizza) before feeling full. Drink and eat at the same time and it is an uncomfortable full feeling.

I'm already experiencing the "feeling too full to eat but hungry all the time" feeling -- I hear you! I joked with DH last night that he needs to remind me when I go for a bowl of cereal at night that I feel horrible after I eat it. Made that mistake last night -- must remember how gross I felt afterwards.

Me too! Although during the day I can't seem to get full. It's harder at night.
I had a great OB visit last week - got to hear the heartbeat for the first time. I forgot how wonderfully reassuring that is. We discovered that I'm anemic, which is contributing to my fatigue, and is why I've been terribly short of breath (any physical exertion is really tiring for me, which has been really frustrating). Of course it's tough to try to treat it right now because the supplements have always been nausea-inducing for me and I'm still really nauseated, and it's hard to try to manage my diet when right now I'm just glad to get anything down. I'm trying to munch on almonds and dried fruit throughout the day. And of course now it's Passover, so I'm limited food-wise as it is!
I also gained 6 pounds since my previous appt. :o
We also scheduled an amnio. Although I'm really, really torn.

NewMrsG, I'm glad you had such a great appt! I love hearing the heartbeat :) Isn't it funny how we KNOW we shouldn't worry about weight gain every month, and yet so many of us do? My scale at home says I've gained 6 pounds total, but according to the doc's office (they admit their scales are not calibrated from one exam room to another) I've gained 9. I like my number better.
For the anemia, since supplements make you sick, what did they suggest? What about using a cast-iron skillet? I know it's not much iron, but I would imagine every bit helps.
The testing decisions are so difficult to make.

Probably had the fastest doctor appointment ever this morning AND I was called in 5 minutes EARLY.
Weight gain was good, bp was good, baby still measuring more than a week ahead and is already head down. I suspected there had been a flip but it was nice to hear that there was. Start my appointments every 2 weeks now and will have a NST with the next one.
Jori - I am taking iron supplements too since I was borderline at my iron test. Are you taking them with food? I take mine with supper since it is supposed to be taken at the opposite time of day than the prenatal.
I am really hoping the warm up later this week means that the warmer weather is here to stay. I am really sick of these winter maternity clothes.
As for the weight gain ... I can't find the time to stress over something I don't have all that much control over. I am not eating much at all, what I am craving are fruits and vegetables and I have no interest in sweets at all - and I still gained 3 pounds this past month. My doctor is really good about NOT berating people about their weight gain and she says your body truly just does what it needs to in order to produce a healthy baby.

I'm so glad things are going well Maria! I get to do an NST next week as well!
The weight gain thing is hard for me right now because I so badly want to have weighed less to start with so I wouldn't be so worried about how my weight affects my blood pressure. I know I can't do anything about it yet, but I'll continue to hope the 3rd time is the charm, and at least 20 lbs will come off after the baby is born and the 8 jillion ounces of IV fluids clear the system.
So 31 weeks here, and the baby is well. My BP is creeping up now, so we're adding a wee dram of labetalol tonight; I'm praying for no side effects and that it makes me more able to do household chores without taking so many darn breaks to let my BP come down. I think my BP cuff and I have a hate/hate relationship some days! :)
Best wishes for continued growth and healthy babies for all!

I am back from my trip and getting back to "normal" life if there is such a thing. I had an appointment on Monday and it went well. We heard the baby's heartbeat and scheduled our ultrasound for next month. We are really excited to find out the sex of our baby (and cannot believe that we are already at that stage!!!) We did not find out the sex with our first one so it is fun to do it the other way around.
I do have a question for people who are having their second (or third) child. Are there any books you would recommend reading to help prepare us and our DD for baby number two?
Couperine
04-15-2009, 02:59 PM
Oh I do hope you had a great trip Poppy! I keep reading travel magazines and drooling. It must be exciting to schedule that ultrasound!
I bought one book to read Ethan for prepping for David's arrival - It's Quacking Time by Martin Waddell. We had checked it out from the library, and it gave a nice way to introduce siblings and other family into the equation. I never read any advice books for the 2nd or 3rd babies, but I've never gone wild on advice books since most of it comes down to what you are comfortable with as a parent.
If you have another girl, please don't feel you have to suffer with the same clothes that didn't work right for your DD. I joyfully donated or threw away all the clothes that annoyed me since I knew what I liked for baby clothes by that point. I still have barely used onesies that I didn't donate that I will cull out when I move all the old clothes to the new baby's room.
Time to finish up David's birthday cupcakes - I can't believe he's one today! Time sure flies.

Poppy - I'm really glad you asked the question about a book for soon-to-be older siblings. I'm also curious to hear general tips/advice for things to do to ease her into it and while at the hospital, etc. I used to watch a TLC show called Baby Story, years ago, which chronicled a family's pregnancy and birth of a new baby. Lots of the families on the show had kids already and they always did something to help the older kids feel better about the new baby. But now I can't remember much of what they did.
Maria - I have been extremely nauseated this time around (I was with Macy too, but this is worse), and have been vomiting most days. It's particularly worrisome for me because I take anti-seizure meds that I have to keep down. So given that I've had so much trouble with iron supplements in the past (no matter how I take it), we've decided it's not worth it to try unti my nausea dissipates. I've been eating almonds and dried fruit and trying to increase my red meat intake.
I'm also a bit in disbelief that it's almost at the point where we can figure out the baby's gender, which I'm really excited about. I hit 15 weeks on Sunday, so just 3 weeks away now.
I told my students a few days ago, and it's been fun to have them know and be excited for me. One of my former students actually sent flowers to me, which made me cry.
I had a big scare last night. We went to dinner and got a caesar salad. I didn't think to ask about the possibility of raw egg in the dressing until I'd finished it, and there was. Apparently non-organic and non-pasteurized. I have fortunately survived the night, so can stop worrying about salmonella. I could just have kicked myself.
Enough of a novel from me! Hope everyone has a good weekend - it's gorgeous weather out here now, I just wish I had the strength to walk around more and enjoy it.

Hope everyone is doing well.
NewMrsG--Sorry about the raw egg scare, but glad you aren't experiencing any effects. I had a similar pistachio scare recently, but thankfully it didn't amount to anything.
Happy belated birthday to Couperine's David! Hope he enjoyed the cupcakes!
I'm now 24 weeks and had my 1-hour glucose test, which I failed miserably. I had gestational diabetes with DD, so it's really no surprise. I was just hopeful for different results this time. Has anyone else had GD with their first, then failed the 1-hour test w/ a subsequent pregnancy and just decided to forgo the 3-hour test altogether? I told my dr. I wasn't sure I wanted to take the 3-hour test if I failed the 1-hour this time. I'd almost rather assume I'm diabetic and modify my diet accordingly. I can't picture fasting, feeling queasy, having 4 blood draws, and waiting around for 3 hours only to find out I'm diabetic. My dr. said it's nice to know definitively, but she seems ok with my not doing the 3-hour. Any thoughts?
I'm also measuring 2 cm small, so I'm hopeful that's nothing to worry about. The dr. said it could be b/c the baby is horizontal, which makes sense b/c I often feel movement on either side. There's still plenty of time, but I sure hope she turns!
Enjoy your weekend!

NewMrsG - I'm so glad everything turned out ok after your scare. Hopefully you only have a few more weeks of nausea left.
Laura - I haven't shared your experience, but I'd rather know for certain and take the 3 hour test anyway. Good luck with what you decide - I think I'd be tempted to cheat further down the road if I didn't know for sure.
Thanks for the good wishes on David's birthday - it was small but fun. The cupcakes turned out really well too!
I had forgotten this, but when Ethan came to visit me in the hospital the first time after David was born, we had a present waiting for him from David. He can still tell you all about his superheroes that David gave him - it was very important to him! Currently he's more worried about not seeing me while in the hospital - he really wants to be with us and has been much more hands on the belly and talkative with the baby.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

I had my ultrasound this week and found out it's a boy! Everything looked healthy too, which took some worry out of my mind. I think DH wanted a boy more than he let on - he's been really happy. Now we have to start thinking of names - we had a girl name picked out, but we have differences in opinion on boy names ;)
Anyhow, we are also trying to decide on paint for the baby's room and I'm trying to make a list of things to register for. I'm feeling great so I'm hoping the second trimester lasts as long as possible!

Anyone here have a low-lying, posterior placenta at the mid-way ultrasound? Midwife was unconcerned and I'm not overly so, just checking. Everything else was great - Anna came with us and enjoyed seeing pics of the baby. We didn't find out the sex, but I have a hunch :D

Delurking to say that I had a low-lying placenta, not quite placenta previa but close. Glad to hear the ultrasound went well!

Not too much going on here. Had my 33+ week appointment and non-stress test this morning. I am starting to retain some fluid, but my bp was hanging out at 118/80 and there was no protein in my urine so the doctor was happy. All looked good with the test. Baby was not all that cooperative with moving but they got the readings they needed.
She wants me back every week for the non-stress tests but that was expected. At least it is all non-evasive until we hit week 36 with the Group B Strep test and what I am assuming is my first internal exam (why would they do one and not the other?).
Feeling good. Madeleine and I went shopping in Madison (stayed overnight) with a friend and had fun. Came home Saturday night and started some Spring cleaning yesterday. Only managed to get our bedroom done (Madeleine yelled at me for standing on the bed to clean the ceiling fan) but at least I feel I am making some progress. I am sore today, especially the sides of my belly - kind of the same feeling the day after you do a bunch of ab exercises. Doctor said you feel a lot more aches with subsequent pregnancies and I should probably do less. I don't think I really did all that much though!
Congrats on your boy, Jadengro!

Maria, your BP number is so gorgeous! I forgot to drink some OJ before my nst last week so he wasn't as active as usual, but we got good results too. Hopefully your nst's continue to go well, and I envy your energy - spring cleaning in this house would really be leftover cleaning from winter. :o
I hit 33 weeks on Saturday, and this week's visit is an u/s plus follow-up visit to discuss results and see if the Labetalol is still doing its job. I do feel better with the addition of it - don't tire out quite as easily when doing simple tasks like dishes.
I hope everyone else is doing well!

Quite here at 24 weeks. I'm beginning to dislike my ob/gyn practice, though. My appt last week, I was kept waiting for an hour - they thought I was barely 21 weeks, they didn't have my 20 week ultrasound and i was lectured on gaining 1 pound. Really? I 23 weeks, I pound is too much?

Min, I'm glad the u/s looked good (no experience with your concern though); I'm taking Ethan with me to an u/s tomorrow - any tips for preschooler management? He's totally excited and keep telling me things he wants to tell the baby when we "see" him. :)
DH came with us to the appt. Our U/S suite has a sofa for lounging, so Anna & DH enjoyed the show on the flat-screen and I had to twist my neck around to watch. She was pretty much captivated by the whole experience. Every so often she'd giggle, especially when she spotted the baby's feet, crossed, soles facing the screen. "Toes!" was what she said.

Congrats on the boy, jadenegro!
linsley, I'm sorry you're not happy with your OB. I had that experience last time, too. It was frustrating during prenatal care. But, the OB as fantastic during delivery, so I went back to him. Hopefully, you'll find the same to be true in your case.
Maria, sounds like you're progressing at a healthy pace. That's great news!
My ultrasound will be at 22 weeks, because the imaging office is really backed up. I'm 19 weeks now, so we have to wait a bit longer. DH really wanted to find out gender last time, but I refused :p. So I'm letting him decide this time -- I'm guessing he'll go for it!
