Hi all,

First, we have a new member who "joined" us yesterday and I have pasted her intro below.

Welcome to Elisabeth13!!! :D

Can I join in on this thread?

I'm a VERY new runner - just starting my third week tomorrow. I'm loving it so much and driving everyone else in my life crazy with my desire to constantly opine about the joys of running, my new shoes, different routes I'm considering, etc. I need a group of like-minded people, I think!

I'm doing the Couch to 5K program...since prior to this, I had no running experience, it seemed like a good, gradual way to get started. So far it's going well - my calves have been a little achy and I'm not sure I've bought the right shoes, but those have been my only hiccups. I'd love to someday get to the point it seems many of you are at - I'm so impressed with you guys!

Elisabeth, I've only been running "seriously" for a couple of years now, and I cannot tell you how fun and helpful the people on this board have been! Let the questions fly-- we're all here to help you get into this as much as we are!

GOOD LUCK, Les!!!

And also much luck to Robyn. Hmmmmm, a half-marathon in steamy VA Beach or a 60 mile, 3,000+-foot vertical-climb bike ride in Colorado???? I choose... uh, neither?!?!? ;)

After running on hard surfaces for almost a month, I went back on my trails yesterday. Alas, 20 minutes in, I fell. Hard. Nothing is broken, but I scraped my shoulder and leg/knee pretty badly. Worse, I somehow strained some batch o' muscles around my right ribcage and I am incredibly sore. Sneezing, coughing, laughing... all painful. So it will be no running, or much of anything else for the next couple of days. *sigh*

So we are off to the lake house in an hour or so for a couple of days. Poor DH will get no help packing/ unpacking the car...

Have a great holiday weekend, everybody!!! Hope that you all have something fun scheduled. :)

Welcome Elisabeth13!!
As Vicci, welcome and heelf free to let go with any and all questions. Love having folks ask questions about my favorite sport.
GOOD LUCK, Les!!!

Thanks - I think a warm half-marathon beats a 60 mile ride. It's only supposed to be ~70. Sorry about your fall and I hope that you bounce back (no pun intended) quickly. I think the worst thing about falling is tweaking muscles. Too bad for DH too. ;)

Today is a rest day. I've picked up my race packet (#4133) and been to the (weak) expo. This year is the worst year they've had. I can't figure out why there aren't many people there - mostly other marathons.

I may run tomorrow a little just to loosen up but I need to rest more for the race.

Happy trails all and welcome Elisabeth,
Les

Good luck tomorrow Les!

Welcome Elisabeth! Ask away, the people here have been very helpful and encouraging to me!

Vicci that is exactly why trail running scares me! Take care of yourself.

I've made it to Vail (got let out from work early!) so I'm relaxing and adjusting to the altitude which will help tomorrow. We'll see how everything goes and hopefully I'll get some photos for you as well.

Thank you, thank you, for the warm welcome! Vicci, thanks for posting my intro from yesterday...how convenient that you all start new threads on Fridays, as that's the day that I start a new training week! Les and Robyn, thanks for the welcome.

Vicci, so sorry to hear about your injury - yuck! I hope you're getting lots of rest this weekend.

I've got a gear-related question...does anyone have a stopwatch that they would recommend? Ideally, I'm looking for something with a wristband that I can set to measure my times for running/walking now, and just running later (I'm doing the Couch to 5K, so for example, I run 90 seconds, walk 2 minutes, etc.) The sad state of affairs I've got going on right now requires me to use my cell phone as a timer...it has a countdown clock setting, so I set it and run, carrying it in my hand the whole way...kind of embarrassing and inconvenient. :o I was looking at the Timex Ironman, but it seems to have mixed reviews, from what I've found so far. Any thoughts?

Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far! DBF is in his best friend's wedding this weekend, so we've got all the wedding-related stuff all weekend long...rehearsal dinner tonight, dinner with out of town wedding guests tomorrow, wedding on Sunday, recovering on Monday. :) I did make sure I got a run in before I met everyone at the rehearsal dinner tonight, though! I just hate it when I have to miss out on running - I really feel like it focuses me and puts me in a better frame of mind.

Les, are you running a marathon soon? Robyn, enjoy Vail! Vicci, rest up! :)

Elisabeth, I use my heart rate monitors watch for any timing needs so I don't have a rec for a regular watch. You might think about a heart rate monitor though to get more bang for your buck. A little tip, it may be covered under your flex spending so check with your administrator if you think you're interested in a HRM.

Ooh - a heart rate monitor sounds great! Is there a specific one you like? I don't have flex spending - I am my group administrator, so I know for sure! That's a good idea, though.

I have a fairly basic Polar but I'm drooling over a Garmin Forerunner 305 or 310xt which has GPS in it as well (no more trying to figure out how far I've gone on runs!). Definitely get one with a chest strap rather than just the watch as they are more accurate.

Vicci - thx for kicking off the new week! So sorry about your spill on the trails. Did you trip over nothing? That's usually what I do

Robyn - have an awesome weekend. The bike ride sounds fun & challenging. I haven't been out on the bike for about 2 weeks & I'm itchin to go. Alas, it will still be a while yet

Les - Sending vibes your way for good weather & fleet feet! Looking forward to the race report

Elizabeth - Welcome to VRB! Very glad to have you around. Lots of people around here have done the Couch to 5K program, so it must be a winner. I have a Timex Ironman watch and really like it. Surprised it got mixed reviews? It has a regular timer, a countdown timer, a lap setting and alarm. It has lasted for years, and years, and years. Oh, and it's waterproof too. I also have a Polar HRM that I like a lot, too. I switch back & forth depending on how much data I need for each workout. What has gotten you into running right now? General health? Weight? Fun? Races?

Work & life in general has been crazy busy this week, so I haven't gotten in as many workouts as I'd like. But DH and I had a great 45-min hill run at the dog park w/Bode on Fri a.m. It was very energizing. Hoping to get in a run on Sun, as well.

One reason we're super busy is b/c we leave for vacation on Mon. We're going to Paris and bringing FIL with. It's his first time out of the country, so will be a big adventure. We'll be there 8 days. REALLY looking forward to it, as you might guess. I was hoping to connect w/the local Hash House Harriers, but it isn't going to fit into our schedule. Oh well. We'll just have to hit the roads on our own.

Au revoir!

Elisabeth, I thought of asking the same question which Susan did, but it slipped my mind as I typed. Why did you start running? I do not have a stopwatch, but I don't think that I could run without my heart rate monitor. It's the very basic Polar model, only gives me my heart rate, the time elapsed, and my average for each session. But it is all I need, since I go out on a certain course and really don't "time" myself. I also couldn't run without my mp3 player!

Les, GOOD LUCK TOMORROW and how wonderful that the weather will be warm and not hot. :) Run well!

I hope that you've adjusted well to the altitude Robyn, and are all ready for a successful ride... tomorrow? Monday? I cannot remember, but have fun!

So Susan is off to Paris? Rough life you have, there! ;) Hope it's a speedy, uneventful journey there, but that you have a great time afterward. I can't imagine running around Paris... wow!

I tripped over a stump on Thursday. :o It had a bit of faded red paint on it (only about 4" in diameter) so it obviously had been there before. I need to go out and re-paint the trail hazards!

There's a nasty scrape on my shoulder and knee but it should be healed by the time we are at the beach (7 days!). My ribs, however, caused me an awful lot of pain for the first day or so. I desperately tried to not sneeze or laugh. :) But, because we had gone to the lake house for a short stay, and I was feeling rather sorry for myself, I ate too much while there. So before we left today I took a mega-ibuprofen and made myself go out for a run. It was pretty painful, especially at first, but I managed 3.5 miles.

Is everyone having a good weekend?!?!?!

Thanks for all the advice on heart monitors, sport watches, etc. Susan, I was just scanning through Amazon reviews on the Timex Ironman, and most of the complaints I read were about the band, I think. That it showed dirty easily and was difficult to clean. I really liked it - pretty decent price and I thought it was cute, and I'm not really looking for anything fancy in this stage of the game, so I'm glad to hear that you like yours. I think I'm going to get one now, since I'm still a pretty amateur runner, and buy myself something a little more high-tech and HRM-ish as a reward for all my hard work later on.

I'm not really sure what exactly flipped the switch in me and made me want to start running. Really, it started with a desire to get outside - I've been doing workout videos indoors as a form of exercise and I was so sick of it. I went for a run one day a few weeks ago for a change of pace, and couldn't BELIEVE how much I loved it. I love being outside, I love that it feels so...purposeful, I guess. I'm not sure why, but it feels so much more goal-oriented to me than the aerobics videos I was doing. I really was surprised how much I'm enjoying it, because exercise wasn't particularly enjoyable to me before. So, I guess I'm doing it for health, for racing (I signed up for my first 5K in a couple months), but mostly because I just love the way it makes me feel.

Wow, Susan, have a great time in Paris! How fun - for you and especially for FIL!

Vicci, where do you run that you're painting trail hazards? You must have a lot of property, I'm guessing? I'm jealous - I'd love to have a lot of space to run that was all my own without having to worry about other pedestrians.

Laura - It's so good to hear from you! It's been ages. Good luck to your DS and congrats on such a big milestone for him.

Elizabeth - I totally hear you on running outdoors. I used to be the aerobics class queen for about 10 years. And now the idea of it kind of bores me. What you describe is why I became so interested in cycling, too. You can go so much farther & see so much more than running. That was a huge attraction to me.

I did get in a run this a.m. with Bode. About 35 min. It's so gorgeous outside! I think half of Madison was out on the bike/run path.

Les must be cooling down and enjoying some post-race endorphins right about now :-)

Les - Sending out good vibes for a successful race! Run well you must, young Padawan. :p

Vicci - Ouch! Oh, that must be so frustrating. Take care of yourself. Rest up so you heal as quickly as possible.

Elisabeth - Welcome! I love that feeling of being totally into running. I'm running primarily on a treadmill these days, and I'm not using a HRM or watch much. The ones I have are also very basic and they work great. In fact, maybe I'll dig at that HRM. It needs batteries, I know, but it might be interesting to see where I'm at. Congrats on all your progress so far!

Laura - Wow, what an accomplishment for your ds! All the best to him.

Robyn - Happy acclimating! Here's to a wonderful trip.

My plan for upping workout times and intensity once the kids were back in school has not panned out as yet. Too much work and other obligations. I'm keeping the faith though. I did get in my runs and cross-training, but I'm sluggish. I gotta believe it's the start of the school year and all that goes with it.

Hope you're all enjoying a lovely weekend. Can't wait for the race report, Les!

Quick fly by - I'm off to school to set up for the Labor day picnic (inside now - it's pouring).
Laura - I hope that Jack did well in his first Marathon yesterday.

The race was pretty good - a longer report forthcoming. I finished about where I figured I would: 1:54.39. Conditions were pretty good. I was ahead of, but not too far ahead, the guy who died yesterday. He was at mile 13 when he collapsed and he fell out sometime just after I passed 13 miles because I didn't know until my sister called and asked how I was.

Off to be hospitable at school... more soon,

Happy Labor day and happy trails,
Les

Wow, Les someone died? That is so sad. I am glad the race went well for you. Jack's marathon was today. He was well off where he wanted to finish, but the temperatures climbed to 85 degrees and it just took a toll on him. He finished at 4:59:17, but I am so so proud of him. He was just happy to be done! Hope all you runners are doing well. There was a man there who was pushing his son with cerebral palsy; I get teary at the finishes of marathons to begin with, but that put me over the top.

Leslie Ferguson

Laura - My congratulations to Jack! Sub-5:00s for his first marathon on trails and in 85 degree weather is commendable. Yep, someone died yesterday. No news more than he collapsed and died at mile 13. He's the second person to die at Rock 'n Roll VB; both in their 50s. YIKES! I'm almost there. ;)

Sorry I can't make specific greetings except to re-welcome Elisabeth and congratulate Robyn for attaining Vail and getting accustomed to the altitude. It sounds like everyone is diong well, things will start working out for those who want to work out more - I know they will.

The race was actually pretty good. It was the coolest it had been in years - ~ 69 at the start which is great for VB in September. It was even a little cloudy to start the race but there was little wind - that would come into play later in the race. My coach (Charlie) and I started together and did the first 10 miles together. Nice start and I like the staggered wave starts - 30-45 seconds between corrals lets the front spread out.

It was amazing at the beginning portion of the race, the wheel chairs were flying - they started 20 minutes before us and we saw them at ~2 miles outbound (they were at ~10 miles at the time) and the guy in the lead was just starting to pull away. We then saw the ladies (btw the Ethiopians took the first 3 female positions) in a nice pack at about mile 9. We didn't see the lead male but my friend who I stayed with said he was tons ahead of the second place guy: I think he finished almost 45 seconds ahead of the second place - not like years past where the difference was 1-2 seconds at the finish.

The first 6 miles were pretty good because they were in the shade but there were a couple spots that the lack of breeze made it stifiling. Then we turned out of the trees and into the sun with the slight breeze at our back - talk about cooking. Luckily I had made the mistake of running most of my last 6 weeks of long runs in the afternoon because it didn't take a huge toll on me. Charlie did well but he started to feel the heat (he has been running a lot - a 50k in South Dakota a couple weeks ago: his 100th marathon or ultra-marathon). Still, we kept together for another 3 or 4 miles and even kept up our ~8:40 pace. At 10 miles he started to falter and told me to go on - I almost didn't want to but he was insistent so I took off and finished in ~ 8:15 pace. FWIW he still finished in ~1:57, which considering the mileage he has been putting in (including 11 miles on Saturday, 6 on Friday, and 5 with me on Wednesday) is fantastic.

I was thrilled to have enough left in the tank for the sprint to the finish and really believe that I wouldn't have done as well if I hadn't run with Charlie for the first 10 miles. I know that I would have gone out a little faster, although I wasn't lagging and we weren't dawdling at all, I just wouldn't have had the energy to do that well.

eta: I forgot to mention the crowds... this year there were fewer folks than I remember on the course. There were actually sections of the course that didn't have anyone on them that have had people for every other year that I ran (this year was 8 of 9). There weren't that many photographers either. Seems odd about that. But there was a lot of MGD 64 handed out at the expo and the finish line. Go figure. ;)

Besides our race, everyone else did really well from our group. The only ding was a little ankle pain for me (nothing that a few Tylenol couldn't take care of) and some minor hip tightness. Today, I'm back and ready to do more, except for my ankle.

Classes begin in earnest tomorrow so I'm off for a little wind down and prep for registration and classes in the morning.

Happy trails all,
Les

Laura, congratulations to your DS!!!! I would have lost it with the man pushing his son as well.

Les, congratulations on a great run! So sad though that someone died.

We ended up doing Vail Pass instead of Tennessee Pass and the altitude took a toll on me. I should have known because really I've had more problems most of this season I think due to more allergens with our very wet summer. I was 5 miles short of the summit when I knew I couldn't go up any further. I was getting light headed and wanted to puke while riding. That's my sign to stop. I keep reminding myself that 2 years ago I thought those who did it were nuts. Last year I hoped one day I could do it. This year I was 5 miles short of the summit. On the way back I noticed the name plate on my right hood was coming off so I was trying to keep a finger on it as I rode. About a mile from the house I was getting into the left turn lane and it came off. I went back for it but the last car before I could get to it crunched it. :( It's a cheap replacement but a PITA to deal with. Anyhow, in then end the ride was almost 40 miles with around 2100 feet in climbing which started at an elevation of 7500 feet.

Okay, I'm ready for ski season now.

Sorry to hear that you didn't make it to the top. You are close and I bet next year you'll make it. Still, to be that close at that altitude with that much climb (did I really use that many "that"s in that sentence? ) you should be proud.
On the way back I noticed the name plate on my right hood was coming off so I was trying to keep a finger on it as I rode. About a mile from the house I was getting into the left turn lane and it came off.
I'm not exactly sure what a name plate hood is but it must have been maddening that it got broken right before you could salvage it. :(
Okay, I'm ready for ski season now.
Sounds like you are - have a blast.

Laura - I should have said that I feel the same way. It always kills me to watch the kids being pushed to the finish or those people who are challenged in some way slugging it out to the finish. Always chokes me up and part of the reason that I wait for the finish (last runner/walker) at most races.

Happy trails,
Les

Les, do you know the little part on your hood that says what type of component it is (mine are Shimano 105s)? That little plastic part. That's it. ARGH!!!! Just ordered it for $15 and hopefully it will be easy enough to install. Otherwise I'll take it into one of my local shops for help.

Ahhhh - got it. Hope it's simple or that your LBS isn't like mine and charges $$ for something simple (like replacing a tube).

Hi, all! DD is off to school, DS is on his way back to college and DH is heading to work after a nice long and enjoyable weekend. Hope you all had fun or relaxed as well! :)

Congratulations on your race, Les! Nice to find you have plenty of kick to finish it off, I am sure. Also great to have all the hot/sticky runs of the training era come in handy! So what happened to the runner that died?? :( I am assuming a cardiac issue? What a shame...

Okay, I'm ready for ski season now.
Hope it starts soon for you Robyn. My DB just left me the paperwork for the annual spring trip, but that seems a long way off. Great job on your continuing progress towards your goals!!

Laura, congratulations to your son! I know what you mean about getting teary-eyed....it really is great to see people accomplish what you know was a goal that took a lot of work to attain.

My plan for upping workout times and intensity once the kids were back in school has not panned out as yet. Too much work and other obligations. I'm keeping the faith though. I did get in my runs and cross-training, but I'm sluggish. I gotta believe it's the start of the school year and all that goes with it.
It's true, Tkay. Keep plugging away when you can. I am right there with you! :o

Susan you are already gone, but I am wishing you a fantastic trip!! Weather-wise, I'll bet this is a great time to be there, too. Have fun and be safe! :)

Glad to have you join us, Elizabeth! Good for you for signing up for a 5K. It really helps with day to day motivation when you have a goal to work towards.

Vicci, good job on your run, but don't be too hard on yourself. Hope you have a great time at the beach. It sounds very relaxing.

Weights and TM for me this AM, though nothing over the WE except family stuff (which was well worth missing a few workouts for!). Tomorrow I have a massage and facial scheduled (a gift!), and I am really looking forward to it. Other than a couple of 5-min chair massages at work events, I have never had one. Somehow I think I am really going to like it!! :D And the timing is good, after all of the back to school stuff plus work stuff, I could use some major relaxation!

Wishing you all a great week!

Les - Great race report. I'm saddened to hear about the man who lost his life. Wow. But I must say I'm impressed with your performance. All that and a kick at the end. Fantastic.

Robyn - Great job on that climb. It's still so warm, I can't imagine ski season being almost here. But a look at the calendar proves me wrong. Hope it arrives quickly for you.

KathyB - Congrats on getting everyone off to school. You're doing great with your consistent workouts too. (Thanks for the encouragement regarding the start of the school year.)

Laura - Congrats on the great marathon run for your ds. How thrilling!

Got in some TM time over the weekend, so I'm happy about that. Opted for a yoga routine on FitTV this morning. I'd never tried it and it was more challenging that the DVD I have. I'm going to record a few classes and play them back to back. With commercials, it's hard to get up any momentum, even though the moves are good.

Not sure if I've mentioned this, but I have arthritis and some disc issues in my neck. I have a referral for PT and I'm going to check out traction devices to see if that helps. (Incidentally, that's why I opted for yoga today instead of a run. Felt the need to elongate.)

Happy Monday--no, Tuesday! Here's to a fantastic week.

Shocking news - the runner who died Sunday was 23 not in his 50s like I thought I read. From what I can tell this isn't his first race - just goes to show you, even a half marathon is nothing to play around with.

Dinner calls...

Oh, Les, that is tough to swallow! My thoughts go out to those who love the young man.

Kathy, so jealous of a massage. I'm in dire need of one of those these days.

Tkay, I wish I liked yoga. I just can't get into it. But I know my body would enjoy it. It's odd because I love to stretch but yoga just doesn't do it for me.

I got in a 40 minute run and some strength training today. Run was a little weird as I was having some stomach pains. Felt like side stitches but the were dead center in my stomach. Not sure what that was about.

Tomorrow is Turbo Kick Box day. I really enjoyed the class and I think it's a good way to confuse my body a bit. My goal for the winter is to get in 3 runs per week plus turbo kick box and my ski time. Probably some spinning on the trainer in there too once the season starts and I can't ride on the weekends. Sorry, babbling. I'm feeling like I really need to buckle down both with my workouts and nutrition to go after my body goals and racing goals for next season so I started logging calories again today which is always helpful for me.

Les - I know an unexpected death is a heart-wrenching thing for anyone, but somehow that man's young age makes it even harder to take. How awful. :(

Robyn - I think it's great that you're thinking all these things through and planning ahead. I know I'd benefit from mixing up my workouts more. I do the calorie thing too. It helps me stay mindful. Turbo Kick Box sounds fantastic! Sorry about the tummy. Could it have been nerves or stress? You've had a lot on your plate.

Heading for a TM run today. Then I have some volunteering at the school. I'm so glad my major deadline is behind me and I can do something else. Have a great Wednesday, runnahs!

Elisabeth, to answer your question, yes, we have a lot of property (a little over 50 acres) and my own private trails run through it. We have to trim the large, arching weeds a few times a year, and DH mows the paths every three weeks or so (except in winter), but otherwise it's pretty easy to maintain. Except now I have to spray paint those protruding stumps again!

Oh, and I am also one who used to do the indoor workout videos and once I started running, I never went back. In winter I use our exercise bike, but I was surprised with how much I enjoyed my runs.

Great race report, Les, sounds like you did really much better than you had anticipated. And a little sprint at the end, cool!

I'm sorry that you didn't make the summit, Robyn, but as you said-- look how far you've come! It will happen one day, I'm sure. And Happy Turbo Kick Box Day!

KathyB, hope that you enjoyed the massage (although who wouldn't?!?!?) and facial. I had a facial last year and it was an incredible experience, although I cannot see ever paying that much for one (mine, too, was a gift).

Tkay, have you ever tried an inversion table to elongate? I use mine often, it's a wonderfully gentle stretch.

Susan is in Paris. *whine*

I am surprised at how much my side still bothers me from my spill last week. If I feel a sneeze coming on (and I'm not out in public), I have to crouch down and sneeze or the pain is nasty. I think that when I fell my arm was shoved into my side/ribs. But I went out today, anyway, because I had to use the EB on Monday (due to rain) and I just couldn't do it again so soon. :) A shade under 4 miles, with a few stops to catch my breath.

Lots of packing going on, we leave early Saturday morning. How I dislike going over that Chesapeake Bay Bridge! But two weeks of sun, sand, and rum drinks seems to be a small price to pay. ;) Take care, all, and I'll next be reporting beach runs!

Vicci do you think you might have broken your ribs? Take care of yourself! Funny you should mention the inversion table. I told a co-worker this morning that I wish I had someone who would just pull on me from all directions to stretch me out.

Tkay glad your past your deadline. How was volunteering at school?

Turbo Kick Boxing (TKB) was good this evening. I can tell I'm going to be sore though so I'm going to have to really psych myself up for my run tomorrow. I'm excited though, I scheduled a massage for next Tuesday! Massage Envy is doing a day where you get a 50 minute massage for $35 and a portion goes to breast cancer research so I decided to go for it.

Vicci - I would agree that crossing that bridge is a small price for what lies ahead. :D Hope your side pain abates quickly. An inversion table does sound appealing to me, though I don't have one. The rheumatologist I saw suggested I may benefit from a traction device (which essentially pulls upward on your head and neck while you sit in a chair). I'll have a PT consult soon. How wonderful to be able to do an entire run on your own property.

Robyn - That massage deal sounds perfect! How could you pass up that one? I can only imagine how sore I'd be after TKB. Glad you enjoyed the class. Volunteering was good--just counting checks and organizing orders parents send in at the start of school. Nothing having to do with the kids, unfortunately.

Did 40 minutes of intervals yesterday and felt great. Planning a combo workout today. A little run/walk combined with some weights, bands and maybe even yoga.

A double! I'd pay that for a 50 minute massage with a portion going to Breast Cancer Research - if only...

Bike ride in the offing if the rain actually stays away!

Glad to hear you are getting your massage, Robyn, and what a deal! Enjoy!

Good job on your workouts, Tkay! It feels great to get deadlines behind us, doesn't it? I have a few behind me myself, and it was quite a relief. (Of course, now there are a few new ones on the horizon....).

Vicci, I'll echo Robyn....are you sure you didn't crack a rib? It sounds really painful. Hope you recover quickly and it doesn't interfere with your trip. Have a great time!!

Hope you got your bike ride in, Les!

The massage yesterday was very relaxing, but I was surprised to find myself a little sore today. It was a Swedish massage, supposed to be "gentle", so I didn't really expect that. Wimp that I am, however, I eased back a bit on weights this AM and just walked on the TM. Didn't see any point in undoing all of that "relaxiation"! :p

Working tomorrow, so here's to a great rest of the week for everyone! See you on the new thread.... :)

Vicci - I hope whatever is ailing your ribs isn't anything terrible. It's odd that it's holding on so long but a good fall will whack your muscles for a while. A few years ago I took a tumble and landed on my forearms but my upper arms were against my ribs. No breaks but it was bothersome to run for a week or so. You do know that you can put a rib "out of joint" too or inflame the connective tissue between ribs when you fall. Neither of which is fun. Still good to have a doc take a look though.
Kathy B - I'm never a fan of running or doing things to risk a massage, so TM after your massage isn't a bad plan. I hope that the ache lessens soon.

I was able to get out today - no riders to join me but I still got out for 70 minutes. It was a weird afternoon - rain (sort of), cool (sort of), windy (sort of)... all out there but nothing "overwhelming."

Looking forward to tomorrow's activities. No classes but playing for a festive: Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Keeping myself grounded in reality though, leading prayers at noon and will leave time to remember September 11th. Not surprisingly, folks on campus were impacted by the events - the main office for our church is on 2nd Ave. NY.

I hope everyone has a good weekend and I'll see you on a new thread.

Happy trails,
Les

Kathy I tend to get sore after massages as well. Hope tomorrow is better.

Les Your ride sounds interesting. Have fun tomorrow.

I did a 40 minute run with only about 2 minutes of walking which felt great. I'd really like to get up to doing 3 45-60 minute runs each week. Maybe one of those a bit longer. Tomorrow is a rest day.
