Hello Everyone,

I recently took a Windjammer cruise to the Eastern Caribbean islands - I was in heaven with all of the wonderful foods! I brought home many island cookbooks and have tried to recreate some of the wonderful flavors and dishes. Breadfruit was a common item - can someone help me out, giving me suggestions on how to find or locate this in the states? I've asked my local grocery stores and they told me they can't help me...

For those of you that haven't had this before - if you have the opportunity to eat it - its wonderful!

Found this info on Epicurious:

breadfruit

Native to the Pacific, breadfruit is large (8 to 10 inches in diameter), has a bumpy green skin and a rather bland-tasting cream-colored center. It is picked and eaten before it ripens and becomes too sweet. Like squash, breadfruit can be baked, grilled, fried or boiled and served as a sweet or savory dish. It's available fresh in some Latin and specialty produce markets and may also be purchased canned.

Here is a link to an on-line specialty produce company that shows breadfruit as one of it's offerings:

They don't show pricing or availability - I think you have to call them or e-mail them first, but it least it's an item they have sometimes.

I see you live in Chicago and suggest you try latin markets. I have never seen panapen here in Maryland but maybe if you inquire they might bring in some for you.
We eat pana (breadfruit) boiled or we make like the fruit plantains (tostones) but tostones de pana.
I hope you find breadfruit
