Starting off the new week to wish Robyn luck with the Bolder Boulder! I know you are psyched & ready to go. Hopefully you'll have awesome weather, too.

ktg - so sorry to hear about your cat! It does take a long time to adjust, but just enjoy all the great memories you have. Thx for checking in with us....it's been a while

Les - did I read too quickly, or are you on break between semesters?? Woo hoo!

Well, I've forgotten everything else from the previous thread, so will just say hello to the rest o' the gang.

Went on a great trail run w/the Bode-monster yesterday. 45 min, hills, dirt & no official training schedule. What's not to love?

Sun is the Madison Marathon (& Half) and I'm working one of the aid stations. I ended up with a late shift, which means there will be fewer runners. But, I figure they'll need & appreciate it more!

Thanks Susan! I'm sooooo excited I can barely stand it! Being one of the slower runners I'm going to say thank you to you for being out there late and when it's hotter! Have fun cheering on the runners.

Ktg So sorry about your cat. :(

Thanks for starting Susan.

Robyn - I hope you have a great day in the race and that the conditions are nice (cool and overcast would be best in my book). I bet you're stoked for the race too.

Susan - Yep, I'm off for the summer. Two years down and one to go. Of course off for the summer is a relative term, I'll be working at a small church in southern Virginia (Blackstone) for the better part of two months but it will be a lot less hectic than last summer in the hospital. I hope that you have a great day on Sunday working at an aid station - even late would be a blast. And you're right, the people out at the end love the smiling faces on the course more than the earlier ones most of the time.

I've been taking full advantage of the end of classes this week too. I actually ran today (and my legs were very unhappy thank you). It wasn't the best run I've ever had but considering that I rode ~19 miles yesterday afternoon (fairly late) on my mountain bike and climbed a few good-sized hills I can only imagine why they were so nasty. That and it was pushing 80 with 75% humidity and bright sun. Still nice to be able to claim a run on the VRB thread. Something that has been fairly scarce these past few months.

Need to go and hit the hay. I hope to hear from a bunch of folks and to hear a good race report Robyn.

Happy trails,
Les

Robyn - Good luck with your race! I am sure you will rock it.

Les - Congrats on finishing up your second year! I hope you get a chance to do all of the things you have been missing while studying. Great job on getting a run in!

ktg - I haven't read what has happened to your cat, but it doesn't sound good. I am so sorry. I lost my little guy last year and I remember how hard it was. It felt so empty at home without him. Take care.

SusanMac - Have fun helping out at the race!

I had a fabulous long weekend; lots of rest and relaxation, which is exactly what I needed. On Tuesday and Thursday, I went for a run. I was going to run again tonight, but ended up going for a long walk instead. On Thursday, I forgot the transmitter for my ipod gadget (was very bummed), so all I know is that I ran for 54 minutes and my distance was about 9 km.

Here are the details for my run on Tuesday:

Distance: 5.92 km (3.67 miles)
Time: 35:33
Pace: 6:00 min/km (9:39 min/mile)
Calories: 377

The weather is supposed to be amazing this weekend and I'm looking forward to spending some time at the beach. Will probably try to get in a run on Sunday afternoon. Have a great weekend everyone!

Lurker here, although one of these days I'm going to join...I've been running consistently for almost 2 months now! But really I came here to say GO ROBYN!!!

Good luck, Robyn! Hope you have a blast!!!

ktg, so sorry to hear about your cat. :( It is especially hard to lose them when they have been part of your family for so long. Take care!

Susan, hope you have a good afternoon working the aid station. I am sure the runners will be glad to see a friendly face and hear some encouragement late in the day. Oh, and they will probably be grateful for the "aid", too!

Nice job on the run and rides, Les! Sounds like you have a nice summer in store for you. Will you commute to the church every day? How far away is it?

katygirl, no need to be lurking. Two months of running would DEFINITELY qualify you as a VRB! Welcome! :)

A very hectic (although quite memorable and fun!) week behind me as DS graduated from HS. We had several end of the year events including graduation ceremony, and 3 OOT houseguests for the festivities. Thank goodness he had his recital/party earlier this month! Next week promises to be full as well while I get the kids going on their summer stuff. DS is off to Washington DC for an 8 week internship (I will go out with him for 2 days to get him settled in and help him get his bearings), and DD is starting summer school. MIL will be staying with us for the next few months as well.

Although I have not had the time/energy to post, I have actually been getting in runs pretty regularly (probably helps save my sanity!), and hopefully after next week I will get back into a regular weight lifting routine. It has been sporadic at best.

Hi to Vicci, Carrie, Natasha, Julie, Tkay and all others that may follow. Wishing you all a great weekend!

GO ROBYN! I hope the race went well. I can't wait to hear the report :)

Kathy - Congrats to DS! I find it very impressive he has an internship in DC before even heading off to college!

Katygirl - Hope to see you around more! Congrats on the 2 months of running.. Starting is the hardest part.

OJ - Don't you love the Nike+! It really helped motivate me at times. Unfortunately, my iPod Nano died and I got a shuffle to replace it which doesn't have Nike+ capability.

ktg - Sorry to hear about your kitty.

Les - I am glad to hear you were able to get out for a run! It has been a while since you've reported one :)

I finally got a chance to go running outside on Thursday during a break in the rain. This morning was a nice 45 min run outside.. I'm glad I didn't procrastinate because it is looking like a thunderstorm right now. Dark, windy & thunder. Just waiting for the rain to start.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Thanks for all the kind words about our kitty. I appreciate it...it's been a hard week.

Kathy -- congrats on your DS's graduation! What is he doing during his 8 week internship? It will be fun for him to be in DC.

Robyn -- Good luck with the Boulder Bolder!

Carrie -- glad you could squeeze a run in between raindrops.

Susan -- have fun with the marathon aid station. I'm sure the later runners will appreciate your help and cheering.

Les -- I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences in the church where you'll be this summer.

Ocean -- have fun at the beach.

Today is a lazy day but tomorrow I am going out for a run. I think I just needed a little break but must get back in my routine. I need to spend some time moving plants around in the garden tomorrow or Monday but otherwise, we don't have much planned for the long weekend.

Happy long weekend VRBers! Ahhh! Very relaxing day.

DH & I (& Bode) have run 3 days in a row now, which feels great. I think the dog park/hill trail running will really help to strengthen my feet & ankles.

Kathy - that is so awesome about DS's graduation. That must feel really rewarding as a parent. The summer internship sounds fun!

Nice job on the run and rides, Les! Sounds like you have a nice summer in store for you. Will you commute to the church every day? How far away is it?
Blackstone is about 3 hours without traffic from Alexandria. And not having traffic would be nearly impossible since that route goes through the I-95 corridor (past Quantico Marine Base, Woodbridge, Fredericksburg) and through Richmond. I'll probably spend most of my weeks down there and maybe a couple days every other week up here. But I'm not sure what will ultimately be the plan. There's a furnished house in town that I'll be staying at (I don't ask these things - something set up by the priest I'll be working with so... it must be fine).

When will you be out here? Drop me a PM and maybe we can hook up in one of the two days you are here. It's always neat to meet VRB IRL.

Thanks Carrie, you aren't kidding. :( my legs are telling me that I'm out of running practice. Plenty of lungs but hooves aren't any kind of happy today.
Katygirl - Welcome to the fold. Two months of running "qualifies" you as a VRB. Come back again soon.
A shout out to ktg and oceanjasper. Good runs to those who got out for a run.

Today was a rest day. Legs were completely unhappy with me so I decided that I needed to keep a little cap on my running for a while, at least until the legs get used to running again.

Hope the remainder of the gang are well and I'll see you later.
Happy trails,
Les

Les probably good to take a rest day. Sometimes I find that if I'm mentally exhausted I just can't do the physical workout I want to.

Kathy Happy graduation to DS!!!

Susan Nice job on the runs!

Carrie I keep hearing about all the rain down there, hope you stay dry!

OJ I hate it when I forget my gizmos!

Katy you are so sweet to stop in to cheer me on! Please do join us! This group is part of the reason I feel so successful in my endeavors!

The last couple of days have been a bit crazy. Thursday I went up to Summit County to babysit for a friend's kids (one of whom I coached this season). I arrived without much info and found that I was truly going to play soccer mom by cooking dinner quickly, loading the kids up (12 year old girl and 5 year old boy) in the car with booster seat for the youngest, running to Target to replace lost shin guards and cleats and off to the high school for soccer try outs. It was raining so all they did was sign in then we were let go so we stopped by the new bike/ski shop their dad opened the next day to say hi. Then home, bath time for the little one and off to bed. I'm so not used to that kind of schedule! Friday I woke up, got some time to spend with their stepmom and fellow coach/friend and then we headed off to the store where I spent the next 6 or so hours steaming clothes to get ready for the opening which was that day. By the time I got home Friday night I knew a run wasn't happening.

I got in an easy 1200 yd swim today. Tomorrow is a planned rest day although there will be plenty of walking as my coach and I are heading to Boulder and stopping at a local circuit bike race and doing some shopping. We're staying with my aunt and uncle that night and they'll serve as our shuttles to race start and meeting us at the finish to watch the Memorial Day festivities.

In case I forget on Monday, I want to give my thanks to Les for his service to our country and ask for prayers for my oldest friend. He ships out on June 2nd for a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He's been to Iraq once already and I'm scared to death about this tour.

KathyB - Congrats to DS on his HS graduation. Looks like your family has a lot of fun and interesting things going on this summer. Good job on getting those runs in especially when things have been so hectic!

Robyn1007 - After playing soccer mom for awhile, I bet it was nice to get back to a slower pace. :) I just figured out that it is Memorial Day tomorrow. We had our long weekend last weekend (Victoria Day), so unfortunately, I get to go to work tomorrow. Have a great race!

I ran today, but it was a bit of a bust. I could list a few reasons, but I would have to say that the cougar encounter tops the list. I didn't see it, but my running partner did. Massive surges of adrenalin running through my body totally messed with my run (and my brain). I struggled through, walked a bit, and looked over my shoulder many a time. Here are the stats recorded on my gizmo:

Distance: 7.38 km (4.58 miles)
Time: 45:15
Pace: 6:07 min/km (9:51 min/mile)
Calories: 470

For those of you who have the day off tomorrow, enjoy!

oj, a cougar? That would certainly blow my focus! Looks like you got a good run in just the same, though. Good job!

Hope things are going well, Robyn! I am looking forward to your report. Nice to have your own personal shuttle service...especially when they can double as a cheering section! :D

Les, just give your legs a little time. I am sure they will get back into the swing of things. I will send you a PM.

Susan, how was the aid station? Did you have a lot of runners stopping by?

Hope you got your run in Kathy. A long weekend with no plans sounds lovely!

Good job on your run before the rain, Carrie! You must have sent the rain this way, because we are supposed to have rain the next 4 days. Thanks a lot!! ;)

About the DC internship for DS....we have a friend who knew DS was interested in an internship, and he helped him get his foot in the door. From our understanding, he will be doing things like giving tours of the Capitol to constituents, helping sort mail, running errands and possibly even helping with research for legislation. I am sure it will be a great experience for him.

Rain moving in here today, too, so I decided I better get in a longer run while I could. Did a little over 4.5 miles, then took the dogs for a walk about another mile. Today is laundry, general clean up and recovery from the past week! :p

Here's to a good week for all!

Robyn - Great job being soccer mom the other day and having a good race in the Boulder Bolder. It is maddening that I'm not able to run like I used to and it can be a little unnerving. But it will all come back in time, I just need to reaclimate my body to running in 85+ temps/heat index.
OJ - I'm with Kathy when I hear cougar. a bit much for my blood. I can only imagine having your adrenalin pulsing through your body after that. Still good for you to finish your run even with the weird rush.
Kathy B - What I would have given for a little rain here - that would have broken the oppressive humidity. I hope your recovery from last week goes well.

Thank you Robyn, it was my honor to serve and my prayers are lifted for your friend and all others who are in harm's way. Life is better now, classes out, sleeping in as much as possible, and running and riding regularly. Even doing some cooking. :D I ran today and the heat/humidity was nasty. I definitely have lost my tolerance for the humidity, not a good thing considering I'm supposed to be running in a half-marathon in Sepatember in Virginia Beach (it will be hot and humid even starting at 6:45). I rode yesterday for about 14 miles and took some new routes. I can't wait to get my road bike so I'm not standing in 1st to go up the hills (like on my mountain bike). The hour's run today was fun but I've definitely got to get more of them in and soon.

Off to the dentist tomorrow morning so I'll probably ride again since it's supposed to be warm by midday.

Happy trails all and happy Memorial Day,
Les

Alright, I'm going to be lazy and copy my race report from my blog. I got in a short nap but my legs were so achy that I couldn't sleep much. I'm sitting here wishing I had someone to make me dinner but instead I need to figure something out myself.

When I awoke this morning I was beyond excited to get to racing my first 10k in many years! The skies were partly cloudy and it looked like the rain might hold off until after the race. After a breakfast of eggs, toast and a cup of coffee we headed off to the start with my aunt and uncle serving as a most excellent shuttle to the start for my coach and I. Her wave went off nearly an hour before mine so I had a lot of time to take in the surroundings.

This race has 54,000 runners so people are line up as far as the eyes can see. The Bolder has gone off for 31 years so the organizers have an incredibly well run set up allowing each racer to feel special. There are 84 waves in total. The first waves are qualified waves so the people in those waves have to submit times from other races proving they can race at a certain pace. Following that are waves of people who self-seed based on their expected times. I seeded myself in a 70-90 minute wave and registered early enough that I was in the first of those waves. As you line up you get behind a sign with your wave letters and as each wave goes off you move closer. All of the sudden you feel like you must have a wave or two in front of you but the volunteers are saying "Go time!" and you're moving to the start. A trumpeter plays his tune and then the gun!

Making sure to keep your pace in check the first mile is tough as noted by my 11 minute mile (goal was just over 12 minute miles)is the biggest challenge in this mile. I settled in for mile 2 including Folsom Field. Unfortunately, for some reason mile 3 hurt today. It was odd because it was virtually flat but I just couldn't find a rhythm and I had to walk more than I'd have liked. Mile 4 appears slow on the official split because I had to run into the port-o-potty unfortunately but it actually felt much better than mile 3. Once I topped the hill just after the mile 4 marker I felt like I hit a comfortable stride. Wish it had happened earlier but at least I found it. In the final mile the crowd cheering loudly. Starting up the last hill I just told myself I couldn't walk any more. As I rounded the corner toward the stadium the emotions took hold and I had an asthma attack. But I just didn't want to be the one who walked the last 3/10 of a mile. As I went under the 6 mile banner and peeked at my watch I saw that I'd taken 2 minutes off my 6 mile time from last week. Woohoo!!! I wouldn't hit my 75 minute goal but I'm improving and that's what really matters right now.

As I came around the turn into the stadium, down the little hill and hit the metal planking that protects the ground of the stadium the roar of the crowd in enormous! People line the railings cheering you on and you feel like you just ran into the stadium of the Olympics. Around the stadium about 3/4 of the way and there's the finish! Hitting the stop on the watch and I see 1:17:13. And I look around and can't believe that I've done it. If you'd like to see me cross the finish line check out this video (http://www.thedenverchannel.com/video/19560944/index.html). I appear at 4:01 in the video in the center of the screen.

After picking up my snack bag I headed for our designated meeting spot and found my coach and was joined shortly after that by my aunt and uncle. We waited to watch the pro race and the Memorial Day ceremonies. The male pro ran his race in, get this, 29:19!!! That's about a 4:43 second mile pace!

The Memorial Day tribute took on special meaning for me today as I prepare to send my oldest friend off to battle next week. God speed Brett Cheatham, you better come home safely! For the tribute sky jumpers come in with flags representing each of the branches of service and then finally the US flag. It's incredibly moving as Lee Greenwood's "I'm Proud to be an American" plays in the background.

Next year, I'd like to qualify for the restricted waves. I'd also like to get the side stitches issue under control as much of the walking that I had to do was because of these. Hopefully more fitness will bring relief from these.

As the last notes of the Memorial Day Tribute finished the skies opened up and released a deluge of rain. We were parked a mile or so away so needless to say we were soaked by the time we reached the car but we couldn't believe the luck of the weather holding off until after the races and ceremonies!

Here are some photos from the day!

Great job Robyn!!! That is an awesome time. The crowd at the end sounds like so much fun.. I might have to run Bolder Boulder soon :)

Les - Tell me about it! The humidity & heat are crazy down here now that the rain finally stopped. I usually don't complain about rain because it keeps it nice and cool.. or at least cools things off in the afternoon. But the 6 solid days of rain was too much.

Kathy - Sorry for sending the rain your way! That is so cool about DS's internship. It sounds like he'll have a blast.

OJ - Cougar? Really? That is the craziest thing I've heard!! I can't believe you finished the run. Though maybe cougar's are like alligators down here? I almost ran over one of those one time...

I got in two bike rides today. A nice morning ride and then a hot afternoon ride with a friend. We're going to try for the local rails-to-trails bike path next weekend.

Congrats on the race, Robyn! What an incredible achievement!

Les - Looks like you are well on your way to whipping those legs back into running shape. Too bad about the humidity. I can only imagine what that must be like.

Robyn - Loved your description of running into the stadium with the huge crowd cheering you on. How amazing that must have been! I hear ya on the side stitches. I have also been getting them lately and they are really distracting.

newsomz - We have lots of cougars around here, but you rarely ever see them. You might wonder why anyone would want to run in the woods where there could be bears, wolves, or cougars, but they mostly don't want anything to do with people. Now, if you told me to run somewhere I might find crocodiles, I would probably opt out! :)

Robyn - Congrats!! What a great race. Loved the pictures (& esp the skirt). We'll keep your Army friend in our thoughts. Sounds like a really fun weekend. Gosh, I couldn't do the soccer mom thing. I got exhausted just reading about it!

Great bike ride yesterday. 22 miles. The winds were 17 mph, but it was a holiday & I was determined to get out.

The marathon was great. Fantastic weather for the runners. I arrived a bit early to enjoy a coffee & cheer before my official volunteer time. I watched everyone from the 3:20 - 5:30 runners. Not as many walkers as I expected. Very fun to see the all the smiles as people came through our station. We had a pretty fun & enthusiastic aid station, which is nice. I finished my time by picking up a million little Gu tabs on the street. Later I realized that was the equivalent of doing 20 minutes of squats! Oi, my hamstrings & bum still feel it.

Today's probably a rest day, with a bit of core work. Hope everyone had a good holiday

Robyn - Yahoo! Great race report. I also loved the description of coming into the stadium to cheering crowds. I'm sure that gave you such a high. Congrats on a job well done. (Well wishes to your serviceman friend too.)

OJ - Cougar? No thanks.

Les - Enjoy your sort-of-break. :D

Katygirl and tholbrook - Welcome.

Fell off the wagon over the weekend. That is to say, didn't do a darn thing from a workout standpoint. Back on the treadmill this morning. I've got a dress to fit into for my niece's wedding on Saturday. ;)

oceanjasper

SusanMac - Nothing like a workout you don't even know you are getting until later! Sounds like a fun marathon.

TKay - Good luck with the dress! :)

I went for a run tonight. No serious wildlife this time; just a bunny and a bug in the eye. ;) I did the same run that I did last week when I forgot my ipod and I was way off on my estimate of time and distance. However, I know that I picked up the pace tonight, because I broke a 6 minute/km for the first time!

Here is the scoop:

Distance: 7.20 km (4.47 miles)
Time: 42:00
Pace: 5:49 min/km (9:23 min/mile)
Calories: 459

Leslie Ferguson
05-27-2009, 07:38 PM
Great ride Susan, 22 miles in 17 mph winds is no mean feat. It sounds like you had a blast at the race even if you got the unexpected workout squatting. ;) I hope you aren't too worse the wear.
Robyn - I liked the video and the race report. I can't imagine running in a race that has 54,000 runners in it. 25,000 at Boston and 21,000 in the Rock and Roll Virginia Beach is plenty for me. How are your legs today?
TKay - I hope that you don't have too much trouble getting into your dress this weekend. You'll be fine.
OJ - Steady as a runner these days. Good to see the bunny and too bad about the bug (rhetorical question - why does the bug always hit you in the eye or the mouth?). But I guess a bug is better than a cougar any day.
Carrie - I hope your rails-to-trails ride goes well. We have a great one of those here, the W&OD (Washington and Old Dominion) line that runs from Arlington to Purcelville (~45 miles one way I think).

I've laid a little low the past couple days. I ran on Monday like I mentioned and was totally taken out of the workout picture yesterday after I had a tooth extracted (I wasn't expecting that). Funny how that takes all your energy away. ;) But I felt better today so after getting a call from my LBS releasing the road bike I went for a jaunty spin on that thing - oh my how it works with a head-to-toe tune up. Shifting is odd so I'll have to keep fiddling with it.

That's about it, catching up on sleep and nursing a hole in my lower jaw. Happy trails to all and I'll see you on the flip side,
Les

Thanks for all the congrats guys. I really am so happy I did the race and can't wait to see how much I improve next year.

I got in a nice 2 hour bike ride this morning which felt okay. My legs were a bit tired and wiped from Monday's race but overall it was decent. Then this afternoon got in about an hour walk unexpectedly.

I'm pretty emotionally wiped out right now so I'm going to skip individuals tonight. I just got home from saying goodbye to my friend who is headed to Afghanistan. Made even more difficult after learning that he is going to be a daddy in January. My heart aches with fear for him and for the thought of his baby growing up without him. I support our troops will all that I am but I really, really, really hate war. :(:(:(

SusanMac
05-28-2009, 08:18 AM
No workouts for me Tues or Wed, but I'm checking in anyway. After 2 days off I am itchin to move. Tonight I'll run 5 miles w/my running group.

OJ - crazy about the cougar sighting! We used to run in a place where those were common, but lucked out & never ran across one. Remind me what race you're training for. I remember it's a pretty big goal, but don't remember what or when
Newsomz - random trivia....the rails-to-trails program began in Wisconsin! We've got lots of them around here both in town, and out in the boonies.
Les - take care of that hole in the mouth!
TKay - have fun at the wedding. I remember some postings early on about this one!

I just learned that there's a new half-marathon here in late Aug, so I think I'll sign up for that one as a goal, and bypass finding another marathon this year.

Anyone heard from Natasha or KValley lately?? I finally tried her honey baked lentils this week. They were yummy, but better as leftovers the 2nd day. DH isn't a huge lentil fan, but is nice & eats them whenever I make them. We have an unwritten deal where I don't make them each week :-)

TKay

Susan - Oh, it's the same wedding all right. So many interesting family tidbits floating around. I think the half sounds like a good idea. Enjoy your run tonight.
Robyn - I can only imagine the emotions you've got going on right now. I feel the same way about our troops and about war.
Les - Ouch! Sorry about your mouth. I had that happen last year. I feel for you.
OJ - Nice going on the run, bunny sighting and all.

Ended up taking yesterday off. Like Les, I had an unexpected dental issue. One of my gums tore. Not painful or anything, but so strange. I'll see the periodontist in a few weeks. Slowly and painfully dragging myself onto the TM today. I have such a lack of steam this past week. Must...put....one foot...in front....of.......the other.....

Have a good one, all.

A shout out to the gang... Robyn I'm still there with you. I understand your exhaustion too.
Susan - I bet you're itching to run after 2 days off. I hope you had a good 5 miler with friends. I've heard from Nat in an e-mail in response to a sermon I preached a few weeks ago and "seen" KValley on FB in the last couple days. I hope your new race is a fun one.
TKay - Your dental issue sounds odd to me. I think that would be a little unnerving really. I hope you got out without issue and that you had a good run/workout.

I'm being a good boy still. I rode my bike today, I think running just 2 days out from having a tooth yanked is a bad plan. Of course it started raining when I was out which made me a little nervous. I'm out on my skinny tire bike on damp/wet streets - not the optimal thing. So I was a little tentative but better safe than sorry.

Otherwise on the mend... I pray everyone else is well. I'll see you in the funnies.

Happy trails,
Les

OJ- Remind me what race you're training for. I remember it's a pretty big goal, but don't remember what or when

I am doing the Edge to Edge Marathon Relay. HERE (http://www.edgetoedgemarathon.com/) is a link to the website, if you want to take a look at it. It is a very unique run along the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island. About a km of the race is actually run on hard-packed sand. My leg is 9.2 km and is fairly hilly, but I get the glory of the finish line. :)
