I think I read in a post today that someone already has their September CL? Am I Hallucinating ? The mail man has already been here for today, so looks like I am out of luck for today, tomorrow is another day though........ Can't wait:)

I've been having so much fun with this issue and recipes that are being shared, that I actually forgot that this is the week I usually receive my issue. Wow, that doesn't happen too often. I Hope it's just as good as August has been.

I got the Sept. Bon Appetit yesterday and I usually get CL a week or 2 later. Any time now.

I can't believe it is already time for the September issue!! I still have so many recipes I want to try from August.

It seems that we usually get ours right around our supper club time (which is Sat...)

Katy-
I thought the same thing, but when I re-read it, I realized that this person had received the September Bon Appetit.

So, last night I go to the gym and there was the September issue on the magazine rack! When I see it there, I usually receive it a week later. Of course, I can never resist peeking at it before I get it at home!
Anyways there is a whole spread on Supper Clubs. Our own kwormann is quoted in there! Kwormann- you're famous now! (I thought it was pretty exciting seeing your name in print since I remembered your name from the BB!) I can't wait to get my issue since I just joined one and a couple other BBers and I are forming another. (I didn't get the chance to actually read the article.)
So, everyone be on the lookout because it is coming!

Anyone else see this issue yet? I'm wanting reviews please! I'm usually so excited about an issue when I get it that I just have to run out to the store and make something that day. So impatient I am.
Also - I think that it should be the responsibility of whoever should receive their issue first to cook everything in the magazine and post reviews so the rest of us know exactly what to make first.

Just got the September CL today... which is awfully nice because my August issue was WAY late... I think it looks great too - though i've just barely skimmed it...

The cover is a Blueberry Peach Galette - I know I'll definitely try it - it looks sooo good...

Oh man, I'm doing backflips already!!!!!! Please give me a short run down of what the sections are, if you don't mind!!! I LOVE knowing what's coming and getting all excited about it!!! (And for those of you who prefer not to know, don't read any futher!!!:D ) Thanks Janet!!!

Grace -
Ok here goes... I guess the theme is Supper Club special - so there's a complete meal for each of four themes:
1. On The Edge - this fusion menu combines flavors of Morocco, Thailand and France - such things as Citrus Chicken Tagine, Spice Crusted Shrimp with Remoulade Sauce, Roasted Asparagus with Balsamic Browned Butter etc...
2. Vegetarian Country French - for a multicourse buffet infused with tastes of the South of France - Endive stuffed with Goat Cheese and Walnuts, Honey-Roasted Pears with Sweet Yogurt Cream Olive and Onion Tapenade etc. etc...
3. Continental Class - Pistachio-Encrusted Rack of Lamb, Fresh Berry Pavlovas etc.
4. Tried and True - Wild Mushroom Risotto, Bourbon Glazed Salmon, Jack Cheese Breadsticks, Layered Bean Dip and the cover Galette
another section is The Cooking of South America - Brazillian Fish Stew, Grilled Flank Steak with Chimichurri, Baked Beef Empanadas, etc.
a section on pine nuts with Risotto Cakes with Pine Nuts, Pear cake with pine nuts...
Gosh a bunch of stuff in there. Hope this isn't too much information....

Oh Janet, thank you!!! It sounds like a WONDERFUL issue!!! Thanks so mucy for taking the time to type all that out for me......I'm getting so excited! Time for me to bribe the mailman again, I guess! He probably looks forward to getting me my CL more than I do!!! :D
It sounds though like it will give us all a lot of great ideas for our supper clubs!

WOWIE...WOW....WOW!! September sounds grrrrrrrreat! It may come at a perfect time too since a Supper Club is forming here in the Boston area. :D I just received my Martha Stewart Living so I should be getting CL in another week or two. :D

Grace,
Sure, no problem... Like a lot of people I haven't been too inspired by several of the recent issues, but there's a lot I think I'll make out of this one... It's about time.
Hope everyone gets them soon... I don't want to spoil it for anyone.
Janet
WOOOOHOOOO!!!! How will I wait to read it? I really should be prepping for the class I'm teaching Fall '01! I know--It will be my reward........write a lecture, read a section.
How will I ever get to all my August recipes? Is September early? Seems like I'm usually wondering where the next issue is before it shows up. Maybe it's joining this board that kept me from missing it? ;)

How much do I bribe the postman with?

I just went to the mailbox, expecting the usual compliment of flyers, catalogs and numerous credit card applications. I opened the door to find just one item, that looked to be a catalog. I thought "is that all".... upon pulling it out, I found the September issue. It was upside down, and has a cover ad for the annual on it so I did not recognize it as the treasure it is! :)
I haven't really looked at it at all yet but am looking forward to slowly reading it cover to cover in the tub tonight! Gina

Pears? Yum! Risotto? YUM!

Gina - is that YOU along with kwormann quoted in the supper club article?? I don't have it in front of me, but I think I remember your name being in there...
Gina O
08-17-2001, 03:01 PM
Yes, that is me :) I am pretty excited about it! Although, just to set the record straight (which I also asked the writer to do when I gave permission to use the quote) it is a St. Louis supper club. Not that anyone on the planet knows where Warrenton is except those in the area, I feel badly about it since all of the other members are in St. Louis and I am about 30 miles away. Gina

I got my issue yesterday. I was really surprised also. It looks great. I want to try the Pork Cassoulet. It is a reader recipe that is lightened. It looks great. Lots of meat for the males in my family! :p
Gina O
08-18-2001, 08:14 AM
Lynn- I agree about wanting to try the pork cassoulet... it sounds great. I have wanted to make a cassoulet for a long time but was somewhat turned off by all the extremely high fat ingredients. I hope it is as good as it sounds.
I have already made the Black-Bottom Banana Cream Pie.... I found it on Mastercook last winter and made it for my dad (a huge banana cream pie fan). He and my step-mom said it was better than some they had recently had in a really nice restaurant. I had forgotten about it. Thanks to the reminder, I will make it again soon. Gina

Gina,
Just so's you know, there is a Warrenton, Texas (known for it's antique "fairs" in April and October, if you ever use the maps online, it's amazing how many "towns" or "cities" have the same name), but I think it is "way" cool that y'all are quoted in the magazine, after all, I had live down my "spray cheese" quote (more power to you!)

Nothing here yet in Hawaii (not surprised), but I spoke with my mom in northwestern Washington State and she got her September issue in today's mail. She was just headed outside to the deck with a cold ice tea and her CL when I called her.

September CL came in the mail today 8/18.
:-/ I do have to say that at first run through, I'm a bit disappointed. If you're not in a supper club, there's not a whole lot else... like no Inspired Vegetarian (helloooooo... where'd that monthly feature go? Maybe it went buh-bye due to the vegetarian supper club menu?)! I will go through it again and did mark a couple of things. Sigh.

I usually receive mine around the 23rd, but I am not looking forward to it this time. I have yet to try even one recipe from August. With being on vacation, and now DH away for a few days, I will have to hide Sept. if it arrives on time.

Just got my September issue yesterday. I think I died and went to heaven! At first glance, this looks like one of the most inspiring CL's yet.
As others have mentioned, I love Cassoulet and have been wanting to make some, but hesitant about the fatty ingredients. I am making this one TODAY- since I am traveling all week and won't be able to test new recipes. WAHHHH. I will post a review.

Sneezles - LOL Ahhh, the joys of spray cheese. I am still eating my stale mini-marshmallows!!! But, am very glad to have a much better quote this time! :)
Browneye- I can't wait to hear how the Cassoulet turns out. Tomorrow I am going to make the Blueberry-Peach Galettes as a welcome home suprise for my SO. I too will post! Gina

Lisa,
The same thought crossed my mind! But I've also noticed they've had quite a few "new" vegetarian columnists over the last year or two; seems like every 3 or 4 months there's a new one! Maybe the current one quit/left again....

So... My mom (in AZ) calls me and tells me that she just got the new CL and thought the cover recipe looked sooo great that she was on her way out to get the ingredients to try it, her first recipe ever out of CL. I (not having received my issue in NYC) asked her to describe it... Unbelievably, I had blueberries and peaches ready for a flan that I was going to make (or else lose the fruit ) but I could not find the creme fraiche called for. Naturally, I had her read the recipe on the phone to me so that I could attempt to try this recipe. It's really good!
My only complaint is that next time, I would probably put a little cornstarch in it, as the peach juice ran out when I cut the tart and sogged my crust. Now, I just have to see the picture and recipe of what I thought I made!

Not yet in NW PA... but I am waiting with baited breath.
Yesterday at the mailbox when the mailman arrived:
ME: "WELL?!! DO YOU HAVE IT????"
MAILMAN:  "No, ma'am... sorry... um... maybe Monday..." (scurries away quickly - doesn't look back - jumps in his little jeep and peels out...)
ME: <sigh> ...and back into the house...

Can't wait to get my issue! The Vegetarian Country French menu sounds to die for.
I'll be terribly disappointed if the Inspired Vegetarian is gone for good... I love that column... but maybe it was just left out of this issue to make room for the special supper club article?
p.s. I got my Sept. issue when I got home from work! Those vegetarian recipes look truly amazing!

Eva, just FYI, TJ's sells frozen whole asparagus for $1.99 a 1 lb. package. It's good stuff. I always keep the basement freezer stocked with several bags.
Now this is weird- here in Victoria I can buy lovely organic asparagus for 3.99/lb Cdn.- that is about 1.50 US. I think the asparagus is from California and its not on sale- same price everywhere!! Come north young women come north!!

i thought the issue looked great overall, but when i sat down to pick out recipes i'm actually going to try, my list was pretty short :( maybe i need to join a supper club...

Has anyone in CT or Mass gotten their issue yet. Still waiting:(
No CL in my mailbox here in KY yet. And I can't say that I am waiting patiently, either. It seems that every day I go to the mailbox and there is a magazine, but guess who it is for--DH. I come in and plop it down in front of him and say here is one of your magazines AGAIN! Where oh Where is my CL?

jazzcat,
I'm in Southern NH and I haven't received mine yet either. I'm on vacation next week and I'm really hoping it shows up tomorrow.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us, and all the others waiting impatiently in the northeast corner.
Got my CL last week, and frankly Iam not that crazy about this issue. I made the pork cassoulet this week , and we did not care for it. The pork was dry and tough. Pork loin does not need to be cooked for all that time. Perhaps a less lean cut of pork would have brought better results. Vicky:(
Still waiting in Northern California, nothing good in my mailbox! I was just at the grocery store picking up stuff for dinner, and it's not on the newsstand yet. I just wanted a peek at the cover - guess I'm out of luck!

I can't believe this, but I think my subscription may have run out!! I don't save those outer paper 'covers' on my CL's that tell my renewal date, and I just got the invoice yesterday saying 'Thanks for renewing your subscription', but I have no idea when it runs (or ran) out! Has everyone in Western Washington received theirs already?? If they have then I may have to buy one, but you know the DAY that I buy it I'll receive one in the mail!
Is there a way to check my subscription online??

Hi Gina,
Thanks! I'm treasurer and founding member of a flying club and I found it when I was looking for something to put on the membership certificates. I love it, too.
Nice to see that there are others with such diverse hobbies as mine: I fly, I cook and I make quilts on an old treadle machine. How can I love an old treadle sewing machine and an airplane?
Perhaps we could chat more about this via email. This may be presumptuous, but I don't this this line is going to be of interest to many others on the BB. The percentage of the population with a pilot's license is pretty low, and female pilots are more rare still! Feel free to contact me via my email address in my profile.

Not to be greedy...(though I admit I am), my first impression of the September issue is that the quantity and variety of recipes is lacking. It seems like most of the other issues have almost double the number of recipes. On the other hand, my list of "must trys" is quite extensive, so perhaps they we going for quality instead of quantity??? Time will tell!

There seems to be fewer recipes.
I am also feeling a bit like I'm seeing the same kinds of recipes over and over again with a teeny variation to make it "different". Maybe it's me feeling blah with the rest of the summer to go...I for one am anxious for fall and winter cooking.
I may be in the minority but how many kebab recipes does one really need? Cucumber salads?
I also feel with the supper club issue that there were more "entire meals" inc. appetizer and dessert than usual...seems appetizer heavy but I could be wrong here.
Then again, I have enjoyed the few Sept recipes I have made so maybe I should just be quiet :o

I've also noticed fewer recipes but I'm going to take advantage of the lull by going back to the older issues to follow up on some of the recipes that got put on the back burner when a new issue arrived and stole my attention.
And Jewel , I'm with you. As soon as the weather starts to give the slightest hint of autumn (I've already seen some bright red maple leaves) I get anxious to start on soups and stews. My sweetheart is waiting for a cool day so I'll make a batch of last January's (?) Wild Rice and Roasted Chicken soup. One of our favorites when paired with some crusty bread.

Just some thought on the September issue:
I average about 15 "to try" recipes a month from any given CL; and I actually make an average of 8 of these in that month (I just calculated this from a working list on my computer). September was dead on average in terms of interest- I've marked 15 that really caught my eye.
It seems to me of late that many of the meat dishes are variations on a similar theme. Since I am trying to prepare fewer meat-based dishes each week, I am gravitating towards the grains and veggies. This month the Wild Mushroom Risotto, Paraguayan Corn Bread, Bree’s Lentil-Tomato Soup, Butternut Squash, Apple, Leek Gratin, Tomatoes Provencale, Carmelized Onion and Red Pepper Tart and Creamy Polenta with Warm Tomato Compote all made the cut; the Citrus Chicken Tagine is the only meat dish on my list! These are all such different, interesting and appealing recipes (to me). I really appreciate the variety and originality therein.
I was disappointed at first with fewer recipes, but the I realized I had more than enough to keep me busy. I really enjoyed the Dinner Club menus format, to perhaps copy in the future, and I am SOOOO behind on dishes I'd like to make from previous months and BB posts- I appreciate the break!
