I realize that most of us probably don't eat a lot of fast food, but sometimes you have to grab something quick. So what do you like? I like Quizno's. They have a pretty good Veggie Lite sandwich, as well as some other lower fat sandwiches (and Baked Lay's).

Aw man, you ask about fast food and then go ahead and talk about healthy stuff! I'm sitting here thinking french fries, Wendy's chicken sandwich, pizza, etc., etc..
But darn it, if it has to be healthy, then I'd go for one of the sandwiches at Subway.

I cannot resist Chick-Fil-A! I LOVE their sandwiches. And, if you skip the fries, even the fried chicken sandwich is not so terrible for you (only 11 grams of fat not including any mayo you add, but I always use the light mayo). I admit that I never get the grilled chicken, always the fried. It's so yummy.

I am posting on the really unhealthy side. I am a whopper and fries kind of gal. Of course, I can't remember the last time I had the combo. I can't even fathom putting that many fat calories in my body at one sitting. But, in a perfect world, I could have a Whopper and fries for dinner almost every night.

Panera Bread - You Pick Two......half a veggie sandwich with Fandango Salad (mixed greens, gorgonzola, mandarin oranges, walnuts with fat free raspberry dressing). I think I could eat that every single day and not get sick of it. (Really)
McDonalds - Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits (yummy), or if there is literally nothing else around, a grilled chicken sandwich - no mayo, and I get BBQ sauce in the little packets and put that on the sandwich.
Or Chipotle - Chicken Fajita Burrito - no beans, no rice, just sauteed peppers and onions, chicken, lettuce, mild tomato salsa, medium corn salsa (no sour cream, cheese or guacamole). But this I only crave once in a while. No way could I eat it every day like Panera!!
Subway is OK too, but only once in awhile.
And if we're talking UNHEALTHY fast food, then it HAS to be a gyro with EXTRA tzatziki!!!!
NEVER on the BK/McDonald's burgers/fries, etc. YUK.

I too am a tremendous fan of Panera Bread.... and I just noticed this morning that they are opening one about 3 minutes from my office. It will be hard to resist stopping in for a bagel on the way in. Also nearby (and today's choice for lunch) is Schlotsky's. I had a southwestern chicken and bean soup today, it was delish. Subway is also another standby... I really like the new country wheat bread.
Now... if we are REALLY talking fast food, give me a Big Mac and fries!!!!! (of course, I can't remember the last time I had that). Gina

BAJA FRESH!
Grilled shrimp baja tacos! I have to have them at least once a week!

Okay, now I know I'm really weird. I get cravings for Popeye's mashed potatoes and Cajun gravy. I could drink the gravy as an appetizer. I also like the Charbroiled Chicken Club sandwich at Hardee's (Carl's Jr. out west). The one item I truly miss though, (because Hardees/Carl's Jr. doesn't sell it on the East Coast) is the fried zucchini. I could eat those by the bucket load with ranch dressing. Every time I go out West I have to visit Carl's for zucchini.

I haven't eaten fast food more than once a year for the past 5 or 6 years, unless we're talking Subway or Schlotzkys, but I never considered them fast food! To me, they're more of a deli!
If we're talking FAST food then there's only one choice. I used to live in CA and my husband used to live in TX and NM. All three states have one restaurant in common that is NOT located here in Washington, and we're both crazy about them: Carl's Jr. I think they ARE Hardee's out in the east. It's one particular menu item that drives us wild, and whenever we're traveling and see a Carl's Jr, we make sure we allow ourselves that treat...of a Western Bacon Cheeseburger (bacon, cheddar, BBQ sauce and a crispy onion ring) a large order of fries and the best Vanilla Milkshake a fast food place ever turned out. YUM! :D

One of my guilty pleasures is McDonalds Sausage McMuffin with cheese, no egg.
In my quest to be more healthy and loose those dreaded 50 lbs or so, I've come up with a close second. I make a breakfast sandwich with 2 Morningstar Breakfast patties (veggie sausage like patties), a slice of Kraft Free american cheese, and a Honey Wheatberry english muffin. It's no McD's muffin, but it is pretty darn good.

Like Jewel I don't eat much fast food except for Subway or PoloTropical's chicken trop-i-chop. Do you have those up north? It's black beans over white rice and chopped up grilled chicken breast and salsa on top. I wasn't familiar with many of the places you guys mentioned. My favorite sinful indulgence would be tacos and bean burritos at Taco Bell. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Wow I must live in the boonies. I have never heard of using "Fast Food" and "gorgonzola" in the same breath. We rely on fast food when we travel (all family is over 6 hours away) but I am increasingly disenchanted. My kids love those happy meals, though.

Well I prefer, Kyoto Bowl (brown rice and spicy terriaki chicken), Baja Fresh, or Filibertos. But alas I have 2 children that would rather eat at Wendy's, so when Wendy's it is, it's a grilled chicken sandwich.
We also visit, Subway occasionally but prefer Blimpies over Subway. But if I really had a choice for a deli sandwich (sub) it would be on the east coast, there they know how to make a sandwich!

Subway veggie sandwiches are my favorite. Haven't had anything fried as a take-out since I can remember. My real downfall is our usual Friday night DiGiorno pizzas -- not take-out, but frozen and quick, like fast food.:D

Actually I read once in a health magazine that a Taco Bell bean burrito hold-the-cheese is one of the best fast food meals you can have, in terms of nutrition (I guess it must be high fibre?) and not too fat/calorie-laden. So indulge and be carefree!
It's kind of depressing, though, to read a post devoted to fast food and find all these salads and healthy soups! So I will confess to a soft spot for McDonald's, which I eat at about twice a month. And I'm not getting the McSalad either! Big Mac and fries all the way....

About every three months I have to break down and get some KFC. I get half original and half crispy and spicy if I can get it. I just get the chicken and make a nice salad and fool myself in to thinking I'm eating healthy. A couple of people from work and I go for Rooster's wings at lunch about every four months or so. When my son's in town, he always drags me to BW-3 for wings and we split a blackened blue burger. Makes me feel sooo guilty.

I used to be so addicted to SubWay veggie subs, but now I can't even tell you were the closest subway is. I also Love, love love Panera bread but I don't feel guilty about going there every now and then. We have this greesy roast beef place near our house that is amazing. We go a couple of times a year and get sandwiches and split a large fry. They smother the sandwich with barbeque sauce, Mmmmm, I am drooling. And once a year or so, I go to Wendy's. :o

I literally cannot eat the Burger King/ McDonald's type food anymore--it makes me physically ill. But..... once a year I drive down to Chicago to visit my family and once a year (usually on the way back) I stop at a Culver's in Wisconsin and indulge in a burger, fries and a luscious chocolate custard shake that must have 3 days worth of calories and a week's worth of fat.
Sigh.

One of our favorite "fast food" places to go to back in Iowa was Bruegger's Bagel Bakery. They made the best bagels and soup!!
We have found a decent replacement in Denver - Finster Brothers Bagels. They have these great sandwiches and they put avacado on your sandwich! Yum!!

McDonald's fries used to be my downfall, but then I found out there are questions about whether they're truly vegetarian. So they're out for now.
We don't have a Chipotle locally, but when I visit a town that does, I've gotta have a veggie fajita burrito (WITH the cheese, guac, etc... I'm not as virtuous as Grace :D ). I think their cilantro-lime rice is to die for... I'm trying to re-create it in my kitchen!

Lara,
I love Bruegger's! They're all over the place in North Carolina, and when I was in school, I loved to go there and get lox, cucumbers and sprouts on a honey-grain bagel. Now I'm sad; I was missing Chapel Hill already :(
I must admit that I rarely buy food out unless I'm going out to dinner, but on occasion, BF and I go to this California-Mexican style cantina called Willy's that makes the most awesome burritos in no time at all. Of course they can be fat-laden if you top them with sour cream, guacamole and cheese, but I'm a huge sucker for their made-on-site salsa (fresh tomatoes, loads of cilantro, jalepenos and onions), so I always have the little speed demons load my flour tortilla up with black beans, loads of salsa :D and lettuce. It's to-die-for good.

There aren't too many around here anymore, but we try to go to one of the older car-hop ones, and hopefully there'll be a classic car meet going on, too.

I love Taco Bell. I have not eaten at Taco Bell in months but when I was in college, I went there at least 4 times each week. When I got out of college, I quit eating fast food and lost 10 pounds without changing anything else! I like Chik-fil-a and I also occasionally have a regular McDonald's cheeseburger. I admit it. I am a reformed fast food addict.

Unfortunately, I can easily be drawn to the lure of fast food. For healthy fast I like Subway. For non-healthy fast food it's usually a quarter-pounder with cheese and fries from McDonalds . But when I was pregnant my DH introduced me to Sonic burgers and they are pretty good. The tater tots are good but major grease-balls so you can only have a couple! I just LOVE Sonic cream-pie shakes. They have different special flavors every few months or so and I usually have to stop by for at least one. My favorite is the banana cream-pie. At least they do put REAL fruit in them so I can justify the fruit and dairy serving a little. :) When I was pregnant I kind of overindulged in fast food more than I should have--I rode that bandwagon pretty hard! But now I don't really have an excuse as it's been 8 months since then! Luckily I've lost all of my weight.

LOL! My nephew, who lives in your area calls it "Chateau le Blanc" and their burgers "sliders"! Like Jewel, I don't consider Subway junk food-I usually get a turkey w/everything but cheese & mayo. Remember the ad where the guy lost lots of pounds by having one of their sandwiches for lunch every day? They do offer low fat/healthy options.
We have Baja Fresh here too, it is really good as is Rubio's fish taco. I am guilty of driving thru Del Taco on occasion for a quesidilla and have an Egg mc muffin once in awhile. My ultimate favorite is the In & Out Burger (a Socal instution) Double Double-double patties, double cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes.MMMMM!!!!!!
Like a lot of people have said, I don't eat too much fast food anymore but I love In and Out Burgers. I have to say that when I have one on occasion, it doesn't seem to hurt me like a McDonalds would. I also love the Quizno's sandwiches and Mexican Food! :p

Oh my gosh I miss In-N-Out Burgers. It's my first stop when we fly back into San Diego (or anywhere else that has them!) It used to be a weekly lunch tradition - there was one next to my car wash...
But if we're talking healthy fast food, definitely RUBIOS!! Grilled fish tacos come in a close second!!

Okay, after reading this thread again and drooling, I have to add two that were favorites before I became a vegetarian.
Carl's Jr.... the Jr. Western Bacon Cheeseburger.
and
In-and-Out Burger's Double Double with Cheese, with grilled onions, plus a lemonade.
When I was in college in CA, we would drive an hour each way just to get to the nearest In-and-Out... usually once a week or more!

Boy, you guys have mentioned some great ones! I hate to admit, but I used to love fast food. I don't eat it very often anymore, and when I do, I'm not terribly excited about it. It's more for convenience now than anything. That said, here are my favs:
Chick-fil-A - I had forgotten about their fabulous chicken sandwiches, it's been so long since I had one. They really should expand to the NW...
Sonic - LOVE their tater tots, chili-cheese dogs, and cherry limeades. Also none in my area, so that's a good thing.
McD's - filet-o-fish sandwich and a big ol' vat of fries. I have to say that McD's has the best tartar sauce around.
KFC - I love their coleslaw! Oh, and their chicken's pretty good too, but only the extra crispy. The regular stuff is too soggy.
Burger King - ONION RINGS. That's it.
Long John Silver's - another one that I can't get anymore, but I love their hush puppies.
As for healthy, my vote is for Subway. I really like their asiago caesar chicken sandwich, although it's not the healthiest thing you can get there. But hey, at least I'm not eating McD's!
Jewel - I lived in Texas for 22 years and never heard of Carl's Jr. until I moved to Oregon. Still don't like them, but DH does. Are you sure they have them in Texas?

I resisted answering this poll all morning long -- but I'm caving in.
Why?
Cuz I have to throw in my own shameless plug for Kopps Custard ( www.kopps.com ). They have the best, biggest, greasiest, yummiest burgers. And really decent Buffalo Chicken sandwiches. Their onion rings ROCK. And you can top off the whole sinful escapade with a couple of scoops of their vunderfool custard.
What could be better? No fast food competes :)

For healthy fast food, I also like Subway and I enjoy Manhatten Bagel sandwiches, although I think these probably have a lot of calories (if not so much fat).
For unhealthy fast food, there's a list:
McDonald's Chicken McNuggets and fries
Hamburger with everything and fries from local fast food place Rush's
anything from Steak n' Shake -- especially their fries
I don't indulge too much in fast food but once in a while it sure tastes good. :)

I love the CHICKEN FAJITA PITA at JACK IN THE BOX and anything from TACO TIME (Also, hard to admit, but I also love the greasy tacos you get at Jack in the Box):D
Well, we've got this little Mexican food stand which makes really good, really cheap food. Their chicken tacos are WON-derful!
Then there's Pink's in LA. Gooey, messy chilidogs with absolutely no redeemingly nutitional value whatsoever I am sure. I used to live practically across the street from the place and would be in Pig Heaven!

WOO HOO!!! Anita, you're the BEST!!! Although I could get to any of them, the one in Rolling Meadows would be closest and easiest - I actually must have driven past that one several times in just the last month or so.....HOW DID I MISS SEEING IT??? I have eagle eyes when it comes to restaurants (part of my job too, since I have been selling to restaurants for the past 10 years!), so I am quite amazed that I missed this. But now I will make a trek there just for those baja tacos! I'll let you know if they make the "I must have these often" list.....:D
Thanks again for searching that out for me. This board is the greatest!

I love Baja Fresh! I always get the grilled veggie burrito with black beans and it is excellent. It's one of those things where it's always so good that I'm afraid to try something new and then be disappointed when it's not as good as my usual. But I'll definitely try the fish tacos next time.
Panera Bread - man I miss that place! I moved from the midwest to Arizona earlier this year and Panera was my favorite lunch spot. Half an asiago roast beef sandwich (extra horseradish sauce, please) and the cream of chicken and rice soup (or the chicken chili) and I'm good to go. And how about those dutch apple bagels? They are sooo wonderful. But good news! I'm going back this weekend for my friend's wedding and you'd better believe Panera is on my list of stops to make while I'm there! :D

Well, the topic is 'fast' food? Hmmm ... . So many possibilities, so little space.
Actually, most of the so-called 'fast food' places around here are anything but fast, way too crowded and not very clean, so I usually don't bother.
However, I do like Chick-Fil-A's sandwiches, just the original, nothing but fried meat, buttered bun and a dill pickle. The lemonade I used to like, but am not so wild about anymore.
Also, I have a craving for some Sonic Tater Tots about once every ten years. Noone else makes them with the right texture and salt level. LOL!
I love a good gyro, but the only place I know of that makes really good ones isn't a fast food restaurant, and isn't close enough to home to be a frequent occurance, more's the pity. (If anyone's interested, it's Keifer's in Jackson, MS. I think there might be another one somewhere else in the world, but I can't remember where. Good gyros!)
I also like Nathan's hot dogs. There used to be on on I-95 in Smithfield, N.C., but the last time I checked they'd closed it. (Fortunately, Nathan's dogs are now in my local Winn-Dixie, and I can indulge from time to time! :) )

Barrie
08-21-2001, 03:17 PM
nope, we have Whataburgers in Arizona too (although I haven't tried it).
I've been turned off of fast food due to my digestive problems. I've actually lost my taste for most of it. I just don't care for beef and thus don't like hamburgers. I remember loving Taco Bell bean and cheese burritos and tostadas, but the beans really upset my system.
There are Chick-Fil-A places all around my area, and I believe it is my favorite. It's baked, not fried, but it does have fat in the breading.
I need to increase my fat and calorie intake because of my low weight, but I have to watch out for my super sensitive intestines as well.
It's not really fast food but it isn't formal. I LOVE ZuZu Handmade Mexican Food! There are a couple in Dallas and a few in other cities.
Bruggers Bagels used to be all over Dallas. I would buy a weeks worth of bagels to freeze and eat one every morning. Now, ALL Texas locations are closed. They were the best!

After reading this thread several days ago and patting myself on the virtual back for not having had any fast food for some time, I starting CRAVING the stuff. In the past two days I've been to Sonic (had to have a cream-pie shake thanks to Brendat4's posting) and Taco Bell.
Hey, Aggie94, what about Freebirds? Being an Aggie, that has to be on your list, right? Now that we have a Freebirds in Austin, my new favorite fast food is definitely a monster burrito. YUM!
I also have a huge weakness for Schlotsky's original sandwich.
Now that I've finally confessed, maybe the cravings will end. . .

I LOVE Culvers and culver's custard..we didn't have them in minneapolis, but everytime I drove through WI, I'd stop..and northern MN has pasties in the grocery store WITH rutabega, thank you very much--used to love middle eastern markets for hummous and tabouli...Lots of places had good pizza by the slice..my husband announced to me one day that he had shared with a guy that he works with that I'm always making this good stuff to eat and he didn't have the heart to ask me if we couldn't just eat crap now and then...maybe this weekend....

Well, I finally have to step in. I LOVE Sonic . I love their burgers, their fries, their banana cream shake....unfortunately, (or fortunately), due to digestive problems of late, I am giving up all dairy and all meat to test these items out. So, most Sonic is not an option.
HOWEVER, I have discovered an amazing sandwich at Whole Foods . It is focciaa, pesto, dark leaf lettuce, roasted red pepper and grilled tofu, and it is wonderful! So, I guess for healthy fast foods, I vote Whole Foods and Schlotskys for their tuna sandwich :)

If I have a choice- Subway's 6" turkey, Italian dressing, no mayo or cheese and a bag of Baked Lay's
In times of desparation... Mickey D's cheeseburger and small fries. I have recently come to love their new parfait! Wendy's is good, too- I like their chicken sandwiches, especially the spicy chicken one.
Given a very strong craving, I head to KFC for a Twister and small cole slaw. Evil, I know, but oh so yummy!
I REFUSE to eat Burger King anymore- for some reason just the smell of the place makes me gag. I'm proud of my 10 year BK-free record. I also won't do fast food fish or pizza.

Robyn,
Thanks for reminding me! It's been so long since I had a Freebirds Monster Burrito that I had almost forgotten about them! DH & I used to go there all the time in college. We have yet to find a place that tops Freebirds for good, fast (not to mention giant!) burritos. Have one for me, will ya?

Gasp! I didn't know Freebirds was a chain! We had one a block from apartment in college in Santa Barbara. They were open until 3 AM. A monster steak burrito... oh, mmmmmmmmmm. Oops, I'm a vegetarian now. Must contain myself. :p
But if I ever visit a town with a Freebirds, watch out, I'm there!

I eat fast food VERY seldom... but when I do...
I LOOOOOVE Taco Bell... (Baja Beef Gordita and Pintos 'n' Cheese... mmmmm!) :)
I also like Wendy's chili w/ the side caesar salad ("Please hold the bacon bits, dressing packet and croutons, and may I have some fresh lemon?")
--and--
Arby's Roast Turkey & Swiss Market Fresh Sandwich ("Please don't butter and grill the bread, hold the sauces, heavy on the red onion, and may I have some of your caesar dressing on the side?")
It's so much easier just to eat at home!!! :)

Just the other day I discovered Taco Time/Teriyaki Stix/Hogi Yogi , which has only been in town for a few months. They have a great bean burrito and awesome smoothies! I'm so happy! We're sort of "limited" around here in terms of choices! Unfortunately, it's on the opposite side of town :( . Oh well, I'll just have to drag the kids in there when I'm out shopping! ;)

I have to confess that once in a while I go for the McDonald's Big Mac and Fries. Most often, though I have Chick-Fil-A . I get the regular sandwich with nothing added and a small cup of cole slaw. On WW, the slaw is 3 points and the sandwich is 6 so that is pretty good for fast food. I would say I go there about every two weeks. Another favorite of mine is Wendy's
chili. A small serving is only 4 points in WW and it is filling. I love it!

When I visited Las Vegas I went to an In-n-Out as a friend had told me I HAD to try one of their burgers. I'm not a big burger fan but this was delicious...and terrible for me! But what the heck...I'm in NY so no chance of getting addicted. Favorite fast food would be KFC BBQ Crispy Strips (kids meal with coleslaw and a biscuit). I have it once maybe every three months or so. On the healthier side there is a little country drive in place we go where I order a grilled chicken teriayki with lettuce, tomato and onion, crystalite lemonade and we share a small fry. They have a different type of frozen yogurt every week so a kiddie cone for dessert!

Very interesting... we have Panerra bread places and I've never tried them. I'll have to stop in; it sounds great. My favorite junk food/fast food is a Buffalo Chicken Wrap from d'angelos... spicy fried chicken, lettuce, tomato and drippy blue cheese dressing in a roll up. Oh yum...

I'm surprised there's only one Arby's fan here. I never ate at Arby's. Then they closed down my KFC and turned it into Arby's. Then I got all these awesome coupons in the mail for Arby's. How could I resist? The sandwich was okay, but wow- those curly fries!! Yummy!!
Used to LOVE Pizza Hut (or Pizza Hat as my sister used to call it when she was 2). I haven't had it in some time now.
Another vote for Taco Bell bean burritos. I also read or heard that the bean burrito was one of the healthiest fast food items around. I get grossed out by the meat at Taco Bell so I stick to the vegetarian items.
Wendy's Taco Salad is awesome, too- and sort of healthy, right?
McDonald's is good- cheeseburger and fries with a strawberry shake. However, BK's fries have been much tastier lately.
When I go to BK, it's the BK broiler. I figure, hey, it's broiled chicken, not fried. Yeah, like that makes it okay! Mostly we eat at home, though.

BlueMoose, you reminded me -- my best friend and I discovered Hogi Yogi when went on a trip out west a couple of years ago -- that place is so awesome! You'd think they could bring one down here, huh?
I forgot about this on my last post, but this is my personal indulgence -- I LOVE McDonald's ice cream cones. I used to get one every time I drove the 7-hour trip home from school, and when ex-BF and I were in Europe last summer, we stepped into a McDonald's (shameful, I know, but we had to pee), and we both got one. Then we swore it was better than any gelato we'd ever had. :p

We have this little chain in the Seattle area called "Taco Del Mar". They make yummy HUGE burritos, I love the fish, chicken or pork. The chicken one is only 6 fat grams, but lots of calories due to the pinto beans, and rice...etc.
Also, I LOVE Quizno's.
Taco Bell's Chicken Santa Fe Gordita
I like ARBY's Roast beef sandwiches, too.
I rarely eat any of that stuff, except Quizno's, they recently came out with two new chicken sandwiches that are lowfat....one is a Bourbon barbequed chicken, the other a Tuscan chicken sandwich. Both are very, very tasty and low in fat and calories.
I stop in sometimes when I'm on the road. Yum.
I like Taco Time Chicken soft tacos. Haven't had one in about a year, though.

Just doing some leisurely reading this morning and came across this fun thread (from 2001!). Well I guess I will resurface it to the first page with my response. :D
My favorite fast food is Sonic. I love the flurries, esp the orange flavored ones. I guess they call them cream slushes now but I still order flurries at the drive in. I also love Taco Cabana, cute little 24 hour tex mex, used to get blended strawberry margaritas there in Corpus late at night with friends after coming home from the beach! The fajitas are good and the roasted chicken is pretty tasty too.
Lately my fast food has been sandwiches made with roast beef from Central Market's deli. The beef is a excellent med-rare and goes well on rye bread with horseradish/mayo/chili sauce. Throw on some tomato, red onion and lettuce. Wash it down with a glass of milk. Fabulous!!

I do not like fast food. It's smelly, greasy and gives me a stomachache. If I'm in a situation where I must eat fast food, then I'll have a subway turkey sandwich with no mayo no cheese -- but that's it. Just looking at greasy hamburgers and fries grosses me out. What's worse is sitting in a cubicle near someone who is eating a hamburger and fries. BLECH! Or how about this -- getting in a car after someone has been eating fast food in it. DOUBLE BLECH.
I do like hamburgers, fries, tacos, but outside of a fast food setting. I'd rather skip eating than choke stuff down behind the wheel, before a soccer game or whatever the situation is that necessitates having to hurry through the meal. What's the point?
Exception: Dairy Queen Cones

Since moving to Florida, we have made a most unfortunate discovery, Checkers. The food is actually good. There is no indoor seating (probably a FL thing), it's a drive up/through with some patio-style seating available.
The french fries are blazing hot and spiced. They are actually crunchy and don't flab over like McDonald's or Burger King. The burgers are probably beef because they look like beef. They are not gray like McDonald's. We haven't had a bad meal yet from Checkers - which only number about 4 since we moved here. We don't do much fast food but it's nice to know good fast food is available.

Panera is the closest that I get to fast-food.

Well, we are heartsick because we can't get our favorite where we live. We moved from Arizona to Atlanta in August. Our absolute most favorite fast food place to eat was Rubio's Baja Grill...oh my god...we loved that place. I always got the chicken soft tacos (with the greatest chipotle sauce and avocado and lime...mmm...) and hubby always got the shrimp burrito. Their food was so fresh and delicious and not really like fast food at all. They are soooo much better than Baja Fresh. Anyone in the California or Arizona area who hasn't been to Rubio's REALLY must go. I'm so depressed...

I eat WAY too much fast food. My husband and produce and act in a sort of community theater. Last fall we had meetings/rehearsals/making costumes 6 days a week. We lived fast food. I usually try to think of which one will be least gross.
Fatburger is usually good, and In and Out has good burgers but yucky fries. We usually end up with Kentucky Fried Taco Bell.

I just checked the website and didn't see anything about any nutritional information. Where did you find it? And also, what is the Chicken Fandango sandwich? What is it? I always order the Fandango salad, but didn't know they had a sandwich like that? I checked the Cafe menu section of the website, and didn't see it listed (in case they offer different things regionally, which is entirely possible). Clue me in on what I might be missing! :D

As far as Arby's, there is a line from the ever-relevant Simpson's where it's a spoof on "Lord of the Flies" and everyone is going around stating that they are so hungry they could eat blank. Then, one of the purple-haired twins chimes in with "I'm so hungry, I could eat Arby's" and everyone replies "Wow, that is hungry!"

Back when i was in high school and worked all the fast food off through cheerleading I always loved:
McDonald's Chicken Nuggets with sweet and sour sauce (I haven't had these in about 4 years, I am afraid I wouldn't be able to control myself)
KFC Extra Crispy 2 Legs with a double side of mashed taters and gravy (Haven't had the chicken in years, but I eat the taters every so often a side portion with gravy only has like 110 calories and minimal fat)
Arby's Roast Beef loaded with arby's sauce (Yum i miss this!)
Tim Horton's Honey Whole Wheat bagel with low fat cream cheese, extra cream cheese (Their bagels are huge, now I like einstein's they are smaller and just as yummy)
White Castle Chicken sandwiches
Chick Fil A chicken strips with Honey Mustard sauce.
Daggone I'm getting hungry, someone take my keys so I can't hit a drive thru in the next two hours!

Fast food is a rarity for me, though if I could eat it without weighing 6x what I do, I'd probably eat it every day! If I have to eat fast food and I am being "good" I will get Subway turkey w/ brown mustard, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, green peppers, onion salt and pepper. If I am throwing caution to the wind, these are my fast food favorites:
Subway tuna on whole wheat with cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, banana pepper, green pepper, salt & pepper AND vinegar & oil. (Oh god does that sound good about now!) and a diet coke.
McDonald's - Quarter pounder with cheese, SUPERSIZE fries and a diet coke
Sonic - Coney & tots w/ a banana milk shake
Popeyes - 2 piece dark spicey with mashed potatoes AND onion rings
Taco Hell - only thing I can still stomach there after way too much Taco Bell in college is the pintos and cheese w/ extra hot sauce.

It would have to be In-N-Out cheeseburger and fries. If I was feeling really indulgent, I'd add a chocolate shake or root beer. Not many places have root beer and if I'm going to have a soda with my meals, it's got to be root beer.
Or Carl's Jr.'s Famous Star, no cheese and fried zucchini. Yummy.

guilty pleasures of the fast food sort...
KFC - potato wedges
QUIZNOS - bourbon chicken sub with mushrooms
POTBELLY'S - pizza sub & oreo cookie milkshake
BRIAZZ - chicken azteca soup
LONG JOHN SILVER'S - chicken planks with hush puppies
since HARDEE'S closed down around here, i would have to say an ARBY'S regular roast beef with extra arby's sauce is always welcomed in my belly.
and a gyro with lots of cucumber sauce from a greasy "no name" fast food joint.

You guys are making me hungry!!! My faves:
Wendy's- This is my favorite fast food burger place (although I do love Carl's Jr. and In and Out Burger when I'm out of state). I just like their regular burger and fries.
Subway- DH and I love this! He likes the Subway club, and I normally get ham and cheese on wheat.
Schlotzky's- We normally stop here on the road. I normally get the low-fat turkey sandwich or a kid's pizza!
Taco Bueno- I think this is just a North Texas thing, but I just love their cheese nachos and Muchacos.
Pizza Hut- I don't get this very often, but I love pepperoni and bell pepper stuffed crust pizza!
Sonic- The best onion rings and shakes!
Arby's- I never went here as a kid because my parents hated it, but my best friend in high school introduced me to the Arby's Cheddar Melt! Mmmm...
Really, I don't eat fast food that often. Probably an average of 1-2x per month... Less when I'm at home, more when I visit my parents.

Thanks for the Panera link, Victoria. The food is a bit higher in fat/calories than I thought, although I never thought it was totally low-fat. But I will still go there. The Fandango salad is so good, and since the dressing is fat free, the fat comes from the cheese and the nuts, (which you can ask them to go easy on, or pick some out - I typically pick out at least half of the cheese anyway). And if you do a "you pick two", you can get half a sandwich and a nice soup or half salad. Half a Mediterranean Veggie and half a Strawberry Poppyseed salad (one of the seasonal salads) isn't that high in fat at all, and provides you with several servings of fruits and vegetables for a day. Even a half portion of most of the soups isn't that horrible.
Now that Turkey Artichoke Panini - yikes. I guess if you don't eat hardly anything else that day it would be ok, but I'm definitely a three meal a day gal, so I think those are out from now on!
I guess even CL's highest fat items are still much lower than what you get when you go out, eh?!! Makes me feel that much better about what I cook and serve at home.

I first read this thread and thought, "I don't eat fast food." But, then I remembered my weekly trip to Baja Fresh. Hardly seems like fast food with the fresh pico de gallo, black beans and grilled chicken. They have the best burritos! I will go there over a sit down Mexican restaurant. It is probably less fat, as the burritos don't have much cheese. :)

We mostly eat fast food if we're traveling and there's nothing else. I guess my favorites would be:
Subway--Veggie delite with cheese and all the veggies (except onions and olives)
Taco Cabana (does anyone else have that nearby?)--bean and cheese soft tacos
Schlotzky's--Cheese Original (no meat, no onions, no olives) and Cracked Pepper potato chips
And some local places like Pizza Inn (tomato pizza) or Alvin Ord's (kinda like Schlotzky's, they have a great cheese sandwich), or Blimpie (basically a veggie-burger-sub).
I guess those are the only fast food places we ever eat at, and again, that's mostly when we travel to west Texas to see my parents and there's not too much to choose from! Unless you count ice cream...we've been known to stop at Baskin Robbins (chocolate blast!), Sonic (DH's favorite chocolate-covered-cherry shake), or Dairy Queen (banana split or blizzard or dipped cone) every now and then while traveling...

I don't consider them fast food because 1) they have a relatively nice dining room and 2) they are very SLOW! Then again, Dairy Queen can be slow too and they are most definitely fast food.
No. You don't get a waitress, but you don't get a waitress at Luby's Cafeteria and I definitely would not consider that fast food.
I'm sure there is some restaurant industry definition for "fast food".

No, I wouldn't consider Luby's fast food either, but you do have someone bus your table and refill your drinks there, so there's some limited service aside from just ordering your food. I used to think of fast food as places that have drive-thrus, but there's that category of places (like Atlanta Bread Company) that are fast food in some sense and not in others. I guess I figure if it's a place where it's as common to get your food "to go" as it is to eat there, it's fast food.
Anyway, I went to Atlanta Bread Company for the first time last weekend, and it was REALLY good.

The first treat that came to mind was a Taco Time veggie burrito. I love those, but I seldom have fast food at all. We're trying to cut down on meals out, and we don't want to waste our 1 meal/week out on fast food too often. But there are a few other places we go when the fast food urge hits:
Burgerville, USA (local chain) for fresh berry milkshakes & burgers with real Tillamook cheese.
Mike's Drive-In (teensy local chain) also has really good fresh berry milkshakes and pretty fair mushroom burgers.
Taco del Mar for their veggie burritos, or DH likes their fish tacos.
El Burrito Loco (local chain) yummy fajita burritos with horchata.
Another fan of Baja Fresh, here. Sometimes, we pick some up on a Friday night for an evening of euchre (spelling?) with our best friends.

If I am in the mood I will go outta my way for Chick fil A and Baja Fresh is close and wonderful. I went to Atlanta Bread Co. for the first time last night. I had the veggie pannini and tomato dill and basil soup. It was ok but the soup was to salty and I have had better veggie panninis. I waited for ever for this place to open and was somewhat disappointed. I will give it another chance though because they have tons of soup choices and there are plenty of things on the menu to try yet.

I gave up fast food about a year ago, but when I *need* to eat it, I typically go with the following:
Arby'S: Arby Jr. with a smidgen of arby's sauce (plain bun, not toasted)
BK: Grilled chicken sandwich, no mayo, mustard packet on the side (plain bun, not toasted)
McDs: Grilled chicken sandwich, no mayo, bbq sauce on the side
Wendy's: Mandarin grilled chicken salad, no dressing, no noodles, no almonds, with fresh lemon juice
Subway: 6" Roast Beef on wheat with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and deli mustard
I wouldn't consider Panera or Brueggers to be fast food - more cafe eating. There, I go with:
Panera: Any of lowfat soups are delicious!
Breuggers: Whole wheat bagel with all the veggies and deli mustard
I think my favorite 'fast food' place, though, is typically chinese takeout. Steamed shrimp and mixed veggies with brown rice. *drooling*
:D

I looked again at Panera's website for the calorie count. I couldn't find it. Does anyone know where that information is located?

I think you're definitely right ;), but it's nice to think that even if it was fast food, that there is something better out there than stuff being slapped on a greasy grills and dropped into deep friers (even though we savor it on occasion ).
Wendy's isn't always too bad though, except there are hardly any of them here in Toronto!! I don't know, actually, if I've even seen one...
It's not so bad, I think I could do without it anyway  ;)

Well I'm glad someone sort of agrees ;).
I've been thinking about this. By Eva's definition -- a place where there's as much take out as there is eat-in -- ABC would be fast food. Still, I tend to associate fast food with (like Kayla said) greasy grills, stuff being dropped into deep fryers, crying babies, dirty tables, cheap food, and questionable characters lurking about. I'm going to have to go research how the restaurant industry (particularly ABC themselves) define fast food. I'm sure the have some slick name for whatever niche they fall into.
If ABC is fast food, than I can no longer smugly remark that I don't eat fast food.

Thank you for posting the Panera information. Doesn't it figure that my favorite bagel (Cinn. Crunch) is by far the highest in calories! I'm glad I usually get soup and salad!
