My 3yo DS bonked his head on a doorframe at bedtime on Sunday night. He was probably somewhere between a walk in a run (as in, he was probably going faster than a walk but not a full-out run) when he bonked his head. We put ice on it and gave him some tylenol and he has been totally normal since then (eating, sleeping, playing, talking, going potty, etc).
I noticed this morning a very small spot of blood in his left eye, which is maybe 2 or 3 inches below the bruise on his head (the bruise, by the way, is about the size of a quarter, except more oval-shaped). The spot on his eye is about the size of a point of a pencil.
I called the doctor, and they want to see him, but they don't have any appointments until 3:45 this afternoon. I'm just wondering if he really needs to be seen today, wouldn't they want me to come earlier, and send me to the ER/urgent care if they were really that concerned about a head injury? I don't like to go running to the doctor for every little bump and bruise. At the same time, though, if he needs to be seen, I want him to be seen. Sometimes it is hard to tell.
They seem to have a new policy where I can't seem to talk to a nurse directly, I have to tell the receptionist what is happening and she will talk to the nurse and put me on hold. I don't really like that, because I feel like I can't get the guidance I"m asking for. I have called to talk to a nurse 2 or 3 times recently and have gotten this where I have to tell the receptionist my problem and then talk to the nurse through her.
So, I don't know exactly what my question is. I feel like if they were really concerned about a head injury they would either make me see someone else at the office who could take him earlier (not our usual doctor) or they would make me go to the ER, rather than make me wait 7 hours. I guess I don't know if I really need to go today or not, and I hate wasting the money and the time for a doctor visit that is not really necessary.
