I just saw an Obama commercial for volunteering... www.usaservice.org (http://www.usaservice.org). I went staright to my computer, got to the site, input my zip code for opportunities near me...and guess what pops up first??? Birthday cake/ Treat maker !!!!! I didn't put in any other qualifier except my zip code...it was meant to be. I think I want my eventual obit to read "treat maker"!!!

Still getting details on my exact duties, but basically, it's one baked goody a week (for one of 3 different groups)...so I may be coming to you all for inspiration!!

Thanks all...I got a bit more clarafication.

The baked goods are for 3 different organizations that provide services (developemental etc) to the disabled community.

First treat is for next week!

For many years I made a pot of soup every Sunday (oh, you knew about that? ;)) but no longer have the need to. One of my cooking school teachers just told me that Food Runners, which collects from the end of the farmers' markets, catered events, restaurants, etc, and delivers to various shelters would actually let me deliver a pot of soup to a women's shelter! :) Calling them is on my list for this week, as I can't believe I could cook in my own kitchen for a shelter - maybe because they aren't paying for it? Anyhow, that would be a winning proposition: I get to shop and cook on Sunday, and someone in need gets a wholesome, home-cooked soup for lunch :).

Glad for the reminder, Wendi, to bump that up on my list!

That's too cool -- I love baking treats but it's just me at home so I don't do it as much as I'd like.

I'm going to the site to see what my zip code has in store for me!

Have fun,

Kate

I feel better knowing who it's for. It sounded like a really odd volunteer need at first. How fun!

Canice - that is very cool! You should also look into Ronald McDonald House. Our cooking club has made dinner for them in the past. It feels really good to cook for people who need & appreciate it.

Don't know why I didn't think of that, Susan; there's a RM House just a few blocks from my home! I see that they ask to commit to once-a-month, so that's something to consider, but I'll give them a call as well as Food Runners.

Wendi, I looked for that loooong thread on bar cookies but don't have enough info to find it. I'm sure it would be very useful!

Another thought for all of the BBers who like to bake treats, you might consider contacting your local Ronald McDonald house to ask about making treats for the families who are staying there.

Thanks again all for your supportive comments.

Canice...now whose life wouldn't be improved with some of your yummy soup?? I know it would make me darn happy!!

I've gotten emails from all 3 of my organizations...they are so excited, which as some of you mentioned is the best part...cooking for someone that will really appreciate it.

Enjoy!

Congrats Wendi on your wonderful volunteer position. Sounds like you are going to have so much fun!

I have been looking for somewhere to volunteer for a few months but I am finding most of the positions that sound interesting are during the week when I am working. I will have to check out the link you posted to see what they have to offer.

Canice, I’ve been missing your “Soup on Sunday” (being a fan of soup) threads and wanted to ask about it but thought you just were just exploring new cooking avenues.
I have a women’s shelter not too far from me I should inquire if I can do some cooking for them…..thanks for the idea.
