Well, another new week! Wow, time's passing so quickly. Two weeks until school starts!
We had a great weekend and I'm sorry it's Monday. Slept in this morning but I'm hoping to be back with a workout later this afternoon.
Charisse -- Hope you had a great vacation!
Valerie -- Hopefully this will be your last weel of straight cardio. :)

Stacy, I'm on my way to the exercise room as we "speak". got an hour to get my cardio fix in. didn't get my Netflix delivery so nothing to watch.:(
Hope you had a great vacation Charisse.
Gosh, kids going back to school already? I don't remember ever going back until after Labor Day.
There's an interesting exercise article in Time this week, their cover story. I gotta read it again before I comment.

I'm back!!:)
We had a great time - gained 4 lbs but dropped 2 already so doing ok!
I got the week jump started yesterday with Burn and Shape. I don't know why it still amazes me that a week off kills you!! But I managed to get through.
Today I'm doing some sort of cardio - we have a wedding in 2 weeks and I'm wearing a sleeveless black dress - need to make sure my arms are toned!!;)
I go back to school next Thursday and the kids start on the 25th. Hard to believe.
Valerie - how's it going? I'll check last weeks thread to get an update.
Stacy -when do you guys go back? I love Step Blast - In fact I may do that today!:D

I'm such a wimp:cool:
I can't find the remote for our DVD so I can't move around to different workout options - so I decided I was going to do IMAX 2 with Cathe - gulp.... I did 6 of the intervals and stopped! I even had to modify b/c my knee started up. Stacy, how can you do this with your knee? Do you modify??? Anyway, I got a good sweat out of this!

Welcome back, Charisse!! Four pounds with two down already isn't bad at all. Good for you!! Glad you had a good time.
We go back to school on the 24th. I just can't believe it! Seems like we just go out. And I can't believe that Kyle will be in his last year of elementary school! Wow. Time does fly by. Valerie -- I, too, remember going back to school after Labor Day. We have a Spring Break here that I don't remember having when I was a kid so I know that's part of it. I think we get out earlier, too.
Charisse -- Great job on IMAX2!!! Anyone who can do that is NO wimp! I did it just last week for the first time in forever. I'm just really careful when I step. My genie hops are really genie squats! :D No one legged ones for me -- that's just way too much pressure on my knees. I modify when I need to but for the most part do okay. There are still a couple of moves that I can't do but it has nothing to do with my knee. Tuck jumps?? Whatever. I do a jumping jack. I always wear my brace when I workout, no matter what I'm doing.
Valerie -- Hope you got your cardio in. Sorry your netflicks didn't arrive. Do you listen to music? Maybe that would help. Silent treadmill would bore me to tears!
Did GS Back, Shoulders & Bicpes this morning. Haven't done that in a long time, either. I thought the workout was 62 minutes because that's what I says on the back. Was pleasantly surprised when it was just 51!!! I remember about 40 minutes through, I thought, what more can she do???? So, I had time to add on a 10-minute yoga. Boy, I stink at yoga!

Welcome back charisse... glad you vacation was good and not a total diet killer. probably just a bit of excess water from saltier food or less exercise. if you feel it in a week, imagine how much I'll feel it after 4,5, or 6 weeks? Yipes.
I'm into my 4th week and more relaxed about moving my arm more. I walked on the treadmill, and instead of holding the front bar to not swing my arm, I swung it "normally". hey, it's a WHOLE lot harder when you're not hanging onto the front bar! Had to slow down and decrease the incline. see my doc on the 17th. I've allowed myself to raise arm a little more... nothing fast or extreme, but when I'm drying my hair it goes above shoulder, as when I'm putting dishes away etc. I forgot one time and reached up to shampoo my hair....
The cover story in Time this week is a subject near and dear to all of us... a discussion of intense exercise and whether it helps or actually hinders weight loss. Reinforces the idea that you can't exercise your way past a bad diet, and that exercise doesn't burn as many calories as we tend to think it does. and that many exercisers compensate by eating too much after, as a reward or because they are hungrier. I don't plan on dropping out of exercise but it's a thought provoking article for those of us who exercise a lot and wonder how come we're not getting skinnier.
Tuck jumps? did you say tuck jumps?:eek:OMG those are hard.
I watched oprah instead of my netflix rental. Cathe is on the fitTV channel at the same time, but she was doing coremax. I did a little, but too many moves are arm overhead. turns out that the last season of 'The Shield" they did not include english subtitles. bummer... that show is especially hard to hear the dialog and it's a bit stupid too. we ordered '24' for our next series. good exercise series for brainless action. I cannot exercise to music alone. just doesn't work for me.

Valerie -- I haven't read the article but I did hear about it. I've have to take a look. But I agree with what you've said. I don't necessarily think that intense exercise HINDERS weighloss but it can trigger other behaviors that are counter productive. I agree that you can't exercise past a bad diet. Honestly, it's more diet than anything. I also agree that most people don't have a sense for how many calories they are burning and would probably overestimate. I think people also underestimate the calories in food, espeically out. And when I'm not losing weight, I KNOW why I'm not...don't like it; will try to deny it; but if I'm truly honest with myself, I know. And it's not because of exercise!!
Gald you found something to watch! My Dad watched 24 and liked it so maybe you will, too. I think I tried to watch an episode of Shield but didn't care for it.

Stacy - yeah on those genie hops I just did squats!! And the flying plyo's - ummm jumping jacks instead  I felt my knee start to stiffen up on me while I was doing the short step stuff. I think it's because I didn't do anything for a week and I'm trying too much too soon. I should know better
Bill and I have been diehard 24 fans but could not get our act together last year - we DVR'd it all season and finally gave up - we only saw the first 3 episodes. We'll try to get caught up sometime!!
I think I missed the tuck jumps:p

DH and I have watched a bunch of different TV series for exercise. Sopranos, West Wing, Saving Grace, Rescue Me, Shield,The Wire, Lost, Nip Tuck, and I'm sure a couple more. when you rent a series all the commercials are gone which helps immensely.
Nip/tuck got so stupid we couldn't finish it. Gaack! "24" is probably the next most ridiculous, but it moves fast, you can't get lost, and heck, it's entertaining. Complicated or subtle story lines don't work well when exercising especially without subtitles. it's a pattern.... the last season of a series they cut expenses, and subtitles go.
The researcher seemed to imply intense exercise may hinder weight loss because exercise makes most people hungrier, and they have a sense of entitlement because, after all, they worked hard so they deserve something. and often "something" exceeds or equals the calories they've burned. He did not think putting on more muscle helped calorie burn much. I've read recently the idea that "exercising vigorously increased calorie burn for hours afterwards" is also in question. good solid research that clarifies what works and what doesn't would be nice.
some exercise equipment gives inflated calorie burn, plus it's not adjusted for body size or composition. I know I've read numbers that indicated a woman or man with some muscle will burn many more calories than a person without in an identical workout.

Checking in with 55 minutes on the treadmill and a segment of Stretch Max. Great run! I'm proud of myself -- didn't get up this morning and really didn't want to do it this afternoon. But, I did!
Valerie -- I found the article and read it last night. I think he's right about people thinking that they've earned a "treat" and eating even more calories than what they've burned. I'm a little surprised about the muscle calorie burn, though. I've read that with weight training, you burn calories at a higher rate for an extended period of time. With intense cardio, you burn a lot of calories as you do it, but that's where it stops. I didn't realize that it was so few calories over all! Who knows what to believe???

Interesting article, Valerie. I definately think that people have no clue how many calories they are eating - I know I was seriously off track!! And top it off with the fact, they have been exercising - woo hoo:D I probably fall into this category.
No exercise for me yesterday - I hosted bunco so I cooked and cleaned before the party! I even dusted my chandelier in the dining room!!;)
Today I need cardio bigtime - I'm headed out to lunch with my mom for an early birthday present - Devon Seafood Grill in Hershey - suppposed to be great food!!

Lunch sounds wonderful, Charisse! I love seafood. Happy birthday to Mom.
Cleaning is a workout, right?? Definately endurance as far as I'm concerned.
I agree about the cooking light pop-up. Enough already. I'm a subscriber. Leave me alone. I did find that if you scroll down on it, you can close it. They just make you go through the extra effort.
Did GS Chest & Triceps this morning and No Equipment Abs. My arms are still shaking! A tough workout.
Hanging out with DS today. Why is that when when DH stays home with him they go to tennis class, the batting cages & the pool. I take him to the dentist??? I'm going to have to come up with something fun!!!

I agree that most people have no clue about the calories they're ingesting, especially restaurant food. charisse, a seafood place is probably one of the better choices!
I'm stunned when I hit Starbucks.... big drinks with syrup and whipped cream and a muffin. easy to drop a third of the days calories without feeling like you've eaten anything. I love my lattes but make a good one at home with mostly decaf coffee and nonfat milk.
DH and I don't eat out much. I cook a lot.... guess that's why I'm here on these boards!
I'm finding the Time article hard to believe. 10 pounds of muscle allows an extra 40 calories a day? I thought one reason most people gain weight as they age is that they lose muscle mass, and become less active too. those small increments add up and make a substantial difference. like if you are less active, say burn 200 cals a day less than 'last year" and add 50 cals of extra food... over a year it might really add up into weight gain. AArgh! why is it that weight gain is so much easier than weight loss?
got in 30 on the bike, 35 treadmill, and most of coremax 1. need to skip planks and levitation holds. the rest works.

10lbs = 40 calories?!!!! Geez.
I did Jump, Pump and Jab this morning. Good sweat. Now I can drink 1/3 glass of wine :p
Stacy - yes you need to do something fun!!! An after dentist movie? hike? lunch? (Ha)
Actually my mom is taking me out to lunch today - birthday is next week :)
have a great day!!

forgot to report my workout yesterday ... 10 bike, 30 treadmill, 20 elliptical. only a couple more days and I'm sure I'll be released for at least some things.... maybe not everything ..
Stacy..the dentist is a no fun trip but it's gotta get done. need some fun thing for balance.
Charisse that's just the ticket... the exerciser's indulgence... a splash of white wine in a shot glass!

OMG the food was divine yesterday ... I had mesquite grilled halibut with sides of grilled asparagas and haricot verts - YUM. My mom had cippiliono (Sp?) that was in a spicy tomato sauce and we split lobster mac and cheese. I had a FULL glass of white wine and we split key lime pie. I am SOOOO over for my calorie count. But it's my early birthday lunch and it doesn't happen often - right?!!!
Plus I exercised this am - didn't want to but remembered lunch!!! Express Cardio by the FIRM - 40 mins of nonstop cardio with the box - SWEATY!!!
So I feel pretty good :p We're headed up to the Poconos to visit with my in-laws.. my father-in-law is flying up from Florida to visit so it will be a big family reunion tomorrow. I made black bottom cupcakes and CL's peanut butter pies :D I'm all about the food - but in moderation and at special times :p OK- who am I kidding?!!! I AM all about the food which, as Valerie said earlier, that's why I'm on these boards :D:D:D
Have a wonderful weekend you two!!! Stacy - hope you got some fun time in!! Valerie - you're almost there!!!
Talk to you later!

Charisse, that lunch sounds fabulous!!! And happy birthday to YOU!!! Lobster mac & cheese? I'm drooling. I'm all about the food, too. Yes, that's why I'm here, too. :D
We did manage to have some fun yesterday. But, the dentist was almost three hours! We did lunch, a little shopping, and had ice cream at this fabulous ice cream shop. I had almond joy ice cream and Kyle had new york cheesecake ice cream. To die for. Yes, all about the food.
Today we played tennis, then had DS's tennis lesson. Afterward we did a little wii bowling. Soon I'll be taking him to a sleepover birthday party. Another fun day!
Workout this morning was Kelly Coffey Meyer's Kickbox and some Stress Relief Yoga.
Happy Friday!! Charisse, enjoy the Poconos!
