The one in the house we bought is old, the surface is peeling and their are cracks around the drain, Tubs are sooo cheep (100.00) but the price quoted to install was 1100.00. Has anyone ever done this and can it be done by people with NO plumbing experience?

Eleven Hundred Dollars!?! Oh My!
I have done some minor plumbing/repairs but never put in a whole tub (did a toilet, once). However, I don't think it will be as bad as you fear. The main things are tight (re)connections/seals, so H2O doesn't leak everywhere & making sure the tub is well supported and level. I've seen several home improvement videos re: DYI bathroom redo that you could probably rent somewhere. I found mine at our library & one did include tub replacement. I think it was the Hometime series. Also check out thefamilyhandyman.com, they have alot of how-to stuff in their archives & forum board for questions like this. Good Luck!

I've never installed a bathtub but DH says the only difficult part is removing the old one and figuring out how to dispose of it. As long as the proper support is there, the plumbing is not supposed to be difficult...the $1100 sounds like an awful lot - we paid a contactor to install one for us this past summer (DH was away) and he did it for $130 CDN!

Another option might be to have your currtent tub reglazed. There are companies that do this and I'm sure it's less costly. When I bought my house about 12 years ago the tub had been reglazed and it still looks good today.
Well, we've done sinks, faucets and such...I'll bring the handy books to our super club and we'll have one more thing to talk about tonight. I'll also talk to the plumber we've dealt with up here. Unless you are getting into new tile and such, that seems awfully high. What is around the top of the tub? Tile, slab marble or faux marble, prefab molded surround?

It is tile, and the first couple of rows will have to come out, but still, sooooo much money! I am interested in the reglazing option!!!

My handy dh bought a book on plumbing and ripped out our old bathroom and put in a new one. He agrees--getting the old tub out is the biggest pain!
The next question is how old is the old tub? He had a hard time with ours because the stupid thing had a window smack in the middle of the tile and the drain system was a really old one that was not compatible with today's systems. That said--he STILL did it all by himself.
If you are handy, can read directions--I say you CAN do it!

Hi. I wish I knew. We have the same problem. Hubby fixed and we called bath fitters. Unreal but they want almost 2,000 to do the tub/wall thing. To put a new tub and therefore tiles as they will break putting new tub I got a quote of 2.400. I told DH we should check the plumming put new hardware and go with reglazing unless I get a reasonable quote for a bathtub.

The condo was built in 78 so I am assuming the same of the tub....I will try the reglazing thing before I spend ANY other money (the fridge went kaput Thurs and we had to buy a new one...)
