View Full Version : Links in some threads not working?

I just did a search on sweet potatoes and it brought up many threads. However, when I open these threads, the links within these threads do not work. Is this because of the move? Is there any way to get them working again? It sure would be nice to have the links working to save a bit of time.

Here's one of the threads where the links do not work: http://www.cookinglight.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7253&perpage=30&pagenumber=2

In addition, when I tried to search the boards (Great Food and Popular Threads) for that particular thread, I could not find it anywhere. Am I doing something wrong?

Dunno if this is the definitive answer, but here's my take on the situation, Alysha. This link, for example, one of the ones in the thread you mention: http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/Forum1/HTML/006109.html is a link from the old board, which no longer exists. New links will start with "www.cookinglight.com/vbb... " Any link you find which starts with "www.cookinglight.com/bbs... " is the old format.

Insofar as the other question is concerned, are you clicking "search titles only?" You're gonna love my answer to this one, by the way. It appears that because the originator of the thread misspelled "potato" as "potatoe" it doesn't come up in the search unless you either misspell it as well, or if you use a wildcard and search thusly: "sweet potato*"

Quirky, eh?

Hi Gail, thanks for your answer. I'm just now seeing this!

So, does this mean the link is unavailable, or does this mean I could still find the link by changing the address around? I just tried substituting the "vbb" for the "bbs", but still did not get the link. I guess I thought all the threads from the old board would still be available? Or am I just missing something??

I haven't done a study of it, but I'd be willing to wager they're all DOA. In other words, yes, the links are gone-- there's probably no simple adjustment to be made. To further complicate matters, remember that there used to be three archives, two of which now have been reinstated back into the active forums, so those addresses would create an automatic issue right there. Then there's also The Dead Zone (that period between February 17 and March 23 where all the threads have been lost) to add to the equation.

As a rule of thumb, I'd say it's prudent just to assume that anytime you spot a link with a "ubb" in it you'll need to start from scratch and run a search for the new address. Think of it this way: your old neighbors are still alive and well, they've just moved to a new home.

Thanks again (even if I'm still left frustrated by the result ;) )! Do they pay you yet? :D

Gosh Gail, I have a real issue with being out done and well, you are just too good! :D

Thanks Gail for chiming in on this one. And yes, of course I agree with her. We were so excited to find software that would "import" all of our old threads - as we thought for sure that would be a bear. The problem though is that it won't "re-index" all of the old links within threads themselves.

But Gail is right - the old threads are there, they just have a new address. So searching for them again is probably the only option at this point.

Thanks!
