We've been anxiously awaiting the release of You Can Count On Me on video, since it never made it to our theatre. It came out last year actually, but in pretty limited release, since it's not an epic adventure nor does it feature Julia Roberts.

It stars Laura Linney (she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this role), Mark Ruffalo, Matthew Broderick. Just a wonderful, deep, funny, loving movie about sister-brother bonds, a woman growing up, life in a small town.

A great excuse to stay inside and enjoy the air conditioning (or numerous fans, in our case).

And not to diss Julia Roberts- we finally saw The Mexican and loved it!!

Any other off-the-beaten-path movie recommendations?

Thanks for the rec! We're always looking for great movies to rent. (I'm one of those weird people who hate watching movies at the theater).

I haven't seen much lately, but we did finally get around to seeing Finding Forrester over the weekend. I really enjoyed it.

As for off-the-beaten-path movies, these flicks aren't new, but I still keep trying to push them onto my friends because I think they're great:

The Red Violin
Raise the Red Lantern
The King of Masks

[I'm very into Chinese films, so there will be likely be a disproportional number of them on my list, but there are so many really great ones.]

I know there are others, but I need more time to think on it...

I also recently saw Finding Forrester and liked it. I love Sean Connery, so I'll see anything in which he stars. Not a typical role for him, but still very powerful and well acted by all.

Has anyone seenChocolat or Woman on Top? Since both involve food, I figured who better to ask than the fine folks at the CL BB! (though I may have to wait for DH to be out of town as these aren't quite up his alley.)

Eva,

I've have been meaning to see Raise the Red Lantern for ages now...Loved the Red Violin

Andrea,

Chocolat is precious. Not worthy of an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, IMHO (Wonder Boys helloooo? How could this have been overlooked!), but still a very good watch. Johnny Depp looks good enough to eat and Juliette Binoche is one of my favorites; it was refreshing to see her in happy movie for a change.

We loved loved loved Woman on Top Quirky, sweet movies rank high in this house. The soundtrack has been getting pretty heavy rotation this summer (perfect summer music: samba, bossanova).

Also, check out Me, Myself and I (No NOT the Jim Carey thing); it's an Australian film, with the actress who played Muriel's friend in Muriel's Wedding. It's funny, sweet, modern, happy ending; this same actress (what is her name!!) is in another wonderful, poignant British film -My Son, The Fanatic- about a Pakistani taxi driver watching his son become heavily involved in Islam, which he abandoned upon emigrating to the UK; the actress-whose-name-escapes-me plays a prostitute who falls in love with the taxi driver. Not light stuff, but good Sunday morning fare. These are both out on video.

I saw Chcolat in the theater and am anxiously waiting to rentit so DH can see it too. I really enjoyed it. Have been looking at You Can COunt on Me, so glad to know it is good.

Rented Sweet November this past weekend and enjoyed that one too. Expected more comedy, which it has, but also a tear jerker.

Waking Ned Devine!!!!

Original, funny, touching - made me decide I HAD to go to Ireland...

It's strange - I seem to be drawn to sad, depressing, and/or disturbing movies. The lighthearted sweet ones generally get passed over for something gut-wrenching. What does that say about me?

I haven't seen any of the other films mentioned in this thread, but please, keep the suggestions coming! I keep a running list of movies that people have recommended and try to remember to take it with me to the video store for ideas when nothing jumps out at me.

Eva,

Here are some films I've rented recently (most while DH was out of town- moody, foreign films generally annoy him):

Lovers on the Bridge French, with Juliette Binoche. Down and out lovers, living on a bridge, leacing self-destructive, sad lives. Who knew Paris could be so bleak?

Lovers at the Arctic Circle Spanish. Step-siblings who become lovers, then fall in love, lose each other, find each other (in Finland, for heaven's sake).

Romper StomperAustralian, early Russell Crowe. Dark, violent, follows a gang of neo-Nazi youth. Very disturbing and hard to watch, but powerful and well-made.

All About My Mother Spanish, classic Almodovar- lots of laughter amidst the tears. DH and I loved this. Penelope Cruz is radiant.

Alisa, Waking Ned Devine is a classic! The little man on the motorcycle, in the nude? Such a scream.

KValley, I think you read my mind. I watched You Can Count on Me last weekend, and considered posting about it, also. It was really good. And Matthew Broderick in it reminded me of Election, which I loved. Reese Witherspoon was great in that. A movie I really enjoyed but didn't expect to was Frequency.

I re-watched part of Waking Ned Devine this evening on Bravo, but I somehow missed the naked guy on the bike. That was the best part.

A movie I read great reviews of was Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her (think thats right), but I haven't seen it yet. Has anyone else?

Now I'm in a movie kind of mood!

"All About My Mother" Spanish, classic Almodovar- lots of laughter amidst the tears.

KValley--

I think I saw this on Bravo this weekend. Is it about four sisters? Their mom is a performer. All of the sisters fall in love with the same guy?? If it's the same movie, I thought it was wonderful. I've caught parts of it on Bravo before, so they must show it frequently, but I've never seen the beginning of it.

I can't answer that question, but I wanted to add that I LOVE that show!

Julie,

Thanks for all the movie suggestions. All About My Mother is one that I wanted to see when it first came out, but that I have since forgotten about. Romper Stomper sounds right up my alley - I will definitely add that to my list!

One more that I thought of that I saw recently, but that I was surprisingly disappointed with was The Emperor and the Assassin. Don't get me wrong - it was a great epic story, but there was something missing for me. Other people I know thought it was wonderful.

I've also heard good things about Eat Drink Man Woman and Memento, although I haven't seen either (they're on my list!).

Another big thumbs up on Raise the Red Lantern. That is my absolute favorite movie of all time. (My second favorite is Paris, Texas.) I recently saw The Road Home (or something like that) which was a Chinese movie done by the same director who did Raise the Red Lantern. What a beautiful movie. The photography was stunning and the story left you leaving the theater feeling better about life. On the other hand, avoid Planet of the Apes. My parents wanted to see it, so I went along. We all agreed that the movie was a dog (and we rarely agree on such things), and I was particularly disturbed that it seemed like this version was making fun of the social messages that were in the original movie. I would definitely find a better film to see, or save yourself the $8.00.

Yes, Rachel Griffiths is the girlfriend on Six Feet Under. Is that show incredible or what!!!!

Memento was a great movie. I was blown away.

I prefer independent and/or foreign movies to the fluff that Hollywood rolls out. Here are some of my favorites:

Metroland: w/ Christian Bale and Emily Watson

Requiem for a Dream: incredibly disturbing but WHAT a performance from Ellen Burstyn!!

Next Stop Wonderland- a great little romance

Sliding Doors: Gwyneth playing a Brit, a great
what if? story

Shine: from Australia, a true story about a very talented musician

State and Main: A David Mamet play with Sarah Jessica Parker, Alec Baldwin, William Macy. About a film being shot in Vermont, very clever.

These are off the top of my head. I can think of a million more given time!

Six Feet Under is wonderful. Rachel Griffiths plays my favorite character. The only other movie I have seen her in is Hilary and Jackie , which I thought was great. I will have to track down her other movies.

Another movie I have read great reviews of but haven't seen yet is Yi Yi . It is a Taiwanese movie, so I'm hoping maybe you Chinese movie buffs have seen it. Any reviews?

I have been in a movie lull all this summer, because all of the Hollywood movies coming out are depressing me. Actually, what depresses me is how many people actually like that slop - I have talked to too many people who tell me that Tomb Raider was one of the best movies ever - very depressing. Anyway, I think I will print this thread out and take it to the video store with me this weekend! Thanks, guys!

You Can Count on Me was wonderful. Laura Linney is an amazing actress.

If you want a good laugh, definitely rent State and Main or Best in Show. Too funny. Dana, I think we have very similar taste in movies. I loved Sliding Doors and Next Stop Wonderland. We got the biggest kick out of taking the train back and forth from the Boston airport because it really does say "Wonderland" on it. (Okay, so we're a little naive and easily amused.)

Eva, have you seen Shanghai Triad? It came out about five years ago and sounds like one you would enjoy.

This one will probably be headed to video eventually, but did anyone see Dinner with Friends on HBO last weekend. I thought it was terrific, and made DH watch it on Tuesday so we could talk about it (he worked Sat night.)

Six Feet Under is a great show, and Rachel Griffiths is great in it, but I've been trying to limit my television addiction to Sex and the City, and don't watch it very often.

Hi Julie,

Nope, different movie. All About My Mother is about a woman who loses her teenage son, leaves her job in Madrid to return to Barcelona, where she had been a prostitute many years before. SHe returns to be a mother to former friends from a rough crowd. Penelope Cruz plays a pregnant nun with AIDS. Sounds nutty, but it's really lovely!

Don, I'm sorry to say that DH and I went to see Planet of the Apes It was really hot, we don't have A/C- our other choices were American Pie II and Rush Hour II (I live in a small town, no multiplex). It was pretty awful. At least we paid matinee prices!

Dana- more big votes from me for Next Stop Wonderland, Sliding Doors, State and Main Now we're back to my favorite- quirky, sweet, odd little movies.

If you like David Mamet (and his wife, REbecca Pidgeon, who always appears in his films, and who is a fantastic Celtic (Scottish) singer)- run to get The Spanish Prisoner It's a little bizarre- a thriller, twisted plot. GREAT fun!

Eva-Eat Drink Man Woman is great! Also try The Wedding Banquet I believe this is Ang Lee. I'm also anxious to see Memento

And, we can't neglect to mention Priscilla, Queen of the Desert!!!

Okay, now I am inspired to have a mini-Ang Lee film festival some coming weekend: Eat Drink Man Woman, The Wedding Banquet, Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon All incredible movies!!

Julie, The Spanish Prisoner has been on my list of movies to check out, and now I definitely will because I really liked Rebecca Pidgeon. I didn't know she was married to David Mamet, and I had never heard of her. Thanks!!

If you all get the Oxygen Channel, they show movies every night at 9 pm and they are ususally the good girly ones (not like the Lifetime movies but better!)

This is a great thread!
Let me add words of praise for the films of Japanese director Juzo Itami.

Unfortunately, he died some years ago, so there won't be any more, and not all his films are available on video in the U.S., but a good many are, and they are great fun. The humor can be a bit bizarre, and some of the mobster-related storylines a bit more violent than I have any interest in, but overall, I really like his films.

Two of my favorites:
Tampopo is one about a woman who opens a noodle shop and struggles to learn the secret of a good broth, among other things.

Minbo: or, The Gentle Art Of Japanese Extortion is about a Japanese hotel with a gangster problem and the steps they take to get the problem solved.

Parental advisory: I don't think his films would necessarily be appropriate for an audience of children. There's always a good bit of sex in his films. The kids would miss the more subtle jokes, anyhow. :)

I'm so excited about this thread! I can't believe the topic of movies hasn't been discussed before...

Julie- I, too, recently saw and LOVED You Can Count on Me. What great acting!

Many of my favorites have been mentioned on this thread: Waking Ned Devine, The Red Violin, Best in Show, and Memento.

aggie94- i also tend to gravitate towards the gut-wrenching and disturbing. Did you see The Pledge? I saw it recently and it really keeps you guessing.

Here' my favorite movie review website. It's a conglomeration of many different reviews, so I find that I agree with the consesus more often than not. :)

SusieO - I have seen Shanghai Triad, and it's another really good one. As is Farewell My Concubine. A couple that I have yet to see but are on my list are Temptress Moon and Ju Dou. I watched Dinner with Friends on HBO the other night and was disappointed. IMO, it was two hours of listening to married/separating couples bicker. If I wanted that, I'd just pick a fight with my husband! ;)

kabs - I haven't seen or heard of The Pledge, but I will put it on my list to check out. Thanks for the rec!

beacooker - I haven't seen Yi-Yi, but it sounds good. It's also on my list.

Julie - I'm embarrassed to admit that I have yet to see any film of Ang Lee's. I know, I know. They're on my list.

I love, love, loved The Wedding Banquet. I didn't realize that was an Ang Lee movie.

Yi Yi has been on my list since I saw a review of it on CBS Sunday Morning several months ago. I'll have to look for it on video.

Is The Spanish Prisoner done in Spanish with English subtitles. If so, I remember hearing about it a good while back. It sounded interesting.

Hi Susie- Spanish Prisoner is all in English- Steve Martin, Rebecca Pidgeon, Campbell Scott star. The 'Spanish Prisoner' is the name of an elaborate confidence game. Think North by Northwest or The Usual Suspects. It's so good!

So, I've got to add Yi Yi to the list.

Eva- I thought of another for you Dreamlife of Angels It's French, won the French equivalent to the Oscar a couple of years ago. Two young women, drifting aimlessly in high-unemployment France, become friends, one tears herself apart loving the wrong guy. Very modern, brilliant acting, real, poignant.

These are also on my list- I'm wondering if anyone has good/bad feedback (some have been on my list for so long I can't remember why or what they are about !)

My Life So Far
Firelight
Rowing with the Wind
Talk of Angels
8th Day
Woman Wanted
Get Real
Sebastian Cole
Felicia's Journey
Rosetta
Agnes Brown

Oh Life is Beautiful -which IS beautiful- made me think of another Italian film I love: Il Postino SOOO romantic!

Saw three very good French films in the last few weeks, very different but all well worth seeing.

Widow of Saint Pierre stars Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil; it's a period piece about a convicted murderer who can't be executed because there's no guillotine or executioner on this French island (maybe in Canada? sorry--zoned out at the beginning of the film where it says where it's set!). Binoche and Auteuil are a married couple; he's an army officer and his job is to guard the prisoner until the guillotine and executioner can be sent from another island. The movie is about the friendship that develops between Binoche and the prisoner.

The Taste of Others --a funny and poignant look at a group of middle-aged couples falling in and out of love. I really liked this movie--it's so rare to see middle-aged male actors playing against middle-aged female actors as their love interests. Very refreshing.

With a Friend Like Harry This movie reminded me a little bit of The Vanishing--the original version in Dutch and French. It's about a French couple and their three children who are going to their summer vacation home. The husband meets up with an old schoolmate on their way to the house. The schoolmate spends the rest of the movie ingratiating himself with the family at first in various weird ways but his involvement becomes increasingly disturbing and sick as the movie progresses. It's a violent movie, but there's also a lot of humor in it. And the acting is so good!

Must put in a plug for Best in Show which nearly had me falling out of my seat in the theater.

I want to rent movies now! More recommendations please!

Life is Beautiful is a wonderful movie. Has anyone seen The Monster? It's an older movie also featuring Roberto B (not going to attempt the spelling) and his wife, and it is hysterically funny.

Also, if you've never seen it, Cold Comfort Farm is a sweet, quirky, semi-romantic movie that is also hysterically funny.

I have got to check out The Spanish Prisoner. I love unusual plot twists.

Elisabeth, I'm intending to purchase Best in Show so I can watch it over and over. I know I missed half of the jokes in the theater because I was laughing so hard. I caught Waiting for Guffman on tv last weekend. I think Christopher Guest is a comic genius. (But I really wanted his dog to win!)

Several years ago, my family was going through a crisis where alchol was destroying a family member. My sister Lynn suggested i rent When a Man loves a Woman with Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan i think. That movie made me cry ! I am not not i repeat not one to cry at movies. THis movie hit home so hard to me. Another movie was Frequency I saw that shortly after my father died, my God i did not think I would stop crying. And like most adults in their late 20's when my mom took me to see Star Wars for the first time. Hey what can you do !
Final suggestion City Of Angels with Meg Ryan and Nickolas Cage. that was really cool and touching

This thread inspired me to take another look at my video collection, and think about the things I love most about my favorite movies.
Along the way, I ran across a favorite: Love among the Ruins with Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier. It's hugely romantic and witty. The dialogue is great, the music is wonderful, and I've always wanted a dress like the fabulous French creation she wears in the final scenes of the film. (Think big Edwardian hat, lots of lace in just the right places, vivid red/orange and white, flowy fabric and a boa. Not my usual style, it's true. LOL!) It's originally a tv movie, made by ABC, but it is available on video.

I can't resist adding a mention of Run Lola Run. I think it might be German, at any rate it's got subtitles in English. I keep thinking I ought to buy a copy for my movie collection!

Julie - I'm so glad you mentioned The Usual Suspects. I love that movie, and I have to put in my plug for Kevin Spacey. He is one of my favorite actors.

And on the topic of favorite actors, Edward Norton is another one. If you haven't seen American History X, I would highly recommend it. It's a very powerful film.

I just wanted to thank all of you for making me feel less weird. A lot of my friends think that I'm crazy because I am such a fan of Chinese movies. I have seen just about all of the ones mentioned, except for Yi Yi, because it was 3 hours long and the local theater only showed it for a couple of weeks. I was out of town. :( Whether they are drama films or comedies, I have yet to see a bad Chinese movie. At least I now know that I am not the only Chinese movie fan around!

By the way, another incredibly beautiful film was Central Station (I think that was the title) about an older Brazilian woman who travels to the rainforest with a small child to help the child find his father. The lead actress, whose name I forget, was nominated for an Oscar. It was a truly exceptional film. And, one last film, if you haven't seen it, take the opportunity to see Shall We Dance? It's a Japanese film about a man obsessed with ballroom dancing, which is considered very strange in Japanese society. It was both hilarious and touching.

A few movies that I have really enjoyed, and one of the best is 'A Murder of Crows' starring Cuba Gooding Jr. - excellent mystery, 'The Family Man' with Nicolas Cage, 'Best in Show' is hysterical, can't wait - this week comes Hannibal, saw it in the theatre, it got poor ratings as did 'The Pledge' which should have (why would Jack Nicholson put himself is such a dud!), anyway Hannibal is really good! Another really old one, if you can get your hands on is 'The Bad Seed' - that is a very creepy movie! Yes, 'When a Man Loves a Woman' was really good, I could just take Andy Garcia away with me ;)

This is a great thread and thanks for some of the recommendations - I watch too many movies, love to hear recommendations as I sure have rented my quota of duds!

I liked Little Voice, but thought it was a little depressing. I can't remember what it was nominated for. I thought Michael
Caine was nominated for Cider House Rules, but maybe that was a different year.

Shall We Dance is on my list of favorites. Such a sweet, funny, romantic movie. And I loved the ending.

I watched Eat Drink Man Woman last night, and really enjoyed it. Never thought I'd see a movie with better food scenes than Big Night. Tonight's selection is The Spanish Prisoner. Started watching last night, but got sleepy. What I saw was really good. I love David Mamet's way with dialogue.

KValley --

Thanks for the reminder to rent You Can Count on Me! It was a truly lovely film with wonderfully complex characters (finally!).

If I may put in a plug in for some fun oldies, try Charade with Audrey Hepburn (its a romantic comedic suspense piece) and Foreign Correspondent, one of Hitchcock's lesser known pieces which has a silly streak to it (even if the ending is a little contrived).

We rented movies Friday night, but so far, haven't gotten around to watching all of them yet. We rented The Virgin Suicides, which I was not terribly impressed with. Slow-moving, and I thought they did a poor job of developing the characters. We also rented Madadayo, Akira Kurosawa's last film, and Stranger than Paradise, Jim Jarmusch's first film. Oh, and a friend loaned us their copy of Eat Drink Man Woman. I'm hoping to actually watch all these before we have to return them.

I had plans to watch one, if not two, movies on Friday night with DH. But he fell asleep on the couch for four hours and I ended up eating dinner alone in front of the TV, watching The Weakest Link and Millionaire.

I also give a hearty recommendation for Waking Ned Devine! I've seen it twice and told everybody I know about it. A really enjoyable movie.

Another good one is The Dish -- about a communications facility in Australia that played a key role in the TV broadcast of Apollo 11. My description makes it sound boring but it was good (then again, I *am* a geek :) )

Anther one that I just saw recently that I absolutely love -- Pride and Prejudice -- the 1995 version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. Five hours of awesome!

I LOVE this movie - my sister and I rent it now & then and spend a whole day clutching boxes of Kleenex and mooning over Colin Firth - Lord he's yummy! My DH isn't a BB member, is he???:)

In case you haven't seen it, A&E also did "Sense & Sensibility" and it's ALMOST as good.

Hi. I've seen many of these recommended movies and just wanted to put in another plug for You Can Count on Me and Next Stop Wonderland.

One I did not see on the list was The Closet, a French film about a man who works as an accountant for a condom factory. He is about to be fired and so he pretends to be gay to avoid losing his job. This subject could have been handled in a very tasteless way, but it was sensitive and funny at the same time and I cannot remember the last time I laughed that hard in a theater. This one was at our arts theater this summer so it might not be on video yet.

Another terrific one, esp. for fans of romantic or Asian films, is In the Mood for Love. I believe this is a Hong Kong film--it is about a man and a woman who rent rooms in the same house and they come to realize that his wife and her husband are having an affair. They start to fall in love but refuse to succumb to adultery the way their spouses did. Every scene is shot with beautiful precision. Much of the acting is done with facial expressions and body language as opposed to the spoken word, and the effect is ethereal and lovely. This was the best movie I saw last year and I highly recommend it.

Madadayo and Stranger than Paradise were both due back at the video store today, and knowing we could only watch one last night, I picked. My choice was completely selfish -- I looked to see how long they were, and chose Stranger than Paradise because it was only 90 minutes long and I knew I could get to bed a little early. :)

If anyone else has seen this movie and "gets it," maybe you could enlighten me. This was the biggest waste of 90 minutes that I have spent in a long time. I think clearly this is one of those movies that is appreciated for something other than its plot (what, I'm not sure -- camera angles? light/dark contrast? mise en scene?? who knows). I just didn't get it. The movie was pieced together with scenes that just didn't make sense to me, like 2 minutes of watching the main characters sitting in a theater watching a movie, or 3 minutes of watching the main characters driving on the freeway, where the only dialogue was "Do you think we're in Ohio yet?" "No, I think we're still in Pennsylvania." EH??? We watched the whole thing, thinking "Something's gonna happen any minute now," but nothing ever did.

DH got up this morning and watched Madadayo while I was getting ready for work, but I'll have to add it back to my list for another time.

Hey Jewel- are those the before reduction or after hooters. That would be the deciding factor whether I rent them or not!!
PS. Pamela lived behind us when we lived in Comox,B.C. I remember her parents but not her! Guess she didn't have her "golden Globes" yet!
By rent them I mean the videos!!:D
